Man, it's great to hear two greats of the game. Corey is so creative & John has done so much for the resurgence of 14/1.
I hope Straight Pool will come back big time, i just love the game! Rules are quickly explained and easy to understand, this would be very tense to watch, just like snooker, one miss and it could be over... Maybe the goal should be raised then to 200 Points, but that would be some highly attractive Pool in my guess!! Thumbs upp for Straight Pool and all who love and respect this awesome game!!

extremely informative and enjoyable, must be one of the best TAR podcasts in a while, thanks to John and Corey, and Justin and Mark! btw, it is a great idea to let players shoot balls as they're talking!
This was great! Loads of fun to just listen and enjoy. You get to experience a part of the pool world you'd never get to in any other way. P.S. John got carried away a bit and forgot to share airtime. Three or four times Corey started something that sounded very interesting only to get cut off. But John was still cool.

I tried to talk to Corey about Meucci Cues a few years ago at a tournament at Big Dog billiards in Iowa. He was sitting at the cue repair/tip replacement area by the front window waiting for some work on his cue. I stopped to talk to him, and I asked him how he liked playing with a Meucci Cue, and told him I have a Meucci too.
He looked at me and gave me a two word answer, he said it's fine. And that was it, then he looked away and did not say another word. So I stood there for a few seconds, and walked away. I got the feeling he just did not want to talk to me, and that he wanted me to just leave him alone and go away, so I did.
Then because of that, I never said a word to any of the other pro players during the entire 4 day tournament. I went undefeated the first 3 days and made the final 32 for the re-draw. Then I lost to 2 of the pro players, one was Danny Olson. But I did beat one pro, his name was Sam Cole from Kansas City, his nicname was Kansas City Sam, I beat him 7-2.
I finished 17th out of 160 players, with about 20 pro players in it, so I did pretty good, I beat one pro and lost to the other two. But mostly what I remeber from the tournament is Cory pretty much blowing me off and not talking to me.
I know this was recorded almost 8 years ago but I have to chuckle when listening to them talking about making a living playing pool. Now we have kids earning $60,000 scholarships here in Florida just for fishing ! ! ! Who'd ever thought you could make a living fishing!

What John Schmidt said about snooker ("the pockets are tiny but the balls are tiny") isn't quite correct. The balls are only 5mm smaller than pool balls, yet the corner pockets for example are a whole inch smaller than the pockets on these diamond tables. Not to mention the cut of them is totally different, with the snooker tables having a rounded cut to the pockets which makes them a lot less forgiving than the straight cut of the pool pockets.

I live in Pensacola Florida and got to play with john as well as see him run 300 balls playing straight pool...i have also watched him beat the 12 ball ghost for $500 a set...there are things about this game that need to be taught and for you to get to there level of play you have to have a natural talent that can't be taught
He was pretty tough when he was in stroke. Sadly, he lost his pool place and got a divorce . I believe he lives in Canada now.

yes its disenfranchised from Amature league to pro ; but more so it is a fragmented market and can't be tapped as its too local. Corey makes a good point about the leagues fitting bills but look at boxing schools versus promoters; Billiards needs to work closer to that system to get in the money; advertisers can't do this with tournaments. And solicitors of air time can't sell it.

that part where john was talking about his business venture and how he was golfing and not playing pool, he took over our local pool hall in wv. i wasnt playing either at the time so i only met him once or twice, but i thought it was funny how he said that it was the most unmotivated he has ever been. it was big news, to locals like us, when we heard a pro was coming to town, obviously he was better than anyone in the area, yet he was still doing worse than he ever had. haha good stuff
One thing i like about 10 ft tables is good for the cross over for 3 cushion players but it's not possible.

John makes the comment of hitting a million balls and that's why top players play good. It reminded me of a comment Bobby Hunter said to someone when they asked for lessons,
Hunter: "Can you run a rack of 9-ball?"

John is one of the first pros I've ever listen to complain about the same stuff I do. I can't stand the trend toward tighter and tighter pockets. Diamonds are nice, but the last tourney I played in was all Diamond 9 footers and I was exhausted by the end. I like buckets much better.
I agree. The game is more about cue ball control than ball pocketing. You shouldn't be stressed about a tight pocket when you're trying to fire a ball in and go three or four rails for shape. Pocketing the ball should be an after thought at the pro level. They've lost touch with what made pool exciting. Guys firing balls in from everywhere and running out ie. Earl Strickland. Thats where John was wrong. Earl is famous for his style of play. I didn't know he acted the way he does until a few years ago. Nick Varner in all honesty is a better player over all games than anyone in pool except Efren but no one outside of pool knows who he is because he rolled balls in and it was quite boring to watch. John was right about making the game tougher by adding pressure. That's what separates pros from people who play good. Can you play full speed under pressure.

Pool players love this game too much to drop it for money and as John said, money resides with people behind tournament organisation. I adore this game and it's really sad not to see it on TV that much and not putting a lot more money in whole pool industry. :(

Im a top tier APA player so this is a conversation that hit home. Im a 7 in eight ball and go between 8-9 in 9 ball. (first session) I give weekly money to the apa and it isn't helping the pro arena and its not leading me to my "pro career". I rather bet the 10 here and there. I am young in pool terms and plan on making a life out of pool in one way or another. Its not about the money for pool players but we should be able to make a living, like many of the other sports/recs.
I think one problem with pool is people play one time and suck . They are to lazy to learn to see the results. You either love or hate pool. It kills me how people love tennis golf ping pong football but hate pool. It is the greatest game ever.
And it's not that hard to get "pretty good" at, say mid league play, if you love it, and put in some time. Beyond that, it gets exponentially more difficult...not just the mechanics, but the requirement of so much knowledge. I lost to one of the top league players the other night, and he said "you know what you should have done with that shot?". I said "show me", so he set it up, and showed a really easy little dink carom that left either a perfect second shot, if the ball was made, or a pretty solid safe, if missed. I looked at that, and said something to the effect of "Why didn't I see that, it's sooo simple?". He said "40 years". True, VERY true. That's one reason he consistently beats most everyone in the league.
A really casual player has NO IDEA what's involved in becoming a pro, ESPECIALLY a top level one. I talked to a guy I watch play (that is amazing, even now) that missed the Australian snooker open win by one ball 25 years ago, and asked him if the pros were really that far above the best amateurs. He said, "absolutely". He then set a ball in the far corner, and one one the short rail six inches from the close diagonal pocket, shot from right beside the rail ball, and power drew from the opposing corner shot back to the rail cut, which WENT IN! Holy crap!!! I asked him if he thought that made me like him MORE or LESS. ;-) And the pros are "way better". I also saw Bobby Kennedy shoot at an easy ball, three feet in front of me, and MISS THE ENTIRE BALL. He looked up at me with a silly look on his face and said, incredulously, "I missed the whole ball!". I told him that made me feel better. He smiled.
All these Yutube people only hear this i go to the same pool hall that jon goes to where he is the house pro. He told a story of when the owner one of his friends and jon went and they were goofing around and jon was shooting oppiste to what he shoots and a guy comes over and says lets play. Jon ended up beating that guy so bad.
