Excellent tear down, very helpful in boosting my confidence that I was using the right techniques to pull apart my overheating PS3. It has sentimental value, it was the first gift my wife gave to me after we married. I'm hoping to be able to keep it running for a long time.

@@hamajangz9586 dont think its easier bcoz the ribbon cable is easily detached from the motherboard connector. Either way you still have to disassemble the dvd drive in order to reattach the cable properly.

Thanks man, I had lost all hope for my PS3, so much that I bought a new one. Now I stumbled into this miraculous video of yours and I managed to fix my PS3, which wouldn't turn on for more than 10 seconds. Now I'll give one of the PS3s to my brother and we'll play together. Just wanted to say thank you for uploading this!! I was in the process of cleaning my disc laser and when I finally got to the step of reattaching the ribbon cable, I almost gave up entirely. So many reassembly guides expect you to be able to reattach the ribbon cable by squeezing your hand through the back. I found it impossible. Thanks to you I was able to get it reattached!

5:30 DO NOT pull on the flex cable at the bottom of the DVD drive! The retaining clip is the brown piece around the plug on the board Lift the brown piece up gently from power supply side and the cable will be free
PULL STRAIGHT UP , it will release it self, the retaining clip its not biting on the flex it won't damage the flexor! we open so many and never ever had issue with it. but if you want to fight with it and find a way to stick your finger under and not damage the flex and pull the clip out..sure do it. but there is no way in hell you can damage the flexor by pulling it straight.
That’s the best strip down I’ve seen. Especially the ribbon cable from the Blu-ray drive. I’ve always messed about with tweezers pushing it in underneath! Very simple to follow well done 👍

@14:55 you mention using heat to spread it out. Just out of curiosity, could I put my thermal grease pen (or whatever it is called) in a cup of hot water to heat the grease up in the container before applying it?
NO don't do that!, just do a X shape and you be fine. make sure you not using "heat grease", you need a proper "thermal paste" a GOOD brand thermal paste.
CiTRU5 i did but i put it back after the video. But nothing would happen if you forget it most of the screws are unnecessary. Thank you for mentioning it :p
Lol, I'm glad you pointed that out. I misplaced my screw somehow during the teardown... i think I might have put it in the heatsink shrowd?... whatever, now if i find a tiny black screw in the future, my OCD will kick in and Ill tear this thing apart again, lol. The power supply case does hold down that little tab too.

A massive thank you. I followed your guide and a bunch of others and to great success. Took me a total of 4h50m, because I forgot a piece and couldn't understand immediately where the part was coming from. I just wanna say hands down you have the best how-to tech retro console repair and maintenance videos on TH-cam. I like how you include BOTH tear down AND reassembly. I wish you’d be a little more descriptive with exactly what screws go where with the reassembly..I tend to get lost there. But that’s just me being nit-picky. Those are the only two tiny thermal pads? I just repasted my PS3 (same model as the one in this video) and I only saw those two thermal pads and I thought some others fell off or something, I was worried. Neat! But it took me 3 hours to get this done. I know i am slow, i was very careful and did exactly like what mentioned in the video. What are the chips that the thermal pads go over? Thank you for the feedback and your support to the channel by SUB :P Regarding your question: i would NOT recommend using the air can : CONS: its a marketing and really bad for electronics, as it give moisture air and has no power. use a dry compressor air e.g gas station pumps or simply get this item and you will save a lot in a long run and it has a dry and powerful air spray, amzn.to/3dGVBPu the air pressure of this is nothing compare to air can. u can use it for your pc and many other places. if you got none of the above use a vacuum, not the best choice but better than nothing,

Oh boi what happen, can you go back on the video and recheck, this is the first i hear something like this :/ if there is anyway i can help let me know send me pictures and i locate the places, also don't worry about the screws just place the screws that you can the console don't need the screws to work its just there so they don't make noise during transportation. as long as you place the CPU thick metal brackets you more than fine my friend : imgur.com/a/4Q72Qeg even if you don't place the cover the console will cool down better and last longer :P
I just jailbroke my slim and discovered the temps are 65 C and 73 C just during idling . It was used mainly as a blu ray player since it was new, and occasionally only for PS3 exclusives- and the thing would always make this expansion/contraction creaking noise while it was heating up, and again while it would cool after power-off. Hoping that a cleanup and repaste will correct that and help it run cooler.

Don't you have to remove the cpu and gpu cover? Or is that just optional because i saw a ps3 slim disassembly and thet guy removed the covers and re-pasted that part and also put paste on the covers like you.
Thank you for the feedback! if you wish to support the channel you can LIKE or SUB or both :P regarding your question: absolutely not the paste under there is no need to be replace and there is a very high chance of damaging the crystal dye by doing it. and if you do replace the paste under IHS you will only drop the temp by 2-3c max. and this is not a PC you can't over clock and only by re-pasting it's more than enough, and the temps won't hit 90c so no need to removing the IHS. i been doing this for over 17years and i do remove the IHS as per clients request but never recommend it. Just use a good thermal paste and you be fine: thermal grizzly kryonaut: amzn.to/3Gwsy0a
yep its not worth it absolutely not, that's why i don't make a video on how to do it, because not everyone can follow and do it. also won't see a performance increase.

Thank you for the feedback and your support, regarding your question: NO The extensions and all that has nothing to do with powering down mid game. there are only two things that can go bad here: #1. yes the washers are the nice sweet trick to get better results.on other models you didn't needed the washers because the spring metal brackets were very though to bend not like this garbage soft bending metals that they have now. so the washers will bring back the nice sweet tension to the heatsink.

Great video, I checked many and this was the best one. Great explanations, taking it slow, thank you very much! Subscribed. Just one question - at the back of the blu-ray dvd drive, I accidentally moved the tiny brown plastic thing connecting the brown flex cable to the motherboard. The brown plastic thing tilted around 45 degrees forwards (without detaching from the motherboard), then I moved it back exactly in place. Now, everything works but the blu-ray dvd drive does not. I'll inspect all the ribbon cables tomorrow to see if they're plugged in properly, but I am afraid it could be that brown thing I moved now has messed up soldering... is that possible? Thank you very much in advance.
It's my pleasure my friend, i appreciate your support. 🫠Regarding your question, let me see if I understand correctly: "You bent the jack of the brown flex cable right at 5:10, that jack?" If you bent that jack to 45 degrees and then back to 90 degrees, there's a 99% chance that you've cracked or ripped the jack legs from the motherboard. You'll need to solder it back to the board, or take the motherboard to a repair shop and ask them to quickly solder the jack pins back to the board. The pins might be cracked and not visibly detached. This should take the repair shop about 5 minutes, and most shops should do it for free. Should you have any further questions or requests in the future, please don't hesitate to ask me. cheers🍻

@@uFixTek thank you for great job showing the procedure. I just left the comment here so that others can put the screw back. When I was done, I got worried when I saw I had one black screw left :)
I watched your video and was very thankful, did all the steps like you did. Got 2 screws now that i cant remember where they came from, but the overheating is a bit less now. Then i watched another video and saw that you can open the CPU and GPU even more. The silver thing is just a "safety cap". Beneath is more heat compound that could be old. At least that is what i saw in that video from Nsc. Might be important to change that paste too.
Thank you for the feedback and your support and regarding the "thing" its not too important and if you wish you can replace the it. i don't remove the IHS because its too risky for the viewers to do so and they can really damage the cpu or gpu, and we have done many many test and the difference are: if you replace the IHS thermal compound you will only get 3c extra temp drop! (not worth it not even a bit)
@@uFixTek i heard that there are some ps3's that have a bigger problem with the thermal paste under the ihs. but i get what you are saying, you are trying to not make it too complicated and better save the viewer from damaging anything.
Thank you for the feedback! if you wish to support the channel you can LIKE or SUB or both :P regarding your question: I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND, at all to do a delidding to a CPU or GPU, because the risk over 1-2c drop its not worth it. you wont get anything extra with delidding we have done it and the results are the same before delidding.

I recently bought a never used CECH-2001A PS3 slim In mint condition still in its original box and everything. I recently opened it up and replaced the dead CMOS battery due to it sitting for so many years never being used, but I’m still a little hesitant on going further. The manufacture date on it is June 2009, so it’s going on 14 years old now.. surely the paste in it is aged, should I just toughen up and re paste it? I do want it to run for a long time. Thoughts?
Thank you for your feedback! If you wish to support the channel, you can like, subscribe, or both! Regarding your question, i highly recommend you to repaste, the paste is over 5 years and it has lost it's proprieties. if you want your console to last longer and not duffer any over heating, clean and repaste. use a High-Density paste: amzn.to/42QAwsW Should you have any further questions or requests in the future, please don't hesitate to ask me.
Gonna diassemble my PS3 Slim soon to replace the thermal paste, dusting, and replace the CMOS battery. Is there any place in the PS3 that's grounded where I can attach an ESD wrist strap alligator clip to?
you really dont need the ESD grounding but its ok to place it, but the BEST and secures place to use the ESD is always the ground wire in your outlet, you can purchase this cable and tape the white and black ends with electrical tape. and use the green wire to attach your ESD alligator. THIS IS THE BEST SOLUTION. Else just touch a metal table and or attach the alligator to a metal frame. amzn.to/3muNlDH info: imgur.com/a/2AGCBk1 Thank you for your support to the channel by a SUB :P

Got a question when you remove the hard drive from the PlayStation 3 do you lose any of your data do you have to install all the updates on the PlayStation.
you can remove the hdd and place the new drive and you will need to install everything dashboard and all. BUT you can remove the hdd and use and adapter to plug it in to the pc: amzn.to/2ZBz3Ik get two of the above and use another adapter to plug your new ssd or hdd to the same pc. and use this program to clone the old hdd to the new ssd: Macrium Reflect it will take 10min and when the cloning is done you plug the new ssd in to the ps3 and it will work like a charm with all your file and saves. thank you for the support to the channel and feedback

In response to your question, thermal paste is a compound applied onto the CPU and GPU. Its primary function is to improve the transfer of heat from these components to other surfaces. Additionally, it aids in filling the microscopic imperfections present on the copper surface of the heatsink and the CPU/GPU. Using high-quality thermal paste is of utmost importance in electronics. Think of it as akin to changing the oil in your car every six months to enhance performance and heat dissipation. 5:30 DO NOT pull on the flex cable at the bottom of the DVD drive!
The retaining clip is the brown piece around the plug on the board
Lift the brown piece up gently from power supply side and the cable will be free

Is arctic mx6 a good thermal paste for the ps3? And is a 4g tube enough?
Thank you for the feedback! if you wish to support the channel you can LIKE or SUB or both :P
regarding your question: it makes no difference in performance my friend you can place a artic mx 4 o5 o6 you will get the same performance.
as long as you use a good grade thermal paste (known brands) you more than fine but if you want and can spend more go with higher end.
the CPU or GPU of the ps3 are not over clocked so they don't hit 99c with any thermal passe you use it will be under 70c.
amzn.to/3tLbzzw
Is that too much thermal paste? I see people use pea sized amounts and it spreads well
Thank you for the feedback! if you wish to support the channel you can LIKE or SUB or both :P
regarding your question: don't worry place a fair amount just like in the video and you won't have any issues, if you put less you will have a higher chance that it may not spread around well. and remember from factory they place even more than what i showed. the paste its not conductive.

Great guide. Unfortunately, my ps3 is not turning on though. It was working before the disassembling, but now no sign of power when I plug it in. Any idea on what could have happened? Thanks in advance
sorry to hear about your incident, try to taking apart and make sure the power unit in plugged in correctly and the 12v cable tot eh motherboard and the flex cable to the power on board is pushed in all the way.
What are the chips that the thermal pads go over? I know the black square Sony chip controls USB or something but I don't know what the tiny chips under the RSX are or the R36X chips under the cell processor.
I was curious why those specifically had pads but nothing else.

Regarding your question: i would NOT recommend using the air can :
CONS: its a marketing and really bad for electronics, as it give moisture air and has no power.
use a dry compressor air e.g gas station pumps or simply get this item and you will save a lot in a long run and it has a dry and powerful air spray, amzn.to/3dGVBPu

Oh boi what happen, can you go back on the video and recheck, this is the first i hear something like this :/ if there is anyway i can help let me know send me pictures and i locate the places, also don't worry about the screws just place the screws that you can the console don't need the screws to work its just there so they don't make noise during transportation. as long as you place the CPU thick metal brackets you more than fine my friend : imgur.com/a/4Q72Qeg
even if you don't place the cover the console will cool down better and last longer :P
Hoping that a cleanup and repaste will correct that and help it run cooler.
it will for sure, just use a top quality thermal paste.

regarding your question: absolutely not the paste under there is no need to be replace and there is a very high chance of damaging the crystal dye by doing it. and if you do replace the paste under IHS you will only drop the temp by 2-3c max.
and this is not a PC you can't over clock and only by re-pasting it's more than enough, and the temps won't hit 90c so no need to removing the IHS.
i been doing this for over 17years and i do remove the IHS as per clients request but never recommend it. Just use a good thermal paste and you be fine:

yes the washers are the nice sweet trick to get better results.on other models you didn't needed the washers because the spring metal brackets were very though to bend not like this garbage soft bending metals that they have now. so the washers will bring back the nice sweet tension to the heatsink.

Regarding your question, can you send me as many pictures you can to my email and i get back at you quickly.
🫠Regarding your question, let me see if I understand correctly: "You bent the jack of the brown flex cable right at 5:10, that jack?"
If you bent that jack to 45 degrees and then back to 90 degrees, there's a 99% chance that you've cracked or ripped the jack legs from the motherboard.

Oleg Lukyanchikov yes my friend you are right , i had to reopn it and place the screw back, but nothing will happen if you dont the chassis holds the optic drive very tightly. But good observation. This video is old and back then i was trying to focus on the recording monitor and do the job in a position that i had the camera on my face almost. Now im used to record and do the service at the same time 😋 thanks for the support and comments
@@uFixTek thank you for great job showing the procedure. I just left the comment here so that others can put the screw back. When I was done, I got worried when I saw I had one black screw left :)
much appreciated :)
Thank you for the feedback and your support and regarding the "thing" its not too important and if you wish you can replace the it. i don't remove the IHS because its too risky for the viewers to do so and they can really damage the cpu or gpu, and we have done many many test and the difference are:
if you replace the IHS thermal compound you will only get 3c extra temp drop! (not worth it not even a bit)
@@uFixTek i heard that there are some ps3's that have a bigger problem with the thermal paste under the ihs. but i get what you are saying, you are trying to not make it too complicated and better save the viewer from damaging anything.
Can you do the delidding to add the thermal paste on the chip? thanks.
Thank you for the feedback! if you wish to support the channel you can LIKE or SUB or both :P

Thoughts?

Gonna diassemble my PS3 Slim soon to replace the thermal paste, dusting, and replace the CMOS battery. Is there any place in the PS3 that's grounded where I can attach an ESD wrist strap alligator clip to?
you really dont need the ESD grounding but its ok to place it,
but the BEST and secures place to use the ESD is always the ground wire in your outlet,
you can purchase this cable and tape the white and black ends with electrical tape. and use the green wire to attach your ESD alligator.
THIS IS THE BEST SOLUTION.
Else just touch a metal table and or attach the alligator to a metal frame.

you can remove the hdd and use and adapter to plug it in to the pc:

what does the thermal paste do?
Thank you for providing your feedback! If you'd like to show your support for the channel, you can either like, subscribe, or do both!
