This video is fantastic because you can actually see where the little thermal pads (the little squishy ones) go, in 4k. Everybody else's video from a decade ago was too blurry to see how the little thermal pads were. Helped out my playstation for sure when the pads fell off and I forgot where they went and was having freezing and red beeps.

Update: From my first comment your previous video, I must mention that spot where thermal paste is (next where the GPU is not on the motherboard) there is no area or sign of thermal pads but three spaces or gaps right above the fan assembly comparing to this model. The chip that you pointed out discoloring in comparison to my mine looks a bit small in size and in great shape also no place or sign of thermal pads.

Mines 25 a bit different on disc drive ports u can see
And the 30 where the fan is under the board model u can remove unless u remove the mother board first
My english not very good but this is very helpful tutorial video. Thanks! My only purpose is to clean my PS3 slim because whenever I play games it causes fan sound louder. I disassembled it and it has a lot of dust but as soon as I found out that my thermal paste is dry, I also cleaned it and reapplyed the same thermal paste as yours. Now my PS3 Slim not sounded like Jet Engine anymore and the temps also decreases. 👌

Fantastic video! Thanks so much. At one point I forgot to plug in the PS3 fan with the little connector and to put back the "tight" silver screws on the back of the motherboard (to attach the silver back sheet or whatever to the motherboard). I don't know if those things were mentioned in the video when putting it together, but maybe I missed them. The detail was excellent though!

Nice video. Everything is nicely shown, and i've been able to get rid of dust and other unholy things lurking in my PS3, as well as replacing the thermal paste.
Though the fan is now less furious during playtime, it still roars a little (maybe Dynasty Warriors 8 is THAT powerful.....), and i still have doubt about whether my thermal paste is doing its proper job or not (I used NT-H1 from Noctua).
Anyway, i got to see the insides of my old PS3. For that alone, i guess it was worth the click and repair attempt.

If you disconnect the fan from the assembly it is in, you don't have to unplug it from the motherboard. Keep the fan close to the board and tape it to the metal to keep it from getting crimped/cut. I just though of that and will be doing that on mine! It has plenty of wire to extend from it.

i have made a mistake saying .3mm , you need to get 2mm or 2.5mm any of them its fine, as the pressure from plates will press on them to get the best contact. we use 2.5mm for best results.

was only 2 thermal pads on my cech2501b and they stayed where they should. the whole area looks completely different. looks like this one is better cooled tbh

Regarding your situation: there is no reason for the delid on PS3s as we have done the test and with the best thermal paste the only temp drop was 2-3c MAX. its not worth the risk and showing people how to do it properly causes extra cost for proper delid equipment, and the risk for them to follow for that 2-3c drop, absolutely not worth it. if i had done it in the video 80%+ would be screaming that they broke the PS3 :(

I'm a proud owner of a PS3 Slim (model CECH-2504A) that I purchased last year and I would like to change the thermal paste. So I would like to know:
01) 15:05 - Can we use a cotton swab instead of a towel to remove the old thermal paste?
02) In an older video (th-cam.com/video/u8H4kOuljGg/w-d-xo.html), you do not recommend to remove the thermal pads, saying that we don't need to replace them. However, at 16:21, you change the thermalpads. Why did you change the recommendation? And if we should change, how often should we? Should we change each time we open the PS3 to clean and change the thermal paste?
3) How do you stick the thermalpads in it's place? Is there some sort of glue? Or will it stay there just because of the pressure?

regarding your question: sure you can use a cotton or anything a like, as there are no capacitors on top of IHS (integrated heat spreader), clean both side the GPU/CPU and the heatsink.
i say "not recommend" because its not important, but if you have the budget and the time to get one, sure thing replace them, you wont see any performance increase or anything, and those components will still be ok with old pads.
in case if you want to replace them get a good quality pads :

place a 2mm pads as it will squish nicely yo make perfect contact.

I also saw some videos where apparently some PS3 slim models have no thermal pads. Can you confirm that?
in my 18years of servicing never see a single ps3 without pads, those videos they must have reopened the ps3 few times and have lost the pads. i do get ps3 without pads because clients open them and loose the pads. but all of ps3 slim none slim they have pads. the pads will lower the component temp but it will not make any difference in performance of long lasting. all you need to worry about is the paste on gpu and cpu.

Regarding your question, please don't drill anything you will damage the console, use a bigger handle screwdriver and apply a lot of force on the screw and slow twist.

Hello there. Really nice video here. My PS3 is overheating and I want to attempt re-applying new thermal paste. I would like to ask a couple of questions though - _Once I disconnect the hard drive or any of these components, will all my save game data be erased?_ Please forgive my ignorance, I have never had to do this before. @@uFixTek Thank you for your help! I opened up my PS3 and cleaned out the dust from the fan and other places. When I buy thermal paste, I will then try and tackle the re-applying of the paste. For now, the cleaning *_REALLY_* helped out.
Before I cleaned it, my PS3 would get super hot after just 10 minutes and the fan would run very fast and loud. I took it apaart following your video, took it outside and with an electric air pump, I blew all the dust out from the fan, heat sink, power supply and as much as I could from the rest of the console.
Now my PS3 runs super quiet! I couldn't even tell it was on! I wound up playing it for a few hours and it was still silent. Just for safety purposes, I put a small fan on the side to blow cool air through the side ducts. I will buy the thermal paste and 99% alcohol. Again, thank you for your video and your advice. I subbed and gave a like.

Great video. But I have a question about thermal pads. In the video you mentioned 0.3-0.4mm thermal pads, if I heard correctly. Then you wrote in the description “Best Thermal Pads 2.5mm”, and the link inserted next to this phrase leads to thermal pads with 1.0mm thermal pads. To be honest, I am mistaken about this, for the same reason, please tell me the exact thickness of the thermal pad, I will be very grateful. Regarding your question, i do service this consoles on almost daily bases and , i would recommend you to go with 2MM or 2.5mm as it will squish to size when you screw out the plate and it will have a better heat transfer affect.

regarding your question: you will need to make sure you have inserted all the flex cable all the way inside the jack, you have no idea how many clients come in and they think they have inserted the cable all the way in and its never pushed all the way in, and that's one of the main causes of the dvd drive not sucking the dvds

Regarding your question, i would highly recommend you to use a new 2mm pads, but if not use the old one. never leave them without pads else it will over heat the components. but its safe to leave the stock pads back on.

lol dont worry, most of the screws are not important, nothing will happen. :) stick it with a tape to the side of the console and if in the future you reopen to clean follow the video and you will see the place for the missing screw.

@@travispeterson3924 the thing is that.3mm will do the job right, but the 1.5 does a better job based on out thermal component testing as the reason is that there is enough pressure to squeeze the pads down and then because it was 1.5 and squeezed down by pressure it does way better job. But the same case doesn’t apply on laptops, only here because of few factors. Therefore i would recommend 1.5 but anything from .3 up to there will be good.

regarding your question: yes you could replace them if you wish but its not a must, and you be fine with old pads, but if you want to replace them get 2.5mm amzn.to/3ToFys8
and in that package its more than enough pads for few services. just cut pads and place them on to where ever you see a pad inside, simple as that, there are many reversions of the ps3 fats, so don't go around counting pads as you will be delaying your service, just the the pad link and cut it and replace them.

What do you mean .3 mm thermal pads? The smallest I can find is .5 mm
I apologize for the confusion caused by my previous statement. I made a mistake regarding the .3mm measurement. What I actually meant to say was that 3mm pads would be suitable for the task at hand. Either a 2mm or 3mm pad would work perfectly fine, as the pad will be compressed to achieve the desired effect. Therefore, I recommend using a 2mm pad for optimal results.

People are saying deliding the CPU and GPU is the right way to do it, what's under the lid? Is it just the same thermal paste?
Don't intend to remove the IHS of the GPU and CPU. The compound they have underneath is not regular paste; it is a special adhesive thermal glue. If you try to remove the IHS, you will have a high chance of damaging the GPU unless you have experience doing it. Just repaste normally, and you'll be more than fine.
what about repasting under the cell and gpu covers? Kinda hard to get there cos of the glue, but the paste there is pretty much like a stone after a few years of using

regarding your question: DON't RISKT and waist your time to delid The GPU and CPU, the paste drying its fine, because its not a regular paste its an adhesive paste it supposed to dry. also if you even delid it and repaste you will drop temps by as far as 3-4 at most and trust me that 4c extra is not worth the risk and you won't get performance.

Man, you have said 0.3 0.4mm thermal pads, but I can only find 0.5mm. I have also found people recommending 1.5mm thermal pads and ifixit recommends in his YLOD repair guide 2-2.5mm in thickness. I am kind of confused here
get the 2.0mm pads, i just measure 3 ps3 slim pads and its 2.0mm and i opened a 4rth ps3 slim and it was 1.5mm
go with 2.5 mm as the pressure is enough to make the contact. go for it.

Hello, it is possible to remove the cover where there is no screw?
I bought a PS3 Slim recently and that one is a bit dusty and i wanted to change it, i have substitute for it but doesn't want to come off.

Regarding your question, the issue is very common and it is because of the over heating of the GPU.
i could give you step by step instruction and you can get it working again, but you will need to FOLLOW every step as i indicate, else don't do it.
#1. remove the motherboard completely and clean the old thermal paste from the CPU/GPU
#2. make sure you have no fan or open window or air flow on a table,
#3. place the motherboard on a flat level wooden base.
#4. grab a hair dryer and set it to max heat and medium air,
#5. hold the hair dryer over the GPU (the thicker BLOCK) with a 1" distance straight for about 9-12Min
#6. do the same on CPU chip.
#7. let the board COOL down on it's OWN, don't TOUCH or move or blow air to it, let it cool down for 15 min
#8. use a good thermal paste like : thermal grizzly kryonaut amzn.to/3RkvEtA

I just tested with x method on ps3 phat and is more quiet the pea method is cool very good but the fan is so loud so i perfer the x method on ps3 phat (fat) 80 GB.

hi and thank you for the feedback and your support and regarding of doing a IHS removal, i dont do it in my videos because of Two major factors:
#1. most of people that will try it they will damage the CPU or GPU by trying!
#2. based on many many test that we have done, the results are as following:
-with IHS paste replace you will get only 3c the most temp drop
its not worth the hassle to do try to remove the IHS just for 3c temp drop.
@@uFixTek ok, but the thermal paste under the ihs might get hard and this damages the cpu/gpu. you cant stop that with thermal paste on top of the ihs. the temp drop on these ps3's is more than 3c. but i get what you are saying, the process is dangerous. luckily there are a few instructionvideos on youtube for that. i even consider doing it with a ps3 at 67 c in smb idling.
the paste under the IHS its a different type of paste its not a regular paste it has a life span of 8years minimum, i would like you to do the following:
just repaste the top portion and test and check the temps, then change the ihs and test and you will see what im trying to say.
@@uFixTek That is exactly the process i am in the middle of. Already changed the paste on top of the ihs, but the ps3 still sounded like a turbine for a short time in a game. Then i watched a few more videos and many are saying the paste under the ihs is not really good. The temp of my ps3 idling in xmb is 67c. I will tell you how it changed after i get my heating pistol and try it.

Hey so that stripped screw I was talking about I managed to remove by knocking it round with force with a sharpened screwdriver, after replacing the thermal paste (MX-4) the temps actually got higher, wondering if this is normal as I was tilt mx-4 doesn’t take any time to cure and even then the temps I was getting before where hot and there was no paste left on the chips when I opened up the console so I’m a little confused right now

oki the issue that you facing, it is very common , and we do get this issue a lot in the store, not all heatsinks are evenly flat or balanced. in you case i would highly recommend to use a High-Density (thick) thermal paste, like Arctic Silver 5 amzn.to/3MmQDsQ
also i would highly recommend you to bend back the CPU clamp to 60 degree, so it would generate higher pull.
