I watched this before, but this time REALLY watched it. Welding that piece of material on the inside to take up the slack - another of your simple yet genius solutions.
This has helped me out tremendously! Just got finished building a latch for my fire box on a smoker I'm doing as well, using your technique. Keep the videos coming! Great work man!
I started watching your videos about 3-4 months ago. I think?? maybe a bit longer!! it seems to me like you're a humble person Love your videos keep up good work Buddy God bless you!!!
again as usual great video thanks for taking the time to make it. just a note I buy my spring handles on ebay or amazon just watch and always get the chrome the plain ones are just to thin clifton
thank you for the video, it was great help!!!!! I've been using brake springs off semi-trailers for my springs.. I'll tag you on Facebook to show you what I mean...
I found that 3/8th Gas Pipe drilled out with a 3/8th drill works better. More Pipe Wall to weld and you won't burn through so easily. Put it in a Vise and drill it out with a hand drill and 3/8th bit..
Hello Mr allen. First of all let me start by saying that you are a true craftsman when it comes to make BBQ pits .Excellent job.now I'm interested buying 4 of those ss spring handles. How much will you charge to sendem to south texas? Brownsville to be more specific.
Instead of using a piece of 3/8" stock inside the fire box, a right triangle with the wide point up would allow you to wedge the handle in place and provide a better seal for the door. Yea and you can find all the spring style handles ya want on EBAY
Great video as always Allen. I found the spring handles on eBay for as little as £2.50 a pop, I'm sure the US will have the same. God bless the Chinese :-)
Allen, how do you paint your pits? Do you use a grinder with a light grit to knock the milscale off or do you just prime and paint? Thanks for any help
Chris Sanchez I don't worry about the millscale except where I weld, I'll go over it with a wire wheel to get rid of spatter and stuff, then just use high temp BBQ paint, holds up good
What do you figure your time is worth on these builds. My uncle is a welder and he charges $75 hr for odd jobs and said it’s hard to get that building pits. Great videos as always!
Allen: I think I came up with an improvement on your design. I use a 10" 1/2" carriage bold instead of the 3/8 rod. Instead of using 3/8 I.D. pipe for bushing I use two 1/2" nuts. There's no chance of you burning through them when you weld to the door as that thin-wall tubing. If you need to adjust the latch tension slightly you can just screwing the handle in or out a turn instead of having to heat and bend the latch. Cost and fab time are about the same. Hope this helps and thanks for your videos.
Watching Allen doing a “how to” with Merle Haggard playing on the radio in the background.. TH-cam not much better than this! 😊
I watched this before, but this time REALLY watched it. Welding that piece of material on the inside to take up the slack - another of your simple yet genius solutions.

thanks ; you saved me a lot of time
Dude you making me a good welder.
Allen, do you think if you welded in a small wedge in there instead of that round stock it would hold better? Just a thought.
I'm using flat pieces now and they hold good but a wedge would be best most likely
awesome videos
can you make a video cutting and making the door for one of your grills
thanks keep up the good work
great idea keep up the great video's
I've been watching your videos for several years now (love them), but every time you strike the welder on video, I squint my eyes.. 😁
What welding machine do you use and what type of wire do you weld with? I would like to learn and weld my own BBQ pit.
I found that 3/8th Gas Pipe drilled out with a 3/8th drill works better. More Pipe Wall to weld and you won't burn through so easily. Put it in a Vise and drill it out with a hand drill and 3/8th bit..

Hey Allen are the washers you used stainless since you will be putting one in the inside of the firebox

Its called a Step Bit.
good stuff. great work
Nice and simple, thanks for sharing
Nice what gauge is the fire box
Instead of using a piece of 3/8" stock inside the fire box, a right triangle with the wide point up would allow you to wedge the handle in place and provide a better seal for the door. Yea and you can find all the spring style handles ya want on EBAY
Where do you get the cool grip handles.
thanks for the video Allen
This may be a dumb question, but do you use lawn mower wheels for the smokers?
Hey allen how much would you charge for a reverse flow smoker , it as to b at least 48 inches with a double shelf
Great video as always Allen. I found the spring handles on eBay for as little as £2.50 a pop, I'm sure the US will have the same. God bless the Chinese :-)
You should do a video on how you make and space your hinges for lids and doors in BBQ pits
I would like that too
Great vid, was wondering how to do this.

Order it online from Metals Depot. Not the cheapest route but you can get small quantities of anything you can imagine.
home depot carries it
Big help
where do you live? I live in San Angelo Texas. And there's three places I can get bulk chipping springs for practically nothing.
