    • @Rockpotje
      @Rockpotje 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Of course they were domestic league champions, otherwise they wouldn't be in the EC1 at that time. The point is that if you were building a good team then, you could keep your best players for a few years. Nowadays players just get bought away by the big clubs and smaller clubs don't get a chance to be better. It's not about youth academies, scouting networks and innovative playing styles anymore. It's about assembling the best players out there. Hence the rich clubs always win. Hell, even Barcelona relies on just buying nowadays.

He was in 2 previous team of the years with Birmingham and became the first million pound english footballer after his transfer to Forest, he also scored the winner, set up by Jon Robertson in their 1979 final against Malmo.

      The majority of them are boring and I find them a real turn off. The whole thing is designed to give the clubs from the so called "elite leagues" a bigger advantage than they have already. How the hell do Man City get parachuted into the group stages by right, just because of the league they play in, whilst Ajax (one of the most successful clubs of all time in the Champions League/European Cup) have to play in qualifying rounds? The whole thing is like having a marathon race, where certain runners are allowed to take drugs (just like so many clubs from "elite leagues" end up financially doping, with their rich sugar daddy owners). Then it turns out that the riff raff who aren't allowed to dope, have to run the full 26 mile course (with back markers getting periodically eliminated from the race) whilst the ones who are doping get to join the race at a later stage. Of course one of them would probably win the race, even with a more level playing field, but further barriers are put in the way of one of the non dopers winning.

      Tshepo Rabekane yeah but the system perpetuates that. The big teams get the top pots and easier games and when you top the group you get an easier game in the round of 16, it just makes it so the big guys have a better chance to win and they don’t need to be given that much of a head start considering they already have the better players and biggest budgets

By separating the teams into pots, they avoid the possibility of all big teams being in the same group or all small teams winding up in the same groups. The team that finishes bottom of their group gets the least amount of money so they end up selling whatever good players they have because the big boys come calling and they cant afford to match whatever salaries the elite teams are offering. The CL is set up for the rich to get richer and it makes it so we never get another elite team unless some Arab country decides to buy a club.

Surely the big difference is domestic league domination, take Barca and Real, they qualify every year because they receive the vast bulk of the Spanish TV revenues, Juve 6 titles on the bounce, Bayern winning the title by April every season. Your 10 year list had Liverpool in 15th hardly near the top, Atletico have been to 2 recent finals, the elite are not fixed, look at AC Milan and Man Utds recent decline. I believe it is also harder for non-Elite clubs to actually become Elite. Dortmund won two Bundesliga titles and made the Champions League Finals but it doesn't really show since they didn't seem to grow from that all that much. They're better known and respected, but their squad is way worse than before and they couldn't sign an Elite player even if they were willing to splash the cash. It's the same with Atletico Madrid who had some amazing seasons lately, winning La Liga, making it to CL Finals and had decent League finishes each season in the Spanish League. Sure, they are better of than years prior to the beforementioned successes but they still can't quite get there in terms of becoming Elite.

      @@Jay-jh5re Yes, different times. From the 70's to the 90's it was still possible for a Dutch team to compete in Europe. Ajax, Feyenoord and PSV all won silverware. Today it is nearly impossible. This season we even couldn't see the Dutch champion qualify directly for the group stages of the Champions League anymore, thanks to bad results in Europe. Luckily, both Ajax and PSV managed to qualify anyway through the play-offs but for a big club in an smaller league it is a disaster to miss out on the Champions League because they need the money so they won't get too far behind. It's great to see Ajax reach the quarter finals again but we all know that next season all the good players are gone and they have to rebuild again to stay competitive. Meanwhile, the big leagues and clubs are guaranteed 4 spots. I know their clubs have more quality but I would like to see a more balanced system.

    It's like people don't get what he's saying. There will always be elites and underdogs. But the current gap between elites and underdogs is larger. Also, it's more difficult now for a team to become elite because of the way football is structured. So there is less movement between smaller and bigger clubs. All the best players now a days are concentrated in a few clubs. You have top players as bench in big in big teams. GK that would be starters for 17 teams in the league warming a bench. This is the problem.

      the non-elite clubs are actually doing better in some places than they were in the 90s. the english title race has gone from 2 clubs to at least the top 4. spurs have broken into the european spots. leicester won the title. atletico won the title. valencia pushed for one a few times. dortmund returned to challenging during the late 2000s. napoli were runners up not long ago. granted, theyd all have a tough time winning the UCL, but thats normal...apart from those 5 years where 'smaller' clubs won it, but even then the final still had one major club.

    The problem is that this is not even a "champions" league anymore and here's why. The top 4 leagues - Spain, England, Germany and Italy have 4 guaranteed teams IN THE GROUP STAGE ALONE. That's half of the total participants in that phase. Prior to that the three best leagues had 3 teams in the group stage, while the 4th placed teams had to go to the play-off round (the final qualification step). France also got all of its teams qualified directly in the Group Stage, because Chelsea, the Europa League winners, already qualified as 3rd in the Premier League, giving the Europa League berth to the highest ranked association outside of the Top 4. Only 1 team from the Top 4 leagues did not qualify - Inter Milan.
    The gap between the rich clubs and the small clubs would widen even further with the introduction of a third competition - the Europa Conference League, where the lower ranked leagues (from 16th and below) would be. This will further deprive teams like Red Star, Dinamo Zagreb, Ludogorets, Astana and others from Champions League and even Europa League glory. In the past it was more simple - you had the European Champions Cup (reserved for domestic league winners), the Cup Winners Cup (for domestic cup winners) and the UEFA Cup (for the other teams).

      Imagine if Milan and Inter were as stable as the other big teams, top class players would be distributed in many leagues and better competition in champions league..Nowadays there are only a handful of top class teams to choose for young talents like M'bappe to sign for..Barca and Madrid are the obvious..then comes Bayern and Juventus...and then clubs with just money like PSG and Man City..
      Man Utd and Chelsea attract players but they are not doing well in the league..Liverpool develop decent players into world class but i don't think they could afford someone like an M'bappe!
      If we had Milan,Inter,Arsenal,Dortmund,Lyon,Marseilles,Roma,Valencia, Porto,Benfica,Ajax,PSV,etc.., with stable and high revenue it would level the playing field and give top players a variety of options to play for and make it exciting!!

      Delboy0 You're accusing an entire nation by saying "Spain is corrupt". Watch your language. You may be accusing the Real Federación Española de Fútbol (RFEF) which is still a pretty daring accusation.
      The thing is, you seem to forget PSG and Man City both have had financial issues because of the origin of their income.
      Real Madrid and Barcelona have had the 2 best players of the recent era. They've won everything in Europe until the point they've completely dominated it for 5 years. They are probably the two most popular, successful clubs in the world. But PSG still managed to, overnight, become one of the most powerful clubs and they stole Barça one of their best players, and the same for Juventus with Ronaldo. Neither of these teams have had any European success recently, apart from their domestic leagues. They have a pretty respectable fanbase but no way close to Real Madrid or Barcelona's. Why do you accuse La Liga so badly and with no proves of corruption, then, and not others much more suspicious?
      What about ATM and Sevilla success in Europe? How do you explain that, if they are so discriminated? They would be far, far away from European success if the 2 big clubs in Spain had corrupted everything here. The thing is, La Liga is a competitive league, both internally and in Europe (big difference with EPL competitiveness). And you seem a bit jealous about that.
      In fact La Liga is much more competitive including the entire table. I'm a Spanish 2nd Division's team fan and I can assure you we've got one of the most competitive 2nd Division, if not the best, above many European leagues (probably the 10th best in Europe counting every 1st and 2nd Division league, or so). So mid, low tabble teams in 1st Division are great teams too. Take a look at top 3 and bottom 3 teams of both, La Liga and EPL (there are 2 journeys of difference in favour of the EPL, take that in count). You'll see Barcelona is less dominant than both, Man City and Liverpool. That Huesca is far better than Huddersfield and that historical Spanish teams like Celta Vigo or Villarreal are fighting for not getting relegated. Yesterday, Girona won 1-2 to Real Madrid at Bernabeu. My team won Girona at their home two seasons ago.
      Just a few examples to disassemble the false image of EPL equality.

Big teams from smaller leagues like Red Star, Marseille, Ajax and Dortmund were able to challenge for the CL but now you have a generation of clueless plastic glory hunters who think that football revolves around teams like Barca, Real Madrid, Juve and Bayern. 🙁

      DW Kick off! There's too much money to be made/earned from the established big boys now for UEFA to show authority and make football more about meritocracy. The fact that half of the 32 teams in the group stages are from only 4 nations because UEFA were scared of a potential Super League shows how powerful the current big boys are, so I have little hope.

    • @aidygooner
      @aidygooner 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In my opinion there should be no seeding system for the group stages of the Champions League. The only thing that should separate teams in the groups are if teams are from the same league. A "group of death" or group of minnows with a chance to reach the knockouts would be more exciting for me.

    • @dwkickoff
      @dwkickoff  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That certainly would make things more exciting and give teams with smaller budgets a better chance. Or why not scrap the group stages altogether, knockouts from the start?!

    I am actually a fan of FCPorto and the time we won the champions league was definitely unexpected, although we had a pretty good team, but the others teams you talked about dortmund, ajax and marseille were not so much because they all had great teams when they did it. The problem i have with football nowadays is that it is always the same teams that get to have great teams like barcelona, real madrid, bayern munich, juventus, man city, psg, etc while in the past the clubs who won the champions league always had great teams but were more varied. Nowadays, any team that isn't a part of this group of teams that starts to gather some good players has to sell them one season later, which is what is going to happen to Ajax. Also the first time we won the champions league in 1987 we had a great team that would be impossible to make nowadays.

      I understand what you mean about 2nd/3rd/4th places teams ect... But would you rather watch the teams that finish in those places than watch the teams who win the league in Lithuania Hungary and Moldova? Or you suggest we watch a competition where the winners or Europe's top 8 leagues compete? because that'd be boring

    • @muhdahnaf7927
      @muhdahnaf7927 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DanLewis90 I like that Champions League format. But I want European Cup to maintain as first-tier competition. Then some kind of second-tier competition, maybe teams are picked like in Champions League, and also in group stage format. But for European Cup, I want them in group stage also, so other teams have chance to fight another team and do not end the competition so quick.
      The European Cup are being made so each champion of EACH country in Europe can compete together in one competition (as there is word 'Europe' there). They don't take considerations of big clubs' and their fans' demand so much. It doesn't matter who are strong or weak, or how many goals to be conceded, or how many star players in that team. It is European Cup, every country should have chance to join the continent's competition. Other continents should do the same thing.
      Nowadays, I see Champions League as a cash cow for elite clubs like Bayern, Man City, PSG, Juventus and Spain's Big 4. UCL has been known for match-fixing, especially that hot or cold balls. I see UCL as those aforementioned clubs' playground, rather than truly elite European's competition, which make it pretty bias towards other clubs.
      These popular clubs' fans' power and big clubs' egoism have led to the existence of this cash cow. We wouldn't see any underdogs stories or surprising ending anymore. There is also financial imbalance between clubs, where big clubs earn more and more money while other clubs getting loss, until some of them went bankrupt or having high debt to be settled. Because of this financial imbalance, where big clubs have become out-numbered, they begin an idea to make European Super League, which is seperated from their national league and also any European Competitions.
      If you guys really want your favourite teams to compete in European stage eventhough they are 2nd, 3rd and 4th placed, let that Champions League or any other names you want to become 2nd tier competition. For me, European Cup should be maintained until today. Let each country in Europe having a chance to represent in the big competition like these.

      @Sume Rossini because if they do, then they stop being an underdog. take for example Juventus who were an underdog in 2015 and reached the final and are now one of the strongest teams in football. another example is Atletico Madrid who have been on par with Real and Barca for quite a while ever since Simeone came.

  • @Bruno-gj5vn
    @Bruno-gj5vn 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Regardless of where you stand on the underdog controversy, 55% spread according to final place + 30% according to 10y ranking is pretty unfair! The EPL is also an "elitist" competition, but they have a much more fair distribution of the money, which makes the league more balanced and therefore sustainable in the long run, even with huge budget discrepancies like Man City's. Just look at the NBA, with some 50 years of financial success, also due to salary caps, drafts... US leagues as a hole (NHL, NFL, MLS) have very rich teams, but they also have that mentality of giving the mid ones a fighting chance, at least in theory.

    • @dwkickoff
      @dwkickoff  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @Bruno-gj5vn
      @Bruno-gj5vn 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dwkickoff If not a model in and of itself, they certainly could learn a thing or two about how a league should "attempt" to level the playing field, i.e., taking Financial Fair Play Regulations way more seriously. And I emphasized the word "attempt", because it doesn't have to mean the end of dinasties for the bigger teams, as we're seeing on NBA's Warriors or NFL's Patriots. But at least you have rules in place not to further increase the abyss.

    though a lot of the points are not great, he has a point about the money. It has evolved into a game where the rich clubs don't need to worry about losing too often. Im a dortmund fan, and how i see it, even if we somehow managed to win the league one or two years like with klopp, bayern can afford to cash out on player after player until the fix what they need. You'd never see a lewandowski, or a kimmich at dortmund anymore since we don't have the financial backing, to hand out 250k a week contracts and sign 50 million euro players. Our money comes from feeding teams like bayern talent, think sancho being sold to Man U today, so we get some good players for a season and have to move on, instead of keeping a consistently fantastic squad like man city, madrid, bayern etc.

    Even if it means that teams like BVB, Schalke and Borussia Mönchengladbach are less competitive in the CL, I would never scrap the 50+1 rule. Unlike the EPL, the fans are the club in the Bundesliga and that's what makes the Bundesliga so special.
