No need for deep analysis. Players aren't hungry anymore and they know they are not big winners since what they did in PL didn't work well in CL. Defensively weak midfield. Weakend creativity: KdB has been out for injuries. Too much emphasis on possession. And most importantly Haaland doing absolutely nothing for gameplay and waiting in between the CBs to score easy goals. A lot of signs that the man who coached prime Barcelona is gone. @@sportschool3537I agree with you to some extent. There are more than one ways to play football. Countries and academies have their own football culture and players are developed that way. Any South American will tell you that Argentinians and Uruguayans have always developed great passing and possession teams. Brazilians have often developed technically gifted players who would play roles and move into space... You can win with a very strict tactical approach or with a more role-oriented, positionless approach, it really depends on the players you have and in what type of culture they have been developed in
@@sule.A same logic can be used to say the more experience he has to comeback from his choke the older he gets. So it's all just the perspective you choose to see
Barca have the same problem with Frenkie De Jong, who holds the ball for too long, likes to dribble...but you need quick decision making in that DM position...
I feel like it is a bit different though. While I agree that Frenkie sometimes holds the ball for too long and slows down play, his dribbles can be really useful. He is incredibly press-resistant and often turns around an opponent when recieving a pass from the gk or cb with the opponent coming in his back. This creates a lot of space for him to dribble into. Also, he doesnt dribble to get passed defenders but when he has empty space ahead. This way he will bait opponents into stopping him, disrupting their structure and creating space for a delayed pass. But yeah, sometimes he does do pointless dribbles that delay the play, or even takes a lot of time without dribbling. The key is distinguishing good from bad dribbles, and he does both. But saying that he is a problem because of it seems wrong. Because sometimes the dribbles are actually dangerous and Barca play different from city so even if he was always slow you still could not say that it is a problem for his team
It’s a slightly different game from dribbling and holding the ball they catching the ball and releasing it you need to focus on the sort of game plan add variety?
rodri truly is a monster. has a exceptional passing range, powerful and well placed shot, important goals in the locker, physicality, positioning, tackling.with taht gone and no one to replace that defensive cover and the system described will give away a lot of chances and goals. combine the loss of range, goals, turnovers and assists and get xg dropoff. add in out of form players on the wing and injuries to the central areas and u have a true crisis. brionging back the 3-2 system is the way out.
I think it's also because so many teams in the PL have got better in possession. City aren't an athletic team, so others are so much better at playing through their counter press now. Most likely solution would be to have Gvardiol and Lewis invert into MF next to Kova (like at Bayern), with Ake and Akanji the CBs.
This is why Liverpool are going to annihilate them in a few weeks. Anfield aura an athleticism. Szoboszlai, Elliott, Jones. They will eat City's midfield alive.
This is the way a man develops everything is not a simple ride. Hard times are always a lesson, we are going thru this but from this we will come out stronger.
Pep losing 4 games in a row is being blown way out of proportion. His standards are so ridiculously high-consistently dominating leagues, winning trebles, and redefining how the game is played-that even the slightest dip feels like a crisis to the social media brigade. In reality, no other manager is held to this level of scrutiny because no one else has set the bar so high. A few losses don’t erase the fact that he’s built one of the greatest dynasties in football
It is a crisis BECAUSE of the high standards they set. Look at how long it's been since they lost 4 in a row. And now teams have seen Brighton and Bournemouth beat them, more teams will be confident playing City and being aggressive against them.
And he has so many players that are injured or had problems with injuries. He has only one defender from first 11 this season that is without any problems and that is Gvardiol. City is almost unlucky this year like Barcelona last year. When you miss so many players you will lose.
There is one thing that you can't eliminate here which is injuries but aside that, there were cracks of this from last season, the thing is Man City somehow has become too predictable. I don't know if its because they play now to their striker cox before Haaland came and also when Aguero was injured at Man City, they used midifielders to play as strikers which made it really difficult for the opposition because they don't stand at one place like a striker would keeping the opposition defense on their toes but am not saying Haaland and Aguero stand at one place but as a defender when you know you are about to face Haaland and or Aguero you know you have to protect your penalty area compared to let's say Foden or Debruyne playing as a false 9 which you know you have to follow them almost everywhere to avoid overloads and throw them off their game. Another thing is teams no longer want to sit deep against Man City like they used to, they come at them and it's sometimes frightening how Vulnerable Man City look at the back. I know they miss Rodri and a lot of their injured players. They don't have squad depth too. Pep sold Sergio Gomez, Mahrez, Alvarez, Philips and a lot of his top players without getting a proper replacement for them. Another reason is the attackers are not creating and scoring goals. In fact per stats this season they average 2XG per game the lowest since Pep took over and they concede more than 1XG per game the most since Pep took over. The last reason which is really factual in my opinion and it has happened to Barcelona before is a lot of the key players are out of steam and are ageing. Debruyne, Gundogan, Bernardo, Walker and a couple are in their early 30s and some are also pushing 30. When this happens you lose the hunger you had at 20 or 25 especially when you win every trophy available in club football. It happened to Barcelona and am seeing cracks of this in Man City, but the difference is they have Pep right now who can turn the situation around but trust me its not going to be easy and this doesn't look like a surface issue too. Against Tottenham after they lost they were smiling on the bench, against Bournemouth they looked like they couldn't run even if the game was played 10 times again, Against Sporting it was the first time i saw Man city players lost on the pitch since Pep took over and against Brighton they looked like they were fed up. There was one common thing that happened in all of these matches too, every time they went behind it never felt like they will score compared to other seasons where you knew they will eventually win the match. Am not saying they won't bounce back coz i know they will but there is one thing that is clear here, they are slowly regressing
Well explicated. Most players ageing out and no hunger as before. They are very prone to ciunter attack. But lets wait and see how the season unfolds for them
this is not a crisis yet. city are on the brink of crisis if things dont improve after the international break. its moments like that make u realize how priceless rodri is.
@@naveenj2284It is a crisis. Imagine all the oil money and just seeing your club looses 5 straight.lol. Rodri is overrated, I don't even knew him until BalonDOr winner was announced. And I was like: Who TF is that Rodri guy??
It's not just Rodri and Walker who have been integral to this system, it's also John Stones. I think when he comes back from injury he'll boost City's performances.
Finally ! Not Another TH-cam Pundit just adding Random Arrows on a Video thumbnail, going on to justify a single standout irregular moment and using it to Say that it is the Reason one Team Beat Another ! F*cking Beautiful Analysis
that's the problem when the system is more important than the players, you become completely dependent of the players who are able to acomplish the exact goal of his role in the system, when you don't have at least 11 perfect robots, everything falls in the last season ancelotti lost his captain, his main striker, his goalkeeper, his defender duo, all his midfielders have had some injury at some point, and his main player lost almost half of the season, but he still managed to win the supercup, the national league and the champions league... because he can build a team around the characteristics of the players he have available, the most important are the way those players interact and connect with each other than a perfect previsible system
It's the same story for more modern teams, you play around your #10 but build up from your #8. scholes, lampard, gerrard, kante, carrick, fabregas, busquets, guardiola, arteta, iniesta, etc. different ways of using them, problem is if the coach can't limit the weakness or maximize the strengths
I feel like he's playing too narrow, and leaving the wide areas exposed is causing trouble. Whenever they face a team that uses a low block and makes long passes to the wings, they struggle. City's center backs, except for Walker, aren't fast enough to chase down a speedy winger from the opposition. I think he finally needs to invest in a fullback or wingback and rely on a 4-3-3 or 4-1-3-1 formation to provide extra protection on the wings.
The major problem is the absence of stones, ruben, Akanji, grealish and Debruyne, when they fully come back. Pep will go back to his treble winning season team. Gvardiol, Ruben and Akanji will play back 3, stones and Kovacic will play in deeper role with stones playing hybrid CB role, bernado, grealish Debruyne and Savinho will be the attackers and Haaland upfront in a 3 2 4 1 formation. Am sure city will not be the same again after this international break. Alot of things will change because some players will be coming back from their injuries.
It is amazing how many ppl look to break down City's problems, and pretend that Rodri is the only absentee in that team. Even KDB missing doesnt half the coverage of Odegaard missing a few games for Arsenal As a non-City fan, I don't even recognise half of the players getting onto their bench now (+ a few recent starters)
@jaywrightesq.7730 all problems have been centered on Rodri's absence but they're easily forgetting that in the start of this season city was already winning games and were unbeaten even in Rodri's absence. All problems came when KDB, grealish, Ruben, Akanji, Stones, Ake got injured and walker wasn't fit because he had spent over 2 weeks without training, city literally had no fit CB to pair with Gvardiol who was the only fit player, then ended up going in the academy to bring Jahmai just 17 year old boy and was given bigger games like tottenham, sporting, Brighton, any decent result would've been a draw and a hardly fought one with such a weak defense.
@@Exodus_Gaming7 how? The problem is injuries, like you saw against tottenham, city didn't have any defensive midfielder because kovacic is out for a month and Rico lewis who's a RB was the one playing in that position. Stones was just coming from injury and didn't have enough match fitness that's why you saw his defending was awful, KDB didn't start the game because he's also in recovery that's why haaland didn't have that much supply. Do you really think Rico lewis an 18 year old boy who's not even a typical DM would conquer the Midfield over pappy sarr and Bisouma who are one of the best Midfielders in the league? Even a blind person would easily predict a city loss by just hearing the lineup.
Thank you for this very interesting tactical lesson about city weaknesses. I think it is also because they won so much and need fresh and winning people
The cruciality of playmaking defensive midfielder is the reason why Inzaghi's Inter has a clear backup for Calhanoglou in Asllani and players like Barella and Zielinski being also able to fill those shoes when needed.
Without calhanolgu in the first of the season last year, inter struggled against teams that know how to sit back and maintain their defensive structure such as empoli for example. The forward passes were lacking and his absence was felt. I think back up players should be closer to starting 11 quality to avoid the drop in standards of the team.
Nice video especially where you talked about the single pivot and the attackers leaving so much space behind. Can you discuss arsenal this season and their approach to the games in all competition i feel like its been to safe where players dont engage so much in risk like line breaking passes or even commiting numbers to attack.

Amazing video, thank you! You make a really solid argument for city's shortcomings, and the potential solution. It seems that City would benefit not only from reverting back to Guardiola's Bayern structure, but playing more on the counter themselves, or just going long on occasion. I remember City's game against Arsenal at the Etihad a few years ago, when Arsenal looked genuine title contenders early in the season before falling away. City couldn't play through them, Arsenal were just so good at pressing from the front and clogging up the midfield, so at one point City just went "sod it" and played it over the top, completely bypassing everything Arsenal was doing. City went on to beat them handily by several goals, but never really seemed to play that way again. I bet such a style would have helped them against teams like Madrid that they've struggled against in recent years too
Pep will ruin savinho and doku just like he did Grealish. Pep signs dribblers and teaches them to stop dribbling because if you lose the ball pep gets more angry He cares more about maintaining possesion than actually scoring
So why was Manchester city knocking them in for fun at the beginning of the season when we had no Rodri. But a very good analysis I agree with it entirely.
True,,, but he tried doing it with a less energetic/athletic DM. (Casemiro) Because unfortunately this were the cards he was dealt with. The interesting part is, in his systemhe wanted a progressive DM like Kovacic in F.de Jong instead of a rodri-esque DM.
No , he wanted de jong as a no. 8(until they got mainoo). He made the assumption that mctominay and fred would be good DMs to play next to de jong, he was wrong. Casemiro was a last minute panic buy buy the director of football.
@@Doctor_Kroom if you look at the game against Brentford, (which he lost 4-0) he tried using Erikson as a DM who was press resistant and could turn and progress the ball (which De jong does extremely well) but it did not work out bcos of several issues i.e: De gea was not good at ball playing and Eriksen was not athletic/physical enough so they decided to go for a physical DM and Casemiro was the only available player since the window was nearly closing.
The fact city always bounced back is true but considering the amount of injury it's gonna be difficult this season I hope we win and make it 5 in a row
I rarely leave comments on videos but this was a really excellent piece of analysis. As a city fan who’s watched about 90% of our games this season I entirely agree with the issues you mentioned. This analysis was far more insightful than anything else I’ve seen in the media.
What people don't understand is there were signs of this least season and i think he even made a video about it or said it in one of his videos. Yes when Rodri comes back a huge percentage of this problem will be solved but guess what Rodri can't play till next season. Pep has to find a way because tbh he hasn't really played any big team so far this season and they only big matches he has played in my opinion was against Inter and Arsenal and it almost went south for City. Imagine Bayern, Liverpool, Barcelona , Real Madrid running at this City highline. Pep has to find a way which i know he will else they will struggle especially with the absence of Rodri and those talking about Zubimendi, he doesn't guarantee solving all these problems, he also has own weakness just like Kovacic and he just got injured too.
Season after season a new challenge is rhrown at Pep And season after season he fonds the solution This is just another one of those seasons We'll come through

@1zbossz when will you realise he just recommended the players he wanted and never did the negotiation of the price because it was not and is not part of the Job description of a manager. In his first season: He never lost a Carabao cup match, and only lost one Fa Cup match which was the final. Lost only once at home. His goalkeeper won the most clean sheets (meaning they were the best defensive team that season. They were on course to win the europa league but suffered a set back when Martinez was injured(btw they were eliminated in the quarters and had they reached finals they were on course of a treble) and then next season went on to have one of the worst injury crisis in Premier League history (despite using more money as you put it) and one of the worst seasons ever. so basically your statement makes no sense at all.
With all my respect. you cannot post a title like that after Guardiola dominated PL for a decade. Sure this year they are struggling and its fair to name it, but thats possible without clickbait in a headline
Thought so too at first, but then I realized that the title is ambiguous. He probably means "self destructing" as a verb, not an adjective. As in, the tactics are imploding at the moment, not that they are self-destructive in general.
This prove that he still need a individual skill players, some people said that he build a system so still its a player who have abilities to deliver shows us that this sport is still a individual performance that matters
After watching Casado's 2nd game vs Switzerland. Where he was stationed at a single pivot, he completely bossed the midfield while being marked the whole game. Casado won 11/12 duels, 3/4 tackles, 6 fouls drawn. He has every bit of Rodri in him except for the height. That's where Bernal came in. Bare in mind Bernal was supposed to be the starter while Casado remained in the bench. Bernal 6ft4/194cm a physical freak with agility and mobility, areal duel winning machine, crazy vision, wide range of passing, calm and compose on the ball. Bernal is a coaches' dream DM. And to think Casado, who in this season the best spanish DM after Rodri, was benched for this 17 years old monster, says everything about Spanish talent, especially la masia. If Pep wants to see success in the near future he has to get either Bernal, Casado, or Zubi. Barca even have replacement for Casado waiting in case he gets injured that's Pau Prim, who like Bernal is a gifted DM waiting to make his debut. Damn that's too much.
@TotalllFootball don't be silly. The type DM Pep wants can only be found I Spain, especially in La Masia. Barcelona can't play all of them. Casado, Bernal, and Pau Prim are all talented and have the kind of profiles Pep wants. Rn Pep's only reliable option is Zubi.
@TotalllFootball that's why I added Zubi here. Casado and Bernal are untouchables, but Zubi is available. Man city is definitely making a push for Zubi.
Three things are guaranteed in life Death Taxes And pep guardiola innovating his own broken tactic that no other manager can do to dominate march to April and win the league
The stubbornness of this man is incredible... Arguably the best manager, coach in the world and tactician par excellence... But with all the resources at his disposal (considering other teams, and their exuberance of talent and depth in the squad), he should've made a double pivot work by now with Kovacic and Gundogan as a makeshift... Don't get me wrong, I do believe they'll bounce back... But with a luxury squad like that how do you not have an effective back up plan when one of your starters is injured?? Consider other managers, and how much more they need to adapt in these situations; even his own proteges... No excuse here...
You missed the BIGGEST Elephant in the room - City's pending 115 FFP violations has prevented them from upgrading their lineup with massive transfers of much needed top quality new players. This is a team that in the past would spend hundreds of millions of euros every transfer season to build this incredible roster of players. This past summer, City spent only €25 million on ONE player in their transfer business. And until the 115 FFP violations are settled, City cannot spend hardly anything, since 1) nobody really good wants to join a team that might end up relegated as punishment, and 2) spending hundreds of millions of euros before the 115 FFP violations are settled would be like waving a red flag at a bull, just daring the Premiere League to punish them.
dude, you really break it down to what it really is, not relegation rumors, no nothing, for the way that Pep wants the team to play, its necessary to have Rodri, we DONT HAVE any other pivot as good as him

Fantastic analysis for the most part, great editing and amazing graphics, kudos to the production team for the work! Unfortunately some details are simply inaccurate or building toward a rather sensation seeking headline. Not going to delve too deep into the details but Pep has jot forgotten anything he has learned in any of the previous leagues. In every single championship he built his teams to 3 key pillars: the league, his key players and his general, ever evolving football knowledge. In Barca he built his team around the strength of the team's spine: Xavi, Busquets, Puyol and Messi. (Yes, Iniesta was a factor amongst many others, but these guys were the key components). Position and ball control was key along with short pass darting chance creation in tight spaces (where nobody expected any harm). Impossible to replicate anywhere else, because this team composition was a one off. In Bayern he built his team on pace and physicality matching the league's requirements and the likes of Lewandovski, Ribery, Lahm, Kroos, Robben were key to achieve the success of his strategy. Difficult to recreate but not impossible. In City he went and tried a little bit of everything: possession based play with short passes, long ball penetration, speedy wingers, full backs, counter play (not overly prominent but they have practiced it a lot), everything under the sun because the team was endlessly transforming thanks to losing multiple key players almost every year. He has done tremendously under the circumstances (Reminder: PSG has roughly the same budget as city, not to talk about other Spanish or English teams at some point of their history, yet the records show that Pep has outdone every team, coach, organization in terms of stats and silverware in the national leagues - CL is a different beast) and will continue to be extremely dangerous even if they don't win the league this year. He's following the footsteps of Sir Alex, time will tell how far he's going to go but I'm quite sure that just like always, he will find the solution to the current dip in form. 4 leagues in a row guys in the PL... nobody has matched this in the history of English football, few have won 3 championships in a row, but nobody has done it 4 times one after the other. That demands respect.
United have 2 proper CDM's at the moment, 1 old and 1 young. When Casemiro leaves Ugarte will take over, it is City's time to struggle without a proper CDM.
It's not about the Tactics it's about players being unsure or dropping off thinking Pep will leave that's why Man City have renewed his contract to clear things up and squash the rumors. Remember what happened to Liverpool when Klopp decided to step down even Alex Ferguson had to rethink his decision when he announced he was leaving in the 90s cause the Team started losing games.

They've taken this completely out of the game... the only player to have freedom in Guardiola's systems ever was Messi and that was just cause even someone as stubborn as Pep understood that you can't tell God what to do thankfully so he let Messi do his thing... but if you need someone to be the best footballer of all time to give him freedom then you're not a coach, you're a self-important tyrant...

Barca have the same problem with Frenkie De Jong, who holds the ball for too long, likes to dribble...but you need quick decision making in that DM position...
Agree with you 100%
I feel like it is a bit different though. Because sometimes the dribbles are actually dangerous and Barca play different from city so even if he was always slow you still could not say that it is a problem for his team
the difference is that we can play casado
It’s a slightly different game from dribbling and holding the ball they catching the ball and releasing it you need to focus on the sort of game plan add variety?
well barca have solved that you see how fluid they are without FDJ
Same as how madrid this season have to adapt not having a proper possession controller and passer in kroos because
rodri truly is a monster. has a exceptional passing range, powerful and well placed shot, important goals in the locker, physicality, positioning, tackling.with taht gone and no one to replace that defensive cover and the system described will give away a lot of chances and goals. combine the loss of range, goals, turnovers and assists and get xg dropoff. add in out of form players on the wing and injuries to the central areas and u have a true crisis. brionging back the 3-2 system is the way out.

Exactly

But lets wait and see how the season unfolds for them
Can't say anything about hunger but the ageing problem is real, you can see it when Bernardo or gundo plays

By the way your analysis have made me understand the modern football better. Thanks
This is very good , in-depth analysis of City semi crisis
that's the problem when the system is more important than the players, you become completely dependent of the players who are able to acomplish the exact goal of his role in the system, when you don't have at least 11 perfect robots, everything falls
in the last season ancelotti lost his captain, his main striker, his goalkeeper, his defender duo, all his midfielders have had some injury at some point, and his main player lost almost half of the season, but he still managed to win the supercup, the national league and the champions league... because he can build a team around the characteristics of the players he have available, the most important are the way those players interact and connect with each other than a perfect previsible system
7:50 Walker doesn't have that pace anymore, which has been made obvious this season.
Walker is shit this season
Busy with 2 family's
It's the same story for more modern teams, you play around your #10 but build up from your #8. scholes, lampard, gerrard, kante, carrick, fabregas, busquets, guardiola, arteta, iniesta, etc. different ways of using them, problem is if the coach can't limit the weakness or maximize the strengths
The list was fine till you added arteta lmao.
@ hey credit due where credits due, wenger never wanted him off
Savinho also doesn't like tracking back out wide so Walker is overloaded on the right
Walker don’t even play this season, Lewis is the starter
Even KDB missing doesnt half the coverage of Odegaard missing a few games for Arsenal
As a non-City fan, I don't even recognise half of the players getting onto their bench now (+ a few recent starters)
It's more than that
@@Exodus_Gaming7 how?

This is probably the best football analysis I've seen in a long time
Will be waiting for that end of season tactical masterclass video.

Pep signs dribblers and teaches them to stop dribbling because if you lose the ball pep gets more angry

So why was Manchester city knocking them in for fun at the beginning of the season when we had no Rodri. But a very good analysis I agree with it entirely.
Eric ten Hag did this on ManU and they fired him. As simple as this is
True,,, but he tried doing it with a less energetic/athletic DM.

The only way for Pep to get Casado or Bernal is to get back to Barcelona

Flawlessly articulated. I don’t expect him to struggled this much considering his yearly budget.
Beautiful explanation!
Just got cooked 4-0 by Spurs 😂
Why dony Pep just promote young player
Who's here after their loss to MANCHESTER UNITED
dude, you really break it down to what it really is, not relegation rumors, no nothing, for the way that Pep wants the team to play, its necessary to have Rodri, we DONT HAVE any other pivot as good as him
Rodri proving why he's the ballon'dor winner, while not even playing is crazyy🤯
that's not how it works. it only proves why he is ballon dor nomination FROM Man City team
The Euros in Spain's victory signaled what the next evolution is
This video just shows that Rodri fully deserved the Balon Dor
The teams that have dominated Pep's Mancity in recent times have all played well excecuted counter attacking football. Defended well and played on a counter.
-Ten Haag's Manutd FA cup final
-Ole Gunnar Solkjaer's time at United
-Amorim's sporting
To mention but a few
Destroyed footballers technical abilities and individualism with his tactics
Other teams have figured that out. Mess up pep's system and his players are terrified to try anything different.
Name me one player whose technical abilities he destroyed. He made Fabian Delph look like a technical player.
@@vespasiancloscan7077 Gotze, grealish, Phillips, Hleb, Douglas Costa, Thiago, Nolito, Shaqiri, Yaya Toure, Eto'o, Zlatan, Henry(to an extent) Should I continue?
@@TheeIdol you could continue and prove yourself wrong further, yes. This is surreal
My problem with Pep and Arteta are very simple, they lack a plan B thats y i see it very difficult for him to find a way out for City. I will always rate Mourinho on top for his tactical ingenuity
I mean Pep will spend 150m in the January window and bring someone in. Exactly what they did in the season that Dias was brought. Ultimately in modern football it's about how good of a player you can sign.
Finally, an easy to understand tactical analysis!!
I really enjoy watching your videos 👏👏👏
It's not about the Tactics it's about players being unsure or dropping off thinking Pep will leave that's why Man City have renewed his contract to clear things up and squash the rumors. Remember what happened to Liverpool when Klopp decided to step down even Alex Ferguson had to rethink his decision when he announced he was leaving in the 90s cause the Team started losing games.
Great analysis, been saying single pivot in buildup is an issue (without elaborating as you did), moreso with our current options…
