Having so many clubs from the same country competing in the same European league is absurd. The gap between the top 4 and the rest is baffling, how can Ligue 1 Liga NOS or Eredivise improve like that ? With 2 or 3 times less clubs in the competition ? Having to play 8-10 matches with less squad depth than English clubs ?
Give 16 berths to the top 5 league. Give the next top 10 league winners a slot, having 26 berths from 15 different leagues. Another 2 berths for the CL and EL winners, and the remaining 4 as a playoff system
@Tayananiswa Zvikaramba no because who will be excited to see more dutch clubs in CL, whats intersting about az or twente playing against real or liverpool or bayern
As a watcher of Ligue 1, how does UEFA expect the league's competitiveness to increase if they don't give more Cl spots to Ligue 1 clubs (not talking about PSG). If these clubs revenue don't increase, they can't get better meaning the league stays the same and it is back to being irrelevant which means no revenue again. IMO Ligue 1 should at least get a 3rd CL spot, and a oil sheikh/ russian oiligarch is welcome.
@@mustafaabdulsahib9317 because with the cl money they can actually get good players like ajax has done, the gap is currently too large due to the lack of lower dutch teams in the european competitions
Don't look only the premier League and the big leagues this favours the smaller League's like eradivisie, Turkish League , Greek League , Croatian League . We are getting 2 team's in the provisionals of the championsleague with this changes.
I actually quite like it (don't forget that it's the AVERAGE performance of a nation's clubs that counts). For example, if Club Brugge won the Champions League then Anderlecht wouldn't have to beat the champions of Europe just to qualify. In England we often root against our domestic rivals, but in some countries people would like to see a team from their league do well... this simply reinforces that!
@@Bregott07 It is deserved. The PL has way more competition that other leagues but only 4 spots. I think the top 6 should get it. But of course, that would ruin the tension and why the PL is so entertaining.
it's to foster competition and revenue (mostly revenue), so the additional slots don't belong to any country and are won based on, with heavy quotes here, "merit". There's also a sense of collective performance as a league so every competing club should manifest a winning mentality.
I don't fully favor this, because there are still many holes and imbalances here and still very vulnerable to match fixing (this is actually worse because fixing can be done on a more systemic scale)
Punish Super League teams by spreading the money to more clubs😂Ceferin wants to take their money and allow them to be knocked out of the CL by clubs in their own league. Thats why FAs are proud of this change
There's 55 Champions in Europe and out of the 32 teams in Group stages, 12 finished 2nd-4th in Spain, Germany, England and Italy... UEFA ruined this competition.
They want to add more lower level matches but big games like semis to be made into one-legged fixtures. The whole point of UCL are those high-stakes matches against big team, not boring league matches against teams you already play domestically or minnows.
For the sake of argument, I think the qualification format puts more emphasis on performance that's consistent rather than previous style where you could just win 2 or 3 matches and not be at the mercy of a draw
@@lonestarr1490 but two legs give you that adrenaline rush when a comeback happens 1st leg is hyped and 2nd leg is even more hyped due to a close 1st leg
Semis into one-legged fixtures will never happen, they would be insane if they do that. It's just one of those ideas that appear and gets quickly forgotten, like Wenger wanting to make goals bigger.
Every change UEFA and FIFA take always involves expanding to more teams. This is the exact opposite of what needs to be done. The Champions League should be reserved for CHAMPIONS. Adding teams who finish 5th is a joke. This only serves to reduce the quality of the matches and add unnecessary filler to an already packed calendar. It also takes away from the quality of UEFA Cup aka Europa League, which has been seen as irrelevant and worthless for years now. In the end, this only serves the interest of big clubs who have larger squads and will face even easier opposition. They’ve expanded the Euros to more teams and the World Cup too. Why not just do away with qualifying entirely and invite the whole world to participate, since that’s what these suits really want. More market, more money. They have killed football.
Don't mix the Euros and the World Cup into the same argument because national competitions are completely different. For national tournaments, no nation is automatically given entry (with the exception for the host of the world cup). All teams go through qualifiers with a relatively fair distribution, shown by how small nations like Iceland and Trinidad manage to squeezed in a spot in the past. Increasing the participants in these competitions only makes it even more fair. This is completely different from club competitions where favors are given to big players and profits drives most of the motives.
@@kmlau1986 It’s not a comparison. I’m simply pointing out that every time UEFA and FIFA make “reforms” it’s always the same story: expansion, expansion, expansion. They cry about fans losing interest and about matches which don’t attract viewers, and then do the very thing that makes for boring matches and disillusioned fans. In the end, expansion is only beneficial for revenue and marketing, and in the case of FIFA it’s good for garnering more votes and favours. Just ask Sepp Blatter and Jack Warner.
I don't like these changes, but to say they killed football is overdramatic. We still have amazing players, teams and games. Like this historic PL season. And Real Madrid's games in this UCL were amazing, specially the 4-3 loss to City.
@@matheus5230 Ok, now imagine those special matches occurring every two weeks. They won’t be special anymore. UEFA panicked because of the potential Super League (which was also a terrible idea) so they went out and made their own. They mistakenly believe that because fans love it when big clubs clash on the European stage, the solution to waning fan interest is to manufacture more big club clashes. Not only is this not the solution, but it will make these matches less special. And by expanding the tournament to more teams, they’ve further decreased the quality and uniqueness of the champions league, not to mention piling on more workload for the players.
@@JP-vj7fp Super League won't happen, and I'm against the Super League too. The Champions League already is full of bad matches in the group stage, it's the KO stage when people truly started caring a lot about all the games. Also, Tifo Football's video is incorrect when it comes to the historical coeficient. UEFA actually already scrapped that idea because of the huge backlash. Also, football is more popular than ever, and attracts more ratings in all platformers as ever. The sport is huge.
Get used to seeing the likes of Madrid, Bayern, PSG, Juventus, etc. in quarters/semis going forward. No way with this new format will you see teams like Ajax, Villareal, Spurs etc. reach far in the competition. This is essentially a proxy for European Super League.
Madrid, Bayern, and Juventus (kek) have almost 30 CL finals together. No clue why you put PSG in there lol. Ajax decided just like Liga NOS to be a seller club instead of competing at the highest level. Long gone are the days of Porto, Ajax, and Monaco reaching finals when two leagues are a one club competition and the two most prominent leagues have two massive teams.
actually in a way this format can favour the underdogs, because there are more spots for small teams ,also qualifying to the last 8 wont be as easy to some clubs like in the current format where most of the group winners are settled
After various explainers from various sources, i've still yet to see anyone explain how they decide your opponents in the league phase. I find this important, because a Swiss model - where you only play a portion of all the clubs in the league - will always be inherently unfair. You could theoretically and up with a big club only having to face the 8 lowest ranked teams, while a small team who overachieved in their domestic league gets shafted with 8 games against the likes of Bayern, Real, Liverpool and City. Facing the big teams might be good for their ticket sales, but they'll have no chance whatsoever of causing an upset and progressing further into the tournament. Meanwhile the big club in this scenario gets an easy walk to the knock-outs.
The best I've been able to find (somewhere, I forget) is that the fixture list will be weighted by club or league coefficients so each team has a roughly spread-out variety of opponents of varying 'strengths', so a big team will end up playing a couple of Barcas or Liverpools as well as a couple of, say, mid-tier Shakhtars, and a couple of Sheriffs - and conversely the smaller teams would face at least some teams more on their level too. That should in theory make it more like the kind of mix of fixtures you get from seedings in the current group format, but I'm not entirely convinced there won't be some interesting problems thrown up by that somehow.
In Csgo esports where the swiss model is used for most of the group stages it’s determined by seeding where the highest seed plays the lowest in the first round the second highest the second lowest and so on , so there would have to be some kind of club ranking for it
@@mirsad986 which means that the best team plays the worst and the struggling middle teams eliminate each other. Why not just wave the top teams through and send everyone else into the El if that's the case?
Its embarrasing the competition is called the champions league when league winning teams need to play qualifying games and the so called 'big leagues' get 3, 4, or 5 places automatically.
It's not that complicated, even the best team in small leagues would get absolutely battered by a mid table premier league team. The Champions league is for the best of the best, being the best of a league of all bad teams doesn't say anything lol
@@ChaseRiver2 nope because there are chances of many clubs progressing to later stages.of the competition not winning. And with the same logic let's make the super league so we can see more games between the top clubs after all there is no way that a club from a minor league is going to win with your way if thinking right?
@@ChaseRiver2 Champions League should be for Champions. Whether this champion wins or loses in it is a whole another story. All champions should get a chance to participate in the CHAMPIONS League. Simple as that
@@ChaseRiver2 I don’t care if an English mid table team can beat a champion from Ukraine. Because a English mid table team is not an ENGLISH CHAMPION. Like you said “champions league is the best of the best” but an English mid table team is NOT the best in the premier league, am I wrong?
@@ChaseRiver2 Do you know why a mid table PL team would beat a champion of a smaller league? Because UEFA basically killed central and eastern european clubs since the 90s. Back in the day you had clubs like Red Star Belgrade and Steaua Bucharest that would and did demolish any english club in their way. Back when clubs from all over the continent could compete financially. If the Champions League included actual champions, that would mean more revenue for those clubs who got it stolen from them by UEFA and we would have an even playing field again
This is still a bad change for the little man. More knockout = upset results have more meaning. More league based games = upset results have less meaning. Norwich beat man city a couple years ago and got relegated while city won the league. Big clubs don't get away with bad performances in a knockout format.

It’s also a philosophical question. Do you want a knockout competition that literally any team could win and be considered ‘European champions’, or should the winner be a team that can genuinely considered the best team in Europe that season. I think the cream will rise more often than not.
@@AgastyaBahl The format you are passionately defending allows for 24 teams to advance after 8 games. This adds a bunch more meaningless matches before the knockouts. With only 2 spots advancing from 4 each group, every game mattered.

Hey, I've just came up with a great idea for a new rule that I'll submit to EUFA right away : if you play in premier league, you play the champions league, it doesn't matter if you were just promoted 😡
Last thing we need is more teams from the big national league. They got plenty of spots already. What they should do is divide out spots geographically. Say Scandinavia gets one spot. The mediterranean countries gets two, baltic countries gets X amount and so on. And the champions from those countries can play each other for them. You would get some great games between neighboring countries and cover all of Europe in the process.
You would not get great Games you would see the big clubs absolutely destroy the other Scandinavian clubs you mentioned. And if you want to watch Scandinavian teams play each other then go watch the Qualifier’s dude they already play each other
Having 4 clubs from one league has already created an impressive concentration of wealth and CL winners in 2 countries, Spain and England. Now imagine what's going to happen when this goes to 5 (because if It's based on the previous season's coefficient, then guess who is going to benefit from the 2 additional spots... certainly not Moldova and Cyprus). There's already 16/17 spots from 32 going to Eng, Ger, Ita and Spa and UEFA goes: let's increase that even further but using a procedure that pretends to give everybody else a chance 🤦
Same thing happened to Copa Libertadores, down here in South America. It used to be only the first 2 of each country. Now it is ridiculous, Brazil gets 8, sometimes 9 spots. And now the Libertadores became just a second Brazilian cup.
Do you realize there is something called qualifiers ? And even in those qualifiers clubs are still getting smacked 10-0😂. I would hate to watch Barca play vs the champion of Moldova in the group stage and smack them25-0

The difference in quality between the 4 semi finalists in EL/ECL wasn't huge but 50% of both tournament's semi final teams had dropped down from the above competition. To be knocked out of the europa group stages in 3rd and win the conference to get the same reward as the winners of the competition you got knocked out of would be awful, even for Uefa mafia standards

Just another step towards the death of football, its like every year it gets worse somehow. UEFA wants to get richer and the domestic leagues and cups will suffer because of it. I really feel like quitting football these days. If the Super League was relaunched as a meritocratic alternative to UEFA; I think most fans would support it. European football seemed to be great around 2008 in terms of fixtures, salaries and how everything worked. It just gets more and more ridiculous every year.
I think before you start adding any teams to the list, every champion team should have a spot first ( maybe 1-6 or 1-7 champions) hence the "champions league". Then the rest can follow. should be a no brainer I think.
The change of the 2 extra tickets is BS. The top 4 leagues have 4 teams in the Champions League, which gives enormous amounts of bonus points. So it will always be 2 of the top four leagues that get the extra tickets (The Netherlands are an anomaly this year). I would rather have had historical clubs, that way teams like Ajax, one of the Portugese top 3, Red Bull Salzburg, Shachtar Donetsk or Dinamo Kiev, or if they are really lucky Slavia Prague or the Rangers would have had a chance. this method is BS, it will always be clubs from the top 4. They already have 4, why should they have more. I rather watch the champion of the Czech Republic then the number 5 of the UK in the Champions league.
I agree with you, except with the historical clause. It only helps a team by blocking the chances of all the other teams in that league. Why should teams like Ajax be helped to get into the CL, get revenue, buy players with that money and become stronger every year? It destroys competition in the Netherlands. With that money you can have Ajax throw the money away and still have so much more that they can dominate their league, even if PSV, Feyenoord, Alkmaar, etc. is perfectly run. "I rather watch the champion of the Czech Republic then the number 5 of the UK in the Champions league." Yes. More spots should go for more leagues, not to the top 4. The concentration of the CL spots to only a couple of leagues and the enormous revenue that goes with them has killed the diversity, the unpredictability and the excitement that the competition had when it way champions only for every league.
@@andrew7taylor I am Dutch, and it is not possible to dominate the Dutch League, not for 1 team. The opposition is too weak the top 3 teams can all win from all the other teams. Lets compare Germany and the Netherlands (they have the same number of teams). Bayern got champion again, easily, with only 76 points. That would have made them 3rd in our League, Ajax and PSV Both ended up in the low 80's. Most of the time the League will be decided at the end. The gap between the top teams and the rest is considerable tho, Leicester scenario's are almost impossible here. That is the negative point. But Ajax and PSV on top of the food chain because of good policy, they don't just waste shitloads of money like PSG
If for the calculation the total points earned is divided by the number of clubs competing, how is it that having more teams gives bonus points like you say?
@@jonathanbutler4124 4 out of 7 in the CL is over half of your clubs in a high bonus compition. Most clubs have 1 out of 5 or 0 out of 4. Then the average amount of bonus points per clubs is a lot lower. Why do You think there is such a big gap between Portugal and France in 5 and 6 and Italy and Germany in 3 and 4?
Remember when Juventus president Agnelli came up with this system and called it as ''his dream'', only to leave Champions League weeks later and form the Super League?
Classic English Arrogance expecting the 5th spot to be certain for the Prem and the other leagues competing for the second additional spot. Doesn't quite look like it rn.
I do like the idea of the Swiss model since I think the current group stages model often screws over some teams randomly by placing them in a group of death with no chance of getting out and favours others with an easy group, it also gives teams who would have been knocked out previously (17th - 24th) a chance to make a major upset to qualify for the RD 16. The more knockout games the better. And on that point, making the Semi Finals 1 leg and not played in any home grounds is absurd. You are robbing home supports of the best atmosphere in the game just so it can be played in some city that paid a tonne of money where only business executives who where gifted the tickets by sponsors can go to. Really hope that doesn't happen.
Please explain to me how does the swiss format work. I mean in normal group stage on team was playing 6 matches(home and away) against 3 teams. How does it become 8 matches in swiss format or are they just adding another team in each group but then they need to make 6 news entrees and not 4.
Groups of Death are the part of the fun. The atmosphere would never be like that without groups of death. Tournaments are for entertainment and fun, there is no need to make a fully fair. Just do it to a reasonable amount. Luck must be a factor. Also, some teams do better in this slightly random environment, like Mourinho's teams. You'd rob them if you made it fully fair.
@@02deee24 Swiss format is result-based seeding. All teams play 8 matches. In the 2nd round, teams that are 1-0 play each others and teams that are 0-1 play eachother. In the 3rd round, teams that are 2-0 play eachother, 1-1 play eachother and 0-2 play eachother and so on. The first round will probably be seeded. So as the rounds progress the top teams will be playing eachother and the bottom teams will be playing eachother. There is not really any room for upsets as that would just be 1 out of the 8 games. Teams have to win almost all their games to reach top 8 in a 36 team swiss league. I don't know whether they will allow ties and how that would work, I expect each game to have ET + penalties to decide a winner?
major upsets will be super difficult. Teams will need at least 5 wins to have a chance at reaching top 8. 6 wins and above is guaranteed. That is very hard to achieve for smaller teams.
would be way more exciting to add the “CHAMPIONS” from more leagues, that’s the whole appeal of the CL. Who wants more domestic ties that we already see every year

I still think the same format as we have today but with: - 48 teams *Champions League* - 48 teams *Europa League* - 32 teams *Conference League* *Would be WAAAAAAAY better* Just a maximum of 2 more matches per season for only the half of participants (those advancing pass group stage). ----------------------------------------- 4 more guaranted matches at the first phase are also a burden or 4 more matches per season to every participating team.
The league (Swiss) system will only favour the teams from the strongest leagues. Part of the magic of the groups stages is that you may get "wildcards" beating one of the strongest teams and managing to finish second, thus qualifying for the last 16. In a league format, those "wildcards"/underdogs will be competing against all the strongest teams in the table, making it almost impossible to make it through. Also, if it were to be a "pure" Champions League, the solution would be fairly simple: make it a competition between all the champions from all the leagues in UEFA, in the style of the European Cup, with qualifying groups and a 1 month event with the top 24 or 32 teams. I know this would be nearly impossible to do in one season, but then it would truly be the Champions League.
They figured out that everyone hated the idea of a new super league. So they just changed the format of the existing and well-loved champions league instead.

Correct me if I'm wrong but will there still be qualification such that clubs from anywhere in Europe could theoretically qualify? It would keep the dream alive, however unlikely, that small leagues like here in Ireland could see a team qualify to the Champions League someday. Even if it happens once in 50 years, it's the hope that it's possible that's exciting and I'm sure other small countries whether it be Estonia, Montenegro or Malta would feel the same.
Depends on scoreline. Teams that have the same number of wins play eachother, so I think meeting the same team twice will be possible although UEFA might try their best to avoid that.
i might of misunderstood but this just feels like what happens in american sports, it’s crazy how money can just change years and years of history and change something that’s barely been changed since its birth
Not fussed not watched a single cl game all season , not watched a live premier league game either . VAR ruined the game so now i watch the semi pros and these for me are proper players they can take a tackle an not roll around on the floor . Hate the modern game ruined it
I always believed six games in the group stage were few and just one game could possibly ruin your club's European campaign. If I were Ceferin I would've just changed the groups from 4 to 8 teams and added another round in the knockout. No more spots from the top5 leagues than now in order to improve the diversity of nations playing the UCL and raise competitiveness. Imagine a country like Holland or Portugal getting 4 spots in the long term getting that juicy European money, how great it would be for the fans
Fully expect this mess to result that before 2030 it will return to 32 team, 8 groups of 4 model but hey it would be terribly unfair for the big leagues to return to "just" having 4 spots so it will end up with the top 5 leagues with 6x3 plus 5x2 spots leaving four to the previous CL and EL winners (and ALSO would be unfair to not allow the big leagues an extra spot if one of their teams already qualified by finishing the league in the top third) and maybe a playoff between the champions of leagues ranked 6th-9th to find out the last two... but you know, wouldn't it just be more competitive and BETTER for those teams if they just played in the Europa League? Also, for stability, let's define who are the "top 5 leagues", it would be very distressing for the competition if Portugal or the Netherlands started dominating the Europa League as french teams floundered and suddenly got themselves ahead of a country that has less major European cup wins than them and PSG I mean french teams were locked out of the CL.
The play-off round to get into the knockout stage is also a big disadvantage to those teams, what is the point? If it already is a smaller team, that don't have the same squad depth as the bigger teams, they will more likely suffer from fatigue and not make it very far anyways...
2:09 In the PL, if both the Europa League winners and the UCL winners finish outside of the top 4, then the fourth placed team will not qualify for the UCL. So there can be a maximum of 6 teams in the UCL from the PL.
One thing I dont like is that the extra spot still be giving to the top 4 league in Europe. Why cant it be a club from other leagues like Eredivise, or Liga NOS, or maybe Turkey League? Or giving the spot to club from Croatia, or other Slavic country. At this point they just want to compete with Perez proposition for the Super League and I see no difference.
would be cool if a league uses this to their advantage. for example, sheriff tiraspol being the only team from their league and making it out of their group could mean their league gets another spot because the points would not be divided if there is only 1 team of that country competing :D I could see a team like salzburg or malmö possibly do this
the whole point of these changes by UEFA and FIFA is to increase games, thus making money for their pockets. Its as simple as that. This system just sounds more complicated with all the coefficients, swiss model and rankings
In theory of the top 8 sides to qualify from the league stages, 7 of them could be from Premier League or La Liga🤨. Although this is unlikely, it won't really be "champions" league. Surely it would have been better to give extra spaces to champions of smaller foreign leagues.
Between 1992 and 2009, the UEFA Champions League was a tournament with fair participation, the change in the qualifying system in the 2009-10 season caused football to end slowly in Europe.
The Champions League has lost all meaning when you have 2nd, 3rd and 4th place teams competing. The competition should be only exclusive to the winners of the of the domestic league winners.
While it is less bad than the proposal with 10 games and two wildcards I still hate it. The league phase will have more big games but that only means that they are less special and that relegation to the Europa League is scrapped devalues that competition. But now big clubs are guaranteed not only Champions League football but knock out rounds in the UCL as well, so that they do not have to fear a Barcelona situation, which in turn makes the league phase less interesting and I thought improving the group stage was the main goal…
It would have been better if they just put the winners of the league around the world into the Champions League. I mean it is the 'CHAMPIONS' league after all. Rather than inserting a 5th or 6th placed team
I agree with the idea of expanding the “champions” league. I have my own idea: 32 SLOTS spread across 32 EUROPEAN countries. Only 1 slot in each country. So, only league winners get to qualify, hence only “CHAMPIONS” gets to qualify. Certain countries don’t even get 1 slot. The amount of money JUST to qualify can benefit them. So, league winners get a UCL slot. 2nd place teams get a Europa slot and 3rd place teams get conference league. Every nation has their own “fa cup” style tournament. So the winners of FA cup can receive a UCL slot. So that means The champions league can expand from 32 to 64 teams.
This is the most brainless and unsustainable thing I’ve ever heard, nobody will watch the winners of Cyprus play against champions of north Macedonia, even the people of both countries wouldn’t watch that 😂
I understand these suggestions, problem is the viewerships will go down... Very few people will be interested in seeing teams they hardly heard of just for the sake of the competition... This thing is one big popularity contest...
There was a similar rule back in the day. The winner of the league would qualify for the champions league while the top 2-4 would qualify for the UEFA Cup and the winner of the cup would qualify for the UEFA cup winner's cup. And all games would be knockout starting from the round of 32 with 1 leg. That means if you lose you lose. That is why Maradona never won the champions league and only won one UEFA Cup
If it s called the champions league, why would you give out spots for the fifth place finishes in the big leagues instead of the first places of the other lower leagues. I mean why would the lower leagues like romania or greece or places like that invest money into fotball if they cant even get a 1% chance of playing in the champions league, Fifa and Uefa are only welcoming the revenue from the higher leagues.
The implementation of the "Swiss model" will be key. Typically the chess format decides a team's next opponents after each set of games, but TV rules modern football and UEFA tournaments so in the Champions League all group-stage fixtures will be known at the start of the season. Exactly how are the opponents chosen? By UEFA ranking points at start of season probably - not current performance.
Whenever someone cries about expansion it's because they're from one of the top 4 league countries. I see full stadiums in Europa League and Europa Conference for top clubs from the countries that didn't make it to the Champions. What I hate is that it's always the top 4 countries that get more slots. We need clubs from smaller leagues so they can keep improving.
I get all that, but what about the 35th team and 36th team, how are they decided if as normal they are top of the domestic league then whi get those spots?
it’s based on europa competition performance and nor league postiton if england does the best an all an europa they get a 5th sport if italy does second spot they get that 36 spot an europa it’s pretty damn stupid
Add 1 spot for Europa league Champion. Also make it fair, no qualification privileges for clubs from top leagues. if UEFA really wants to make it fair and equal, this simple system actually works best lol, and it also means less non-domestic games (which top coaches like Klopp have been voicing their concerns for years).

Tbh after seeing this video the changes do seem quite good. The only thing I would say is the cap where at most 5 teams per nation in the ucl should stay.
5 is already 25% of a 20 team league, that's insane. It should be 3 + 1 (Europa League winner) at most imo for the best ranked leagues, and give some of this european football to the rest of Europe.
UCL is too top heavy. Remember when the top three leagues were limited to two teams in UCL, one team in the Cup-winners Cup and four in Liga Europa? (Well, there used be limits.) My qualification would be winning your domestic league or domestic cup, winning the previous year's UCL, Liga Europa or Conference League or being lucky being in one of the three top leagues' runner-up. Since every country should have two representatives, Liechtenstein's cup runner-up would also qualify. The minnows should be able to generate money, so my UCL first phase (Sept. to Nov.) would be league play with four-team groups. Each winner and runner-up advancing to the second phase while the third and fourth placed teams enter the Liga Europa's second phase. The second phase (Feb./Mar. to May) is the traditional home and away knockout rounds. The introduction of group play has diluted UCL. Madrid's run in the knockouts is what UCL should be about. The occasional minnow tripping the giant is good for the sport. Giving chances to the smaller clubs would strengthen the game not watching the big clubs dominate. 😔
Its just the super league that the big clubs wanted but with a different name uefa were scared of the super league so they changed the champions league format to suit the big clubs
Dont agree with the 2 places for the last seasons best two performing nations. These spots should be made available to national champions that dont currently qualify automatically, it is actually called the champions league. How many champions actually compete each season considering all the 2nd 3rd and 4th places teams that have direct access
That is exactly what it is designed to do yes, the master mind behind this, Agnelli from Juventus even said he didnt think Atalanta had Any Business in the CL and a club like Roma should have been in IT instead, even tho Atalanta got there by Winning their games and Roma didnt

Does 1:25 imply that all 4 of the extra slots will go to nations with best collective performance? Or is it just 2 teams, and the other 2 would be decided by the qualifiers? Because awarding 4 to nations with best collective performance sounds excessive, especially since there's not even 1/4 of the teams from qualifiers in the group stage with current format
The main thing I'm worried about is smaller leagues like belgian, swiss, and austrian leagues not being able to get into the competition, becuase formerly a few nations like that would still get in. Does anyone know if they still get in and also will this format apply to the Europa league and Conference league aswell?
I wonder what this means for the Europa and Conference Leagues. Will they also be reformatted? Or will they remain the same? A question for the Tifo roud table, possibly
The old European Cup was better as there were less matches and it was a knock-out, giving smaller clubs more chance of causing an upset and progressing to the later stages. A final between clubs like Malmo and Notyingham Forest is impossible now. It is all about money and the same old massive clubs in the semi-finals every year. That is why I no longer watch it.
The more they change, the less serious this competition becomes. It’s the CHAMPIONS league, why are they trying to add more spots???
It's a hardly any are champions league
it's to foster competition and revenue (mostly revenue), so the additional slots don't belong to any country and are won based on, with heavy quotes here, "merit". There's also a sense of collective performance as a league so every competing club should manifest a winning mentality.
I don't fully favor this, because there are still many holes and imbalances here and still very vulnerable to match fixing (this is actually worse because fixing can be done on a more systemic scale)

Not only is this not the solution, but it will make these matches less special. actually in a way this format can favour the underdogs, because there are more spots for small teams ,also qualifying to the last 8 wont be as easy to some clubs like in the current format where most of the group winners are settled
In Csgo esports where the swiss model is used for most of the group stages it’s determined by seeding where the highest seed plays the lowest in the first round the second highest the second lowest and so on , so there would have to be some kind of club ranking for it
Clubs will be drawn the same way they are drawn in the group stage. They're not idiots to let that happen.

Back when clubs from all over the continent could compete financially.
Soon people will lose interest and stop spending money on it. Then they will realise their mistake.
Just you wait for the 32-team euros and the 48-team world cup being hosted every two years in China or Saudi Arabia 👍
Eh? UEFA is a not-for-profit members organisation. It doesn't "get richer". It's not a company.

I kinda hate this change the most.
I think before you start adding any teams to the list, every champion team should have a spot first ( maybe 1-6 or 1-7 champions) hence the "champions league". Then the rest can follow. should be a no brainer I think.
Isn't this already the case?
Right now the champions of 9 different leagues get automatic qualification: The top 5 leagues + portugal, netherlands, belgium, ukraine
@@illuminatie2526 + 4 additionnal spots contested by the champions from the bottom 44 leagues, so we have 13 champions per year....
The winner of lithuanias league should not have the right to Play champions league group stage
The concentration of the CL spots to only a couple of leagues and the enormous revenue that goes with them has killed the diversity, the unpredictability and the excitement that the competition had when it way champions only for every league.
netherlands also havw a top 3. its not just ajax.
Remember when Juventus president Agnelli came up with this system and called it as ''his dream'', only to leave Champions League weeks later and form the Super League?
Agnelli, is the Devil himself.
The Champions League was such a simple format but it worked! The new version is just complete nonsense
Classic English Arrogance expecting the 5th spot to be certain for the Prem and the other leagues competing for the second additional spot. Doesn't quite look like it rn.
Lol 🤣 let's be honest, with the new league format, England will have one of these spots nearly every year now!
Swiss format is you play 8-teams 8 times, no 2 legs
Gotta leave my meeting at work, because Tifo posted a video and Tifo is top priority
would be way more exciting to add the “CHAMPIONS” from more leagues, that’s the whole appeal of the CL. Who wants more domestic ties that we already see every year

Missing the champions league format where on champions from the native countrys did qualify. Like Rosenborg, Olympiacos, glory days etc.
The increase in injury is gonna be insane
Can we please bring back the European cup for only the winners of their respective leagues
So basically, the super league?
They figured out that everyone hated the idea of a new super league. So they just changed the format of the existing and well-loved champions league instead.
nope
Except you have to earn your spot
Ummm no?
How is this any different from the super league fiasco? LOL
The format for the matches have similarities. But honestly the biggest and most important difference is that the super league is exclusively fixed to a handful of top clubs, while the new ucl still allows for other clubs through qualifications
@@jinjunliu2401 Yeah, every team still has to qualify for the champions league the year after. If liverpool finishes 7th for example they will not be getting champions league/super league football just because they have more money. That is what the problem with the super league was, exclusivity

Can you please make a video comparing the Ballon D’Or to the Fifa player of the year/FIFA’s best award? For years I’ve always felt that the Best has been more accurate in their selections and should be held to a higher regard than the ballon D’Or some examples would be…
1996 - R9 selected as Best but loses ballon D’Or to Matthias Sammer
2001 - Luis Figo selected as Best but loses ballon D’Or to Owen
2000- Zidane is selected as Best but loses ballon D’Or to Luis Figo
2020/2021- Lewa selected Best both years but Messi wins in 2021 and awards canceled in 2020
2004- Ronaldinho selected Best but loses ballon D’Or to Shevchenko
2003- Zidane selected Best but loses ballon D’Or to Nedved
Don't forget the Dubai thing they've been giving ronaldo and mbappe 🤣🤣🤣
I'm a United fan but Henry should have won the ballon D'or not Nedved. They looked down on the premier League teams back then.
This still doesnt answer the question whether the teams in the group stage will play 4 different opponents or 8 differenet opponents?
I think it's 4 different opponents home and away
I believe 8
8 different opponents, according to the set list.
Depends on scoreline. Teams that have the same number of wins play eachother, so I think meeting the same team twice will be possible although UEFA might try their best to avoid that.

Did you, did you try to effect an accent when you were quoting Kevin Miles then give up a couple of lines in?
All In the name of money
Money will ruin the fun of football in the future
I may have missed it, but where do the other two new spots go? If I understood correctly, you only explained two of the four.
I think that’s changed with the expansion from 32 to 36
Yeah, in 2011-12 when chelsea won the ucl being 6th, they got a spot in next year's ucl instead of spurs who had to play the EL next year
@2:15 “unlikely….” yet Italy will be having 7-8 teams next year in champions league
That coefficient spot is definitely designed to get man u a place
Manu may get a spot because of Manc, liverpool works. Hahaha
Whats the point of having a 36 team league if you will not even play with 1/8 of the teams?
I mean might as well, just make it... a group stage?
One thing I dont like is that the extra spot still be giving to the top 4 league in Europe. Why cant it be a club from other leagues like Eredivise, or Liga NOS, or maybe Turkey League? Or giving the spot to club from Croatia, or other Slavic country.
At this point they just want to compete with Perez proposition for the Super League and I see no difference.
you have to earn those points its given to positions not countries
would be cool if a league uses this to their advantage. for example, sheriff tiraspol being the only team from their league and making it out of their group could mean their league gets another spot because the points would not be divided if there is only 1 team of that country competing :D
I could see a team like salzburg or malmö possibly do this
It would be devided by 4 cuz other euro cups are also in count ( other moldavian clubs would make that immposible )
I love Iain but Joe’s voice is a source of comfort on these videos
the whole point of these changes by UEFA and FIFA is to increase games, thus making money for their pockets.
The competition should be only exclusive to the winners of the of the domestic league winners.
true and now 5th place
While it is less bad than the proposal with 10 games and two wildcards I still hate it.
The league phase will have more big games but that only means that they are less special and that relegation to the Europa League is scrapped devalues that competition. But now big clubs are guaranteed not only Champions League football but knock out rounds in the UCL as well, so that they do not have to fear a Barcelona situation, which in turn makes the league phase less interesting and I thought improving the group stage was the main goal…
Well, this aged like fine milk.
Serie A frist to receive 5 spots, and second goes to Germany.
Take that, Prem. :)
Yea haha i like how he was so sure
It would have been better if they just put the winners of the league around the world into the Champions League. I mean it is the 'CHAMPIONS' league after all. Rather than inserting a 5th or 6th placed team
I agree with the idea of expanding the “champions” league. I have my own idea:
32 SLOTS spread across 32 EUROPEAN countries.
This is the most brainless and unsustainable thing I’ve ever heard, nobody will watch the winners of Cyprus play against champions of north Macedonia, even the people of both countries wouldn’t watch that 😂
nascar should hire you to restructure their championship system
I understand these suggestions, problem is the viewerships will go down... Very few people will be interested in seeing teams they hardly heard of just for the sake of the competition... This thing is one big popularity contest...
There was a similar rule back in the day. The winner of the league would qualify for the champions league while the top 2-4 would qualify for the UEFA Cup and the winner of the cup would qualify for the UEFA cup winner's cup. And all games would be knockout starting from the round of 32 with 1 leg. That means if you lose you lose. That is why Maradona never won the champions league and only won one UEFA Cup
That's a lotta teams son
The champion's league needs more exclusion, not inclusion. That's what made it special to begin with.
Champions League should be only for League Champions like in 60s
Add 1 spot for Europa league Champion. Also make it fair, no qualification privileges for clubs from top leagues.
if UEFA really wants to make it fair and equal, this simple system actually works best lol, and it also means less non-domestic games (which top coaches like Klopp have been voicing their concerns for years).
