  • One if the rarer vintage Star Wars ships is the A-Wing fighter, released under the droids line. It was released again in the 90's under the POTF2 era from Hasbro. Both version are made from the same moulds, and have the same issues. Normally the landing gear mechanism fails. In this video I show you how to fix that.

    I was at my local hobby store over the weekend. There was a kid in there maybe about 15-16 years old. He asked the employee if plastic nippers "like the kind TOY POLLOI uses" we're in stock. All of a sudden we had an impromptu discussion about your channel. CHEERS!!!

    I bought an old Droids one for a lot of bucks on Ebay and it looks amazing, but unfortunately the landing gear does not work, like it should ... I never ever thought, that I would find such a video. But nothing is unpossible. :-) Thanks a lot, master! This is so cool! But nevertheless I have to be careful. You will always get only one chance to repair it, without destroying more ... :-o I would love to have such great talent like you man.

    I had the exact same issue with my POTF A-Wing! I fixed it with superglue, but as you estimated, it broke again. Thank you for sharing this video and showing us a better technique to fix it. I might work with resin the next time.
    Hasbro need to give us an all new A-Wing for TVC.
    Best regards from Germany!

    I'm happy you did this video because on my droids version the motor doesn't work

      @toypolloi  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The motor will more than likely start if you turn it over by hand a fee times with power going through it. The brushes inside just get dirty.

    I have one of these, and always wondered if it would be possible to use the battery compartment to hold batteries to power some LED lighting in the engines - they already come with transparent pieces in them, so it might have been an option in the past.

    A thought for the future, possibly a fiberglass or carbon spar instead of a screw as reinforcement? Saves you the trouble of lining it up like you did with the screw, and where you have this kind of uneven break you can get a perfectly keyed alignment, and if all is well, the repair is nearly invisible.

    I suppose the last time that I was fixing a lot of toys like this was nearly 40 years ago and at that time I always had poly cement lying around from putting together Airfix and Matchbox kits. In more recent years I had to try and fix my kids toys and I found that super glue didn't adhere that well to the plastic. As far as using an old screw to replace to a broken part trick, I learned that one when I was still a kid. Most of my Action Men were the blue pants or late 70s ones. The knee joint broke on one of them and after an unsatisfactory repair with electrical tape I "borrowed" from the old man I decided to split the thigh and screw an a small woodscrew into the lower knee joint. I then stuck the thigh back together with modeling glue.

  • @JohnSmith-de9yh

    Love the channel and watched this video when it first came out - have been holding on for the vintage conversion follow-up. Any plans to release this at all? I have two projects standing by: A 1999 A-wing into which I'd like to fit a spare X-wing motor plus the removal of the Hasbro 'weathered' paint and a 1999 POTF2 Tatooine Skiff, which I'd like to remove the weathered paint and re-pint the rails and deck grey (or duplicate the parts in grey). Lots of collectors focus on the core Star Wars vehicles and exclude these two POTF1 and Droids vehicles due to their insane prices, while the later POTF2 models from the same mould are cheap and easy to find. So having a way to complete the movie canon vehicle collection without breaking the bank would be great!

  • @lostonwallace1396
    @lostonwallace1396 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nicely done, Dave! I always love your fixes. Have you ever thought about trying to improve the existing mechanisms in toys such as this one by first repairing the part, but then recasting that part using a stronger plastic than it originally had? Or even in a stronger material like metal? I know that would be much more involved, but one day, I'd love to see you go the extra mile to do something of this nature as an experiment. :) Those vintage DROIDS A Wing Fighters go for over $1000 MIB in the states, so very few collectors are likely to have them, unless they had them as a kid, and managed to keep them all of these years. I love your videos, and I'm very glad to get a new one! Please let me know if you still want to get a commission from me in the near-future. Take care!

    I’m thinking about doing that. Is there a good way you have got to remove paint, cos it would be hard to submerge the whole thing in Oven Cleaner?

      just guessing here, and I don't have anything to try it out on, but could you drill a small hole then put in a screw and pull it out that way?

  • @Warrior8bit

    I want to strip the paint and redeco like the vintage version too. I might beat you too it! ;) Have you thought of an easy way to strip the paint off it? I know you have showed oven cleaner. But it’s gonna be hard to submerge it?

  • @richardferguson6665

    Been awhile since a comment has been made, but I picked on of these up at a toy show today and it had this exact problem. It had even broken in the exact same spot! I also have a peg broken off one of the rear landing gear struts so I will try to repair that or just get another one. Thanks for you always informative videos - they have helped me through all of my restorations of my vintage vehicles and playsets.
    Did you ever get a video ("Part 2") of the A-wing conversion to install a motor and possibly getting the paint removed and redone?

    You can tell from the surface that it failed by a combination of old plastic brittle fracture and torsion. You might find that if the superglue fails in the future, the arm will twist again. But if you're careful, unlike a kid would be, it should be fine.

  • @TheNightBadger
    @TheNightBadger 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice fix! That landing gear is pointlessly complex though!

  • @conorduggan6682
    @conorduggan6682 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Just out of curiosity why do you favour using super glue rather than modeling cement which can give a stronger bond on plastics? Most modelers would only use super glue on photo etched parts, while bonding the plastic parts together with the equivalent of Humbrol or Tamiya poly cement.

    • @georgeyankovic
      @georgeyankovic 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Its because the point of his videos is how to cheaply with every day household items repair vintage toys. That is why he always uses Lego bricks to make / sculpt the parts he needs for repair and not the 3D printer. The same goes for super glue :)

      @@toypolloi usually MLC-3 might have a broken canopy, CAP 3 also or even worst missing (make replacement for these would be a challenge). Also the speeder bike is usally found without the back flaps (all these parts might be found on ebay but the prices are outrageous...). Also Cap 3 and the energizer have these suck plugs that most they break easy after all these years.

  • @matthewpahnke2613
    @matthewpahnke2613 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you have a fix for the Falcon? My kid plays with my PotF2 one and the landing gear always collapse under the weight of the ship. I remember how frustrating that was for me as a kid.
    I've tried bending the tabs outward with boiling water, but it inevitably collapses under its own weight after a day or two.
    My PotF2 A-Wing still works. I'll rewatch this the day it gives us grief!

    • @matthewpahnke2613
      @matthewpahnke2613 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Found a fix. Jammed a bunch of aluminum foil up into the hollow of the landing gear so that the upper parts of the tabs are pushed out and they only retract when pinching the tabs as was the design's intention. You can't see the foil.
      If that creates enough stress to break them down the road, I'll spring for the OTC 2004 landing gear. I see they finally addressed this design flaw!
      Now to figure out why the front landing gear is wobbly and easily collapsible when extended and saggy when retracted....
