My original ‘82 Y-wing is still is great condition despite tons of play, but I never had a droid for it. Always (for some reason) always wished an R5-D4 but when allowance is all you have as a kid, you have to be picky. The droid never made the cut. I never knew til I was an adult that the astrometric figures fit but were super loose. So, now begins the journey of finding aftermarket, fan-made stuff for that purpose and I’m so glad you covered this aspect in the vid! 🙂
The smile on your face at the end of the restoration made my day, boss. So glad she's in your collection. Watching your restoration, I was reminded just how persnickety those landing gear were, when I restored mine. It took 3 tries for me but, once it's properly keyed, it works perfectly. Loved the editing and camera angle changes you did on this one, too. To anyone considering this ship, you really should get yourselves a Y-Wing. It's the logical choice.🖖
Good video. My Y-Wing is one of the prides of my collection. Took forever to source original parts. I recently ran across another one that is missing all sorts of pieces. Like you I will be using reproduction parts for that one.
I love it! Y-wings are supposed to be rugged, love the look the new parts give the fighter. Fantastic and realistic video on this: it took me about 5 tries to get those gear teeth to line up AND remember to get the other parts installed when putting the cover on. I kept a Y wing shell I found at a flea market for more than 25 years and did not restore it until I found this amazing community. Seeing you restore this makes me very happy!
In this excellent Analog Toys video, Tony shows exactly how patience and determination are the best tools for any restoration project. Well, maybe patience, determination and a bottle of beer! :)
I love it!!! I had one when I was a kid but it was bare bones and the front landing gear also was broken. My mom bought it at a garage sale back then, probably 1988 or 89. It was in the same state as the one in this video so it was really cool to see this restoration. Its almost like watching my childhood toy be fixed the way it should have been. Thank you for this!
Great use of the camera angles. Excellent video mate. This is one Star Wars vehicle I will try to add to the collection some day. Great gift Michael Shaffer. 🖖
The Y-Wing seems to be the more sought after ship in the Star Wars universe. I would put it right up there with the Millennium Falcon. Your restoration was incredible to watch. There is just something about that laser cannon sound that puts a smile on your face when you hear it. You have a true piece of art now👍
You and @Retroblasting are my favs, great channels, this is older content, but I'm slowly going through your back catalog and just thumbs upping everything as I watch them. Great work!
Great video! As a Joe collector, and a responsible family man, I was stuck trying to justify spending big bucks on a complete Mauler. I went the 3D print route too. It allowed me to assemble a really nice example I can enjoy now, instead of spending years finding original parts priced in my budget range. I'll slowly replace the 3D parts, but for right now, I couldn't be happier with what I've got.
I always felt the Y-Wing was the bastard child of the rebel airforce, and as I never owned one I am impressed by the size and its features. For me, it is better than the X-Wing and your restoration has provided the confidence to tackle one in the future! Thanks Analog Toys!
Another great video! It's amazing how much 3-D printing has brought to the hobby, both in terms of replacement parts, as in this video, but also in terms of new characters and accessories.
Hi, I bought a basic Y-Wing shell off FB a few months ago and followed your instructions. Got the whole thing restored with a sticker sheet and 3-D printed parts from ebay. Looks great now. Thanks for your help.
Apart from being engrossing I think this video will inspire others to try their hands at restoration especially since identical decals and printed parts are easily available. Great video Tony
She's a beauty! I always liked the Y-Wing. She reminds me of the F-111 Aarvark, the first aircraft I was trained on as a specialist. A heavy but fast two seater that packs a very heavy punch.
That’s great Tony. Thanks for sharing, I believe 3D printing is the future of completing these old holy grail toys that would otherwise be incomplete. I had the feeling if getting a holy grail piece myself at the first toy show I’ve been at for a while. I know the feeling you must have had doing this video. Cheers!
That toy is in better condition than mine was after a year of play back in '84! The red droid is a good match for Mr. Spock, Vulcan ships are usually reddish in color; I guess Vulcans like the color red. Congrats on having completed your grail toy Star Wars ship!
Nice one Tony, thanks for bringing another toy back from the brink. Also kudos for leaving in your frustrations during assembly, these really help to see what 'can' go wrong. Bought a bashed up 'Saga' edition Y-Wing and the front leg does not come down with the rear, so you've enticed me to open her up and check the linkage. 3d parts here we come! 🖖
@@AnalogToys just an update Tony...the Saga 1999 edition is internally different to the Vintage collection - no connection to front landing gear and the battery compartment is sealed shut - so no play value there, just static with a better paint job! Plus the separation between the top and bottom hulls requires removal of two plastic screw covers which don't come off easy. Thought I'd add this in case anyone thinks they are the same.
My best pal Dom, his older brothers loved Star Wars & they'd passed them on to him. One of the ships they had was the B-Wing which I remember buying later on in the MicroMachine Action Fleet form. Very distinctive looking Rebel Fighter Ship.
I got and still have The Kenner Y-Wing Fighter and I have the Mego Mr. Spock mini figure from the 1980s and for the life of me I never think of having Spock flying the Y-Wing! Brilliant!

I appreciate that but you must also understand that these videos do not perform very well in views. I will make more videos like this when I have the right project to film but I won't be turning into Toy Polloi any time soon.
Nice vid, Tony. I used Toy Polloi's fix using K'nex rods for the engines. People may get mad because it isn't all original, but it made it displayable. Just couldn't justify paying $30 Canadian for each rod.
I am writing the comment prior to seeing the video. I am anxious to see what you do and I must say I have been enamored by the Y-Wing since I first saw it in May 1977. I have many versions, several Lego ones, the Galoob Action Fleet, the MPC model and a few more. Never had this as I was "a little too old" but a Y-Wing is a Y-Wing.....
Tony, that was awesome. You brought her back to life! I would proudly display her front shelf. And the Red R5 is awesome! Pretty sure it's R5-D8. And Spock, that's logical!
Nothing wrong with reproduction replacement parts. The people that get worked up about it are idiots, ruining toy collecting and fandom in general. Anyway, it's a lovely restoration. Looks great. If Stan Solo comes out with a proper Y-Wing pilot figure (the Y-Wing's got their own, distinct pilot uniforms in RotJ), that would be a great way to display the toy. Great job, Tony.
I see both points. No different than buying a restored car. As long as you're happy or as long as you're transparent if you sell it that it has repro. I prefer all original but you pay for that. I detest repro guns or accessories on figs - thats shady. Don't mind as much for the parts on ships but I've never had a problem finding original parts.
Mr Spock in a Y-Wing!? Highly Illogical!!! Lol! It looks the business Tony. The Y-Wing has always been my favourite Star Wars fighter and its certainly a lot less common than the X-Wings & TIEs. Very enjoyable restoration!
I think maybe the mechanism would work a lot easier with a bit of lithium grease on the cogs, as you said at the beginning the mechanism look a lot like that you would find in record and tape decks and they were full of grease. Great content thanks for sharing. I thought this was gonna be one of Dave's uploads until I noticed the analogue toys logo.
Just getting into a Y-wing resto now. Bugger-all parts in Australia. I'm looking at 3D printed repro parts to get it done. I'm doing a red and a yellow Y-wing using shells from ebay.
