    That's so cool! Looks great. Just started playing with 3d printing and wondered about an amp rack, so I Google'd for "3d printed amp rack" and yours was the first result. I've seen a lot of your videos before so I should've known you'd have explored this. And two years ago, no less.

    I'd print custom speaker covers, speaker mount plates, amp shrouds, wire clamps/combs, subwoofer style mount plates, custom switch panels, custom wire management racks, tweeter pods with 180 degree adjustable aiming built in, just a huge number of things. you could embed your logo in prints instead of having to use a router and then do a layered paint on them. Also much easier to mass reproduce when it comes to adding your personal styled touch to something.

    Man, I've doing car audio for over 27 years. And nothing much impresses me anymore. But, this is really cool. I must say I'm impressed. I could never work that machine. But, I sure as hell wish I could.

    I have a couple 3D printers and right now I'm running them to make some internal bracing mounts for an acoustic guitar I'm building for a client. The mounts are being printed from carbon fiber infused polycarbonate and they will hold 6mm and 8mm carbon fiber rods to the back and soundboard in place of traditional spruce braces. The idea is to be stronger and lighter with fewer and smaller direct contact points for less interference with the resonance of the instrument. I also use my printers to make various router templates for guitar building and am soon going to be using them to make full-size representations of guitars I've designed so I can make molds of them and start producing the instruments themselves in carbon fiber. Oh and I also use Fusion 360 for all my design work. It's a fantastic program with a lot of resources to help get a new user up and running. I knew nothing about CAD last year and have made great advancements through trial and error and some basic tutorials.

    Mark, let’s say you want a more polished look. 3D printing is very good and precise but what is recommended for a silky smooth and polished look?
    The amp rack turned out pretty well. Interesting concept to use red and white in contrast with a black amp.

  • @Saddendude
    @Saddendude 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think its more useful building specialty parts. The Backframes of the amprack that holds the fan for example. Shops can easily pump those out in volume and sell it as an upgrade too a traditional amp rack design.

    I'm really impressed by the quality of this printer. Don't know anything about it, but my CubeX (12x12x12 printing area) was the ultimate back when I bought it. I prefer printing PLA vs ABS. In all honesty though I haven't used it in years, all my work is done now on the CNC. A CNC is virtually a 3D printer but instead of additive it's subtractive. The fact that you were able to print such long horizontal lines without supports is very impressive! I've made some pretty exciting things with the 3D printer it's just that it takes so bloody long and they DO mess up ESPECIALLY when using ABS. Some "aftermarket" software and hardware goes a long way with printers though. It'll be neat to see how often you use this going forward. ALSO very impressed with the support in these comments, I was expecting, "YOU FOOL WHO HAS A 3D PRINTER?" "YOU ARE DUMB, TOO MUCH MONEY" "THAT IS GAY!!" not a bad little community here!

  • @darkwinter6028
    @darkwinter6028 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    ABS can be a bit tricky to work with (warping, bed adhesion issues... oh, and it stinks when it gets hot, too; so remember to have plenty of ventilation where the printer is). I’ve had great results with PETG on my Monoprice Maker Select (basically a rebadged WanHao i3). I did upgrade to an all-metal hot end, though. The PETG I’m using is from eSun, and it lays down well, doesn’t warp, and doesn’t stink, either (I still run the vent fan on the enclosure I built for it though... breathing hot plastic fumes can’t be good for you even if it doesn’t smell bad). 😎

    Unfortunately... I do not have a 3D printer. YET! I will have one some day. But I do have 2 CNC routers I built and they work very well for these kinds of projects. Great video and cool project. One nice thing about CNC routers over 3D printers is while I have to buy sheet material to cut from. Even my home built CNC router would knock this rack out in about 30-45 minutes depending on the material being cut and assuming I was able to nest everything into one panel and just push start.

    You are a great wealth of resources and have a great way of teaching. I have got NO clue as to do the 3D printing thing.
    I could see the benefits of being able to have that do work while I'm doing something else...but I don't have the need at this moment and see that time wise...it could be done in different tools and cost less time and money... That being said....
    I can see the lure of the 3D printed hype as a potential bandwagon of flaunting what you have kind of systems.
    Well done in your presentation!

    Awesome seeing the use of new technology pushing boundaries. As an idea Mark it would be interesting to see the weight differences between this amp rack and an identical mdf version. Also another plus for the 3D printer would be making templates to use on the router for mass produced/common parts.

    In addition, if you expect to sell high volumes of a part, once it's printed and test fitted and all is good, you can send the finished design to a 3D print fab in china and order them in bulk at a low cost pr part. It's not feasible to mass produce anything on a 3D printer at home, but it's great for prototyping and then order it up from China. :)

    I don't know that I like the 3D printer vs using wood or metal. I question how strong that abs plastic is vs wood or metal. That rack could have been made with various woods from soft to hard and various metals from steel to aluminum. I do understand and like being able to just print a part over and over again but 28 hrs print time is kinda cra-zazzie! How much did the abs material cost to make this rack? Good video though. Thank you for sharing. Love your walkthroughs! Mad skillz!

My amps have a white gooey grease under all the mosfet amp parts. The paste transfers heat from the mofset part to the amps exterior case, thus allowing cooling. I am curious if you think inthe heat of summer if the cooling paste will seep donhill and come out from under the mofset parts?
