If you're familiar with classic studio gear you'll have heard of or perhaps even used the Fairchild 660 studio compressor. They fetch sizeable prices on today's used market if you can actually find one. From Rockett's site: "The original Six Sixty Compressor was designed by Rein Narma, who had worked with Les Paul to build a recording mixer to use with Les Paul's Ampex 8-track. Les Paul asked Narma if he would build a compressor/limiter. Sherman Fairchild, who was friends with Les Paul, learned of the compressor and licensed Narma's compressor design, hiring Narma to be chief engineer at Fairchild Recording Equipment Corporation. The first 10 Fairchild 660’s were built by Narma himself. The first unit was sold to Rudy Van Gelder who used it to cut lacquer masters for Blue Note Recordsand Vox Records. The second unit went to Olmsted Sound Studios in New York City and the third 660 built went to Mary Ford and Les Paul."
The Airchild Six Sixty is J.Rockett's homage to the Fairchild masterpiece. It features four fundamental controls that let the user run it as a 2:1 compressor right up to a 30:1 limiter. It injects a warmth and richness to your tone reminiscent of the original and can be used as a boost right through to a brickwall compressor - without the divisive 'bloom'. I'll say on the record that the Airchild Six Sixty is easily one of the top five compressors I've had the pleasure to demo, but that's not surprising coming from this company.

my first requirement for compression is a mix knob. it's from a sound engineers perspective the most important thing to get a natural sounding tone on anything. then a nice sounding compressor to add in. this compressor sounds so sweet and natural. easy controls to achieve a great mix for your guitar.
lovely Brett
fixed attack, but sounds great, and adjustable release from threshold.
Possibly one of the best studio compressor in a pedal format. Great demo, Brett!
Wow. I'm no expert on compression but this is so addictive. It just brings everything to life. Presence to the nth degree!.
Hey Brett, what are your top 5 compressor pedals? Great demo ❤
A great video with a very interesting sound effect with a hint of the good old rock days (and not only). Greetings Pavel CZ.👍👍👍
Your play space is looking sharp with them blue walls...kick ass playing man, an that's one serious looking telecaster to👍
Interesting that they left out the Input and Release controls. Nice they added the tilt tone control however.
I really find compressor pedal demos pretty useless when the on/off signal isn’t level matched and it just gets louder when the pedal is engaged. On the surface the pedal does sound nice though.
What a nice looking guitar...EXCELLENT.
Thank you Brett!
Great playing Brett.
Great video as ever mate. Where is the Airchild in your signal chain, e.g. when you do the Big Muffin + Hiwatt example?
Eeeeeyup! This one is a must
Anyone know what time constant settings are used in the pedal? Sounds like 1 from the video, but would like to know for sure.
If this is top 3-5, please tell what are a few other absolute greats?
I'd guess the Cali 76 would be up there. The Union Lab pedal always sounds great in demos to me. I'd love to hear other people's input on their favorites!
@@sawdustcrypto3987 oh yeah, I so want a Union Lab. They sound incredible. Lastly, I forgot to mention the Boss CS3. It’s by far one of the most fun to play.
@@sawdustcrypto3987 I bought the Airchild and it me be my very favorite. I also love the old Keeley C4 from about 2006.
How does it sound on bass?
Decent, still prefer the original Diamond Bass Comp Jr (3 knob). The Fairchild is noisy; the Diamond is practically dead silent. Punch and snap...Diamond. Fairchild may have better low end extension at lower comp levels due to blend control.
Im between this, the mira and the cory wong compression pedal from wampler...ugh so many choices...or thr UA Max@@revelation12ministries51
Sometimes I'm wondering if, in my ultimate edge of breakup pedal quest, a very good compressor isn't finaly the best way to go?
The more I try OD pedals, the less I like them. With that constant mid hump most of them have, which I just can't stand in the long run.
@@rodolpheponthus2948 I mean if you want a tasteful compressor with a nice EQ I gotta hand it to the air child. I personally just bought myself a Mira from walrus audio. I think overall it's the compressor I'm into using. It's more flexible but if you live strictly vintage edge in a compressor, can't deny the air child has a wonderful tuning and bite. I don't currently own any OD pedals, but I think if you get a nice distortion or fuzz you can get that OD sound anyway.
