  • 1990s and early 2000's Land Rovers and Rovers are at risk of being scrapped as their computers are too old for OBD diagnostic tools to work, meaning cars could be scrapped for minor problems.
    There is a solution now in the shape of the PSCAN diagnostic tool, Ive got one and put together a tool box ready to trouble shoot my Freelander or Rovers

    Diagnostic scanners are a god send.
    The 90s and naughties were a difficult time working on EFI cars as there was no off the shelf scanner systems.
    Hence why you keep hearing the classic line... Older cars are easier to work on... But they are not..i have worked on both
    With a good ecu scanner honestly this makes working on these modern vehicles a lot easier than the old school carb cars.
    Troubleshooting is a breeze.
    VW have a great diagnostic tool called VCDS, never needed to go into a mechanic as this tool has told me everything from
    Intermittent wiring issues
    Sensor failures
    Etc etc
    This will make your life so much easier

      Unless like myself an IT ignoramus, older vehicles can be diagnosed by experiance and trial and error. It may take an whole weekend or longer, with a rapidly filling swear jar, to solve but a great feeling of satisfaction when done. This is the main reason I wouldn't buy a vehicle manufactured since the end of the '80's but would lease a new one (EV), not my problem if it goes wrong.

    That pscan looks like an excellent piece of kit. I've got a 1994 rover 216 SLI and one of the fobs stopped working over a decade ago. Phoned several auto electricians who were unaware that any rovers were still on the road *rolls eyes*. Even found a mechanic who worked for Rover. He couldn't understand why it wasn't in the scrap yard.
    Hopefully with this I can program a spare key (need to find a working fob with chip first).
    Great video. Thanks so much for your help :).

    • @GSimpsonOAM
      @GSimpsonOAM 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depended of the regulations of the country where they were sold.
      USA made it a requirement in 1996 but in New Zealand for example,it was not compulsory until 2006
      As a result some companies such as GM deliberately made their cars non compliant (allegedly) so that you had to go to the dealer.
      GM exported cars to the USA and Europe before 2006 and these cars would have had to be OBD2 compliant. It is an interesting fact that one can get an ODB2 cable in NZ to fit a GM car and it just required swapping a couple of wires to make it work.

    Oh, I wish you could run BMW DIS on a RPi!!! Great video Matt, very informative. Have you considered a sealed lead-acid accumulator or even a 12V NiMH pack to run the RPi from independently of the car battery? I know everybody likes Li-ion batteries these days but to me, they're just cylinders filled with fire (see Big Clive videos)... or, in your professional capacity do you use anything like Anton Bauer/PAG/V-Lok batteries? Those would need a pre-regulator though to power the RPi.

    I wonder if the cause of the spontaneous combustion of a newish Range Rover on the owners drive will ever be discovered, both Land Rover and the insurance company say it is the others job to investigate the cause. If ever diagnosed my money is on an electronic problem.
    Various Motorways and the Blackwall tunnel have been shut various times this past week due to car fires, they seem to be occurring more often of late. I wonder how many were electrical or electronic.

    I was very interested in buying pscan, went to the website only to be disappointed that it doesn't support Land Rover Discovery 2 petrol V8's. I am in Canada and was wondering if you know if the creator of Pscan is going to be adding Disco 2 V8's, I just bought a totaled disco without keys and I am trying to get it running before I break it up, so I can test the engine, and wouldn't mind a 2nd ignition and door lock as well but have to first get a key and fob working. Do you happen to have a email for Pscan, all the website has is a forum.

      If it had an inverter in it you could plug in the PSU, it has to be a specific 12v and the right amps to make it work and not break it!

    • @GoldenCroc
      @GoldenCroc 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@furiousdriving Hi. Having "too much" amps isnt an issue, so its only voltage you need to be concerned about since I dont think there is a pack these days that cant do 2 ampere (if I heard you correctly). May I suggest a small Li-fe-po or Li-po pack? One made for a small rc car/plane etc should do the trick nicely and wont break the bank and isnt very heavy.

    Your new gadget looks like a Windows device!
    Great that you can diagnose the Rover vehicles within your fleet. A shame you cannot programme keys.
    Also you can look at your engine specs before heading to an MOT in order to avoid a failure!

    A related issue for every car no matter what end of the market are faulty modules, late parents 25 year old 6 cylinder Jeep Grand Cherokee that has been maintained from new with money spent on keeping it reliable four years ago as it is a straight & rust free example but two faults has appeared concerning modules for the ABS & Airbags, this now renders it unroadworthy & will not pass a RWC/MOT.Common sense decision has been made, line drawn.Registration was due Friday & has been allowed to lapse, plates will be surrendered & have made enquiries with the wreckers yard.

      @@furiousdriving ok, power delivery power bank with a 12v device board (does the handshake for power delivery, don't know what to call it lol) then either use a buck converter from that for the 5v or have a second usb from a power bank. Means you'd only need one USBC style connection in theory, and could use your Mac charger on it too 😉
