Well, to be honest, you did what you set out to do with aplomb. You went out to buy a headlining, and you came home with a headlining. It's not your fault there was still a car attached to it.
Very loosely attached, judging by the video...
Is impossible not to buy a cheap, red, well optioned estate! You just can't let such opportunities to slip away, especially now that estates are a endangered species.
As the owner of a 159 ti sportwagon, I can only agree!
as an ex 159 SW Ti owner, me too!
I can confirm, I have a 1994 Volvo 960 estate and a Volvo V90. I didn't get the message about saving manuals though as both of mine are automatic.
@@SuperFIFTHGEAR is it a 90s V90, or a more recent model? The earlier ones are brilliant cars!
@@simonhodgetts6530 No, a 2017 V90 and a 1994 960. V90 is my everyday car, D5 Inscription Pro. None of that R Design nonsense ;)
There's a reason Mrs Furious is called Mrs Furious, and it's because you keep bringing things like this home…
I assumed it was an ironic name
Whats the name of where you got your tourer from
@@porscha901 it’s a private collection believe it or not!

Love that your channel focuses on affordable practical classics 😊
I used to have a 416 with Honda engine.always wanted bit more power but bloody good car, did 100,000 miles in it totally reliable.
Who ever took delivery of the 420gsi touring from new, must have been very proud driving it home and watching the neighbors window nets start twitching.
Fantastic, please give her as much tlc as you can, i love seeing rovers being saved. Pure magic !
The Tourer was such a good looking car, especially in red. Provided there is no serious rot underneath it has to be fully restored, professional repaint etc.
I enjoyed this episode, it was exciting, 'will he, won't he make it home?' but I'm glad that you did in the end. I liked the under bonnet footage too, it made us feel like we were going through it right there with you. A sweet engine makes everything else worth while. Far more practical than the coupe and will look a treat once you've fixed the paint...great opportunity to experiment with the spray gun and compressor! Wrap? Wash your mouth out!
Unless you 'fess up, I suspect that Mrs. Furious will suspect that you have a mistress based on your suspect secretive manner and she'd suspect right, as the prime suspect is called madam Rover 420Gsi. 😍
What a beaut. I fully support the saving of old Rovers. Had two 25's myself (1st and 2nd cars), while my friends had German hatches.
In terms of paint... I'm feeling a HubNut home paint job coming on. 🤞
Lets hope not.
@@terrortorn That is for sure. Domestic emulsion put over stucco. Still, a very lovely car
gsis are getting rare. i remember when they first came out, the escort mk6 was launched at around 1995. around the time of the last year of the rs2000, all the boy racers opted for the rs2000 didn't bother insuring them ragged them into the ground and a lot of them found there way to the scrap yard or torched in fields. the sensible ones picked the rover gsi/gti as a lot of the younger generation snubbed them back in the day you usually heared the phrases "its a old mans car" or "something my grandad would drive" so the rovers were a lot better looked after as they were driven by a lot of the middle aged/older generation. just rust issues on them you had to keep on top of. vinyl wrap it, half the cost of paint and less prep needed and you can pick any colour pattern or design you want probably be in and done in one day. any damage you can just get the damage panel rewrapped for peanuts.
Great to see you saving another old Rover, (still driving my 75 cdti). I would snap his hand off for that 25 gti, it looks a peach. Good luck with the resto.
Very excited to see where this one goes! Good purchase and thank you for making purchases so our wife don’t get mad at us!
Great video and good to see this car being given another chance. I am sure you will do well by it!
When you mentioned putting the wheels from the coupe on it, and adding the roof rack, I got way more excited about this being added to the fleet.
It's very nice! I do like a mid sized station wagon (tourer). My nephew has a Corolla that had peeling lacquer on the roof and I had a go at re-spraying new lacquer on it using spray cans and a handle attachment, which works brilliantly. It turns the can into a spray gun (sort of). I carefully rubbed down the edges and cleaned it thoroughly and resprayed the whole roof in 2 - 3 coats. It looks excellent and has lasted several years of Sydney sun and complete neglect. You can do it! It's not that difficult. I learned some painting techniques from various TH-cam channels. Good on you for saving this lovely car. ✔
I think Matt is brave enough to give it a go, weather permitting in the summer. Fairplay to you on your project.
@@terryatkinson899 Thank you. At least he has the barn to work in. I had to work under a big car port on a couple of still mornings with the temp below 20 deg C. Not so easy in Sydney in summer! These things are possible, you just have to plan and think it out.
I've always liked these rovers and i reckon they were very well built. To think you got it running and done 70 miles is well worth the save! Well done🏆🏆🏅🏅👍😳
I always coveted a 420 wagon way back when I was a teen driving my 414sli. I love the style and practicality of smaller estates.
Not daft to save it if mechanically/structurally sound and the interior does look great - paint can wait but personally, I wouldn't try to 'rat look' it.
I have a gsi estate in the same colour but luckily for me my paintwork is immaculate. If you re paint the car I promise you Matt you will love it and it will definitely be worth the cost.
I love these rovers. I used to own a green 216gsi. It's was so nice to drive. Always wanted a coupe, but they are just so rare now. Plus I'm old and really loving the touring version. I live in Kent as well, so hopefully I get to spot it on the road some time.
I'd have a hard time buying only one rover in that place, in my eyes you exercised incredible restraint. Definitely don't go rat look though, the car deserves better.
Glad to see I am not the only one who does things like this......and then has to go home and act like a kid in a confessional! Some things are just too good to say no to though.....and if it is a car you have always admired or wanted and it was a good price, then why not? The worst that can happen is that the foot comes down and something has to go in order to keep it. Some would choose the wife as the thing to go, but if yours is anything like mine (and I am sure she is because of your fleet), then she's a keeper....but that estate is a beauty and could be a stunner with not a lot of major work. Engine sounds good, box looks smooth despite the low clutch take, no diff whine and that interior is something that belies its milage to a large degree - and the sunroof still works! Maybe pads and rotors, but likely just very old unbalanced / out of round tyres and a slightly sticky calliper that has sorted itself. You'll be right about the battery not taking a charge that caused the engine to cut out. Have had that a couple of times when the engine revs got too low on a car with electronics that had sat for a long time. ECUs and EFI units like to have constant power for some weird reason....
With only a week or so before the MOT, if it were my baby, I'd be replacing things like wiper blades and addressing anything concerning to get it passed. Then I'd do the maintenance stuff - oils, fluids and such - and then have a go at the rot and the paint. Here's a thought - I've been wanting to try an experiment with one of my own vehicles with the peeling clear coat and find out if one can just clear coat over the coloured paint that has been exposed where the clear has peeled, Obviously a light sand with some 2000 grit and maybe some 600 / 1200 on the join where the peeling stops, but is it possible? I know you've got the added fun of the rot in the top of the front window - and that will obviously need more work - but why not try it on a door......or the bonnet that has been more or less completely exposed? Might save a few quid into the bargain! Worth a crack, you reckon?
All the best, Matt.....and take heart that you live in a country that has oil refineries, houses a major player in the fuel industry and you aren't living in some tin-pot little country at the bottom of the globe that imports refined fuel and oil from wherever they can find it like the one I am in.
Love for the estate! Large engine, manual gearbox always a winner. I had dreams of getting one of these while at university in the early 2000s. Always thought they looked cool and would happily take a bike in the back. In fact these were definitely my favourite, above 3dr, 5dr and coupé. I currently drive a 2005 e90 BMW 330i manual touring and had almost forgotten about these, so thank you for saving it. Still keeping some Rover love going though, with a K Series Caterham :). I'd probably keep that Rover looking fairly standard. It would benefit from paint restoration but I know it will be costly. Good luck!
Oh dude, this is a really cool car, never made to Finland these things, so having learned about the coupe previously, seeing this wagon is so cool. Oh yeah the color it has is lovely, i wouldnt go for a matte on the car.
Good call. I had a 1997 220SDi which was a cracking little diesel, I would like to give that 25 GTi a new home too. Cracking video.
I've always loved the 400 tourers. I always said that if I had to buy an estate, it would be one of them. This, and its 4 and 5 door bretheren, are what I instantly think of when someone says Rover because they were absolutely everywhere when I was a kid.
Head liners are not too much of an issue, iv just had mine done on my 05 1.8 zs, removed, re covered re installed £120. Looks ace
Great purchase! I remember driving these when they were new!
Definitely worth saving....for good content have a go at a diy paint job....it worked for Jack and his Bismerc!
Front end could do with dropping a tad....coil overs and coupe wheels and she'll be looking very sharp 😎
Two weeks ago I filled up with V Power near the Eurotunnel and I think it was about £1.79 per ltr at the time. It was about 10p cheeper here in Yorkshire but has since risen to the sane level. I expect it could be as much as 1.90 now in some forecourts.
Of course I fully approve of you purchasing another R8. I've always preferred the 200's myself but I remember my Grandad looking to replace his second R8 200 series with a 400 tourer. He ended up getting a better deal on the then newly released HHR 416 SLi Auto in a beautiful bright metallic blue.
Another great addition to the fleet! Can't wait to see more videos about it. You've made me fall in love with these Rovers. Please don't forget about the Tomcat.
Tomcat is still a favourite, its got some upgrades booked for soon as well
Really great Video enjoyed it allot I own a Rover 620si Very low miles i just love it Rover Made some Fantastic Cars
Over the Years We should Be Proud of Are Engineering Heritage...Keep Up the Great Work Mr Furious
Please give that beautiful Rover it's forever home Matt. This is the best decision I've had the pleasure of seeing you make.
Toy Story reimagined as Rover Story.
Imagine what all these get up to when it goes dark. Probably go on ebay and type in 'head gasket'
Great project Matt. Would love to see this brought back to a nice condition. It sounds lovely, smooth engine. You have a very patient and understanding wife...lol.
Best of luck with it.
I’ve been following the rover content recently, and as a younger person with no experience with these cars I’ve slowly peaked my interest with them. And working as a courier I’ve come accords two addresses I’ve delivered to with a hoarding amount of Rovers outside them in inverness of all places
I can remember back to when my Dad, said he would give up owning a car if the cost of petrol got to 50p per gallon!
I can see why you went for the Tourer 420GSi. As well as being rare, it is a beautifully proportioned car with a lovely interior. Once you refresh the paint, it will be a great car to drive and enjoy (I was so glad to hear the engine run smoothly).
Great collection caper Matt.
Done many of those "touch and go" collections myself over the years.
Looking back now over my 44 years of driving, I think...
"HOW...did I get away with THAT?!"
😁
Looks a great buy, that windscreen aperture looks a bit rotten at the top so Will need to come out. I had similar on a car years ago, it's where the screen had been replaced in the past and they'd nicked the paint cutting it out.
I think you should paint it back to original.
I don't think I could go to a place full of old Rovers and not try and come home with one I'd personally love an r8 3 door or a tourer they are such nice cars to drive. Can't wait to see this one finished. Keep up the great work. 👍
Never mind a practical car show at the NEC I could spend a day just walking round all those Rovers🤩
Have always liked the tourers project Nigel would be jealous he has a few R8 at the moment, you could tap him up to see if he has a wiper stalk.👍👍
Whoop whoop!! What a cracking car! I can’t wait to see the transformation on this. I think you should make it as nice as you can. Get the mechanicals refreshed and then tackle the bodywork! Great video as always Matt! 🍾🥂
Amazing that rover graveyard loved the 25gti think you’ll be changing to rover driving 😂😂
Back when these were new a mate’s dad had one, in a lovely metallic dark green. Can’t remember which engine it had or even if it was petrol or diesel, but in the mid 90s it was a really rather nice car. Certainly seemed a cut above the equivalent Ford, Vauxhall, Peugeot, Nissan etc.
Doesn’t seem that long ago that Rovers were everywhere!
My step dad had a Rover 827 on a J plate in silver with grey leather used to love going to Whitby in that, through the moors it was brilliant
Always liked the shape of that model of 420 Touring. I hired one for a video shoot in North Wales back in 97/98 and it took all the gear and was really rather nice to drive.
If the clutch takes up right at the bottom of its pedal travel it's probably the clutch cable on its last legs. They are supposedly self adjusting and the spring mechanism gets really tired. I have spacered the cable at the clutch arm end as a temporary fix but a new adjustable cable is the fix.
thanks, I wondered if anyone had had similar
This is the sort of car that excites me. I hope it is somewhere around as good as you seem to think. Would be lovely to see another one saved and back on the road :)
I had a fire-engine red 218 SLD Turbo as a company car, probably my favourite car ever. Picked it up from company HQ with 73 miles on the clock, spent the next 3,000 miles religiously running it in ('cos I'm old fashioned like that).
I had loved R8's ever since the TV advert with Joe Cocker & Jennifer Warnes singing "Up Where We Belong" as a soundtrack, and used to joke with my wife and mum whenever we saw it on the telly "That's my next company car" laughing because they were seen as kinda exclusive and posh, and as if a nobody like me could get one of those!
So when I got the choice of this, an Astra or an Escort as a company car it was a total no-brainer. Mine was also exactly the colour of the one in the advert, which was cool. When I turned up at home with it, their faces were a picture.
It was classy and refined, smooth (for a diesel at that time), had real wood on the doors and dash and chrome kickplates with the Rover script on.
Kept it until it had 72,000 miles on it and they made me redundant.
Gutted at losing both job and car. Loved it so, both refined and fun (car, not so much job) The Peugeot diesel was unburstable and fast, the handling entertaining (if a bit tail-happy).
Four years later, it passed me going in the other direction as a minicab!
Still miss that car.
This is De ja Vu, for me. I used to make the folding parcel shelf for theses very cars . Moulded and assembled by a company called M.I.P ltd , who were based in Stourport on Severn , they also did the boot mouldings for earlier Longbridge Rovers , Range Rovers as well as Toyota cars. , and the dash for the later Rover 75 models. So your folding shelf as my monocle on it ! Hope it proves a good purchase, certainly an impulsive purchase but us car nuts do these things ! Mrs Furious has the patience of a saint
This is a very interesting, and equally cool looking car, coupled with the rarity value, I think you’ve made the right choice buying it, I would be doing exactly the same with a classic Škoda 120, 130, or maybe, the icing on my cake, a Rapid cabrio, so I can whole heartedly empathise with you😊.
Amazing! Absolutely loved my 420 tourer.. it was a right old rusty gem with nearly 200k on the clock
Nice one Matt, this could be a serious smart looking car, for a minute I thought James had sold you his.
Beautiful car Matt love the tourer my dad looked at one and had a 400 saloon as he wanted Tahiti blue! Look forward to seeing this one come back to life
Very nice car Matt, looked at these when new but couldn't persuade my head to buy one. The barn you have would be ideal for painting, or a vinyl wrap maybe.
Glad you’ve got a tourer! Really rare now. Looking forward to seeing you at the resto show!
I love these, pretty much all Rovers actually. An interesting place, though I can’t imagine being in a massive greenhouse does the paintwork or interiors much good. Hence the lacquer looking more like that on cars from Arizona? All of them look like they have wrecked paint. Bad news for leather and walnut veneer too 😩
I went to a salvage yard to get a headlamp washer jet for a Lexus a few months ago and came away with a Subaru Vivio. It's easily done!
glad its not just me!
I think the channel now has a proper replacement for Quinton. Although I would absolutely love another R8 project I'd say take your time with it and do up properly if other projects have priority
In 1995 I joined a firm that had a range of Rovers as company cars. I had a brand new 214, then a 416 sli with a grey leather interior. Both in that classic red.
Superb purchase Matt ! A 420 GSi tourer is definitely on my wish list. Having owned a 420SLi saloon and taken it all over northern Europe I can tell you that you have bought a fabulous touring car. Enjoy it. I look forward to seeing all the videos to come. Nice reg too.
With some fresh paint (that's one of the best colours!) and a wheel upgrade, that will be one smart tourer
Yes mate what a blast from the past I was part of the Tom 🐈 crew in the late 90s that's how I had my kids the rover had pulling power back in the max power days
Brilliant video, well done for saving it, it looked like a really good drive, keep it standard & get it mint, a rolling restoration as you say there are not many left, well done Mr Furious Driving👍
Used to have a tourer like that silver one. 416SLi, in white. Miss that car. Awesome find with that 420 though, I am jealous.
Love people with a passion for a single marque because up to a few years ago I couldn't drive past a FIAT for sale without buying it. I've got better since then mind but you're still ill Matt. A brilliant illness to have though. Good luck with the work it needs, lovely rare car and another Rover saved 👍👍
Oh, Matt! You are a better man than, Gunga Din. That is a lovely wee buzz bomb. Looks as solid as you could hope for, and seems run even better. I can't wait for the rest of the story
Great colour and the T series is an underrated engine. Interesting what you said about the FDH reg numbers as my 820 was N515FDH, also a T series engine. Great for towing with its low end torque.
I just showed the Coupe to my Daughter that needs paint @7.34 and she loves it. I would love to buy it.
Funny you should mention fuel prices, just before watching this video I went out to fill up my Peugeot Expert from almost empty - it cost £159.10, and that was the regular diesel from my local BP garage.
No it wasn't a stupid thing I love them lol. Nice one Matt 👍
You just love living on the edge don't you! Keep on plugging the hat sales to fund this new family member. Love the car by the way. Always fancied the Tourer. It's classy and understated.
I love the R8s, more than the bubbles. So many versions and all of them look nice. I like the 3 door most I think, but I'm sure you will get one in the future 😂
This car is in need of restoration. I have not seen one of these in tourer form for ages. Sell one of the others and put the money into this one. It will look great and its practical for its size.
Now I've watched the whole thing, get some Rover nightfire red paint and have a go yourself. Its not going to be any worse than how it is now!! Could look great again for a small layout if you prep it right and take your time! Plus it would be great to inspire others to do the same. Maybe more rovers would still be on the road if everyone did it!
Someone has to keep these on the road.
Well done Matt.
There are 1 or 2 hatchbacks there that I would love
2 videos in one day .. you're spoiling us sir .... you could always tell yourself you'll tidy the estate up & sell it for a profit
You’re a car guy. You love Rovers. You have a car channel. Win win win. Go for it but try not to get frustrated by the inevitable trials and tribulations this car will give you. 🇬🇧
Thats a very good looking car - its practical, comfortable and...... its a Rover 👍🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
This is why i love your channel, your ❤ for Rover cars. Take this all the way, mint it up, enjoy it.
If you paint it yourself, go with a matt paint to help with the even coats; a nice matt grey would be easy enough as opposed to something metallic. Great content as always
Hi Matt! I had a Rover 418GSD Tourer in Nightfire. It was gorgeous! Good luck with this one. They were(or are) a great range of cars..
would be cool to see you have a go at painting it yourself. Given how many cars you've had or have that need paint, it certainly wouldn't hurt to have a go. I'd really love a 420GSi, saloon or wagon, N/A or Turbo, I don't mind so seeing what you do with this would be fantastic
Cracking car, please don't rat it, would be a shame as it has the makings of a good car. Always liked the look of the tourer.
Congrats on the new addition!
At first look it seems quite solid, but needing of some TLC.
Would really love an R8, but in Europe they have literally all disappeared. Haven't seen one in flesh for at least 10 years.
that's why I love Furious driving you never know what matt's going to come home with next. Some people save cats and dogs matt's save cars🚗🚗
Great to see so many rovers being saved
Nice machine! Love those 8 series barges, we used to have a fully loaded V plate Sterling, it was a magnificent thing
Nice buy, Matt! I really like that era of Rover & used to own an M reg 214SEi in platinum metallic with the same style seats & interior as that tourer.
Great video and astute buy Matt , also a great rarity.I'd always predicted that the remaining well-preserved Allegros would become desirable and the Rovers are sure to follow. We have a mint low-milege Sierra Ghia estate which has proved utterly reliable , now used in semi-retirement and there is always a note through the door asking if it is for sale ? !.
Rover Heaven ....I miss my R8's had two last year a 216SLi and a 414SLi also had SD3 213S ....should never had sold them but at the time i needed to...Only got my 45 Connie now....need to get more. And see you at the NEC next weekend
Cool buy Matt.. sand it down smooth. Up to 1200 grit. And wrap it mate. It's a simple shape. No silly modern sharp edges etc.
Love that Tourer! Beautiful interior, looks like a nice place to be in.
Brilliant that wonderful site with all those splendid Rover's is obviously a dangerous place to visit for the wallet. Well bought Sir! I think you should sort the scabs and then have a bash at painting it yourself.
I’m definitely not jealous about this at all… I’ve always wanted a 400 tourer. Almost got a hold
of one last year, but alas I was too late.
Lovely car I had a couple of tourers, looking for one at the moment great collection, good luck with the car.
Lovely car , I owned several Rover 25,s lovely cars certainly restore it depending on cash flow.
Your a very cool under pressure driving back . 👍🏻😆
Forget about re spraying it, just lacquer what needs lacquered, just take it down to the closest edge and bob’s yer uncle. Niiiiiiiiiiice tourer
I think you did well . Look forward to seeing more. For safety I wouldn't go home, but as I write this you probably already have. Lol
