Mercedes Benz factory scan tool - Using the right scan tool for diagnosing any car

  • This video shows the difference between a "Generic" OBDII scan tool and a "Factory Dealer Level" scan tool.
    In almost all scenarios a "Generic" scan tool will not help diagnose anything, it will just display a fault code and leave you to fend for yourself.
    ONLY the dealer scan tool will provide you with guided tests in MOST cases. The GM TECHII scan tool is great except when you get a fault code you still need access to the GM dealer portal to find the guided test steps. I have worked in the Mercedes-Benz dealers for just about 15 years and that included Porsche, Audi, VW and also I dabbled with GM on a dealer level but I have always been a GM fan at heart.
    I can help with almost any make and model, I say that because in some cases the aftermarket information is not trustworthy and missing in most other cases. For instance I use sources like ALLDATA and IDENTIFIX for wiring and code lookup but for some reason European and Asian cars are lacking on the back end.
    But again the basis for this video is to show that if you say, have a transmission error, the check engine light is on, and there are no codes In the engine module except for maybe a P0720 or similar, you still need a better scan tool to access the transmission module for the exact code that is there. So it is always important to use the right tool for the job. Now if you are a technician you might be saying, "Lou, I can fix anything with a generic scan tool" I would agree but i'm sure your experience in the automotive field is more than 5 years. Where most of the people I assist have little to know automotive background or experience.
    So I hope this video helps explain a little bit more about why you need a certain scan tool.

    Dude, you described me! My ML320 started going into limp mode and I used one of the generic orange obd scanners, actually the little brother of the one in this vid, and got P0600 and P0720 codes. The general consensus on the forums led me to replace the conductor plate. Symptoms didn't change, which is when I started looking at scanners. I decided on the the Star Diagnostic System. I received it today and I plan on putting it to work tomorrow. Wish I had found this vid before doing a bunch of research on which scanner I needed - it would've saved me a lot of time. Blew my mind when you described exactly what I had done when I replaced the conductor plate!
    I also watched the other vid on how to use the Xentry system. Thanks for 2 excellent videos. Liked and subscribed.

    Thanks for taking the time to share your experience and know-how with us! Having assumed the role of spokesperson for your subscribers, I’d like to express our appreciation for your refreshingly sincere manner. On a personal note, I discovered Benz-Tech whist poking around for information on a recently acquired W221 S350, in anticipation of the inevitable future engine warning light I’m sure will show its face, hopefully later rather than sooner. Thanks again, I’m off to binge on your podcasts whilst I go check my sunroof drainage pipes, seals, spare Tyre pressure and so on. X

    Thanks mate. I'm trying to sort brake pedal issues with a w202 C280 instead of going ahead and replacing perfectly good components in the suspicion that these are buggered or wrong like we used to do. Seems simple, but dear me, ascertaining source issue for an ABS error light on an early system is like asking a GP if Neanderthals clipped their toenails.. things move quickly tech wise...people are ready to label what you are working with as old and unsupported.
    BTW your video is exactly what I was after. Yes you need to polish up but your intent and content is excellent and I want to support you in this.

    hands down one of the best videos ive seen. Completely data driven. no asumptions or guesswork. normally when researching any topic... i usually have to do hour to a few hours of searching to get the answers i need and the reasons why..... THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME I WATCHED A VIDEO AND GOT ALL THE INFORMATION NEEDED BACKED UP BY FACTS AND WITH SITE AND NAME INFORMATION AND PRICING.... cause all that ill post the link below stuff usually just gets you to some other nonsense... VERY WELL DONE, VERY WELL EXPLAINED. I THANK YOU AND NOW am confident and smarter because of your info. i now can saywith confidence why whch scanner is which and why and what it does and the price

    Wow!
    Thanks for this.
    At last, someone that knows what his talking about and genuinely wants to help people.
    With motor vehicles the way they are today being so complicated we the consumer are at the mercy of the mechanic and the company they work for.
    I'm old school, and drive a 1964 model car, l also have a late model Mercedes Benz 220C and only because l promised myself l would have one when l was 12 years old.
    Now l need a device to tell me when there is a problem, and what it is, then l need to learn how to use it.
    Now l know how mechanics suck money out of the customer's pockets.
    I'm going to sell the Benz and keep the old car, it's so simple to maintain and it never breaks down.
    My horse needs more maintenance than it dose.
    I'll stay in the past thanks, and with my four speed manual gear box and 308 V8 with timing gears, Holly, crow cam, extractors and regular oil and filter changes it will out last anything else on the road.
    And the value increases every year, what cost me $2,000 is now valued at $60,000.

      I'll take you on the offer to help. Bought a w211 e63. Trying to figure out best value on Star, different choices in Amazon, but don't know which I should look at. Or should I settle on a Launch. This is my dilemma.

    • @MasterTechLou
      @MasterTechLou  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@hankrizzo6830 honestly its a hard choice . The star is perfect except you cannot program or change coding on most newer cars without dealership online access .The launch can back door code. Meaning you can change coding without programming and I just helped a tech that changed a rear sam, and now had more warnings due to non installed items. He fished around in the coding section and found the settings ,This is not possible in the star.
      So its a tough call, for me I would say star, then if you need things coded or programmed send to dealer or buy both. again hard choice. I have both.

    Great video! I have an 05 Cl55 that I’m working on and I want to get a mb star setup for it. I’m working on the locks, soft close doors and everything that goes with that system, and the srs. Which one would you recommend from from the mbstar website?

    • @MasterTechLou
      @MasterTechLou  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks Shawn, all the mb star are pretty much the same it is just the package they are offered on.
      So my quick answer is get the latest and greatest. That will last you for years to come. As for your locks, your pse is most likely bad or you also have a leak in the system that caused it to go bad.
      Check fuse 62 under the back passenger seat. The PSE is in the upper left corner of the trunk behind the paneling. If you end up needing help hit me up at www.cartechconnect.com I can help you, There are fees but hey, the things I can show you and teach how to diagnose is worth it. I have been doing this for years, thousands of satisfied customers. Thanks, Lou

    Your video is more than fantastic. Like you I am a Mercedes guy and have two Mercedes and one more member of the family also has two Mercedes. I am a fanatic guy of the Diesel Mercedes. Actually I own two Mercedes Diesel: one SD 1982 and one E320 Bluetec. 2008. What call my attention to look for this kind of video is because I just bought a ThinScan S01 and want know better in how to use it. Recently I had a problem with my DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) and had it replaced but my engine light still ON and, like you said, the generic scanners show as "DPF restriction, as it was before replacement. Someone told me that I need to bring the car to a dealer to have the code cleared. Dealers will not do the code clean only, they want to replace the entire system and it cost more than $4K . I also have a fuel gauge problem but the generic scanners will not even find this issue. Expecting getting these issues resolved I bought the tool. Finding what is the issue I can do the job myself because I have a good knowledge in cars.
    Thanks for posting this very nice video.

    Thanks very much for the tutorial. I always wondered the difference and how much I can diagnose from my home garage with limited expenditure. I have a 2006 ML 500 and a 2011 E-350 4Matic and enjoy working on things that I can do without advanced computer tools (i.e., oil/filter, brakes, bulbs, cabin air and engine filters, tire rotations, etc.) Even performed a A/C blower motor replacement. Even if I can't make the diagnosis from my cheap scanner - your video gives me a great reference point on when to trust my skills or go to a professional.

    • @MasterTechLou
      @MasterTechLou  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey I appreciate that!
      The only difference between a professional and a do it yourself person is access to “how the system works”
      Other than that all you are doing is verifying what’s operational and whats not.

    Thank you for this great information ! I have a question , I have a 2022 sprinter van (it’s a revel)3.0 diesel I will be taking it to Alaska next summer and want a decent scanner to take with me just in case a problem happens,my main concern is the def system ,seems all manufactures have issues with def and emissions system on diesels setting off codes going into limp mode and so many starts left etc ,so what scanner would you recommend it will only be used on the sprinter van no other vehicle . thanks again for the great info!!!

    • @MasterTechLou
      @MasterTechLou  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Well thank you for the nice compliments., there is nothing you can do with a diesel. Only thing you can do is have a basic scanner on you, just to read codes. You cannot clear them or it will start the countdown to starts timer. But when you run out of starts it will let you idle. thats it., so theres really nothing that can help the diesel owners in my experience.

    @BalanBro2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Thanks for the great comparison. This really shows what you get for your money. While Xentry would be an amazing option, I don't think it would be suited for a home DIYer, especially if you maintain vehicles from multiple manufacturers.
    For a system like the Launch, how deep does it go? Can you actually do things like resetting transmission adaptations or even updating the software on various modules, or does that require Xentry level capability?

    • @MasterTechLou
      @MasterTechLou  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Autel is better for what youre askin but launch is the same software as matco . Launch or autel would be my preferred scanners. Especially since they do multiple cars.

      Benz-Tech Lou P. yeah, just to read out any error codes, write them down as you suggest and to reset them, check again after a test drive. Just to prevent that the garage will come up with repairs I haven’t asked for. Sometimes I want to read out cars of others, so that’s why I asked for a multibrand one. For now I think I will go for the CR Pro, unless you’ll tell me it won’t cover some features the MB II or V2.0 have.

    Great video, explaining the different levels of capability of each scanner. Obviously, price and features will dictate what DIYers will buy. The iCarsoft scanner is one that I am contemplating, but various reviews from actual purchasers seem to show one thing in common, and that is lack of sufficient support (no returned calls or emails from the manufacturer). And some have complained that their particular model of MB is not listed. Can you comment?
    Would also like to see you make a comparison among scanners costing between 100 and 150 dollars, if you would be so interested. Thanks.

      @MasterTechLou  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ted thanks for reaching out sir.
      I will tell you that a lot of scanners do show the models its the lack of knowledge on the user end. The scanner is 10% of the equation, the user is the other 90%.

      also, I have been in contact with iCarsoft on any issues I have noted, they have been good with communication. But its like trying to steer a meteoroid. It takes time. they update as they can, these things are reverse engineered. so there will be some lack of function and usability. but for the price. and what they can do, they are a great medium between someone like yourself the avid do it yourselfer and a knowledgeable tech like myself to get you where you need to be. If that answers the question. and I will look into doing some comparison for sure. Thanks again. Lou

However there are other scanners like autel that can but you’re paying 3,000$ for the scanner and i think 3 years service to save 150$ from the dealer IF you happen to need programming. So if youre a shop its worth it, if youre a do it yourself kinda person, it’s probably not.

I also have a LAUNCH OBD2 Scanner CRP129X, that seems to work well on my other vehicles, but not so well on the Mercedes. Do you have a recommendation for what scanner will work on most of the modules for this vehicle? I purchase the vehicle and found out many things that need repair. I have done several of them myself, but have trouble trying to reset the error codes. I ended up taking it to a dealer to reset the brake code, they said my scanner just wasn't able to complete the reset. I have seen several people that have used a Foxwell NT520 with the Mercedes Software loaded that have used it to deactivate the SBC and then reactivate after the brake work. It will also activate the brake bleeding function. I don't want to spend over $200 for the scan tool. I have owned this car since new. It has 103,000 miles. I am getting ready to replace the valve cover gaskets and while at it, replace the spark plugs and spark plug wires. I never have had the transmission fluid changed. I may have to do that soon as well. So, what are your thoughts? Thanks, Tom

      Okie-Tom so all you need to do is unplug the sbc module. Once you do that you can work on the brakes with no worries. Also you can bleed the brakes with no worries. Once done reconnect the sbc, start car. Warnings may pop up. No worries. Pump pedal about 20 times. Shut car off, repeat. It is setting the pads against the rotorS. Eventually the warnings will cease and all will be right with the world. Lou

But you can simply have a helper that is pressing the raise and lower button to help circulate the fluid, but I would not flush the fluid until you know what code is in the abc module with the icarsoft.

    Hi.. thanks so much for reaching out like you are. I have an 03 E500 w211. Bought it like 2 mos. ago. It seems something is draining my battery. Main and aux are both good. Funny you mentioned Auto Zone because I went there specifically to check the basics and knowing batt. is fine, wanted to see about ruling out alternator and voltage regulator. I had enough charge on battery for them to run it . They said both are good. If that's the case , I know there are other things it could be but. I'm thinking a short somewhere. The term parasitic drain and how to detect where it's coming from has numerous videos that I watched. So my thoughts/questions are: Is an auto shop that hooks your car to a diagnostic machine and charges 140.00, is it a type of check that shows the source of the problem if it's a short or a feature in the car that stays on and I'm not aware of which particular one it is, I think I'm trying to ask what you would recommend as a next step or maybe type of scan to do. The symptoms are, that the the car won't usually start after a day of not much or any driving. When I drive like 80 miles to visit friends in LA it will stay good for about four days. When it gets closer to losing battery power it does two things. I know it probably won't start the next time I try when it has a very tiny but noticeable drag or lagging in the startup. So it starts but with that kinda lag.. Second sign is the battery pic shows in cluster with message malfunction consumer battery switched off. Unless I drive a good distance and put a good charge back on it, it won't start up next time I try. When it charges for the message will disappear.b I am sooooo sorry this is long and drawn out but I am so appreciative of the feedback, advice,etc. It's awesome and I will give back when opportunity to do so comes. Thx, penny

      @MasterTechLou  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      penny brown so sorry on the delay. The parasitic draw test is tedious but it will help find your issue if you do have something drawing excess amperage at rest. And it seems as though I only get message in the cluster , "malfunction , electrical consumers switched off, " as the battery begins to lose more of its power . and that seems to happen when I'm not driving it enough to keep putting a good charge on it.I'm wondering if, based on what the car is doing and if I explained it ok, what you may recommend as my next step.. thank you very much for your input..Very appreciated, Penny

      When we clear codes we have to do the erase and then turn the ignition off for about 15 seconds, also if the code will not clear its possible the fault is current so it will not clear. But trying another scanner may help.

    I bought a Foxwell 510NT Elite after watching this video. I would like to test the pressure output on the ABC pump in my 2005 Mercedes SL500 using this scan tool. Can I run this test with the Foxwell? Any idea where I can find "how to" directions?
    I appreciate the work you do.

    • @MasterTechLou
      @MasterTechLou  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the nice comments. There is no pressure test you can do. All you can do is run the car and check the live value of the ABC pressure sensor. These pumps either have pressure or they don’t. There really is no in between. So, if you don’t have a warning on your dash or a fault code, Then your pressure is most likely fine.

      I wanted to add that I found a video with the procedure to run the Rodeo with the Foxwell 510NT Elite. If it can display the ABC pump pressure I'm sure it is going to come from a display that is from the same route used to get to the Rodeo.

    The iCarsoft should be standard issue with every Benz (just kidding). Still, I have two Mercedes and one in each car. They are small enough to fit in the glove box or other storage and can save you a trip to the dealer, where you'll pay over half as much just to scan and read codes once. I think you can also deactivate the SBC controller on cars with SBC, which is nearly mandatory if you are going to work on the brakes. But it won't let you activate the rodeo sequence in ABC cars.

      I always joked that the V12 should always come with a code scanner cause they always misfire on startup. Also to deactivate the SBC simply unplug it, done. I have done that so many times with no issue. Saves the time of using a scanner or the turn signal method.Thanks, Lou

    I need your help! Can I use the icarsoft to read which actuator is bad in my ac/heater system? Mechanic said its one of the actuators that let the hot air. Im getting no heat into my cabin. They confirmed the heat works but nothing comes in. 2010 s550 4matic

      And its not low in coolant and the heater control valve was replaced

    • @MasterTechLou
      @MasterTechLou  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No the icarsoft will not help with that. Because it cannot activate anything, only read live data and you need something to activate the heater valves and then watch the live data.

    Can you buy a Star Diagnostic setup on , let’s say eBay or CL and then just use it without a subscription to MB? I own a couple of W211’s but I’m also looking at other models and I see how that can be useful for a guy like me. I see a whole setup on eBay at the moment for about a grand. Thoughts? Thanks…..Great video btw

      thanks for the compliment, you can yes get a subscription to mercedes, but you cannot use that subscription with your scanner unless they lease it to you, that is my understanding, but you can use the scanner just like us in the dealer except for programming modules. and software updates.

    I’m planning on getting the icarsoft mb II because I’m trying to erase a transmission code that is stored on the tcm of my mercedes( car won’t shift at all, stuck in one gear). But i wanted to make sure that this scanner , if the problem is fixed, will it clear or erase the codes in the module?

    • @MasterTechLou
      @MasterTechLou  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes I am confident it will., But if you have an older mercedes where the body style didnt end until 2000's then you may need the adapter to go from the 16-38 pin in the engine bay. used on cars like 210 170 202 208 so make sure you do your homework. Lou

      @@MasterTechLou Thanks for the info! It’s a G400 CDI , W463 chassis first gen so it was continued till 2018 . No port located around the engine bay to my knowledge and based on my researches. Anyways once i get it , i’ll be glad to post any update here.

    Do you know how to get a MB subscription for Mercedes Benz xentry. Do they have like a year subscription?

    • @MasterTechLou

      Its like 17k a year as you have to lease their machines and then they provide you with close to dealer access. You can find this out at www.startekinfo.com
