@@mikeslater6246 Christians go through much worse. And he did play Otis reformed in the Return to Mayberry Movie. First I can separate fiction. Personally I don't consider him less Christian for playing Otis Campbell the town drunk. He wasn't the town hero and often his drinking didn't pay off. Go watch the episodes and judge for yourself. It was the time of the 1960s when drinking was thought of differently by the time the 1980s came around people became more aware the problem of alcohol and even people in Hollywood tried to sober up. How many have gone into the Betty Ford Center? If this bothers you then it will have to bother you.
My favorite was when Otis got mad so he went to a different town to get drunk and thrown in jail. Barney started missing him real bad so he went and offered Otis everything that he could think of to get him to come back to Mayberry and get drunk again. Barney promised him so much stuff that all of the other drunks came with Otis to Mayberry and the jail could not hold them all.

i'm the biographer and friend of hal j. smith. some facts on the internet are wrong and in this film.....i live in massena new york, knew hal.....and in 2016 i oganized hal's 100th birthday party with a crowd showing up for his life. thank you. but there is alot more to hal's life....
Hal's best work was as Mr. Whittaker, proprietor of "Whit's End", on the long running radio show, "Adventures in Odyssey". I listened to him for years. He was wonderful.
"The Andy Griffith Show" has 249 episodes, not over 400. As for why "The Andy Griffith Show" parted ways with Otis, there are two reasons I'm aware of. First, sponsors became concerned over the innocent and unrealistic portrayal of drunkenness. Secondly, with the departure of Deputy Barney Fife and the unpopularity of Barney's replacement (Warren Ferguson), there just wasn't much left for Otis. The focus shifted from the comical style of law enforcement to a focus on town life in general, with more emphasis on Aunt Bee.
@daniel, actually those aren't the reasons at all. For quite some time Andy and "Otis" have had numerous disagreements both on and off set; if you have seen any of the many off air movies with the cast and crew, you will not see Andy even speaking to Otis. Andy was a very hard fellow actor to get along with, unless you were Don Knotts; numerous disagreements between Helen Crump, Aunt Bee.., often ending with production of the show stopping, and on one occasion, Howard and Andy were close to fisticuffs.
Aint Bee was a colossal pain in the derriere. The show lost its humor, its heart, when they jettisoned the original cast. Helen Crump, the angry, bitter, jealous grouch...Howard Sprague, the dullard, and "Goober" were just as unpalatable as poor "Warren."
Thank you for explaining what the video did not. It's frustrating when a vid has a title like "Why TAGS parted ways with Otis Campbell" and then never actually say why that happened. But thanks to you, I know!
People still love this show some 60 years later and will love it when it turns 100.I seriously doubt any sitcom post 1960s will ever have that sort of longevity.
Watching this video and Otis on Andy Griffith on MeTv right now. Otis was one of the best acting drunk actors especially for someone who practically doesn’t really drink. RIP Hal. You will live on forever on television reruns filling us with loads of laughter 😂 ❤️
I loved Otis, cause he could make you laugh no mater how much you could be hurting! His talent was such a gift to all of us that needed a good laugh and to feel happy. R.i.p. Hal Smith, forever remembered and forever loved. And thank you.
Wait a minute!! How can you forget that Hal Smith did most of the voices for “Davey and Goliath”? The Evangelical Lutheran Church of America sponsored the stop-action puppet series about a boy named Davey and his dog Goliath that taught kids lessons with a Christian theme. I grew up with it and I got my husband a DVD set of the shows. He loves them!
Wow! Goliath was the town drunk! Maybe he went drinking with Gumby. I remember watching D&G when I was little because if we spend Saturday night at my grandparents it would be on around 6:45 am Sunday morning and my grandma (a Lutheran Sunday school teacher) would have me and my sisters watch it while she was making breakfast before we went to church.
When I married into a family whose father had died, I was introduced to John Avery Whitacre and recognized "Otis" immediately. Hal's commitment to his purpose through these characters, especially Whit, helped me develop deep relationships with my kids as we listened to and discussed Odyssey nightly. Thanks, Hal
I loved Otis! He was such a great character on the show 👏 💯 Also wanted to tell you I love all your videos! So informative and very well said! Keep up the great work Tim! 👍
He was great as a drunk. BTW the medals he received were the same my dad received, as all soldiers did in WWII. they were the greatest generation for sure. RIP sir, thank you for your service.
What an incredibly ignorant comment. NOT "All soldiers" from WWII receive the medals that were mentioned. Not all soldiers received the Philippine Liberation Medal.
I have always loved every character on this sitcom, but Otis is probably my favorite. along with Ernest T., Barney, all of the characters. I still watch reruns even though I have seen them over and over again. Part of my growing up years so to speak. thanks.
Two of my favorite episodes of Otis is when he made his brother believe he was a Mayberry deputy to impress him. Andy and Barny were both in on it. Other one was when the 2 jail cells were occupied so Andy took Otis to stay at the house with Aunt Bea watching him. Otis called Her the 'warden', and when Otis left, he said he never wants to stay at the 'Rock' again. It was hilarious! 🤣

@@timhawks6101 There was at least one post Barney episode with Otis where Warren introduced him to whatever that art is where you use tiles to form scenery. His was of a cow standing in a field.
I have two favorite Ottis episodes: "Hot Rod Otis" and the one where he gets an a citizen award for being a dependent of a hero. He gave a very touching speech and even refused some champagne afterwards but Andy encouraged him since his relative (Nate) would have wanted it that way.
Once Don Knotts left the show, they pretty much had to say goodbye to Otis. The two of them could do physical comedy and played amazingly well off of each other. But without Barney, Otis had no one to play off of.
At the 4:28 mark, I remember him playing the Pancake Man for the International House of Pancakes, IHOP in the early to mid-60s in Los Angeles in the morning before going to school. He would come in with his Magic Spatula singing "The Pancake Man the Pancake Man"... I can't remember the rest. They would play old silent Our Gang shorts with kids dubbing in the narration. Does anyone else remember this show?
I sure DO remember The Pancake Man! It seems to me that the end of the song went something like: " That's the program, got to go, see you on tomorrow's show, at the International House of Pancakes"...Sorry, that's as close as I can get after nearly 60 years...
Loved The Andy Griffith Show. And Barney and Otis were so great together. Great comic timing. I didn't know of Hal Smith's other accomplishments. Bet I saw or heard him 1,000 times and didn't know.

The name of his establishment was Whit’s End. I need to stop watching TH-cam videos at night) It was a radio and animated series produced by Focus on the Family. His name on the show was John Avery Whitaker. It was a Christian children’s program based upon life examples of how to live life based upon biblical principles with faith in Jesus Christ. It was geared toward children but even adults enjoyed listening and watching at times.
Thank you Kevin. I had know clue that Hal was Whit. I think fv almost mentioned it when he said, "in the late '80s and '90s, Hal also reentered the world of radio drama." I was in my 40s, but loved listening to Adventures in Odyssey!
In the Chicago area he played a crooked contractor in a commercial for CBS Channel Two news. He was only on screen for a minute, hiding out in a movie theater talking to a crooked politician when Walter Jacobson, the co-anchor, says “that’s a pretty good story, guys.” I think he was also Winnie The Pooh when Disney went cable.
I would actually laugh out loud watching him! One time he told Andy he felt like he lived in the Twilight Zone 😳 hilarious 😂 That’s how I feel the way life is now! Like I live in the Twilight Zone 😳
Yes it was the USAAF . My father was a B-17 Pilot/Aircraft Commander in the 15th Air Force,5th Bomb Wing,463rd Bombardment Group (Heavy),772nd Bombardment Squadron in 1944.

i'm the biographer and friend of hal j. smith. some facts on the internet are wrong and in this film.....i live in massena new york, knew hal.....and in 2016 i oganized hal's 100th birthday party with a crowd showing up for his life. thank you. but there is alot more to hal's life....
@@allan9603 sounds interesting 🤔
Aint Bee was a colossal pain in the derriere. The show lost its humor, its heart, when they jettisoned the original cast. Helen Crump, the angry, bitter, jealous grouch...Howard Sprague, the dullard, and "Goober" were just as unpalatable as poor "Warren."
Thank you for explaining what the video did not. It's frustrating when a vid has a title like "Why TAGS parted ways with Otis Campbell" and then never actually say why that happened. But thanks to you, I know!
Loved Otis and Ernest T. Bass, a couple of my favorites!
I always loved his voice work in cartoons. They made my childhood back in the 60s and 70s.
Thanks for watching!
I loved Otis on The Andy Griffith Show. The show was one of my favorite growing up and I still watch reruns Monday thru Friday when they are on now
People still love this show some 60 years later and will love it when it turns 100.I seriously doubt any sitcom post 1960s will ever have that sort of longevity.
Noticed him first as a voice actor on the Flintstones describing a bowling match between Fred and another loudmouth while Barney was invisible 🤓😎✌🏻
I'll always love Hal Smith and his Otis character. I hope his son is still very proud of him.
Hal will forever be lovable Otis to me. He was my favorite character on the show.
My favorite otitis episode in Andy Griffith was the loaded goat
who is otitis?
@@keithsw2566it’s a disease
You didn’t mention Adventures in Odyssey he was the voice of Mr Whitaker the owner of Whitt’s End. Loved listening to this on the radio.
Watching this video and Otis on Andy Griffith on MeTv right now. Otis was one of the best acting drunk actors especially for someone who practically doesn’t really drink. RIP Hal. You will live on forever on television reruns filling us with loads of laughter 😂 ❤️
We couldn't agree more, drunk but still has great acting skills! Which episode are you watching?
My hometown was so small we didn't have a town drunk; so we all just took turns...
I still watch show regularly and love it. Barney, Otis and Ernest T. made the show for me. Andy balanced things out.
I loved Otis, cause he could make you laugh no mater how much you could be hurting! His talent was such a gift to all of us that needed a good laugh and to feel happy. R.i.p. Hal Smith, forever remembered and forever loved. And thank you.
You left out how he worked with Focus On The Family in the Adventures In Odyssey. He was the voice for the character Wite
Thanks for telling us why the show parted ways with him. LOL.
He loves them!
its impossible to cover the entire career of hal smith in less than 7 minutes!
You can’t help but to hear his voice when he says, “What’s the matter Davy?”
Yes, Hal loved Christian fantasy as much as most people back then.
He was also the voice of Whit in Adventures in Odyssey.
He was so so good as Otis on Mayberry ! Watched him just this evening when Barney performed a psychological test on him. Classic !
I got to meet Otis in 1990, I even named my dog after 'Otis.'
Lucky❤ get to learn secrets of Andy griffin show
In his later years Hal Smith he played John Whittaker in the radio series called Adventures in Odyssey from 1987 to 1994
When I married into a family whose father had died, I was introduced to John Avery Whitacre and recognized "Otis" immediately.
Always fun to watch him on Andy Griffith shows. My favorite one was the one where they learned that he was a decedent of a local hero.
My favorite was of Hal's voice of Whit on Odyssey 's Focus on the Family's radio.
Great informative video bud! Well done!

@@markusallport1276 - But everyone who served in that theater - received those medals - AKA "Attendance medals" by many in the military
🤣🤣..The Andy Griffith Show reruns was the only thing I saw Hal on. So naturally I thought it was his BEST PERFORMANCE. FUNNY DUDE, OTIS....🍷
They called aunt b bloody Mary.
I love those 2 episodes
I love how Aunt Bea thwarts all of Otis' escape attempts, even the escape in the laundry cliché.
The writers for that show were comedic guinesses, the actor's too, pure gold
You left our his voice actor role as Whit on Adventures in Odyssey.
Hal also did the voice on the radio show "Adventures in Odyssey" as Mr. Whittiker.
he had to be 1 of the top 3 or 4 actors who could play an inebriated person so well, my favorite Andy Griffith's were with Otis in them
Hal, Dick "Mr. Whipple" Wilson and Foster Brooks were the BEST SOBER "DRUNKS" EVER!
Barney and Otis fed off each other as good as Barney and Andy did. Great show ICONS IN TV...
I missed why the Andy Griffith Show parted ways with Otis.
This is what one comment said: As for why "The Andy Griffith Show" parted ways with Otis, there are two reasons I'm aware of. @@timhawks6101 Thank you so much for the reply about Otis. Roger Camp
I miss that part too" ❤ Otis on the Andy griffin show
Tim Hawks reply to me was: "The Andy Griffith Show parted ways with Otis, because of two reasons I'm aware of. @@timhawks6101 There was at least one post Barney episode with Otis where Warren introduced him to whatever that art is where you use tiles to form scenery. His was of a cow standing in a field.
Just finished watching Otis buys a car. Great show.
I have two favorite Ottis episodes:
"Hot Rod Otis" and the one where he gets an a citizen award for being a dependent of a hero. He gave a very touching speech and even refused some champagne afterwards but Andy encouraged him since his relative (Nate) would have wanted it that way.
I loved Otis, wish we had seen more of him on Andy!!!!
Once Don Knotts left the show, they pretty much had to say goodbye to Otis. The two of them could do physical comedy and played amazingly well off of each other. But without Barney, Otis had no one to play off of.
After Barn left the show went down hill....
Thanks for watching!
Thank you! That's more informative per the title than the actual video.
Thank you for saving me time
@@ruthsnyder3462 That's EXACTLY what l posted. The thumbnail question to this video didn't address the question.
I loved Otis. One of my favorite shows was when Otis had to stay at Andy’s house and aunt bea made him work he called her the rock lmas
@@paulwatters9225 That's more than I could remember. I am sure one day I will find all the lyrics.
I like Otis on Andy Griffith ! He was funny just like Barney Fife.. I like Otis in the episodes of Barney and the Governor,Loaded Goat, and others.
He actually never drank alcohol in real life... Good vid...
I think he helped many of our servicemen who truly enjoyed him and needed him!!
He was so funny in "The Great Race" as the Mayor of Baracho (SP)
Loved The Andy Griffith Show. And Barney and Otis were so great together. Great comic timing. I didn't know of Hal Smith's other accomplishments. Bet I saw or heard him 1,000 times and didn't know.
And on the radio show Adventures in Odyssey Hal Smith played John Avery Whittaker.
Great job. Thank you for presenting this content with class, unlike other presenters who try to dig up dirt on celebrities. Well done.

Never watch much of Andy Griffith show, but Otis stood out in my mind, that is why I chose to view this.
Why would he stand 🧍♂️out? Minor character
@@nathaniellathy6559 I have no Idea why he stood out. Otis and the Barber, in addition to the Leads are the only ones I can picture in my mind.
@@rancidpitts8243 Floyd and Otis.Ugh! Insipid characters can make an impression
Strange, how every character on Andy Griffin seemed like and old friend on their first appearance and you never forgot them.
Something you didn’t mention was Hal Smith was the main character on Whit’s End. (It was late when I was writing this so I forgot the actual name of the program was “Adventures in Odyssey”.
Enjoyed him since we were children in so many movies. Recognized his face and talent in all. He is a star and still is unforgettable. Thanks to him.
He was the drunk in The GhostAnd Mr Chicken. But he was a judge on a episode of the Adda.s Family
One time he told Andy he felt like he lived in the Twilight Zone 😳 hilarious 😂
That’s how I feel the way life is now! Like I live in the Twilight Zone 😳
Andy Griffin show is the twilight zone. Of laffter.
Isn't that the truth huh?
'Stranger in Town' really feels like a Twilight Zone episode!
amazing history he has , great actor thanks FV
There was no US Air Force when Smith was in the Service. The USAF was established in 1947. He was in the United States ARMY Air Force. So was my Dad.
