Caruso at this time was incredibly impressive. His slender, unassuming frame and face was always betrayed by his character’s angrily extended middle finger to everyone! The way he said “hell no” to everyone and everything in one way or another was awesome. His character gave ZERO effs all the time and always ready to get down. You knew this Irish bastard was just of the very cusp of exploding! I loved it and miss it immensely!
Rewatching season 1 at the moment. Just finished S01E12 - Martinez heaping praise on Kelly as a mentor and example, while Kelly stalls him in the hall, giving Janice time to access Moreno's notebook. Martinez is saluting Kelly as his hero and at that very moment he's breaking the law - and you can just see on Kelly's face it's eating at his soul, a good cop going outside the lines and his own principles all to protect his lover...hating that he has to do it. Such great acting! I love Bobby Simone, Dennis Franz honestly gave one of the best performances in tv history, I love NYPD Blue even after Caruso left and yet still, STILL, it's the biggest "what if" of all time for me. Even if he was a dick on set, Caruso was INCREDIBLE as John Kelly and I still wish he stayed longer - it was his most perfect role.
Calling Kelly a Punk only fueled his already building Flames for finding the Rug Master. I'd say the "negotiating" is done and now it's time to get into Hit Man Mode for John. Cheers From Ohio

Fearless relentlessness from Kelly. Vengeance for Sipowicz is compelling. What would've the show been like if they'd gotten 5 or 6 seasons from Caruso instead of one and change?

I think the show would have gotten better but only if milch gave kelly more to do. In the later half of season one caruso became a supporting player to Franz. But he brought that on himself.
@@MoneyMakingMitchNY A lot of truth in what you said. As a character what would his role have been? Licalsi in prison. His ex wife kind of relevant. Martinez no longer the rookie needing a mentor. But most of all, Andy getting his life in order (death of his son as an exception). No drinking (few), cuts ties with hooker who set him up, relationship and baby with Sylvia. Where does the ultimate fixer/social worker that was Kelly fit into that? It could've been done esp if Milch had wanted to expand the character's horizons instead of blaming the actor for his heart attack. But in the end were the best episodes with Jimmy Smits. Tough to argue.
@@ianbellis7064 I hated Smits as Bobby because it felt weird to me starting from the beginning with Kelly ( I prefer Kelly's demeanor.. would have been cool to see them share a scene tho). Now I will admit seasons 3 and 4 story wise may have been the shows peak although I think season 1 was the best overall because of all the time they had to plan it and set it up after missing the 92 window because of abc wanting them to change some things. It was no mistake it got so many Emmy nods compared to later season's. Kelly when you reevaluate the first season definitely is a short term character who is meant to bring a certain energy to get the show off the ground and Franz carry it. It's funny I read a blog one time that suggested caruso and Franz characters each could have lead a show without the other and as partners they were both too strong a character to co exist and its pretty noticeable later in season 1 the show didn't need "caruso" but it owes it success to him for the first half of the season. Those first couple episodes was hard hitting. And milch is a son of a gun. Former drug addict who had the nerve to blame caruso for his heart attack. Caruso was a jackass but milch head was far up his ass too.

I feel like the Robin character would have been brought back had david stayed but it's weird because I can't see how her storyline would work... caruso deciding to quit hurt several people's jobs
