Well done Katherine, while China is a developing country and still contains areas and villages that have not had the same level of growth and development, but riding your bike across such vast distances by yourself is a testament of level of civility and safety that not even alot of the developed countries can compare.
if you see rural buildings scattered among high rises and modern structures it is more likely the people who live there chose not to modernize or it was a conscious decision by the city government to preserve that part of the city. despite what western media tells you there are strong property rights in china. one phenomenon you can google is china's nail homes where people refuse to sell their piece of land and construction is forced to build around that piece of property.
Its because your so down to earth & truthful about yourself & able to adjust & assimilate in an entirely different culture that people will admire & respect you at any cost . Your mandarin language is as valuable as your charm to be greeting the ordinary Chinese in a certain village & take the truth about the lake / canal you saw without being offended . This observation is so true: All areas around the high-speed rail lines have developed rapidly. The places without high-speed rail or trains that used to be pretty good decades ago , have been completely abandoned and outdated. That fishing village used to have well-developed waterways, and it couldn't be modernized only having waterways but with no highways. Nowadays it is hard to find villages that haven't changed much for forty years. This bicycle trip was a great idea! I am a cyclist but I live in California and I don't think it would be safe here to ride great distances through strange neighborhoods. Ningbo has always had a "second city" type reputation, I think the last time it might have been wealthy would be back in the 1800s. I find the reaction of the common people to seeing you very interesting, those guys assumed you were Russian! BTW, Dahon bikes are meant for commuting, they are not the most ergonomic rides, hope your body does not get bent out of shape by the end!!!

Always great to see new updates from your channel. The dirt road portion is a horror. As a casual cyclist myself, I can feel the pain of washing the mud and dirt after a wet ride.😆Hope you apply lubricant to the chains after the wash. Keep up the energy!👍
Katherine, another good and educational video which I of course enjoyed. I am also extremely glad that you told the locals what you think of their stinky canal which, hopefully, they will bring up with their municipal leaders who should and would take actions to rectify that problem. Meanwhile, keep on trucking and looking forward to your next video!

I wonder what those wading birds were. We have similar ones here in Europe, called oystercatchers in English or tjeld in Norwegian. They sing very loudly when they fly, but are mostly quiet while on the ground.
I was watching news on TH-cam and it's interesting that your videos automatically jumped into my view following another American man showing his trip back to Shanghai after his 4 years' stay in the US. Hi Kat, nice to "join you" again on your bike adventure. Like you, I also like to explore the local street markets when traveling. Ahh, birds! Those are migratory shorebirds most likely sanderlings. They fly to warmer regions as far as the tropics during winter and return in spring and summer. Till the next segment, take care and ride safe.
The bicycle trip is quite eye-opening, you went places we city dwellers don't usually go. Interesting to see the chicken cow sheep bird etc. in the countryside.
The quality of the video is superb and the vistas so unique. Thank you for documenting both rich and poor, old and new, modern and not so modern villages.
wonderful video. i am a cyclist moved to Shanghai 6 mths ago. i been watching your videos pass 2 years and think this series best one yet.🎉 Thanks for showing China the developing side. Is funny how you mentioned to that guy his canal won the stinkiest award and he just try to look the other way... and the other guy shout with agreement. The local needs to make aware this and now they can make the necessary changes..may be after your video.😂
To me, it is very funny to hear the guy next to the nasty river said that you might be a SPY. I can relate to this joke because my American host has just aske me that same question. One day when we were having dinner together, he suddenly went: Tao, are you a spy? lol 🤣
I'm also the first time I've seen an inflatable door for a funeral, and I actually feel it's quite reasonable. It can be used for leasing and recycling
You didn't argue when they said "Russian girl"! Yesterday I had a guy calling me German, French, American, Russian, almost everything bar English. I asked hime if he was Japanese, at least he laughed about it. Lovely video, nice background music today too, very 60s TVish. Keep up the good work!
Wow you are so rude! What an abominable attitude! You know very well he is a Chinese since you are in his country and speak Chinese. How dare you ask him if he was Japanese! How was he supposed to know where you are from when you can be from anywhere??? Foreigners from Europe and US always think they are much superior than the locals. If you are annoyed just because they don't know where you are from, you can always go back to your country. Simple.
Is that an open sewage pit or drainage? About 20 years ago, I saw that in Suzhou. I think even fish can't survive in that ecosystem. The government should guide or instruct the local villagers of how to avoid using such open sewers. This is why the mosquitoes are so lethal. There is a buffalo and a mule roaming around. Unlike the open sewer, that is good and natural scenery. Again, Kathy uploaded another very informative video. Thank you!
Your video also opened our eyes to those of us Chinese, and learned about the beauty and different customs of the cities in the south of the motherland. Catherine showed the outside world a real China full of vigor and vitality from her perspective. Americans are indeed complicated in the minds of many Chinese people, benefiting from the anti-Japanese and anti-American education, as well as the arrogance of American imperialism. Only people deepen mutual understanding and trust through exchanges and communication
@CULTURE KING,there isnt anti-japanese or anti-american education or sort of, but we remembered histories, we learnt how badly Chinese being treated, and thus responded when there are anti-Chinese narrations still going around.
Great video Katherine. Thanks for showing a disappearing China keep on shooting and showing more of this part of old China. Nostalgia definitely but it's a unique part of China that's is fast disappearing. I remember stinky canals growing up and how it's cleaned now for the better and thanks for reminding me if it 👍👍👍👏👏👏

Good job , exploring the things no matter good or bad . Thanks !
Content gets better and better Katherine is Wonderful! share her videos!
@katherine's Journey to the East. Best China TH-camr by a country mile. Well actually by 2000km!
You are the only foreign vloger that show both developed and untouched sides of China, good to let people know all kinds of China 🎉
The bicycle trip is quite eye-opening, you went places we city dwellers don't usually go. Interesting to see the chicken cow sheep bird etc. in the countryside.
I love love love your videos Katherine!! Keep it up💗Much love from Wuhan 💗
You know it’s a successful trip when you see goth chickens 🧛🏻
Thanks for being frank about the stinky canal! They need to 加油 to fix it.
Thanks for the ride, Kath. I love the scenes of the rural area and respect your honest words, say it bad when its bad 👍
Many thanks for your real China report. It’s interesting to Chinese (me) as well!
从刚入驻抖音就关注阳离子了,今天这里也看到你了。总是从你身上看到乐观,对环境和生命的珍爱。谢谢你的视频。(你的中文进步太大了!)
Anxiously waiting for the next episode.
The quality of the video is superb and the vistas so unique. Thank you for documenting both rich and poor, old and new, modern and not so modern villages.
wonderful video. i am a cyclist moved to Shanghai 6 mths ago. i been watching your videos pass 2 years and think this series best one yet.🎉
Thanks for showing China the developing side. Is funny how you mentioned to that guy his canal won the stinkiest award and he just try to look the other way... and the other guy shout with agreement. The local needs to make aware this and now they can make the necessary changes..may be after your video.😂
Yes, more awareness is necesssary, especially it can then reach to higher authorities and wider groups who can make good decisions.
@2:30 Should've said "look at all those chickens". But seriously, you're a great storyteller. Really enjoying this bike tour series.
Great contents for those in the West.Keep up the good work Katherine.
9:51 The Chinese guy was amazed when you asked whether the pitcher plant will have enough flies to eat when hung in the house… haha!
@5:16 - Taiwan and Hong Kong still have public phones.
Absolutely loving this bike/road trip.

To me, it is very funny to hear the guy next to the nasty river said that you might be a SPY. I can relate to this joke because my American host has just aske me that same question. One day when we were having dinner together, he suddenly went: Tao, are you a spy? lol 🤣
Interesting video! I like that you are traveling through the smaller villages and areas of China.
I'm also the first time I've seen an inflatable door for a funeral, and I actually feel it's quite reasonable. It can be used for leasing and recycling
Your bike journey is fascinatingly enjoyed all of your videos.
Simple.
🤣🤣🤣
You’re living such a meaningful life in China. Please do enjoy your stay.
啥时候有反美教育了?你真会学公知讲话 美国政府对中国怎么样还用专门教育?中国人在外被区别对待还要别人告诉你?
@@malagebide 打倒美帝国义,OK??
@CULTURE KING,there isnt anti-japanese or anti-american education or sort of, but we remembered histories, we learnt how badly Chinese being treated, and thus responded when there are anti-Chinese narrations still going around.
祝你骑行顺利,愿上帝与你同在。喜欢美国和美国人民😊
Thanks for another interesting vid! Just a thought to say hoping you aren't too lonely/lonesome because travelling on your own can be. Take care.
Glad I found this channel for good vibes. Subbed.
Ha ha😅 every time you siad, " l am American." They will say " Are u a spy."
Great video Katherine. Thanks for showing a disappearing China keep on shooting and showing more of this part of old China. Nostalgia definitely but it's a unique part of China that's is fast disappearing. I remember stinky canals growing up and how it's cleaned now for the better and thanks for reminding me if it 👍👍👍👏👏👏
Hi Katherine may I suggest for subtitle?, If you talk in english, the sub only in chinese, and if you talk in chinese the sub is english, for me, it more enjoyable to watch because less distraction hehe..
