In Chinese Traditional Culture, the funeral is called “喜丧” for a person having a very old age when passing away. (maybe more than 80+). You must smile and blessing for living such a long life. Thus, the funeral normally wears red clothing and is like a celebration.
古人認為“福壽雙全”的逝者,才算是喜喪。如果更詳細,去世的老人若滿足了∶“全福、全壽、全終”這三個條件 This is pretty rare in the old days. 全壽 is 90 year or older. 全終 is natural death. 全福 usually mean large happy family.
This is my hometown, and when I attempt to describe it, I find my vocabulary limited. The dominant features include money, labor, noise, and pollution, as I live in an industrial area. However, your video today reminded me that there's more to share. The towns are surrounded by narrow alleys, rivers, and temples. Btw, stone sculptures that look like lions are actually qilin. Thanks for sharing your tour.😊
Hi, Katherine! I'm a big fan of your channel. I love seeing the lesser known parts of China that you're showing in your videos. There's plenty of other channels that showcase the big cities and tall skyscrapers (which are cool, too), but only yours show the China off the beaten path. Keep up the great content!
Thank you for visiting my hometown. It brings back a lot of memories. I left Wenzhou when I was 7. Spent over a decade in Europe, then moved to the USA where I still reside today. As you stated, Wenzhou used to be very polluted. Your bike tour series is a great reminder that things can change when there's a genuine will to do so.
Seems like a really nice mix of the old and new. Sometimes I feel like the "new" comes to dominate some places in China, but it's great to see so much of the character of Wenzhou is still there. That lion though - that's definitely a "new" one!
This is another wonderful look at Wenzhou. (10:22) The memory of your friend really adds depth to learning more about this city, and the huge transformation of China in the last 40+ years. Wenzhou is a coastal city facing waves of European colonizers, bringing with them "invasive species" to the local environment. (3:00) See that cross on the dome? ( 3:22) (3:35) The cross came with this lion image. (7:19) more invasive species. Globalization has its pluses and minuses.
Hi! Katherine, Hope you all well and I am a fan of you. Thank you for your efforts and heart to improve environments in China. It's amazing to see you swim in river and biking on the green scnery bikeway. I am so happy to see this is happening in China. keep doing the good works
Very interesting bike tour. This area is really nice and I love those narrow alleyways which are absolutely characteristics! China has so many places to discover!!! Thank you very much. The video was really amazing.

I like your video. I have freind in Yongkang of Zhejing. But I never visited the place that you visited. You presented many very significant things and ancient houses. It is great.
Katherine, you are a massively wonderful channel creator. I learn so much and love watching your tours of China. Thank you so much for all your time and dedication to making original content. Very wonderful.
I have been to Wenzhou, but never visited such a wonderful hidden gems like in your video. Thanks Kat for your great adventure in Wenzhou. Always stay healthy, happy and success. 👍🏻🙏🏻😍
A great video from a very courageous lady, wonderful to see so much of China from the travels on a bike, keep up the good work and thanks for sharing 😊
Cangnan is where one branch of the Minnan (Southern Fujian) dialect is spoken, as the ancestors of many residents there migrated from Southern Fujian a few hundred years ago. You can tell by the accent of one of the environment officials.
Sometimes I seldom walk narrow alleyways, but there in Wenchou looks mysterious and eccentric to explore. Cycling next to the stream can be cool, as we could ride a boat there.
Having visited Wenzhou several times (my wife is from there), this was a great watch! I never knew that water area was an urban swimming center because it was always cold when I went there! It's so fun to just people watch around that area, always interesting stuff going on.
Nice~ I see so many interesting spots for photography around the alleyways~ So much activities going on in this video~ 7:55 that is indeed a rare sight of a funeral. 8:41 Damn that truck driver speeding with that load... Have to say that 9:05 is one interesting looking bridge. Can see your friend really lit up when reminiscing about her childhood house. 😄 Really enjoy seeing snippets of how the people get on with their lives there in your videos. Great video.👍
Great show, as always, Katherine, thanks!! 👍👍You sure has lost some weight, gaunt looking, make sure you eat well, especially when biking lately!! Places, off the beaten track, are always welcomed and appreciated to witnessed, Cheers!!!👌👌👌
The stone lion supposed to be different from real lion, haha, I would say Katherine has some sense of humor😀Support from a guy who always stay at home.
Loved the marching bands at the funeral procession! I spent some time in Ghana, and they (the Ewe ethnic group) have like a 6 hour dance party for the dead, with the corpse sitting in a chair watching. It was also a unique experience. I am arriving in China this week. Looking forward to it!

Another beautiful day to watch & enjoy your video! Watching this from: Seattle, Wa. Thank you Katherine, looking forward again & patiently waiting for your new update video.. Again Thank you! ❤
I actually finished this bike tour at the beginning of July and this particular section was in June , I am just sooo slow at editing because I am very busy with other work projects at the same time . Wenzhou was very hot even in June but then most of the rest of the route was quite nice for the most part just avoid the few hottest hours around noon
When my grandma died at the age of 90, the great grandchildren all wore those red sashes and although we adults did wear the various mourning clothes with pin ons according to our generation in the fam8, there wasn't much weeping but more a quiet feeling of satisfaction that grandma had seen three generations following her.
Normal funeral in wenzhou (cremation) starts very early in the morning, like 4 am or so. Where family member will do rituals and prayers (also days before) and sent off the diseased to the creamatorium. Usually whem all the rituals etc are done, they come back with a band of musicians. Id not mistaken.
Chinese tradition in some areas : "laugh funeral 笑喪" for those pass away when over 70 and decease naturally. Red decorations instead of white and black to celebrate the longevity.
Katherine, your trice retraced wenzhou visits makes an impression on you as it conveys the real China vibes; I was fortunate enough to be born and raised in the middle of Yangon Chinatown so I appreciate your colleague enthusiasm and sentiment with temples, markets and narrow alleys though my 17th street was twice as wide. Were you taking pot luck with your baidu maps? Ha ha even in American culture, funeral processions are avoided at all cost, not so different after all. The superstition is after a funeral attendance, you should't visit an expectant mother😅I am also a little perturbed at your pitchblack bike foray. Did you mistime you own curfew?😛
The funeral procession was new for Huan too. I could also tell you about her experiences with anatomically correct statues but she probably wouldn't thank me! Lovely video, as always!
Katherine , you are the envy of everyone who depends on gas-powered vehicles to move around. Enjoy every minute of scenery and video in your wonderful China trip. May you find happiness and freedom in the land of dictator and joyless(?) life in China.God bless you and your family!

Great view!!❤
