  • Let's take a look at the growth rate of some burmese pythons, and how I feel they should be raised.
    NO- the bins are not their enclosure. I pulled them and stacked them to provide easy access for the video.

      Jason's Exotic Reptiles I’m not judging how you care for your animals with this question but I’m curious. Is it suitable to keep snakes in bins like that ? Do they have enough space in there ?

    • @humbertojimmy
      @humbertojimmy 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's correct. But obese isn't the same thing as having the natural fat reserves nature intended. I see many people make the mistake of judging every animal species by *human* standards. That's just wrong. If you kept a polar bear as a pet and you told me you were trying to get him unfat and muscular, i would say you were torturing and killing the poor thing, because they ARE supposed to be fat!!! Each species has their own normal fat level, and human standards aren't the regulating norm by any long shot. Burms are, in fact, supposed to fatten up a bit more than most other big pythons. With my 20 year experience i can tell where that limit falls, and that's where i try to keep them at. But i'll tell you: it's not exactly at Rocky Balboa lean. *THAT* is a mistake (especially in a female breeder).

    • @pain002
      @pain002 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@TheJoker083 it's somewhat reasonable as temporary homes when they're not that big but definitely should switch to a big enclosure when being sold. Breeders very often tend to these racking systems for space reasons.

    Thank you so much for this! I've got a Burm at home and I've been searching for information but most videos only show retics and titans. My boy is about 2.5 years and he's 7 feet. He's just the sweetest and I love him dearly! He's really curious and active and wants to spend a lot of time roaming the apartment. And he loves to climb! So that guy is all muscles! I interact with him every day (except when he's in shed - then he's a grumpy one!) so he's really calm and tame and he rarely hisses anymore. He's never bitten or even struck at anyone. I feed him moderately because I don't want him to grow to quickly. I was a bit afraid that that maybe wasn't right so I'm really glad I watched this video!

    Man, thank you for making this video! I’ve been worried my burm was too under sized, he’s about 2 years old and probably around 5 feet. This made me feel a lot better about his size. I feed about every week to two weeks. He looks healthy, I was just concerned he’s smaller than he should be.

    I love berms. I used to have a 15 year old female but I had to rehome her when I moved out of my moms house in my 20s. I would totally have one again if I had someone I trusted to help me handle it when it gets big. Carpet pythons and boas are the biggest snakes that I feel comfortable handling by myself.

    You hit the nail on the head. I JUST picked up a big female burm from a guy who had her in a 100g tank. She hasn't been touched in over 3 years. He was feeding her a 3-5 lb rabbit every 2 weeks. SHE IS FAT! (Let me point out that I am not knocking her original owner. He is an extremely nice man, I just think he was in over his head a bit. She was his one and only snake) I have her in one of my 6x3x18's right now but have an 8x4x4 on order for her. She is an absolute unit. One of the most impressive animals I have ever seen, let alone had in my collection. She is on a diet now. Only being fed every 2 months and taken off food entirely for a few months during the winter. She will also be going out in the yard for exercise if i can manage to pull her out. She is SUPER vocal. Sounds like an air compressor. She is roughly 15-16 ft and I'd say pushing 200 lbs easily. So I have A LOT of work to do with her. But I couldn't be happier with her. She is an absolutely amazing animal.

    I've noticed that a lot of snakes will grow at different rates even ones of the same species, I have some that have been growing really slowly over the last few years and I have some that grew fast, then slowed down. A lot of growth rate can come down to exercise, the more exercise the snake gets, the faster they tend to grow. Over feeding/power feeding is another issue but so is stunting, that can really mess them up too!
    Thanks for the video, it's great to see the expected growth rate of a burm, I'm planning to get a male from a friend that breeds. I chose a male because I don't mind having a 12ft snake but I'd rather get time to ease into that possibility(I know 10ft is more likely), lol! I'm also planning on getting a male green anaconda but I'm not sure when I'll be jumping on that, I just know I will.

    Great to see that these guys don't have to become unreasonably huge in such a short time frame. After being on the fence on whether or not I wanted to commit to getting a burm, this video tipped me over it and I have a near-yearling green het granite/alb female arriving Wednesday. Couldn't be more excited.
    It's definitely a bit of a step up from my 7ft boa and my ~9ft Bredli that passed a couple years back, but this video made it seem much more feasible than the ones that regurgitate those constantly-spewed claims where if you get a burm, you're looking at an 18-20ft snake in 5 years.

    Great video and well explained especially about how a big constrictor can be dangerous if your on your own, I'm a boa keeper and the point you've made about slow growing the snakes is good, hopefully more people will watch this and learn...liked and subscribed

    Love Burms. They're getting a lot of bad press at the moment in the US due to the everglades problem, but they are beautiful snakes.

    • @MybeautifulandamazingPrincess
      @MybeautifulandamazingPrincess 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The press is what is bad. They are genociding pythons in florida and the fault is of people who released them outside. They're being called pests. That is animal cruelty and abuse. They could very well relocate them or something instead of exterminating them
      One day humans will pay for their crimes against animals, if we continue doing that shit instead of respecting animals and Life. Animals have the right to live too

    • @kariridge2652
      @kariridge2652 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@MybeautifulandamazingPrincess people didnt "release them outside".. Hurricane Andrew caused them to be freed from the Miami zoo
      And they are killing the entire ecosystem in the Everglades, they need to kill them.

    • @Infernalapathy
      @Infernalapathy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MybeautifulandamazingPrincess I can understand why they need to be killed, because they're disrupting the natural ecosystem and harming native wildlife. Snake Discovery does a great video explaining why they have to be destroyed and can't just be relocated.
      That's not to say that I don't think it's sad, however. They didn't swim over to Florida from Asia on their own. They're in the Everglades because people put them there. Whether it was a breeding facility or released pets is irrelevant.
      It's good to see videos like this anyway. Of all the snakes I've ever owned, my Burmese python was by far my favourite. They make wonderful pets providing you have the means to care for them correctly.

      Do Burms like to climb?
      Some of these snakes remind of the ones I saw at House of Reptiles. They seemed *very* curious.

      Yes! There are so many retics with the girth of a burm or more. I get yelled at by the community for just asking. Burms are girthy but not as much as these many obese ones out there.

    Your animals are so beautiful! I always wondered why I thought a lot of Burms are kind of ugly, but now I realise it's because a lot of them are overweight. I have two young Burms and I feed them the same way I feed my boa constrictor - nothing wider than the snake and with enough time in between feeding. I can't wait for them to be large, but I also want them to be healthy.
