I honestly don't know how I thought I could crochet before I met you. I have been crocheting for 59 years and it was just ordinary. Then I found you and my crocheting has improved in leaps and bounds. It's great being able to go over some older vidoes to refresh my memory. You have given me a new enthusiasm for crochet and I will never stop. Thank you.
Thank you so much! Really happy to hear this! Although I'm sure you knew a LOT about crochet also before finding my channel but it's great there have been new things! 💗
My grandma started teaching me to crochet when I was 8 or 9 years old, but she passed away before I turned 10 so she didn't really have time to teach me very much. All I really knew was the chain, slip stitch, single and double crochet and how to weave in my ends. Since I didn't yet have the skills to make a lot of very useful items, hadn't yet learned to read a pattern, had no one else in the family to teach me, and could not figure out from written instructions how to work new stitches like the half double and triple crochet, I lost interest fairly quickly. Then the internet happened, TH-cam was invented, and I recently discovered the crochet community. So, here I am, more than 40 years later, spending entire afternoons watching wonderful, generous people like you crochet online, trying my best to imitate what you do, and feeling so proud of myself when I get it right! Sometimes, I feel like I'm 8 years old sitting on the couch with my grandma again. Thank you so much for sharing your skills and knowledge with the rest of us!
Thank you so much for sharing! TH-cam certainly changed a lot about all kinds of crafts, making it easy for anyone to teach what they know and anyone to watch! Happy crocheting! 💗
Geez, I’d be happy with the “before” swatch! I’m a beginner, and, have been practicing, practicing, practicing, small swatches, getting better, slowly. I’m not giving up, certainly would welcome a break through in crochet. I appreciate your teaching
Thank you. I've been crocheting for 4 decades and still learning new tips and techniques. Love what it does for ribbing!! I'll be doing that from now on. Thank you for sharing.
Dear Tuula, Thank you for sharing this stitch tutorial. I love all the tips and tricks I learn from you, my crochet is better for it. Take care and stay safe and well. God’s blessings 🧶🙏🏼💗😻🦋🐶
I can't wait to try this out!!! I've been crocheting for nearly 20 years on and off, give or take andI have ALWAYS had a bumpy edge, NOW Hopefully with this technique I won't have to worry about this anymore!!!!
Thank you very much for your wonderful tips. I crochet since almost 60 years and I never really learned it. Since I watch tutorials on TH-cam I learned a lot. 😊❤
i actually did this instinctually when i first started crochetting, nobody showed me, i had to learn to do chains and turn. i feel affirmed! i do like a neat crochet. :)
I am happy that you are doing this Video. This 1st one is how I've been doing mine ends. I never like the whole chain 1 since it doesn't count as a stitch N you don't need it. One day i tried it N like it been doing for a few years now. Am far from an experiences Crocheter. I am glad there's finally a Video so many beginners will see it now. I never saw a Video on where you don't really need to chain 1 at the end of every row. Thanks for sharing this
That is so true! There is always more that we all can learn. I have been crocheting since the late 1960"s too, and I just learned a new way to achieve a smoother edge. Thanks so much for sharing this gem😍
Thank you! I'm struggling with learning a new craft while being a perfectionist. This helps a lot. My biggest problem still is having straight sides, without adding or missing stitches. I'll keep learning and try not to sweat the small mistakes.
Many people have problems is keeping the same number of stitches in the beginning. But it becomes automatic as you crochet more so just enjoy crocheting, even if you make mistakes! 💗
The way you go into that last stitch on ribbing example is same way I learned to end each row on Suzette pattern from bag-o-day crochet. I much prefer that method on Suzette. Hadn’t thought about it on virtually everything else that doesn’t require border. But will be implementing more for sure. Thank you
This post just came across my feed, and I'm so glad it did! The way you began this post by saying that you weren't going to correct us, but instead you were going to show us a different way to achieve straighter edges. You are sharing your expertise to be helpful in a non-judgmental manner, and I LOVE this. You are a true teacher and instructor - you are here to educate, inspire, and encourage others (my personal mission statement), and I thank you for these helpful tips to becoming a better crocheter.
I'm wanting to, after many years, get back in to crocheting again. This will help me start with better techniques from the start. Thank you very much! 🤗
Greetings from Mumbai India. Thank you for this invaluable tip. Have been crocheting more than 40 years and always hated the sides of scarves/blankets but now i can get a smooth edge thanx to you.
Greetings! I am in my 70's and learning to crochet. I just found you on videos this morning, and in watching just 3 of your videos, I have learned so much! These tips and tricks are the things no one tellsa beginner,, so you are now my "friend sitting next to me" as I learn. Thank you!
i started making a hat with ribbing but i was getting frustrated trying to figure out the best way for straight edges. i found your video expecting to just see the normal straight edge method but then you showed the back loop only which is exactly what i needed!! thank you so much!!
Great tip! I’m one of those who’s been crocheting for years and am continually amazed at how much more I can learn. Thanks for sharing. It looks so much neater!😊
@TuulaMaaria thank you for such detailed and thorough step-by-step explanations. Watching & listening to your videos has helped me learn so much! I’ve taken up crochet as a way to remember & honor my Nana & Grandma who were both amazing craftswomen, and you are helping me do work that I think they’d be proud of.💝
It's the same distance but instead of adding yarn you are adding half the distance by pulling on the previous stitch and half by stretching the next one. 50/50. Genius! Got my sub, sis, can't wait to check out your other work. Thank you so much!
I've been crocheting since I was a kid, and am overly set in my ways. I have seen this technique elsewhere, but there's just something about how you explain it that makes it click better in my head. Thank you for making your videos and sharing your skills with us ❤
I been doing it all my life this way, and didn't know this was the right away, I didn't like the other way because it was easy to loose one stich on the corner when turning, thank you for showing it.
Hi, I just found you & subscribed. Amazing difference. I have never ventured beyond scarves or afghans because of my edges. Can't wait to try this out . Thank you!
The ribbing!!!!!!! It looks so finished!!! And how it’s insert not the back loop but still looks wonderful is just!!! Thumbs up a thousand times!!! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
So simple, yet what a difference! I love learning new things. I was thinking - but sometimes I want those holes for stitching into... and then you pointed it out. Ha! Thanks for sharing.
Videos like these are extremely helpful for me! I have just started last week, and so far the chain and the single stitch are the only things I can do! Extremely helpful video for me, thank you! Gave it a thumbs up and subscribed
Ohhhhhhh! I’ve been crocheting since the late 60’s too! And I never saw this technique! It looks like you took a needle and whip-stitched it on those ends! And so easy! THANK YOU DEAR TUULA!!! 🙏♥️🕊✝️👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🙋♀️😘🕎💜
I’m also learning this again I started crocheting when I was 10 years old but I stopped in my teens and now I’m in my late 30s I’ve picked up the joy of crocheting and am loving every bit of it 😊
I really appreciate the little details that make a big difference, like which way to turn the work. A lot of instructors - and instructions -don’t realize how much difference these little things make. I would not have thought of applying this technique to single crochet ribbing - thanks for that, too. And the tip about when to use it with ribbing, and when not to, just takes things to another level. I am amazed!
I found you this morning after church and want to thank you for your tips to make a smoother edge. Very helpful. I've subscribed to your channel and am looking forward to watching you. Blessings 🎉
Crocheting for years and I am always dissatisfied with my edges, straight but like in your sample. Getting ready to make some small pumpkins. Definitely will try your suggestions.
Thank you ! The gaps in the ribbing drove me crazy… I will do this from now on as crocheting hats is my preferred projects. I make a lot and donate to homeless shelters when I have over 50.
Great pro tip to do 1 side with the chain 1 and the other without in order to pick up loops. I'll be using that technique on the next beanie I make. Thank you so much 💓
I started crocheting about a month ago. I'm about to start doing more advanced pieces. This is a game changer! Your tutorial is very easy to understand and follow along. Thank you auntie!!
Recently back into crochet. Trying to get through with arthritic hands not fun. I really enjoy your videos! You explain yourself well and are very pleasant to watch. Found you a couple days ago. I was flipping through so many that talk about straight edges and perfect this and that. For a gift maybe you would want perfection. However, for me I like the thought of all the raw edges and all the little imperfections. I have made and given away blankets and things in my 60 years on earth and I will point out some of the oops in my work and hug them and tell them it came from the heart. To me it is a part of my life and my days that I have laying on the back of the couch or my kitties love to snuggle on or that hand sized rose motif crochet blanket that took year and half to finish that you lovingly and whole heartedly gave to your mum. To me the oops is part of it all. Will watch more of your videos Thank you ❤
Thank you, glad you found my channel! Hope you can continue to crochet despite arthritis. Yes we all decide what degree of perfection we go for. So many people want to get new tips even if they don't necessarily start using them that any time I hear of a new one or remember something I have done in the past, I make a video about it! 💗
@TuulaMaaria I love your tips and your accent! I was just thinking how I could apply this one. I just started a set of Lemon stitch placemats n coasters I think the clean edges would refine this for the table and make great gifts too. Thank you, arthritis is debilitating when you are a crocheter. My husband got me some special copper gloves and it helps a lot. Hope others will try them too. I saw your video where you where outside and I thought you might be German but it is Finland? I spent a big part of my life in Germany and around Europe. Do miss it.
Somewhere along the line I managed to occasionally 'break' the turning chain rule and could get straight edges, but didn't have it firmly in mind to do consistently. I shared this to a person in a Tapestry group where this is very important for neat work as the BEST VIDEO on the subject and saved it in my browser. THANK YOU🌹
Amazing how just the slightest change can create such a different look. Thankyou ! I have been crochets since I was 14 and am now 52 but I was self taught and only had books and had a very difficult time. I wish I could have known you years ago, glad I can learn now better ways ❤to
Ahhhhh! So much tidier. Love it! Thanks again for sharing this in an easy way to understand. You always are clear and uncluttered in your explanations, which I greatly appreciate.
Hiya Tuula. I tried single crochet using your tip, and it worked out really well. I've been making a scarf, and it looks much better now.... thank you 😊 😊
That s so simple but I never would’ve thought about doing it. The edges don’t lie tho they’re much nicer with the stretched stitch. I have always turned my work so that the yarn falls to the back but everyone on TH-cam does the opposite so of course I felt like I’m doing it wrong. So thank you for making me feel vindicated in how I turn my work😂🥰
Oh, in all crochet I would see it important to turn so that the yarn stays at the back, otherwise you get an ugly piece of yarn easily showing! Although I have very rarely seen anyone turn that way on videos but there must be then if you have seen it often!
@@TuulaMaaria so many of the videos I watch do but these are pattern videos not teaching how to actually crochet so maybe that is the difference. They’re not really making a piece true to size. Mostly just mini swatches of the blanket or shawl
@@TuulaMaariaI did some crochet as a teenager, but mostly knitted mittens for my siblings, and have only within the last five years started crocheting again. I've always wondered whether it makes a difference, turning back to front or front to back, and I too have seen both ways on TH-cam, and now you've answered that question! Can you answer, tho, what do you mean, "the yarn falls to the back?" My biggest problem is maintaining consistent tension, especially at the end of rows, where my stitches get tighter and tighter.
What! That’s amazing, that’s such a huge improvement! And you explain it so, so well. Thank you so much! Also, love hearing your accent, brings out a lot of childhood memories ❤
Great! Yes, it always takes a while to get used to doing something in a different way. There are still many places where it is just as good to chain one, this is best fro where the edge is left showing clearly.
Depends on what you are making 😊 The chain 1 still is good for many things but not if the edge clearly shows. If you are going to make a border afterwards it is better to chain 1 because then you get the hook through easier.
Game changing! Thank you! Looking forward to going back and learning more of your pro tips. I usually turn first then do the turning chain, so even your before method was different for me. Beautifully explained and clear video 🙏 🫶💫

My turns are very hit and miss!! They will now be much better. Hopefully, in future, my ribbing will begin and end with the same number of stitches.
@@Scotty7268 I know what you mean.
@@Scotty7268 Very often I have counted the stitches in ribbing on every row to make sure!
Thank you so much for sharing this valuable tip. Looking forward for more such tips from your end 🥰

Stitch markers are a godsend! Specially the safety pin looking ones, it's how I still do it crochet 30+yrs now ❤
Takes an already beautifully smooth edge. Achieves the impossible, and makes it the most perfect edge ever.

Thank you! Yes, it has certainly got so much easier to get new tips since TH-cam and other means online! Happy crocheting!
Your end of row tip has been a game changer for me. Thank you very much for making this video.
Lovely, thank you!
Doctor Tuula, you help us fix everything !!
😁💜
Greetings from New Zealand. Over 50 years of crochet and I always hated the edges. This is so simple. Thank you so much.
Lovely! Greetings from Finland!

Wow ! The edges were always a nightmare for me . Thanks a lot for sharing! Brilliant! ❤❤
That's great!

i love your simple explanation! thank you!
Ahhhhh! So much tidier. Love it! Thanks again for sharing this in an easy way to understand. You always are clear and uncluttered in your explanations, which I greatly appreciate.
Thank you so much! 😊
My crochet has improved so much just from this one tip. Thank you!!
Wonderful! 💜
I love your tips. I’ll try that one the next time I single crochet or make ribbing!! Happy Thanksgiving 🦃
Thank you so much, you too! 😊
Amazing how many new tips you can learn to improve your work of art! Thank you for your knowledge and tutorial!
Thanks for watching!
I learned something new today because of your great tips. Thank you very much.
Glad to hear it!
Hiya Tuula. I tried single crochet using your tip, and it worked out really well. I've been making a scarf, and it looks much better now.... thank you 😊 😊
Sounds great! This is especially useful for scarves becauue the edge shows all the time!
Yay🎉that’s an amazing trick! Gonna use over and over again!
Great! 💜
I'm so new to crochet that I wasn't aware that the ribbing was possible at all! Thank you so much.
Great! See also this other ribbing, it is stretchier although a bit slower to do th-cam.com/video/TJOZkHwiuPE/w-d-xo.html
I started 3 weeks ago and turning has been SUCH a struggle. The way you film very up close and slow is so so helpful. Very very good tutorial ty
Glad it was helpful! Happy crocheting!
That s so simple but I never would’ve thought about doing it. The edges don’t lie tho they’re much nicer with the stretched stitch. I have always turned my work so that the yarn falls to the back but everyone on TH-cam does the opposite so of course I felt like I’m doing it wrong. So thank you for making me feel vindicated in how I turn my work😂🥰
You are actually the first pioneer.... you should be proud of yourself ❤❤
@@fritula6200 😂😂maybe the second after you 💕
Oh, in all crochet I would see it important to turn so that the yarn stays at the back, otherwise you get an ugly piece of yarn easily showing!
Can you answer, tho, what do you mean, "the yarn falls to the back?"
My biggest problem is maintaining consistent tension, especially at the end of rows, where my stitches get tighter and tighter.
That is how I turn my single crochet projects but I never thought to do it when doing ribbing. Thank You. 😊
Great!
What! That’s amazing, that’s such a huge improvement! And you explain it so, so well. Thank you so much!
Also, love hearing your accent, brings out a lot of childhood memories ❤
Thank you! Interesting that my accent brings memories - maybe you used to live in an area of many Finns 😊
Great tips! Thank you! Just shows me you're never too old to learn new things!
Thank you! You are so right!
This is great! I will definitely try this!! It will take a while because I’m so use of chaining one then turning… can’t wait to try it
Great! Yes, it always takes a while to get used to doing something in a different way. There are still many places where it is just as good to chain one, this is best fro where the edge is left showing clearly.
So now we are all supposed to unlearn the "chain one turn" 😂 I love this. Thank you ❤
Depends on what you are making 😊 The chain 1 still is good for many things but not if the edge clearly shows. If you are going to make a border afterwards it is better to chain 1 because then you get the hook through easier.
Thank you so much!❤❤❤❤ I'm a beginner and the smooth edges trick when ribbing is exactly the answer I've been looking for!!!! I love you 😃💕🌟
Thank you, so glad it was helpful to you! 💗👍
Thank you very much for sharing your experience, Jonya T. I have learned to crochet 5 years ago and I really enjoyed; you so kind.
Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for this tip! 🙏🏻❤ Those holes in the edge always made me mad, but now I have a solution! 👍🏻
You’re welcome 😊
oh thank you! That was the best, clearest, most concisely and simply demonstrated crochet video I have ever seen on youtube! 👏👏👏
Oh wow! Happy to hear that! 💗💗
Great tip and explained and demonstrated very well.
Thank you so much!
Thank you for being such a great teacher! My projects have never looked so good.
So glad to hear, thank you! 💜
Game changing! Thank you! Looking forward to going back and learning more of your pro tips. I usually turn first then do the turning chain, so even your before method was different for me. Beautifully explained and clear video 🙏 🫶💫
Thank you! I'm trying to think if it makes a difference if you turn before chaining - probably not!
