How to Crochet Straight Edges with Popular Crochet Stitches

- Have you wondered how to crochet straight edges with the most popular crochet stitches?
In this video I'll show you how to keep your edges straight when making single crochet, double crochet, half double crochet, and treble crochet stitches. There are several easy techniques that will keep the edges straight as you crochet.
It's important to note there is nothing wrong with traditional wavy scalloped crochet edges. Many times the wavy edges work out beautifully for some patterns. However sometimes when making items like scarves or items that need to be joined together, you might prefer to have a straight edge instead.
I'm using a size G 4 mm crochet hook for my sample and worsted weight 100% acrylic yarn. Feel free to use any other size yarn and hook for your samples.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask. I hope you enjoy this video! Donna Wolfe from Naztazia

Your nail polish is absolutely amazing!
I was jist admiring that as well ❤
GENIUS! I’ve been crocheting since me and Jesus were in high school 🤣 and I’ve never seen these! Thank you for sharing Donna! This will definitely be implemented in my projects from now on . 🥰🧶
Glad it was helpful!
@@naztazia videos are always informational and easy to follow.
Bwahahaha same here! These are brilliant!
Please don’t use Jesus’s name in your silly jokes 😡😡
@@Grany571 there was no offense intended. I was simply implying how old I am and it’s my first amendment right to free speech that allows me to say whatever I want. And if you don’t think God/Jesus (because they’re the same) has a sense of humor you’re sadly mistaken. Look at the platypus. 😑🤣
Oh! I almost forgot…May God keep and bless you should he see fit to do so. Have a lovely day.🥰

Donna, this is AMAZING! I have been struggling with making straight edges, almost to the point of tears! I have so many things I want to make but finding that last stitch was difficult. You are the best teacher ever! I like to use markers but i know the placement is always off. Goodbye tears!

I love the stacked singles, but have never tried using it on the very first stitch in the starting chain. I’m going to start doing that now. Thanks!
And your nails are gorgeous! 🤩

I’ve only learned of stacked DCs. This was SO helpful for all the stitches!
You are so welcome!
I've been experimenting with various techniques to eliminate the gap caused by the turning chain. This is the best tutorial so far. I prefer the first one for double crochet & the second one for single crochet. Thanks for sharing!
Glad it helped!

Omg Donna I love it your a genius 😂 and those nails are gorgeous please share that color/brand sweetie 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thank you! I'm not really sure of the color. Some sort of chrome reflective in red.
Hey Donna, beautiful nails 💅.
A favour please. Could you show how to end your row in DC? I think I always insert my hook in the wrong stitch and end up with a horrible looking edge
👍🤩💝Explained very well. Thank you.
👍🤩💝Your nail polish is always beautiful. I wish you would talk about your nail polish. What color is that?
Thank you! Chrome powder over a gel polish that is cured with an LED light.
@@naztazia 👍🙏💝Beautiful. Thank you. I will ask for it at the nail salon. 🤩
Seus trabalhos são lindos e maravilhosos, por favor teria como colocar legenda em português na vídeo aula 🌹
Thank you for sharing. May I asked what kind of yarn is it in the video
Thankyou for your wisdom. Does this change the count along the row or will the count be the same. Thankyou
It would be the same stitch count. This stitch would just replace the first stitch, which is usually a chain 2 or 3.
Good morning Donna so I have a question I’m doing a lemon peel stitch pillow chained 57. is the solution to straight edges pretty much not chaining one even if the pattern says so? because my pattern is chain 57 (skip to second stitch sc stitch across all 57) then once I get to end chain one turn work and begin (sc)(dc) my edges are not too straight but I believe it’s because of that chain one instead of just turning as I’m watching your examples it makes so much sense as to why I believe the straight edges method would be just to turn and not chain one.
I always use method 2. Never seen the 1st method but will have to try it. Ty! ❤
Hope you like it!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😊
Where do you get your crochet hooks? Is there a place where we can order a set?
Can you use the new granny square yarn for tunisian?? Ty.
Yes, the yarn is nice to create stripes in the work, whether doing Tunisian crochet in rows or regular crochet. As many have mentioned, there are mixed results with actual granny squares.
What stitch? Still lezrning.ty.
Hi, quick question do I end the row on a dc or do I end it with the two single crochets?
Rows end with the regular double crochet stitch. The alternate stitches, either the two single crochets or the twisted double crochet one, are just for the first stitch of each row.
So if I'm crocheting from a pattern, supposing it's double crochet, and I want to use this method, should I leave off two or three chain stitches on the beginning row in order to use this method for my count to be correct? That's the only part that I'm not sure of. Thank you. Example the pattern calls for 23 chains and my first row is DC should I only make 20 chains? I hope my question is clear.
Yes, absolutely. You'll need to alter the starting chain to get the same number of stitches on Row 1 as the pattern calls for. And that number sometimes could be 2, 3, or 4 chains, depending upon how the designer wrote the pattern. Hopefully the pattern has a total stitch count at the end of Row 1 to help. Worse case, just do Row 1 the way the pattern is written and then use the straighter edge method for the remaining rows. It's unlikely Row 1 will be that noticeable in the end anyway.
With the first method i keep ending up with extra hard in the top of the double crochet. I dont know what im doing wrong with turning my hook around the extended stitch but its just unraveling itself and i cant pull the DC through it 😢
I find that the thumb needs to hold that yarn against the crochet hook tightly, like really tightly, and don't let go of the thumb part until almost the very end of finishing the stitch, otherwise it unravels. I show this starting at about 0:29 seconds into the video and don't let go until almost 0:52 seconds into the video.
🧠👍🧠👍🧠👍
