Yeah, I've always said that to my friends but they look at me funny (as most haven't even played SOF anyway, lol). Price's totally based on good old John's appearance, which was based on a real person too, he was actually that person. Fun thing is in multiplayer the John Mullins skin was used mostly by new players who didn't know how to switch, or really good players who wanted to take the piss and make other players angry and wonder "who is it, omg how's he so good?" , hah yeah, good times.
I kind of understand because it would feel weird getting your kid a game with Blood in the title (even though Soldier of Fortune is just as violent haha).

Still feels more brutal and violent than any modern shooter out there, where any brutality against another human being you can see is limited to some mild cutscenes. You should totally review Singularity. It was Raven Software's last game before they were restructured as a Call Of Duty Support team. I reviewed it on my channel, and I even managed to interview a developer who worked on it.
@DamageCase563 Show a little respect, son. They got the whole weird time signature and djent thing going, before it was cool and every third metal band started doing it. They're not necessarily my favorite band either but their influence is still heard throughout metal all the time.
@DamageCase563 Alrighty, then. I'll just dismiss what you're saying. You're either ignorant or an edgelord suffering from elitism syndrome. You should have responded with OK boomer, that would have at least got a chuckle out of me.
Me and a buddy used to bootleg Dreamcast games, and that was how I first played this game. Even though it had like 10 min load times, I loved it. That first level in the subway got played like 40 times that year.
The best reviewer on TH-cam! Played this back in the day on the dreamcast which lets just say wasn't a great port but I absolutely loved it and still have it in my collection!
Hey guys, just a little FYI; If you are planning to play the Dreamcast version, make sure you play it from a GDEMU. As it DRASTICALLY cuts down on loading times! It brings it down from a 2.5 min load per levels to 10 seconds flat! MUCH BETTER! Also, it doesn't hurt to play on an overclocked Dreamcast as it makes some sections which have slight slowdown smooth like butter. Furthermore playing in 480P on VGA is recommended as well. It makes the game way better and how everybody should play it if on the Dreamcast.
I recently tried to bring up childhood memories and play this masterpiece again. Unfortunatelly framerate turned out to be very low in open areas. My PC is not high-end, but it definetly should not have problems with graphics from 2000. Well done gog. Upd: so i found the way to fix it. Go to \Base\. Create or edit autoexec.cfg. Add gl_dynamic 0 and save. And run Compatibility mode (Windows 7) Hope it helps.
gl_dynamic 0 also disables flag light gl_dlightintensity. If you ever get on a server or the forums, there is help still, not many players, scroll up for links to patches needed to see and join servers and map packs ;) For "newer" OSs, all that stops installation/ loading is ref_gl.dll
Remember this game and loved it. 1. Shotgun blast that rips limbs off. 2. Straight to action kind of stuff. 3. Immersive intro that just gets you into "Alright, we're on! Get ready!" state. Will get it on gog to bring back memories. Hopefully it will run on my low budget laptop.
"When you say Raven software most people are going to think of the Call of Duty games but chadgamers are also going to remember they worked on some of the best first person shooters ever made."
I remember playing SoF2 when I was a kid... When they first introduce the OICW at the test range I somehow glitched it out to keep the gun. Then I fired the grenades into the briefing room, and yea all of those assholes giving you briefings between missions were fully modeled. The crazy part is that the game knew that the characters were dead so it didn't initiate their voice overs... So it was the funniest/most disturbing damn thing to see John having a conversation with a bunch of mangled bodies around a table.
I'm surprised you did not mention the customizable difficulty options, including the sound meter that can spawn waves of enemies if you make too much noise. Also, I always enjoyed seeing the remaining bullets in the SMG's magazine and how it reflects how much you used up.
You should also take a longer look at Singularity, hell why not all Soldier of Fortune games if your already going down memory lane. For those who don't know Singularity was the last Raven Software game, before they where sent to the CoD gulags from which there is no escape.
He already reviewed all SOF games, and singularity. So your wish is granted. Watch his SOF2 video to get rage baited.. then his follow up SOF2 video after we yelled at him for years saying he was wrong lmao.
The moment you said you highly recommended this game early in the video, I paused, and looked it up on Steam. Then came back and clicked the moddb link you shared. Thank you so much. :) Can't wait to give this a go! Love your reviews.
Man I remember living this game back in the day when I was a kid. I had a few games for PS2 but most I rented from the nearby Hollywood Video. We would ride our bikes like 3 miles to the Tanasbourne shopping center to look at games to rent. Didn’t cost that much. Tanasbourne is like a giant strip mall, with shopping islands and apartments interspersed for like a couple square miles. I remember renting this game for multiple weeks, playing something else for a few months and then heading back down to Tanasbourne with my friends to rent it again, and then get Jack in the Box and skate around there a bit. The 4 player on my PS2 was the key to the fun here. Similar to Time Splitters 1 and 2
I know a lot of people say they feel bad that they're "stuck" working on cod games but... Man, idk. They're working on the biggest fps franchise in history, that's a pretty huge thing for them. Regardless of your feelings on cod that's such an amazing business opportunity, and honestly I'm just happy for them.
In my opinion after ID Software, Raven is the best developer studio for FPS games.Such a shame Woflenstein and Singularity wasn't that successful and they are making Call of Duty games
@@chrism1518 yeah Monolith with Blood and F. E. A. R. is on the top too, but for me Raven is like a little brother of ID, back in the day they were working closely together as they were used IDtech engines plus ID license too.
A pity New Colossus was such a waste of potential. Badly optimized, too short, with some really fucking annoying characters. It didn't help that your ammo carrying capacity was too fucking low.
He’s playing a censored Australian version. Check out a different video of this game- it looks like he hasn’t experienced the actual model destruction. He’s comparing it to perfect dark.
How is it possible that among all the (totally justified) praise for the heavy MG you fail to mention it has a goddamn WP grenade launcher as alt fire?! (Also, what´s the game shown at 1:29 please?)
Quick use items were in the Build engine trilogy weren't they? Granted not quick throwing grenades but binding other inventory items to their own keys was a thing.
I loved this game. BEFORE THEY PATCHED IT. I can tell based on the minimizing of gore that you are playing the patched version or SOF GOLD. A small caliber handgun blew people’s brains out. Much more graphic than blowing their head entirely off. A shotgun blast exposed intestines and a Desert Eagle wound amputated body parts. The patch ruined the AI and also messed up amputations. I also find it interesting that this games main antagonist were a white supremacist Afrikaner group. Nowadays they try to make the antagonist completely benign. When a special forces soldier killed you they actually don’t want you to suffer because you make a lot of noise moaning and screaming. In real life they shoot you dead on the spot instead of letting you linger, suffer and warn other people that you’ve been killed.
"Games today are just too political and virtue signaling to left wingers!!!" *John Mullins blasting a neo-nazi's head clean off with a desert eagle in the distance*
I know you're probably sick of randos like me recommending games by now but please hear me out on this: There's a game called Roboquest, just hit early access on steam, and for the limited content it's got atm I think it's really decent and has the chance to be something excellent; it's a lot like gunfire reborn without the grindy out of run levelling and as I genuinely think your video on gunfire reborn helped make that game the success it is I feel that roboquest may also deserve that chance as an arguably somewhat rival to it. I bought it on a whim the other day because it looked fun and have just really enjoyed the gunplay of it and all that and I think you might too and I guess recommending it to go under your scrutiny is my way of seeing if I can help the devs out a bit, you could hate it so that coud backfire but....well just know I, some rando on the internet, think it might be worth a try :)
This was fun when it came out. I miss the jumps/revolutions we got back there in systems and games. The changes were incredible. We went from Pong/Atari, to the NES, to the Genesis/SNES, etc. Big, Big changes. Now we have endless sequels and no changes in hardware/software for 8-10 years. It’s nothing like we used to experience.

I'll always love when you talk about shotguns in games. It's also my favorite in-game weapon and the one from SOF is truly one of the best if not the best of all time.
many hours of good memories playing this game!! My favorite thing to do was to wack on the godmode cheat, crank the level on the hardest difficulty, and make the most noise possible, the more noise you made the more enemies spawned, therefore making more noise, The good old shotgun was the best for that. i think i spent an hour once on the first level in the subway just mowing down hundreds stuck on the staircase.

I can’t believe it’s been so long since the first soldier of fortune review, you’re still my gold standard reviewer tho keep it up brotha!
The HMG and its shooting was the best thing ever. The sound while holding down mouse1 as the screen started to shake. Pure awesomeness.
I had the ps2 version lol it was still good and "gory"
Me and a buddy used to bootleg Dreamcast games, and that was how I first played this game. Even though it had like 10 min load times, I loved it. That first level in the subway got played like 40 times that year.
When I hear Raven software, the first game that comes to mind is Jedi Knight II myself
That, and Return to Castle Wolfenstein.
@@CantankerousDave They didn't make RTCW
Heretic. I’m old 😂
Definitely Jedi Knight II for me. that game had it all
The best reviewer on TH-cam! Played this back in the day on the dreamcast which lets just say wasn't a great port but I absolutely loved it and still have it in my collection!
I still can remember vividly playing the demo of SoF back in the day and what a impact it made on my younger self....big fan of Raven Software
I have been with you since you had just a few hundred subs, and I always knew you deserved an audience and I'm glad you have one now.
Yeah that Mac-10 was definitely the best sounding suppressed firearm in a videogame.
I guess it was closest to sounding like supressed weapong IRL
That Time Splitters clip sent me into a nostalgia hole, thanks.

@@Mad_Dog_of_the_Regime that's okay. *Sniff*
Fun fact: SoF was my first game that took 1GB (give or take) on my HDD. That was ... a lot ... back then.
"I kinda wonder how good his 3rd base game is..." These are the comments I come to your reviews to hear.
Funny you mentioned Escape from New York as Raven made a similar game in Take No Prisoners
We never did get an official game. There was one in development for the original Xbox but it was cancelled.
It makes the game way better and how everybody should play it if on the Dreamcast.
when i saw the raven software logo on the COD trailer i got a hit of nostalgia from SOF days. Good times, must of sparked something in you too.
Eriecartel Shame they've become Activision's bitch...
Cpt. Shmitt i never said id buy the new game 😂 even if that may be true hopefully itll be an ok game
And run Compatibility mode (Windows 7)
Hope it helps.
gl_dynamic 0 also disables flag light gl_dlightintensity. If you ever get on a server or the forums, there is help still, not many players, scroll up for links to patches needed to see and join servers and map packs ;)
For "newer" OSs, all that stops installation/ loading is ref_gl.dll
You forgot to mention the Raptor SMG see through magazine. Where you can see how many bullet you still have. This was an amazing first back then.

1. Shotgun blast that rips limbs off.
2. Straight to action kind of stuff.
3. Immersive intro that just gets you into "Alright, we're on! Get ready!" state.
Will get it on gog to bring back memories. Hopefully it will run on my low budget laptop.
Gman why is this unlisted? It only appears on the Raven software playlist but not on your actual channel.
It’s out now
I hadn't made it public at that point.
Every time I visit my parents' house, I ALWAYS play first Soldier of Fortune on my old PC in my free time. IT never gets and never will get old.
why cant ya just take that pc home? lol
Mullins reloaded a shotgun next to a woman once.
Word is, she's still screaming in delight.

Goldeneye 64 and Perfect Dark did too.

I loved Singularity. Basically Bioshock in the USSR. Great game.
Singularity really hit home for me.
He already reviewed all SOF games, and singularity. So your wish is granted. Watch his SOF2 video to get rage baited.. then his follow up SOF2 video after we yelled at him for years saying he was wrong lmao.

Similar to Time Splitters 1 and 2
What’s the name of the game at 1:31?
TimeSplitters: Future Perfect
I know a lot of people say they feel bad that they're "stuck" working on cod games but... Man, idk. They're working on the biggest fps franchise in history, that's a pretty huge thing for them. Regardless of your feelings on cod that's such an amazing business opportunity, and honestly I'm just happy for them.
In my opinion after ID Software, Raven is the best developer studio for FPS games.Such a shame Woflenstein and Singularity wasn't that successful and they are making Call of Duty games

Nah, Monolith is number 2 just because of Blood alone. They only don’t surpass ID because, well, ID making fucking Doom.
@@Elyseon New Colossus was made by Machine Games. I really liked the New Order and Old Blood, but after they just ruined it

This was the first review of yours that I had watched all the way back when you had 13k subs, and when you were gggmanlives
"Games today are just too political and virtue signaling to left wingers!!!"
*John Mullins blasting a neo-nazi's head clean off with a desert eagle in the distance*

The game that introduced me to dismemberment , such fond memories
I'd like a remake of this game with modern graphics and shit
I remember playing this back in 99' on my dreamcast.
I was 6 years old and was completely terrified at the gib system, couldn't ended back then.
I love this channel, GmanLives shows me tons of good games that my low end pc can run. Thanks man :D
I remember this game so well. In hindsight the character is a Proto type of what we know as Captain Price.
am always on the search of older games i haven't played, thanks
This was fun when it came out. I miss the jumps/revolutions we got back there in systems and games. The changes were incredible. We went from Pong/Atari, to the NES, to the Genesis/SNES, etc. Big, Big changes. Now we have endless sequels and no changes in hardware/software for 8-10 years. It’s nothing like we used to experience.
Agreed, the new Xbox and PlayStation feel like just minor upgrades rather than massive leaps forward.
Revolutions in video games doesn't come from hardware and software, but rather in terms of design, concept, innovation, etc.
It's crazy how smooth the weapon animations looked

It shares 1st place with F.E.A.R. shotgun.
@@cor.tenebrarum omg yes, so true, F.E.A.R. shotgun is awesome as well.
many hours of good memories playing this game!!
I fucking love the burp cuts they always catch me off guard
I liked the MAC when it appeared in Escape from NY, since then, it's an icon to me
What a coincidence! I was just watching your old video, just yesterday, how funny is that?
