    Awesome presentation! I purchased an LMT Sharpshooter within the last month based on this overview. It is my first AR-10, and my first LMT product, and you are absolutely correct about the quality! Plus, as an AUG user, having an easy to remove barrel is a major plus. 🙂

    21:17 The SAS initially approached Colt with the requirements for a rifle, however Colt were unwilling to adjust tooling for such a small order as they were churning out M4s. This is why they approached Diemaco who were happy to oblige.

    • @SmallArmsSolutions
      @SmallArmsSolutions  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think you confused the L129A1 with the L119A1. But Colt Defense could not do the contract primarily due to Bankruptcy

    • @PaddyInf
      @PaddyInf ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @SmallArmsSolutions I know. My point was in reference to your comment about the SAS approaching Diemaco for their weapon.

    • @SmallArmsSolutions
      @SmallArmsSolutions  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Colts willingness was irrelevant due to them being in bankruptcy within 10 years. But I agree, Colt was not into making special guns. However, I think they would have made the exception for something as prestigious as SAS. But there was no choice. Diemaco in the end, was the far better choice for them on many different levels.

    I want one of these so much. I have been saving for over a year and I'm doing my research on High End 308/7.62mm rifle. I have been looking at LMT, Knights Armament, LWRC , Daniel Defense, LaRue Tactical, Noveske, Aero Precision and Heckler&Koch. I'm leaning hard towards LMT because it seems to have the best balance of what I want. There are just so many quality manufacturers on the market. Great review as always. The 2 versions the UK uses is the Sharpshooter (UK name for a DMR) as shown in the video and the SSW (Sniper Support Weapon) carried by the No.2 in a sniper team. It has the 3-12 S&B scopes they took off their 7.62mm L96AW's when they were replaced by the .338 L118's and has a suppressor fitted. Post Afghanistan the SSW isn't very common for some reason.

      I prefer heavier pewpews to lightweight specifically for that reason. 85% of 1st shots in high-stress situations miss (adrenaline, shock, rushing to action, etc). Reacquisition of target quickly is crucial.
      Glad to know the Brits think like I do. I also prefer 1980s-1990s semi-auto hammer-fired pistols for carrying for the same exact reasons. In this era of lightweight polymers, I seem to always be the odd man out.

    I bought a Barrett REC 10 2 months ago and have used it out to 800yds averaging 1 to 1.5 moa depending on the wind. I used a Leupold vari x2 6x 308 175gr Sierra. This rifle is very light and for a 16" rifle is very accurate. I would like to see you review this rifle. Average velocity is 2500 fps with match 175 and 2600 fps with Malaysian ball ammo. Malaysian shot very well out to 600yds. Great videos.

    Spoke to some of my pals who where issued the Sharpshooter and in the start they had issues, with extractions where the claw was breaking, and also the rear of the spent cases being ripped off and thus leaving a casing in the chamber, not sure how many did this but it seemed to be an issue at first.

    I’ll give you a hint, in Special Forces, a barrel only goes through one contact, then it’s changed out, if there is a buffer in the weapon, ditto, then the weapon is taken through an operation rehearsal where 400 to 700 rounds are put through it, if it’s ok it goes out on the op.

      Don't think it outclasses the SR25 in terms of accuracy, reliability, or durability... Does have a few more capabilities with the monolithic rail and user-changeable barrels, though. And they have SR25 BCG's.

    • @epiccowboymemes2042

      @@epiccowboymemes2042 Monolithic rail makes sense in this application, for both optics and IR designators. As for the G28, ehh... I've seen and heard of too many problems with the 416/417 to believe that, every single problem I've experienced with KAC weaponry has been third party parts, (Non-KAC suppressors, especially) or gov't spec fuckery. The M110 was fucked by the morons that wrote the specs; no adjustable comb on the stock, and HPT on ALL bolts, despite protests from Knights' engineers. That's where the problems with their bolts come from. The suppressor on that thing is... It's alright, especially for when it was being deployed, but it's not as good as what's available today.
      Sig might be able to make that durability claim with the SPEAR, seeing as it's designed around their 277 Fury, and their intended goal is to have both the MCX and SPEAR last 20K rounds with zero breakages. They're damn close to that with the Virtus, if not already there.

    19:55 "18 Inch is the ideal barrel length for a .308. (…) So, once your propellant is burnt, by having a longer barrel you are not gaining anything, basically you’ll have the bullet start to slow down.”
    The point with the burn duration is right, but the acceleration part is not correct. After the powder is burnt, there is much pressure left to accelerate the bullet. That is the main reason to have 20 inch or even 24 inch barrels for long ranges with .308: higher bullet velocity.
    The 16..18 inch threshold for acceleration is for pistol cartridges.
    Compare at "ballistics by the inch"

    Would be nice to have a 6.5 mm barrel, say 260 Rem or 6.5 Creedmoor to give 300 Win Mag type trajectory and a bit more reach. It's interesting that it beat out the H&K417 which I understand the Australians use as their DMR. Question - I've heard it said that the direct impingement system used in the L129 is slightly more accurate than the short stroke piston system used in the H&K417, is that true and if so why?

    • @avocares
      @avocares 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Generally speaking DI systems are more accurate than short stroke systems, which are both more accurate than long stroke systems. Again generally speaking, there are always exceptions and one can build a very accurate M1/M14 (with enough time or money).
      The reason is that the more mass that is reciprocating the less consistent each cycle and lockup is going to be. Consistency is the key to accuracy and the less moving parts the better. That is why the most accurate bencrest rifles don't even have ejectors, as even the spring pressure from plunger style ejectors is another variable that can cause inconsistency.
      Back to the mass of moving parts. If you built a perfectly tuned M1/M14 shooting 3/4 moa 10 shot groups, then fired 2000 rounds, and another set of 10 shot groups it would most likely be over 1 moa because wear in the system would create inconsistencies which would lead to worse accuracy. The gun could be tuned back up, but it's not a consideration for DI systems which would not be as effected by wear in the gas system.
      Unless your able to use the rifle to it's potential and shoot enough rounds it's not a issue. Just fun facts about different rifle systems. 99+% of people won't see the accuracy degradation from one system or the other, and starting accuracy is all down to how much time and effort it put into manufacturer of the rifle to begin with.

    • @awsomedude9111
      @awsomedude9111 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Even though this comment is 4 years old, LMT now has multiple calibers for their barrels.
      Piston systems have moving parts and created a disturbance that you wouldn’t get from a bolt action.
      The Serbu BFG 50 is an example of how the gas system is better In Accuracy than Barrett’s cycling barrel, but is less reliable.
      AK47 is another example of inaccurate piston system.

    Did you drop the bolt intentionally when you re-inserted the barrel or did the barrel insertion itself trigger the bolt to drop? • @stevewilson7819
      @stevewilson7819 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Adam Grantham We have one these. The bolt catch, or latch is the same as any M4 with regards to the way it functions. The bolt going home was inadvertent. When I reinstall the barrel I move it until the front screw fits back in its hole. I close the bolt, and pull forward on the barrel. Then torque the bolts to spec. There isn’t much movement once you put the front screw in, but there is a tiny amount. After I fire about 10rounds I go back and check the torque on the bolts again.

    It's an AR-308. Not sure why you would need to have a 5 minute barrel change on a rifle like that. Frankly that took way too long for a heavy fire situation. Plus under fire and under pressure dinging up the gas tube while trying to fish it in can and will cause gas flow issues. It took you 3 or 4 tries to get it in the hole and your just making a casual video.
    It's not a machine gun and shooting a rifle like that in full auto is a waste of ammo.
    My Aero M5E1 build with a criterion barrel is lighter. It's 11.5 pounds with a bipod and a loaded 20 round mag in it.
    I like the surefire set up at the tip though. I'm pretty sure I've seen the 4 prong on optics planet. As far as I know there is no noticeable improvement over the 3 prong. That's why the 3 prong is still so popular. Especially if you live in Texas.
    Armalight is squared off in the back and that's an AR10. AR10 is not a generic term for all AR-308 builds.
    I wish I would have put a nice LVPO on it. Good LVPOs have a forgiving eye relief and with a throws lever you can bring the power down on the fly and use it like a dot with both eyes open.
    Eotech's 1 -10 LVPO is crazy good. It's not as expensive as that trigocon.
    That rifle at 16 inches to me doesn't make any sense. It's probably over priced due to that optic and "quick" changeable barrel. Also 18" for the 308 is the sweet spot with 168 grain. 20" barrels for 308 get substantially heavier without enough ballistic improvement to justify it.
    That rifle is cool but more of a novelty in my honest opinion. If your going to go through the trouble to pack extra barrels in a bulky case that cartridge doesn't make any sense to me.
    Don't get me wrong because I absolutely love 308. It's just that my rifle is good for CQB if need be and 1500+ meters in the right hands. My point is you don't need all the extra proprietary bs that comes with that rife and I don't like the chosen optic for it. Love the trigicon just not on a would be sniper 308 with a 16" barrel. 🤔
    The British... No wonder we were able to win our freedom without the French. 😂🤣😅

      The L129A1 was procured as a sharp shooter weapon. It was never intended to replace the SA80. It is issued at a 1 per section level to infantry. As for what will replace the SA80 - There aren't any plans to replace it for a long time, and trials haven't been announced. I wouldn't be betting the house on what is chosen when it does happen. We have a history of choosing something unexpected. Everyone thought the 417 was guaranteed to be taken on as a sharp shooter as we had a relationship with HK but we chose the LMT. It was widely accepted we would take the P226 as the standard pistol as it was in use as a UOR and with SF but we took the Glock 17 etc.
