    great overview of the rifle. The M110s I used in the military were accurate for sure. Ours were a little less reliable than the SCAR Hs though but it's a small sample size. I'd feel confident saying both are more accurate and reliable than the M14s though.

      With Fed 308 GMM 168 you can get between 1 and 1.5 MOA. Which is not bad for a battle rifle with a 16 inch, chrome lined lightweight barrel.
      It’s also a whole lot lighter. 600 yards is about it’s max effective range on a man sized target with match ammo, and a good scope. Muzzle velocity with old style Fed 168 will be around 2600. The new production stuff is about 100 FPS slower.

    It seems to be, based on this channel, 5 basic modes of thought when it comes to how the military chooses firearms among other things: 1. Tradition especially if it can be linked to WW2 2. What’s cheapest 3. Whatever Congress tells them to keep jobs in their districts 4. Eh just break out the old stuff we got in storage 5. And rarest of all, what actually meets the needs of the troops in the field

    The SR-25, the best bolt action rifle I ever owned; to quote a sniper school instructor. He bought his in 1995. He finally gave up and sold it. You have to wonder if the issue he was having has do to the plastic guide rod that was used in place of a buffer system that the M110 uses?
    The barrels Remington supplied Knight were blanks for the Army M24 SWS. That was after Remington started producing their own barrels for the M24. The first 200 M24’s were made with cut rifled barrels made by Mike Rock. Those first guns were later rebarreled with new production Remington barrels. I fired M24, Initial Production Test Rifle #2 when I was stationed at the Rock Island Arsenal in the late 1980’s. Rifle #1 was in the John Browning Museum at the RIA. The informationabout the barrels came from Mike Rock when I met him in the mid 90’s. That was when he was producing barrels for the Armalite AR-10T.
    The Marine Corp M40A1’s used Atkinson, Hart, and later mainly Scheinder barrels which were all 24 inch 1X12 twist. The M24 SWS used 26 inch, 1-11.25 twist barrels with 5R rifling.

    I owned a Knights Armament SR 25 which I purchased in Helena ,Mt. in 1996. I later picked up a Springfield M1A Loaded. I also had a DS Arms . Those are all gone now but I have a Smith and Wesson Optic Ready carbine now. I put a A2 stock on it and will test it using the lead weight in the stock compartment. I think it will shoot groups good enough for an old blind guy.

    The AR platform really is that “universal rifle” that every military has been looking for forever. M4s for close range/urban combat, M16s for urban/suburban/medium range combat, M110s for medium to long ranges. Full auto M16s or M110s with drums could be SAWs.
    It really is the Carbine, Rifle, DMR, and SAW all in one platform

    • @muddyhotdog4103
      @muddyhotdog4103 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Same goes for the Akm system.. There's short barrel sub machine guns and long/short carbines, as well as light machine guns/saw in the RPK.. The Romanians even made a DMR version with the PSL in 762x54r.. I wouldn't count the Dragunov as it's a completely different operating system being short-stroke piston vs a standard AK long-stroke system (which the PSL has a long stroke). There are even pistol caliber shooting versions of aks like with the ar15.. Albeit the ar15/ar10 is more suitable for accuracy for dmr's.

    I was right with you up to the "John Browning's got nothing on Gene Stoner". Might want to re-think that. JUST the M2 ALONE is reason enough! Browning designed it before Stoner was born....still in use today I do believe. The issue with making "upgrades" to a system that already does the job is usually MONEY. Of course Knights wants to make upgrades to a rifle that has an existing contract....that's REVENUE! Let's not pretend Knights is this altruistic company that recommends these things ONLY out of a desire to improve the weapon. That said, nice vid and love the M110!

    The ones we received and currently use in the marines are very hit or miss
    I've gotten lucky and have had m110s issued to myself in multiple units that were very accurate and reliable. But have also seen just as many that wouldnt hold anything less than a 1.5 inch group at 100m. A lot have had cycling issues and trigger problems. Have also seen a good amount fire multiple rounds at once. Zero shifts and cold bore shots are usually nothing to write home about either. Across the board they couldnt hold a candle to the m40A5. Now with the A6 out it's a little more comparable accuracy wise, for some reason the m40a6's aren't overall as accurate as the A5s were (at least from my experiences) and with the inception of the MK13 the M40A6 is damn near obsolete 3 years after its initial fielding outside of training and certain urban environments where a short suppressed bolt gun is still appreciated, can someone say XM3. Anything 800m and in is definitely realistic for the m110. I have an appreciation for the good ones out there but the lack of QC we've experienced leads me to favor my bolt gun still. Some design features a lot of us were never fond of is mostly the suppressor mounting system and the ambi controls (tends to snag on gear and eject magazines) I'd never trade my bolt gun for the m110. But as a sniper support weapon/rapid engagement precision rifle it definitely meets the need but is quickly becoming outclassed in 2019 which is expected. There's some snipers not particularly fond of the m110 being there's still bad guys alive because the gun failed at the worst possible time, not my experience but another man's. I've yet to see a gas gun of any kind (KAC, Larue, JP, etc) outperform a well built bolt action rifle dedicated for precision shooting in accuracy or consistency of accuracy.

      The active duty Marine tankers went into theater with M60A1’s. The M3A1 SMG’s were not part of the SL-3 gear for that tank. They had M16A2’s and M9’s. The Marine Corps never got the high tech M60A3. Delta Company 4th Tank Bn which was a Reserve Unit had transitioned to the M1A1 before deploying. They were loaned Army M1A1’s when they arrived in Saudi. The active duty side got the M1A1 tanks after they got back. That came from a team mate on the USMCR Rifle Team. He served with 1st Tank Bn during Desert Storm. When they crossed the Line of Departure they were in M60A1 RISE / PASSIVE Tanks. That tank used an optical range finder, and had passive night vision, and appliqué armor. The Saudi armored units had newer and more capable M60A3’s. He mentioned that they ran across one sitting along side the MSR. Being good Marines they promptly cut the lock on the turret hatch, and proceeded to rat fuck it for anything useful!
      The British forces that deployed during Desert Storm had the L85, and LSW. The SAS units used M16A1’s. There may have been some British Units with L1A1’s. I know the Royal Marines that attended the Marine Corps Eastern Division Matches at Camp Lejeune in the spring of 1990 used L85’s. And they were a piece of crap then. They couldn’t even shoot US M855 ammo because it was to hot for the receiver. They had to ship over their own issued ammo for the Matches. They were still using Browning 9MM Highpower pistols at that time. Those were pretty decent.

      17B's were issued M110's? Interesting. The 3.5-10x Mark 4 on the M110 uses the TMR, which is FAR superior to the standard mil-dot like the one in the M3A we used on our M24's as each element of the reticle is much finer allowing for better range estimation, etc.
      BTW, the two M110's we had in my section when we deployed to 🇦🇫 in 2008 we serial numbers 36 and 42.

    Another very good presentation with the critical background information.
    From the information you have supplied and consistent with what vets have experienced in the field, the folks in the 5-sided building do not want to be winners.
    Every generation of soldiers train hard but they are not given the best tools of the trade. Combat produces many Lessons Learned, and it reasonably follows that weapons' performance can be greatly improved. But the logistic folk resist change and some manuals may have to be amended. Change is the only constant in life. However in the 5-sided building it seems that politics and kick-backs are to order of the day.
    My SF Commando unit used the M110 in the DMR role and the .338 Lapua & .50 HMG for the more intimate applications. The M110 is popular in the overwatch role during a compound clearance because the assault team can instigate multiple insurgent responses inside the compound that a semi auto rifle is best suited for. I do like the bolt release, makes for slick drills; certainly better than the bolt-on BAD. Thanks again for your valuable contribution, Greg

    The info on the M118 is a bit off. The M118 round started its life as the M118 National Match. It was made by Lake City AAP. It used the 173gr FMJ BT projectile and was packed in white boxes with red and blue lettering with the word Match on the side. The case head was marked Match. It was intended to be used in NM 14’s for competition. The projectile was carried over from the .30 caliber M72 National Match round. It’s performance left something to be desired by competitive shooters. The projectiles performance was inferior to Sierras MK BTHP’s. Production of that stopped in the early 80’s.
    It was replaced by the M852 National Match cartridge. That used the Sierra 168 MK bullet. It was packed in brown boxes. The case head was marked Match, and it had a knurled ring around the case about 1/4 inch up from the base. It’s primary use was Competitive shooting. In the early 1990’s JAG lawyers reversed their ruling on this round and said we could shoot enemy combatants with it. But it’s effective range through M40A1, or M24 SWS was still about 800yards. Could you kill people beyond that range with it? Yeah. But it wasn’t a 1 shot, 1 kill situation. It was more like small caliber indirect fire. The spotter was your F.O. He help adjust your fire on to the target. At 1000 yard your rounds were moving around trans sonic speed depending on conditions. At 1000 yards the holes in the target were elliptical because it’s trajectory was that high.
    M118 Special Ball became the standard issue round for snipers. Since lawyers in the 80’s said it was illegal to shoot enemy combatant’s with hollow point projectiles. That changed in the early 90’s. Special Ball used standard Lake City brass and the ubiquitous 173gr FMJ BT projectile. And it still shot like crap.
    Marine Scout Snipers wanted something with better long range performance than the M852 Match round. That resulted in the M118 Long Range round being produced. It’s case head had L R along with LC and the year on manufacture stamped on it. It used the Sierra 175gr MK projectile.

I can still do amazing stuff with a full control Mauser style bolt rifle chambered in .300 Win Mag or .338 Lapua. Even my Belgian .30-06 Browning Safari Mauser action rifle is a very respectable rifle out past 600 yards. With the loads my father put in .30-06 800 yards + EASY. I disagree. This weapon didn't change many operators' opinions of whether or not semiautomatic rifles were a better fit for snipers than bolt action rifles. The nature of the Iraqi conflict shifted the role of sniping from two man teams stalking a target in an open field (traditional sniping) to marksmanship support roles in an urban area (closer to SWAT sniping). When our troops deploy for actual sniping missions, they take out the M2010, Mk21 PSR, and Mk13 Mod7 as the primary workhorses.

    It's almost perfect, one thing if I may, the forward assist isn't for jamming a round into the chamber. It's more for loading or cycling in silence. Spoken by someone who knows from experience. The specialists who used these would have known better. Stoner was a genius. He just never had to load or chamer check his designs danger close.

    • @SmallArmsSolutions
      @SmallArmsSolutions  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is a urban legend. You cannot load silent with a forward assist. Especially with the amount of force needed to get the extractor to snap over the rim of the cartridge case.

    • @KamronFultz
      @KamronFultz ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SmallArmsSolutions I hate to argue with one of my hero's, but loading with the forward assist is substantially quieter. I haven't had to do it often, but the necessity to chamber in silence has arisen. Not being allowed to load my rifle until ready to shoot for instance. The unfortunate result of following posted rules, and have had to silently chamber a round with many deer not only present but very close. If it weren't for the forward assist, getting the rifle into battery would have been impossible. I am afraid there is no denying experience on this one. The forward assist has a place on my AR. Maybe do a video on it and show a better way without the forward assist.

    Have you tried the Palmetto PA 10 gen 3? I was able to get one last month, November 2023 for 700 dollars. It shoots really well. Best group is 0.75 with 17 adjustable gas positions.
    Given that the Palmetto AR-10 is the most affordable, I think that it is going to become the most widespread. It will probably become the standard.

      Yes. The M110 (made by KAC) is going to be replaced by the M110A1 (collaboration between HK and Geissele) for both the Army and Marines. Navy is getting the SCAR's version, and Chair Force never had the M110.

    The bit about zero shift when removing and reinstalling the KAC Suppressor was contrary to what I had read. Supposedly it was so bad that the guys in theater had to leave them on because it took multiple rounds through the gun to get it to group, and only then could you really figure out what your zero was. They also didn’t like it because of its length. And they didn’t want to patrol with it on since that made the guy carrying it a priority target. And it was unwieldy. When you pull a suppressor off, remount it and shoot it they all shift a little bit. But the KAC was allegedly really bad.

Knight's delivered EXACTLY what the Army asked for. So as for false, i would say about 90% of what you heard and repeated.

    I know this is an old post, but I had a discussion way before this video with an AF reserve guy who supposedly had some "sniper" experience. He was complaining the SR25 was not reliable. I built a .308 off of the LR308 platform, due to the fact, I used a used parts that I bought from Ebay (when they still sold parts like that)and adjustable gas system, the worst I got from it was failures to eject, which I fixed with some tuning. With my kitchen gunsmith engineering, I'm able to make my 308 work for what I wanted it. I can't imagine Stoner with more resources and personnel couldn't make the SR25 work. Do you have any idea what this guy was talking about with the SR25? I feel that a few failures with SASS is outweighed by the fact its faster than a manual action, even then, sounds easy to fix.

    I’m going to have to respectfully disagree on your Browning vs Stoner comparison. Browning designed countless firearms, many of which saw long and distinguished careers as military weapons and the ma deuce, 1911, Hi Power and others are still fielded in many conflicts around the globe. Stoner was brilliant and far ahead of his contemporaries, but John Moses Browning’s entire history greatly overshadows Eugene’s two weapons systems. I say that with the utmost respect for the work of Stoner and his immense contributions to small arms development.

    • @SmallArmsSolutions
      @SmallArmsSolutions  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I would disagree. None of Brownings systems ever achieved the popularity of the Stoner systems. Look at the number of M16’s in military, LE and commercial service against the numbers of all other Browning weapons of the US? Not close. Commercial success! The AR15 has achieved more success commercially than the M1911. This is my opinion dude. The AR15/AR10 continues to gain popularity after 60 years, not loose like most all the Browning guns. His M2 is all that still sees service. Again, my opinion, i respect yours as well. I guess there is no definitive answer its on what your perspective and criteria for comparison is.

    • @johngalt234
      @johngalt234 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hansstrouf Two things:
      *_First._* You can't blame Stoner for the M16's growing pains. He stopped being involved in the project in 1959 when Armalite sold the design rights of both the AR10 and AR15 to Colt. The only military testing the AR15 had while Stoner was involved recommended that the Army more seriously consider looking at the AR15 as a replacement for the less reliable, more costly, and just as deadly M14. The only reason the Army didn't do so is because its Chief of Staff didn't want to have one caliber for general issue rifles and one for machine guns. He thought it would create a logistical nightmare. (This rejection is what led Armalite to sell the "unprofitable" designs to Colt.) What the Army with the M16 did in the 1960s is squarely the Army's fault. The Secretary of Defense took care of that issue in 1968. www.forgottenweapons.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/1959-Rifle-Squad-Armed-with-a-Light-Weight-High-Velocity-Rifle.pdf
      *_Second._* The AR10 and AR15 aren't Stoner's only designs, but you talk like they are. He was central to the AR3, AR5, AR7, AR9, AR10, AR11, AR12, AR15, AR16, AR18, AR180, Stoner 63, Ares LMG, Ares FMG, KAC LMG, SR25, SR15, and others. (Many external piston rifles-including the Sig MCX/MPX-borrow from the AR18.)
      Stoner definitely deserves a place in the Pantheon of gun designers. I merely question how high of a pedestal he deserves. He was the head of a design team, not the sole engineer. Chris Bartocci's comment that "John Browning has nothing on Gene Stoner" is absurd. Browning created his ideas from scratch. The tilt-locking barrel? All his and used in 99% of all pistol designs today. The M2 50BMG machine gun? Still kicking after 100 years and not project to leave service for at least another 50 years. The M1911? Worked well for 75 years as the primary sidearm of the US military, and it is still preferred by competition shooters for both speed and accuracy. The Browning Automatic Rifle? It created a whole category known as the squad automatic rifle that we still use today. The Browning A5? World's first semiautomatic shotgun. And I haven't even talked about the seven calibers he created or the twelve other handguns he designed or the four machine guns he made that are't used anymore or his work with pump/lever action rifles/shotguns.
