I just realized that the Leica SL is the same as the new L mount. Which means there already is a MF Speedbooster for the Panasonic S1 and the full frame Sigma we are all hoping for! :)
Mattias Burling and I own a Leica SL and will soon own a S1. Can’t wait to try out the adapter on both and see the difference of a few years in tech. Would u recommend the Hasselblad or Mamiya adapter? 🤔🤔
So Canon could just make a EOS R-MF body for $4,000 with 2 lenses and call it a day as everyone just hit up e-bay for old MF lenses and to fill out their Kit ........ Maybe pop out 2 or 3 more lenses over a few years and see like their 'M _' camera's line..... Canon could literally just add the EF & EF-S to all, Stop doing APS-C & Sell a FF & a MF line of bodies and Chill out ... I kind of agree that MF portrait photography is more than 50Mps. A Canon EOS RS or RS-R being more likely .
@@gearreallydoesntmatter Canon EOS R-MF would be 645 or at least could do 645, i forget the MF's Top 3 film formats. Where a 50Mps Canon EOS RS or RS-R would just be a Canon EOS 5DS or 5DS-R, EOS R mashup.
I have a Sigma SD Quattro, and since the Pentax K-mount is functionally the same as the Sigma SA-mount, that really opens up the number of lens adaptations available. I really like the idea of using medium format glass on the SDQ - and almost always shoot in SFD mode on a tripod anyway, so the result is very much like medium format. There are a few snags, however. One is the crop factor/ratio with the APS-C Foveon sensor, so everything becomes telephoto - and my personality is more wide-angle. An unexpected problem is (apparently) internal flare within the adapter, with the much larger image circle of the medium-format lens. On the Foveon that shows itself as a chartreuse-green flare on the image, which is very difficult to deal with in post. It varies with the exposure, and is difficult to predict (so you would work around it), and sometimes it isn't present at all. It was worst on the Kipon tilt-shift adapter (they make one from Hasselblad to SA/PK) and I think there were just too many hard internal surfaces which were dark-anodized, but it clearly wasn't non-reflective enough. I bought a straight Hasselblad to PK adapter, and is much improved, though the flare sometimes is still present. The viewfinder/display screen on the SDQ is just good enough to not be terrible, but not good enough sometimes to see the flare if it's minimal. As a result I haven't done much more with the medium-format lenses. Also, compared to recent Sigma ART lenses, they seem softer and less contrast-y. I have Pentax 645, Pentax 6x7, Mamiya 645 and Hasselblad. I originally got the Kipon tilt-shift adapter to try tilt-shift on the SDQ, and Hasselblad was the only mount offered. So that was a bust. I did find a used Rokinon 24mm f3.5 tilt-shift lens in PK mount, and functionally it works much better than the Kipon, with larger knobs (though still not as large as the equivalent Canon TS 24mm). The Rokinon has been disappointing in sharpness, with very noticeable 'smearing' around the edges. And tilt-shift generally is challenging to get really, completely sharp - especially on the SDQ 'just good enough' viewfinder, especially tilt. But even shift suffers from the weird unsharpness. Fun to play with, but I haven't gotten a shot I really like with it. From there, I've moved toward those ART lenses, which are also built much better than even the previous generation EX lenses. The sharpness and contrast is startling sometimes - and very satisfying. The large apertures allow full-frame-like bokeh and background blur, and the sharpness is amazing wide open. My landscape technique now is to use ART lenses and focus-stack each SFD image, though that can introduce areas of unsharpness in the final image, too, so it's not perfect. Large files sizes, though - each SFD (X3i) image is about 350mb, and it's a slow workflow, but that's my photographic fun, so not a problem. For me this is a hobby, and not a job, so I can try things and be inefficient. My workflow preference has always been a bit 'medium format', anyway. Thanks for the great videos, Mattias - much appreciated! -Tom
Update from today - after trying the Pentax 645 200mm f4 with SA/KP adapter, lots of green flare with the Sigma DP Quattro - but NO flare under the very same circumstances, same location, using a friend's Pentax K70. More research needed! But it is pointing to the Foveon sensor as the culprit. Can't wait to see your video on the full-frame Sigma L when it comes out! :) -Tom

Thanks for a very inspiring video, and for sharing these beautiful images! I would love to hear your thoughts on how the image quality of great (but old) Mamiya 645 and e.g. Hasselblad V mount lenses compares with the quality of new Canon RF glass on the EOS R? Perhaps you even have some images that can be used to compare them?
Hi Mattias! Thanks a lot for this review! I have the Kipon Baveyes focal reducer from Pentax 67 to Leica M. A few weeks ago I purchased a Canon RP. Now I can adapt my adapter with a Leica M to Canon RF adapter - and maybe later to Nikon Z mount with the appropriate adapter, because the Nikon Z6 is also on my radar screen. I purchased the Kipon Baveyes a year ago when the Canon RF or Nikon Z system wasn’t launched yet. I purchased it after I saw your first video with Kipon Baveyes. The Pentax 67 lenses are also of high quality and affordable! Best wishes, Ralf
Mattias Burling Yes, and with the Leica M mount on the rear of the Kipon Baveses, I could adapt it also to the Leica L mount, which the new Panasonic mirrorless full frame cameras have and the upcoming Sigma fullframe with Foveon sensor. The Leica M monument is very versatile.
Mattias Burling By the way if you have the Leica M mount you can purchase the Minolta M-Rokkor 4/90mm. A very small, affordable lens that I highly recommend with very good image quality! ;)
I could not find and answer to this important question until now: does the digital video stabilization works with the canon Eos R when adapting vintage lenses? Thanks.
Does the adapter/ focal reducer respect the total field of view of the medium format lens when projected on the FF 35mm sensor? That is not cropping whatsoever ? Do you think a medium format lens made for 6x9 would be also reduced such that is original field of view would be entirely recovered on FF ?
@@gearreallydoesntmatter I see. I'd hoped that, say, a 65 mm medium format would keep the same field of view comparable to a 28mm for FF, and thus the focal reducer would have the capacity to project just that same field of view on a FF sensor. Which means a reducer with 0,43 factor, probably much more optically complex. Thank you !
Nice review and great images. Would be glad if you kindly clarify few doubts - 1. Would it autofocus using the adaptor if the lens has autofocus motor(Zeiss Contax 645 80mm f2 for example) built-in? 2. How do you find the images 3-D pop compares in 645 film camera vis-a-vis full frame if adapted. Anyway, an excellent initiative from you beyond what(megapixel wars, speed etc) we see now a days.

This makes me want to explore bunch of other compact film cameras out there that people desperately want to get rid of..
Do those lenses also work with the medium format to sony e mount speed booster? And if so do you know of a fast medium format lens that is affordable? Aroun T1.2 and 1000-1500$? Thanks! Also why is adaptors one of the main selling points of mirrorless cameras?

You answered a question I have been having since that video, which medium firmat mount is the most adaptable one? Luckly enough a couple of weeks ago I nailed 2 dirt cheap Mamiya MF lenses on a combo. Anyway do you get some kind of flaring when closing the aperture to around f8 onward? I have some cheap mft reducers and I get that effect sometimes, depending on the Lens. I suspect that it is - besides the cheap optics- because the reducer lens surface facing the sensor is planar. Hey Mattias! I would like to know, if you use the 80mm with the focal reducer with the crop factor of 0,7, you have a 56mm right? I am wondering because in your video it's almost exactly the same point of view from your Canon 85mm
If its for medium format than Kipon is the only one there is, as far as I know. Metabones are very sharp wide open but Viltrox is sharper on all other apertures. Metabones also makes special versions for the BMPCC/BMCC that the others dont make. So as always, which is better depends :)

So with video and the format cropped down from full frame you put a speedbooster with a medium format lens on it and end up with a full frame ratio again? I kinda do the same thing with fuji though...
@@gearreallydoesntmatter The eos r has a 1.7 crop in 4k, though. 1.7 x 0.7 = 1,19. But I´m not that good in math and the optical logic behind it. Anyhow, I´m looking forward to the video centered review, as well as pretty much all of your videos anyways.
Doesn’t the EOS R have a 1,7 crop @ 4k Video? Because then I don’t see the point of using medium format lenses on it for video :D would result in a overall 1.2 crop Whish is less than full Firma
The Focus Guide works with manual glass on my RP, as long as the adapter has proper electronic communication with the camera. The Focus Guide is hugely more accurate that Peaking, but you are correct that magnification is the best tool. @@gearreallydoesntmatter
Let me without sleep... I watch maybe 30 videos from this chanel ( learn a lot). Can you make video for landscape photography, something budget camera for landscapes, lens on a budget... (only landscapes I don't care about video or year of production)
How is canon "alone in understanding" the fact that it doesn't have IBIS is a clear lack of understanding that not all their customers will only use canon glass
Mattias Burling I apologize if I misunderstood what you said. I get it that a camera isn't just IBIS, but it is a HUGE benefit to have when using adapted glass. A company that truly embraces adapting and one that is clearly better than the others based on my understanding of the quote, would have that feature.
Mattias Burling anything that reduces image noise would just be complimentary no? 4 stops from ibis, 2 stops extra from the lens, 2 stops better noise performance by improving the sensor, 2 stops by buying faster glass... I don't see how reducing camera shake and allowing you to reduce your shutter speed can ever be rendered obsolete. It would even be complimentary in some sort of image blending situation.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter it's tough. All mid range benros are horrible. I've experienced too many faults with manfrotto. The only small head that I can recommend is the velbon ph368, but that depends on the payload of your camera. Might be too heavy.. but it's definitely good having one of these around. Dirt cheap and SHOCKINGLY smooth
@@gearreallydoesntmatter if I'm correct, medium format will have a larger sensor, where lens by itself will not matter that much, apart from a different glass look (maybe).
@@gearreallydoesntmatter I am aware of that. But it's still a smaller sensor or film size so less resolution, tonality and colour depth. I shoot real medium format, 6x7. Sticking my Mamiya lenses on my Nikon even with a speedbooster (pretend they exist for this combo) won't make the Nikon MF
And I don't see the point of using just the lenses designed for the camera. That's the beauty of photography. there is no wrong or right, better or worse. Its all just a mix of subjectivity. Enjoy what you have :)

iv'e decided after watching all your eos r vids to choose to buy the canon eos r instead of the sony a7 ii just not straight away because they are $4500 here in australia, i'll take some time to save up and maybe in that time the price might come down a bit.
They are starting to show up used so prices are definitely coming down.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter just got make spec comparison between the EOS R and the EOS RP to make my final decision afterall i'm not a pro i'm just a passionate hobbiest.
Where is this beautiful city. Love the location and gunpowder.
Västerås, Sweden.

does anyone know of a focal reducer which allows use of meium format lenses on a nikon fx camera body?
Sorry, It's physically impossible.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter ah ok, how come?
@@gearreallydoesntmatter also, i recently read about getting increased coverage with fx lenses on fx bodies (with some vignetting ofcoarse)
www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3699113
do you know of a way i can use this technique with nikon fx lenses on a nikon fx body?
@@jamiebrownmaxwell No you cant. The flange distance on Nikon FX bodies is too long.
Kipon please make a Nikon F Focal Reducer for EOS-R Thanks.
Need that Pentax k1 review

Thanks for the info!
So with video and the format cropped down from full frame you put a speedbooster with a medium format lens on it and end up with a full frame ratio again?
I kinda do the same thing with fuji though...
No the video is Full Frame with a x0.7 reducer making it less cropped compared to FF.
Its x1 crop when shooting HD which means 1 x 0.7 = 0.7 :)
Why has nobody made the same video with the R5C yet?
which camera buy? eos R or Z6 ty much
I choose the EOS-R partly because of the reasons in my 5 Reasons video: th-cam.com/video/e_AWVCdgxNo/w-d-xo.html
Doesn’t the EOS R have a 1,7 crop @ 4k Video? Because then I don’t see the point of using medium format lenses on it for video :D would result in a overall 1.2 crop Whish is less than full Firma
Shooting 4K for professional use or TH-cam makes no sense imo. So no, the crop is x0.7.
You neglected to mention that the Focus Guide does not work with Kipon adapters.
It doesn't work with any manual glass so that's like not mentioning that there is no AF. Peaking and magnification is enough.
The Focus Guide works with manual glass on my RP, as long as the adapter has proper electronic communication with the camera. The Focus Guide is hugely more accurate that Peaking, but you are correct that magnification is the best tool. @@gearreallydoesntmatter
"hugely" by the focus point that is. Different tools, I prefer the peaking for everything accept video with focus by wire lenses.
Great video! Can't wait to see how this adaptor deals with the 4K crop factor.
What happened to your XH-1?
I couldn't get along with it for pro use. I much prefer the X-E3 and X-Pro2. So it had to go.
Let me without sleep... I watch maybe 30 videos from this chanel ( learn a lot). Can you make video for landscape photography, something budget camera for landscapes, lens on a budget... (only landscapes I don't care about video or year of production)
Any camera is good for landscape imo. Just buy whatever you can afford.
Do the Nikon review
What Nikon review?
With the adapter
@@maurolamarques2555 don't have the Nikon adapter or a Nikon camera. Sorry.
I don't want to be rude, but i'm honestly much more impressed by these giant Nintendo trophies you have :D !
Cant beat those canon colours.
True!
What are you even talking about
Hello my name Klaus and I have a bensi! Pretty awesome! Best regards
Isn't the whole point of a medium format is that you get the extra resolution/detail?
No.
1:11 beautiful
i LIKE THE ADAPTER WITHOUT INSIDE LENS, BECAUSE NO TRASH THE PURE IMAGE.
Lol
does it do video ??
Ok then im just second
How is canon "alone in understanding" the fact that it doesn't have IBIS is a clear lack of understanding that not all their customers will only use canon glass
Firstly, you miss quoted me. But to answer, there is more to a camera than IBIS. I will talk about it in an upcoming video.
Mattias Burling I apologize if I misunderstood what you said. I get it that a camera isn't just IBIS, but it is a HUGE benefit to have when using adapted glass. A company that truly embraces adapting and one that is clearly better than the others based on my understanding of the quote, would have that feature.
Not if it's made obsolete by other factors.
@@DrFearCo because of my first response, there is more to a camera than IBIS.
with same model for sony cameras it was not so buyed
Yes it was very buyed :)
Canon does NOT go full medium format. Just tricks.
Wow. Astute observation. 🙄
Yes it does :)

Mattias, your images are very beautiful. It's a shame your tripod head is a heap of shit. I love your pics, brethren
What compact and low weight tripod head should I use instead ? :)
If it doesn't fit in my shoulder bag it's garbage.
1000 Euro camera adapter? WTF? Norvegian price.
Wow, its like €350 on eBay. But Norway has always been like that.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter still way too expensive in my opinion.
@@NowyKurs Depends what you compare to. Compared to other digital medium format it's quite affordable.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter if I'm correct, medium format will have a larger sensor, where lens by itself will not matter that much, apart from a different glass look (maybe).
@@NowyKurs It is same difference as between APSC and full frame.
You can't make 35mm MF. It's film or sensor size. Just sticking on MF lenses doesn't make the photos MF.
Google speedbooster.
I shoot real MF as well and I don't agree with your point of view. For example MF has nothing to do with resolution So let's just agree to disagree.
Well it does for film at least! But yes not so much for digital though
@@jameslane3846 not for film either imo.
I don't see the point. Just use the lenses designed for the camera!
And I don't see the point of using just the lenses designed for the camera. That's the beauty of photography. there is no wrong or right, better or worse. Its all just a mix of subjectivity. Enjoy what you have :)
