    I'm Molly, a typical sushi, makeup, and fashion loving millennial girl who just so happens to be blind! I was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa at just 4 years old and began public speaking at age 5. I started just doing motivational speaking, but now I make videos and even model! Even though I can’t see, I know that there are bright spots in everything we face. Let’s find them together. 💕

    When prematching, my school considers preferences and deal breakers, but at the end of the day, preferences are low on the priority list. I know of one student who asked for a light colored dog as he could see the silhouette against the dark wood floor in the house. That request was granted and he was matched with a nearly white dog. Beyond the initial interviews the prematch is fairly final unless an issue arises during the first week of class.

    • @MollyBurkeOfficial
      @MollyBurkeOfficial  2 ปีที่แล้ว +160

      Same with Mira - they take your preferences into consideration when pulling dogs for you to try and when discussing your thoughts on each dog, but the gender, look, breed, etc. is lowest on the list when actually making the final decision!

      That was what my neighbour wanted too and his poodle is a light blonde/beige color much like a golden retriever and he needed a pretty tall dog with a higher shoulder height because he is a pretty tall dude himself so they tired to match that as best as they could.

      Part of it might be her real mood then and now. When she got Gallop, she had lost Gypsy suddenly, and it was her first time changing dogs. This time, she's been able to make the choice to retire Gallop and decide it's time for a new dog, and it's her second time changing guides. It seems like she simply is happier and less distressed now than she was then. Pretty sure she described being so upset the last time that she nearly left wtihout even completing training, because the emotion involved with getting a new dog after Gypsy's death was so hard.

      That's interesting; I took a very small amount of French in school so I'm by no means an expert, but her accent just sounds wrong to me, because I'm not familiar with it. Because usually second language french learners will much more have the France accent. Molly really says the québécois "r" de right way. Like in the command "reste" (stay), she clearly uses the r like we french talker do, it's more crisp and not round or rolling (like in the words round or rolling 😂). Anyway, she still has work to do, but to me and to the dogs, she is really clear in most of her commands 😊

    • @nextupnow
      @nextupnow 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Very interested to understand this! You are talking about an upside of the the dog already being pick for you, correct? I wouldn’t imagine that would feel like being a part of the decision as a team, but I have no experience with the process. Would you be open to explaining more?

      @@nextupnow Aww. I am so sorry. I mistyped! Thank you for commenting so I could fix it. I meant that not pre-matching and the way Mira treats the matching process is very inclusive. Molly even knows the statistics of how the dogs are placed. Lifestyle, environment, personality, all of it. At the school I attend, we are told personality, pace and pull. I’d like to say more goes into The Seeing Eye’s process of placing a dog, but as a student there, I don’t know.

      As someone with a service dog (he does guiding, but he's not a guide dog. His main job is seizure alert and mobility assistance), I must say the preference thing was really hard for me. I have always had a preference for male dogs and just couldn't see myself with a female (I did work with a female in competition rinks and I loved her so much, but I just generally do better with males). I also wanted a specific colouring and height and so on. The unknown was so hard for me and all the stress it brought made it worse. In the end I did get my male dog, but I didn't get my (back then) colour preference nor height preference. I was a bit disappointed at first, but my service dog was 100% the right choice and I fell in love so hard. I couldn't have been an as effective team with any of the other dogs lined up (3 other males and 2 females). From that experience I just learned to go with it and that the right dog will end up by my side. I did also love having a say in what I wanted and I don't think I could feel as comfortable with a prematch. That would just honestly be more unknowns and more stress for me.

    • @carlycochran3860
      @carlycochran3860 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’d prefer to be prettymatch with a guide dog. The only thing that a request is to have a female dog, with a fast paced walk in with a hard pool. Because it would be very stressful for me to have to pick my guide dog.

    I worked as a home care helper for a blind woman. Her dog was so bound to her he cried when she went to the doctor or podiatrist's inner sanctum and she left him with me in the waitingroom.. He slept quietly through many a long concert at her feet beneath her chair. He waited patiently never even licking his chops through steak dinners in fancy restaurants. He was superb. He was a chocolate lab with a huge broad massive head. We became great friends as I often took him on his walks because it was easier for me to clean up after him. I never saw that dog guide her in a misstep despite cracked pavement or narrow paths. He pulled somewhat which hurt her arthritic back a bit but he was sure and steady. He's gone now. Cancer got him when he got older. The guide dog foundation would have taken him back for his last days but the pair could not be separated. He stayed with his partner to the end.

When I look online for disabled creators or on social media I find people who are so far along in their journey and have a lot of what comes with being disabled figured out. Sometimes it just makes me feel like I'm a failure, and when you shared you experience of just feeling like people look at you like all you are is your disabilities, I've really been struggling with that this year and you were the first person I ever heard share that experience. • @MollyBurkeOfficial
      @MollyBurkeOfficial  2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Exactly! That's part of why they don't pre-match... they like to see which dog actually responds to you and which doesn't - some dogs don't want to work for some people but LOVE to for others!

    • @cinnamoon1455
      @cinnamoon1455 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@MollyBurkeOfficial I totally agree with that take. Dogs (and cats) do have strong preferences too and behave very differently with people they click with or don't.
      My cat, who's super shy and always hid at the rescue actually came straight to me to get petted and when she was satisfied she walked into my transport box and lay down.
      So I'd argue that it's important for handlers and the dogs as well to get a say whether they like each other or not.

    As a person who went to a school that did pre-match… I do have to say that I did have a say. I was given the dog that I eventually ended up with… But there was several conversations that I did with my trainers where we talked about things that were different and things that could have been better. They considered switching me to another dog but I ended up staying with Roger. There was another gentleman in my class who did end up having a dog switch a couple days into training. His switch ended up being the one he went home with… So even though we are pre-matched… We did have a say and switches can happen.

    I’ve watched your videos for years though admittedly I’m not much of a commenter on TH-cam. But I just wanted to quickly say that I’ve just finished watching the documentary of how iconic king gallop came into your life. It’s such a wonderful time capsule and a contrast to where you are now in many ways. Your pain then was so visceral. Your heartbreak so raw. My heart was shattered for you, and yet so filled with pride thinking my god if only 20 year old Molly could know how much better it’s going to get. How much life she is going to live. How much joy she’s going to feel. How much of a brilliant, beautiful sparkling light beam she’s going to be in this world. You made it all happen. You are the absolute bees knees Molly.
