    Service dogs are more then just what they were trained to do, they are four legged furry heroes who've helped their humans feel whole again.

    Incredible, this sort of thing always makes me emotional because it’s such a dream, even thinking about gaining back some independence with the help of a dog makes me emotional. I’m looking to get a service dog as well but haven’t had much luck so far.

      If you don't mind me asking what state or country do you live in, and was it a mobility SD you were looking for? I looked at a lot of SD programs when I was looking for a mobility service dog. I don't know if any of that info could be helpful to you but thought I'd ask. I ended up not getting a dog from the program I was accepted with, because I had a surgery that gave me a lot of independence back - definitely still disabled and I could benefit from an SD still but the organization I was going to work with only does like 6-7 dogs a year and I felt there were others more in need than me once my surgery got me more mobile.

      @@ZebraGirl97 ah that's kind of you, thanks for asking! I live in the Netherlands. I'm not entirely sure what is possible especially because I have an invisible chronic illness as my disability and I can technically still function, like I can open a door or take off my socks, it just hurts a lot. I'm looking into it with my therapist though and hopefully we'll find something, if worse comes to worse I'll train the dog myself, I'm just sad that it's taking so long.

    This is so precious! I have a lab/retriever who is my best friend. My son has autism and I have a lot of very serious medical problems, and she has been a gift to our family. She isn’t service trained, but she is super smart. When I’m having a bad day with pain she always snuggles as close to me as possible.

      You can train your dog independently.. In the UK they are called assistance dogs and in the USA they are service dogs.

I can so relay to how you feel when George moved in with me i spend 3 weeks just looking at him crying you never know what a blessing a service dog is until you need one. He isn't just a companion and help he is a piece if independence, life quality, hope and freedom back after it was lost. There simply are no words to describe that.

    I love SD's so much! ^^
    This dog is so amazing!! I love watching SD's work and do the many tasks they were trained to do! ^^
    I just started training my own PSD this summer, and he's already helped change my life! The motivation I feel to even get up in the morning and start the day has come back. And even on mornings when I wake up extremely anxious, he's there and helps me get outta bed even if I really don't feel like participating in life that day. I feel like sense it's my responsibility to train him everything he knows, it gives me a sense of purpose and gives me something to look forward to! ^^
    In a lot of ways he has giving me my life back, and he's also helped me find a new life for myself! He absolutely LOVES his vest and bandana, and will even try to put them on himself sometimes! XD
    I kinda can't wait till we're further into his training, and I can start taking him with me to public places. We work outside of public places a lot, (like Costco walmart, ecs...) and he even does his tasks for me then! it just makes me so proud of him! ^^
    He's helped me become more confident when working with him, despite people watching us. Especially when people compliment us and his skillz ^^ It makes me so happy, and has been helping me to be less afraid of certain people that I don't know.

    I know kibble is the norm but it’s really not that healthy for dogs (or cats). Service dogs are a treasured asset and also quite expensive so trying to extend his life as much as possible is what’s best. Look into more healthier dog food. There’s healthy “kibble” such as ziwipeak or biljac and there’s also human grade food such as farmers dog.

      My brother in law has a servicedog. Of course they walk him plenty and play with him, but he really lives to help. And if he thinks it's been too long since he got a task to do, he'll invent them himself. So he'll randomly bring stuff like the car keys, the remote controll, a banana or some piece of paper he found.

    • @celestiafanforever
      @celestiafanforever 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I've seen videos of assistance dogs, or service dogs as what they're sometimes called, at play or just having a break. So it's safe to say that yes they do get time to run around and be a normal dog while still knowing that they have a job. That job is to help their human with whatever they might need help with. May it be medical or being what Derby is. However I don't think they're allowed to be naughty, like causing a mass in the house or not doing what they're trained to do.

    • @kidwolf0015
      @kidwolf0015 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Yes, they're allowed to have breaks and be dogs.
      Virtually all lightimate service dog training facilites actively tell handlers to give thier service dogs breaks and to treat them as partners.
      Service dogs tend to be the some of the happest, well-treated, and respected beings around. I'd feel a lot sadder for household pets if I were you. They're the ones who are rarely allowed to be themselves and have no fullfillment in life.
      One of the reasons why dropout rates are so high is because it is considered cruel to force dogs to do service work. Only dogs who WANT to do it will pass. If the dog shows even the slightest bit of discomfort, they will probably be washed out.

    • @crosita1
      @crosita1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      They do actually! We always have a backup plan for our dogs if they aren't feeling it, but usually that means they are sick and we are headed to the vet because they almost always would rather help out than do anything else if they are ok. I always gave my girl a choice by holding up her SD harness and she was more excited about that than about her other harnesses. But if it was raining hard (she hated the rain) we would wait for it to stop, or not go! You never want your SD doing work they don't love because they might stop wanting to work. So you find ways to make everything they do a lot of fun for them, and if you can't, you don't have them do that thing.
      They still have lots of time when they are off duty. They still get to play, and take sniffy walks, and lots of naps. As for being naughty, we don't expect them to be perfect, just reliable through lots of practice. Harriett used to grab a sneaky sniff on the job at times. A couple times waiting in line at a cafe and she'd hop into a stranger's lap which is extremely naughty and I would have to apologize profusely, but she chose her targets well because they were usually delighted and I just made sure to pay closer attention and make waiting more fun with treats to avoid that in the future. It's not like they get punished for being naughty, it's just we have to make it even more motivating to be polite instead!
      She lost her hearing from some meds for an ear infection, and so I immediately retired her. Years later she's a slightly senile old lady who pees on everything and she's still a beloved family member. I give her fluids every day for her kidneys and my partner cooks her kidney-friendly food from scratch once a week.

      Just remember that the dogs don't see a difference in playing tug with a toy and playing tug with clothes or a door, same with fetching items vs fetching a stick, so they actually get a Lot more play time than most dogs!
