Guide dog name reveal dropped on Patreon yesterday! patreon.com/mollyburke if you just can't wait! :D
Also, for clarity... when the guide dog trainers ask us to not compare out new dog to our old ones, they mean negatively. Finding the positive ways in which your new dog is like your previous guides is a really great thing to do because it can help you bond faster and feel more connected and open to them. When I ask you not to compare my new guide dog my previous two, it's the same thing. I'm asking you not to say you like one better than the other, one is cuter looking than the other, etc. but seeing the wonderful ways in which they are similar is encouraged! :)

Very accurate description of how it usually works if you don't get prematched. My service dog also chose me and it's honestly the same for all service dog handlers I know that didn't get a prematch. A friend at first didn't want her dog at all, as she set her heart on another, but the dog chose her and there was no way the dog would work for someone else. Now they're an amazing team with an incredibly strong bond and she often says how lucky she was that her dog did not let go.

Yes, service dogs can be very helpful. But do realise that they are also a dog. They need all the dog things a normal dog does + extra training (even if you get a pre trained one). They require time and energy. And they are always by your side, in times you really need their help, but also in times when you need them less and having a dog with you is a bit more inconvenient (space constraints, less accessible areas, discrimination etc).
Just something I think every service dog owner should be aware of before they decide to take a service dog. Because it is overlooked sometimes. Best of luck with whatever choice you make!

@@laartje24 I agree in the UK they are called Assistance dogs. I have an assistance dog in training and it really is a lot of work, even more so if you owner-train them.
My dog also has a trainer that he sees, this costs me £45/hour, that's $61/hour, that price is actually classified as cheap as most other trainers cost between £60-80 an hour. Not only do you have to train your dog but also train yourself, especially with guide and mobility tasks there are specific ways in how to work with your dog so that you don't cause harm to your dog.
I have to train him every day and keep up to date with where he is at with each individual task and have to note down any issues that come up and focus on them.
The training required to pass a public access test is actually quite a lot and takes a lot of time if you owner train.
Not to mention you have to pay for vet bills (Jabs and annual checks included, especially if they are doing guide/mobility work to check that their joints are doing well),
Food also can cost quite a lot, especially for a larger dog (the larger the dog the more food the dog needs) and mobility and guide tasks usually require larger dogs. I currently spend £39/month which is $53/month on food alone.
On top of all this they are dogs after all, they need daily walks in order to burn off all that energy, especially for high energy working breeds, if you can't do that yourself then you have the added costs of dog walkers, my local dog walkers charge around £10/hour which is $13/hour.
they also need play time and relax time / off duty time.
If you don't have the time and the money then it can become a nightmare and you'll end up with an average pet dog instead of an assistance/service dog.
Note: I also agree, you will get challenged when entering buildings on a regular basis, you will get people look at you and ask you questions on a daily basis, you will also have a lot of attention drawn to you even if you don't want that attention. Not to mention how many children will run up to you and will want to pet your dog.
Because of these factors quite often doctors in the UK will not recommend an assistance/service dog to you. I myself brought up the idea to my therapist whom agreed that it would help me due to my circumstances, but my doctor refused to give a note for it and referred me to more therapy sessions instead.

Glad you found a better match! As a service dog user myself: dominance theory is actually pretty outdated and has been debunked. There's no inherent drawbacks to letting a service or guide dog sleep on the 'same level' as you except for personal preference and logistics. They aren't going to start seeing you as inferior or anything.
Plus, dogs are very smart and capable of learning context. This means they can learn when it is okay to get on the furniture and when it is not allowed, such as when you are at home vs at a hotel. Skilled trainers can teach them contextual contingencies, like “you can only jump up on the bed to wake me up from a PTSD nightmare” or “you can sleep on the bed, but if you jump off you shouldn’t get back up unless invited to do so so you don’t interrupt my sleep”.
It doesn’t have to be all or nothing, and training in absolutes this way undermines the intelligence of the dog. We owe it to them to teach them presuming competence.

I was very spoiled when matched with my first service dog at 18. I can confidently say that he picked me. All the trainers and the rest of the people in my class saw it. I've had pet dogs all my life, but this was something else. He worked with others in the class and I worked with other dogs, but anytime we were together it felt perfect. I can remember doing laps around the training room and any time we passed a trainer, he would hug a bit closer to my side and look at them like "I got this. We're good". He also had this quirk about him that happened from day one. When he was in a down under the table during dinner or lecture, he'd paw at me until I held his hand. He did it all 12 years I had him, all through HS and college. He couldn't relax under the desk unless he knew where I was. If I got up while he was dozing to present in front of the class, he'd wake up and march to the front to lay at my feet. He had such a wise old soul. I don't think I'll ever have another dog like him. My current SD is the opposite. Very chill boy, but is young at heart. Both are wonderful in their own right. The bond of an SD team is like nothing else. Somehow this intelligent, furry creature becomes an extension of yourself in a way that's hard to describe.

Like I could see him with someone who has kids who could play and be a release for the energy when he’s off harness. But for someone who lives in an apartment and travels a lot and has a lower energy level than that dog, it’s not the perfect match. He’s lovely and beautiful and will be perfect for the right person. Miss Molly, as someone who has had a lot of family dogs in my life, (I know not the same) my last dog passed away on Halloween 2020 and I was dead set on not getting another dog however, I had a precious little boy quite literally drop into my lap. I now love this boy so much more then I've ever thought possible. I firmly believe you get what you need everytime. So I get your whole thing about getting the dog you need even if its not what what you wanted.

Given that, why did they bother having you try her out? Molly, as a professional dog trainer and vet student: the thing about showing the dog you're the "dominant" one and not letting them on the bed is actually very untrue. Research dominance theory. It's already been scientifically proven that it's incorrect and dogs don't see us as "alphas" at all. That's just a very old theory that unfortunately people still use a lot. However of course it does make sense not to teach guide dogs to be on furniture for various other reasons including the other one you mentioned.😉

13:50 Dominance theory has been looong debunked.
    1. There's nothing wrong with not letting a dog on the furniture. You can choose to not allow your dog on your bed for more comfortable sleeping, or you might want to avoid having hair on the couch. Maybe you want your home to feel more comfortable for guests. Maybe it's just a preference, no specific reason. All perfectly valid.
But to think that no furniture will somehow translate into exerting "dominance" or show that you're "on a different level" is just silly.
    2. I understand this seems like an innoncent enough couple of sentences, but dominance theory is what leads people to use harmful methods, so please, for the sake of dogs, let's stop perpetuating this lie.
    3. It can still be a good idea to not let the dog on the bed (initially or forever) in order to set boundaries. Especially when a dog is new to one's home it's important to create a set of "house rules" that make happy co-existing possible. Letting your dog in your bed is also completely fine.
Again, not here to judge anything Molly or other dog owners do, I just hope we can FINALLY let that bs theory go.
Can't post links, so if you're interested:
    - The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behaviour (AVSAB) has a Dominance Position Statement on their site,
    - The Association of Professional Dog Trainers (APDT) has a great article titled Dominance and Dog Training

Can easily be fixed by having a request position, where the dog requests to get up with a paw up or similiar
No need for dominance, but can help establish boundaries if you're going to other houses with furniture

It is true that dominance theory is false. However, dogs can learn respect. Not letting you dog walk all over you teaches them to respect your space and boundaries. Being allowed on furniture should be a privilege dogs earn by being respectful

I genuinely can't fathom how this place affords to train these dogs and pay their staff. And they obviously have a lot of staff if they have a full time chef.
If it's 40k for one dog, and they have at least one litter at any given time, the constant donations would have to be massive in not only in frequency, but also in the amount per donation. And I imagine the average person who is not associated with or knows someone who is disabled, is probably not donating. And those who are associated with or know a disabled person, are often in a lower income bracket and can't afford to donate.
I gotta know the logistics here. How are they affording it? Do the employees live on property and that's part of their pay? Does the government give them massive grants? Inquiring minds want to know.

      @Aitherea 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@PurpleDog06 Yes, I completely agree. It's understandable to not want an animal with feet that touch many (dirty) surfaces to be on your bed or furniture. However, it has nothing to do with dominance because dogs are not trying to dominate their humans by getting in the bed or on the couch. The same is true for things like going through the door first... it means nothing to them, it does not make them feel like they have gained power over you and if you really dont want them going out the door before you (again, understandable to prevent escapes) it's pretty easy to teach them to wait using positive reinforcement lol.

I was someone who left without a guide dog who went to a school that prematched. It didn't feel right, I knew in my heart that dog wasn't right for me. I can honestly say it was one of the hardest things I've had to do, was to give up that dog. It's something that isn't talked about enough, so thank you for talking about it.

It's so interesting how so many people want dogs that match their energy levels(probably more important for service dogs and their owners). As much as I loved my low energy dogs that matched my own low energy, I somehow ended up with a much stronger bond with my high energy dog. It's definitely not the same, though, bc my dogs have all been just pets with basic training lol 😄 I'm thankful Molly has shared this experience with us! And GIGI IS SO ADORABLE I LOVE HER 😍😍😍

I'm quite sure you will probably keep gallop 2.0 but I was so disappointed because McMac was so loving toward you and so beautiful and I did like him because he was able to switch from a regular playful happy puppy to a working dog so that shows a great sign of obedience and loyalty. In the end I'm sure that we're going to love your new friend and companion no matter which one you pick.

Wow, what a journey, I have a feeling you put out the video fast because there’s a lot more videos to come… aka the switch, but you two look like you can become very good companions! Can’t wait to see the next episode ❤️
