Decided to record and release this one on-the-fly as a summer send-off! Such a fun medley, and a great way to say our goodbyes to the warm weather, and turn our heads towards the Fall (which is probably my favorite season tbh). PSA: This audio/video set-up will not be permanent -- it's simply what I was able to get ready in the middle of organizing my apartment, so rest assured I will find a suitable set-up at some point in the future (like when I finish my mini vocal studio). Enjoy!
Dude, don't hold back on the music theory please! I would love if you took a 10 minute tangent on chords and how they got through the key change. Please keep making content at any rate, it's all fantastic!
First of all I agree with Dark (the comment above) secondly... homie you are filming on a bucket... apologize for nothing. This is so cool. Almost minimalist youtuber feeling 🤣😂🤣 Keep doing you dude.
Thanks for the breakdowns! I've been singing my whole life in different settings but just by ear, no musical theory training, so I love learning new things from you (even if I'm a soprano 😁)
Just gonna comment your pretty low yourself
During Geoff’s whole section, Eli was actually singing the bassline all the way down to that A1 also in chest. It’s just really crazy how the tenor 2 of this group has really really respectable bass notes as well as his crazy crazy high belt range
From what I’ve seen in how they recorded the music for this and other videos they do, Geoff is singing all of the bass line here in this entire recording.
@@JerodM yeah I learned that since.
UPDATE: I think I've deciphered the crazy key change -- their normal chord progression through that final section would be (in F-major): F (I) - C (V) - Dm (vi) - Bb (IV). They didn't use a pivot chord, really -- they went from the Dm (vi) and landed in C-major as a brief pivot (V of the previous key and VII of the new key), then jumped to G-major, which is the IV of the new key (D-major), while Rachel held a suspension on her belt on a C#5 (sounds crunchy because it's a tritone away from G) before resolving up to the D5 (the fifth of the G-major chord that Geoff is highlighting in the bass line). Then they move to to D (I), down to A (V) and hold that for twice the normal length before resolving back to their tonic (D-major). Now my brain hurts but hopefully you guys will appreciate that 😁
Much appreciated! Thanks for taking the time!
Yep; listening to it after reading this, I think you're right. It's a really, really complex key change. (Barry Manilow would be proud...)
I don't know what that means, but a hardy thumbs up for the time and effort!
I know this is old, but I’ve been struggling with what progression they did. I think you’re right, thanks!
@@1977Jackofalltrades 😂😂
I second the comment below recommending the Little Mermaid medley if you want to hear Geoff doing the creepy bass villain thing, it's definitely one of the best examples of him doing that.
I'll put it on the list 👀
@@PeterBarber yesssssss!!!
And Oogie Boogie if not done yet!
My favourite part of this one is seeing Eli get to flex his low range during Geoff’s solo. They usually double track Geoff so it’s nice to see it.
Hey Peter I’m just letting you know during shiny Eli was doing the bass line while Geoff was singing. 10:43 I just want people to talk about Eli’s Bassline as a tennor because his lowest note is in this Bassline.
I always cry at the part where her grandmother visits her on the ocean, that part is just goosebumps.
I love how Eli holds the bass line while Geoff is singing.. Eli does a lot of that for Geoff.
Every time i ger to Rachel's dark call. I cry too.
I love the respect pro singers have for Disney movies. And how every one knows every lyric.
I also liked the progression lower in the line "Strut my stuff, my stuff is so..." It's a neat little touch to add that to a spoken bass line. I also love the little bass slide during the quiet part. He sounds exactly like a bass guitar riff.
Creepy bass villain thing? You gotta see Voiceplay's Oogie Boogie Man! It's so perfect for him. It's not just his lows, his whole range is insane.
I think the key change flipping what *should" be minor to the same key in major fits the storyline of the film, though, in that it reflects how Moana upended her people's culture, and getting them back to being voyagers.
another fantastic reaction! pls consider reacting to the Little mermaid medley also ft Rachel, it's awesome
There is this a frozen 2 arrangement that they did was so amazing! If u seen frozen 2, you'llove their melody cover!
💯 I'll tear up in a heartbeat with good blend and harmony
This was awesome! Moana is one of my favorite Disney movies, it's soundtrack is SO well done!
What I like the most about the bass in this medley is that it is there supporting the rest of the group. Yes, there is a bass solo, and of course it's great. But this isn't a place for the bass to be the star. I think the best example is right at the beginning of the slower, dark scene. Those notes Geoff is hitting are, when you stop to think about it, insanely low. But when you're listening, you sort of pass over them and pay attention to the melody that Rachael is carrying. Sometimes the hardest thing to do is to successfully blend into the group while doing something really hard. And just sitting on a single very long note low in your range while keeping the pitch and volume constant is pretty darn hard.
I love this one! Thanks for a great breakdown, Peter!
Enjoy what's left of the summer, and your new apartment 😍
This is such a great feel-good summer medley from VoicePlay! Love it so much. Thanks for sharing your insight. Heads-up - Geoff has a new song that should be released on Friday or Saturday and it might just be my favourite thing he's ever done. Would love to hear your take on it.
awesome reaction they did a collab with rachel and did the little mermaid Highly recommend it
Definitely need to check out the Little Mermaid medley if you like Geoff's Creepy bass lines.
Another youtube person that I would love to see your reaction for would be Colm McGuinness Music.
Colm is a friend and I will definitely be featuring his content in the future! He's a brilliant musician
Awesome! Glad to hear you are friends and will look forward to the reactions on his music. 🥰
thank you for the reaction to this! I love their versions of the songs so much that I went right ahead and bought them.
And of course I also enjoyed you sharing your knowledge about vocals and how much you yourself seem to enjoy the music :)
I love your reactions..very insightful and informative. Thank you. A big fan and sub.
I can't tell if it's Eli covering the bass for the entire time while Geoff is singing Shiny, or if Geoff overdubbed some of it like the Oogie Boogie song. But if it is Eli the entire time. his range is insane! Couple C2s and all the way down to an A1 at one point.
I watched that part several times & also watched it in slow motion. Look closely at Eli on the microphone ( near the beginning ) while Geoff is performing his solo you can see it is Eli holding the bass line.
This is my absolute favorite arrangement by Voice Play and after your videos popped up in my feed, I had to search for this. I'm so glad 😊
Gonna go watch Moana now. Love the Poly recognition.. finally.
Moana was GREAT. And I know a lot of it is Lin-Manuel Miranda's music because I feel the same thing about Encanto. He's the only music writer for Disney other than Alan Menken that makes me love the songs beyond just seeing them IN the movie.
I heard it's always sunny over there.
Another great reaction video with thorough teaching lessons! Much appreciated work u do. I ABSOLUTELY love your reaction to Shiny made me smile 😁
Excited to hear more for sure, and CONGRATS in the classes going forward, good luck!
I miss when Earl was a part of Voiceplay :( it's sad that he left. They are still amazing of course ♥♥♥♥♥ You should check out their little mermaid medley next :D Geoff plays Ursula lmfao.
Geoff does an 8 octave slide in the Little Mermaid Medley as Ursula and it's absolutely insane!!
@@shayraby it’s so 100% absolutely not an 8 octave slide, his range is 5 octaves or maybe a little less, but it’s still quite impressive. I think it’s a 3 octave slide?
Well Earl still works with them he just preferred to produce instead of perform
@@ondrejlukas326 You are thinking of Tony Wakim.
Welcome to PHilly! I live just outside of Philly... near the Air Force Base in WIllow Grove... Love all of your reactions.. thanks and enjoy your stay here.. Nice apartment!. Philly Fry here... yup.. Voice Play fan, too.. have you seen their compilation of Just Sing? Truly amazing.. If you want to know the complete cast, I suggest closed Captioning..... Thanks for everything!
My brother recently graduated with education in opera singing, best of luck to you! Thank you for your review!
Loved another reaction on Voiceplay. I can’t wait to watch you analyze their new one HOIST THE COLOURS. It is unbelievable!!!!!
Geoff said in the comments of this video that the area after "Shiny" he was in sub.
The B1 is chest the G1 is sub then the rest is chest
Ayyy welcome to Philly! It's a time and a half for sure lol
Love you content dude, keep it up!
I love this medley, and yeah you should watch Little Mermaid as well, but I just want to say it made me giggle to watch you getting down to Tamatoa's song Shiny. Jamming to it like it's a hit on the radio and I just love it! Best of luck with your classes as well. I'm so glad you're following your dreams!
It’s crazy how times change. Growing up being part of a choir, the mentality was; the louder the better. I’ve seen many people destroying their vocal chords because of it while in the meantime gulping raw eggs and getting cortisone shots on their vocals like crazy. Now, with all the good recording equipment, they don’t need to hit and hold notes on high volume.
The singers that have been lost during these times, though… I remember one girl in particular, could sing so high, it sounded like a bird chirping• and now, she’s a mezzo because of it.
I’m thankful for the opportunities given to so many talented vocalists nowadays
love that you react to these amazing A Capella groups ! Please check out Voctave the Disney Princess medley if you haven't already . It's breathtaking
*Voctave
@@RedRoseSeptember22 yeah my spelling sucks on the fly … sorry
The Charismatic Singer interviewed Layne about this arrangement and production. You'd prob really like it
I love Shiny it’s so criminally underrated
Love your breakdown! You give so much insight that I would have 0 clue about othervise. So for the same reason I would love if you could do a breakdown of Pentatonix "Silent Night" They are singing live in a church off mic. Personaly I think they sound best off mic, I feel that they blend better and the church gives a nice authentic reverb to it all. Would be interesting to hear someone who knows what they are talking about break it down.
Yes please
The inside of all churches have a lot of reverb sound in them so the voice/voices resonate through the church. It does change the quality of the voices so there wouldn't be a need for microphones. Singing in a stairwell has the same effect.
Another way to look at that F->Dm->D key modulation, is F->C->G->D (i.e., three steps clockwise on the circle of fifths), without stopping to sing for a bit at each in between step. Modulating one step around the circle at a time is very common; two steps at once, less so; three at once is a lot, but apparently you can do it. (I mean, of course you *can*. In principle you can just throw down any new key signature you want and jump to it, it's just a question of what the listener's brain will do in response.)
I'm from Virginia. Where were you at here in VA? Great reaction as always. Good luck in Philly. And a cool thing is Eli takes over the bass when Geoff is singing.
Its actually Geoff singing on a second track, he said so in an interview. Geoff asked Eli if he wanted to act like he was doing the bass and Eli was like sure why not.
Now you should react to the Little Mermaid Medley!
First, how did I miss this video coming out? Another great breakdown. Second, you absolutely must react to Geoff's new cover of "House of the Rising Sun".
You should check out VoicePlay's cover of We're Good. It's got some interesting stuff in it that I'd love to hear your take on. Also, Geoff's High and Dry cover. Not enough people react to that one, and it really shows off his range. It's a beautiful song.
Welcome to Philly. Hope you didn't have any flooding with Ida. Thanks for this reaction.
Yes, Eli is short for Eliezer (Jacobson) so not Eel eye. :) Loved your reaction. I am also very moved in movies or indeed songs. But that's the heart of an artist, surely?
Nice analysis. Did they use the note A to transition from F major to D Major? Off the top of my head there are no chords in common between F major and D major but they could use the notes A and D and then throw in the F#. But I could be full of it, 40 years since music theory.
They could be on the 5th of F (C major chord) and went to D major.
My theory is as yours, a little old, but maybe they moved from F Major through A Major which contains the F# for 1st inversion of D Major. That, maybe why it sounds so prominent?
That makes sense. F major to the 5 of the new key (A major) to the 1st inversion (A,D,F#).
The chords are D minor (soon I'll know), C major (how far I'll), G major (go), D major. Rachel's riff sits on C and C# for a while before going up to D, which sounds pretty spicy against the G major chord.
You're talking about the C# being against the G?
You have to do their liitle mermaid medley! Geoff has a slide in there that will get every pair of oit vipers you own
If you want more Pit Viper action I would highly recommend VoicePlays Rendition of The Ooggy Boogy song from The Nightmare Before Christmas, Geoff hits some heavy low notes. Love the vids keep up the good work!
Just read the comment you made a bit ago that you will be doing the video in October for Halloween. Look forward to seeing your Video on it!
I'm doing Oogie Boogie for one of my Halloween specials 👻
Congrats to new place and good luck with everything.
You should react to "Run to you" by Pentatonix. It's one of their originals and Avi's voice sounds so good in it.
The Hunchback of Notre dame is the best disney movie musically
You should review PTX "Run to You". Beautiful original song by PTX.
Also, check out Sam Robson's version of Run to You. 1man sounds like full orchestra, tenor to bass range!!!! Won't be disappointed.
There’s a piano piece I’ve been working on and it has that same key change F major to D Major and it’s really interesting and weird but it sounds amazing 😂
Love Voice Play
Great job at making it yours without being so far off it was a totally unrecognizable songs
Just a piece of advice that was given to me years ago. If or when you need cut the A/C off, have a small Fan blowing air at you. Even warm air that is moving is cooler than the humid, still air. And Fans are very quiet. Just a suggestion. Great Post.
"His amazing bassness" that was funny to me dont know why
Congrats on the move to Philly.
I'd love to hear your take on their cover of Wayward Son
I cry at the same spot in Moana. Every time.
1:22 it’s August 27th when I’m watching this lol
I am going to have to break it down to see what chords they used and the modes housed within. I am wondering if they took something like Mixolydian and went to through to a straight Major; or something like a chord housed within harmonic minor and flipped it back to the Greek modes... I just don't know exactly what they did here. The shift they used was definitely different.
I was surprised to hear on the Elizabeth Zharoff 1 hour interview with Lain Stein concerning the production of Moana Medley video, that when Geoff took lead vocals and there is a bass background, Lei was only lip-singing the bass. Geoff actual laid down the bass track for background for the video. Wonder how they work this issue when live.
Closing in on haloween, you should do voiceplays oogie boogie song.
Hey I’m from Chester County, you definitely wanna check out like Kennett Square, Unionville and other surrounding areas.
You should definitly do their little mermaid Medly. it was really amazing.
I plan on it!!
Hey man, I recently started watching and I enjoy your stuff. That being said, have you check out Voiceplay doing My Mother Told Me? I think it'd definitely be pit viper worthy
I was hoping you'd catch Eli doing the bass line during geoffs part. They focus the camera on him doing bassy things several times. And he's really good, especially considering he's trading the first part back and forth with Rachel at the very high range at first.
It's just like the other times. It's still Geoff. They have Eli fake it for the sake of the video.
Yeah, Chris Rupp, in the comments of his own reaction of this medley confirmed that he asked Geoff himself and Geoff confirmed that he was double-tracked :))
@@timsanduleac1646 Layne also said in charismatic voice interview and deep dive on this song that it was Geoff
You should do frozen 2 by them as well. I think you'll like it
Please, please, please listen to Avi Kaplan's solo stuff!! In particular, Change on the Rise.
That was a B0 growl at the end
You should listen to Geoff singing in oogie boogie
Geoff just went beast mode on “House of the Rising Sun”
React to that! Haha
I don't know how to say this without coming off as a creep, but i need to get this out...your voice is making me feel..i mean really FEEL
Hello from Hatboro Pa.
Voice Play -My Mother Told Me
Home Free- Man of Constant Sorrow!!
I would like to hear Old Man River from Showboat- A cappella but I could only find a group called Masterpiece who does it.. they sound good..
Very intersting..I am waiting for Little Mermeid medley by Voiceplay.
Bro, honestly I think that your chest fry is better than most peoples sub. My problem with sub harmonics is that they almost never have warmth to them.
I would like to hear your review of Home Free's Mayday. It has a surprising low note. At least I wasn't expecting it.
If you want to hear Geoff get really low, you should react to their cover of the oogie boogie song from the nightmare before Christmas !!!!
I see the glasses rack in the window... better put the Pit Vipers on the shelf, just in case.
Nice video
Hiii!! Suggestion here: if “French Pentatonix from the 1980’s” sounds appealing to you, you should check out the band Pow Wow and their most popular songs “Le Chat”, “le Lion est mort ce soir”!!! Xoxo
Loved it! You have to watch Tomi P’s cover of my mother told me it’s phenomenal!!!
Geoff just recorded House of the rising sun OMG vocal gymnastics ⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️
Hey Peter I am a new Sub on your channel, I subbed you yesterday (I love when you react to your fellow bass singers such as Geoff, Avi and Tim Foust to name a few, also I am maybe alone on this but every now and then in your spoken voice my ears and mind decieve me, cause the way you speak is so similar to Geoff, I mean I know that his speaking voice is a bit lower, but the point I am trying to make is, the two of you sound so similar that if you ever had a chance of doing a collab with one and other, it would be a BASS POWER HOUSE prossibly capable of shattering window panes. On another unrelated note, I saw your reaction on Dimash Kudaibergen's new song 'Stranger' where you said something along the lines of , you weren't gonna analyze him for any operatic sounds just his singing in general, I know that's not exactly what you said, but you said something about opera that made me go through your videoes cause I was curious. Then I heard you sing and my eyes almost popped out, cause when you sing opera and I am not looking at you, you straight up sound exactly like a friend of mine who is also a bass singer (well he is a family friend, he is like a bonus uncle for me, anyways he has been singing with my mother since, before I was born, (my grandmother was an opera singer aswell so my mother was brought up very classically educated, but she has a pretty wide spread singing from Soul, and "broadway style" aka musical performance, to opera. why do I tell you this, well that is because I think you are incredibly talented. ^^ Sorry for my long rambling here, I just wanted to share that with you. And now last thing, would you please do a reaction on VoicePlay's "What's This?" from The Nightmare Before Christmas feat J. None. I hope you will do this. Greetings from Denmark.
Was it really that long ago dang I’m starting to feel old
I would love to see your reaction and analysis of hellfire by tomi p. Pretty much the entirety of the song is pitviper.
You HAVE TO react (if You haven't yet) to Oogie Boogie song from "the night before christmas" that they've done, maybe You can try the note Geoff does at the end, maybe👀
👉 Are you also interested in analyzing a young woman who has a unique deep voice ? Diana is a dramatic contralto, the rarest and lowest female voice type. Also Diana's voice has a polyphonic undertone... and when you hear her voice, you feel like she has wrapped you in a warm velvet blanket and served you a mug of hot, dark chocolate. Every song is a unique experience, it captivates you, you feel bound by magic. Diana doesn't just sing, she creates worlds.

After this I've gotta request both Voiceplay's Little Mermaid medley AND their Oogie Boogie's Song.
Geoff has a new song out!!!!!!!!
If you like Rachel with them do the little mermaid track pit viper moment for sure
A great groove song is pentatonix Havana.
Hey, how ya liking the flooding? You doing okay there? My brother lives nearby, and he says it kinda sucks at the moment. Hope you're fine!
Great reaction! I'm not sure if you're already seen it, but the green light performances by Hugh Jackman (From Now On) and Keala Settle (This Is Me) are fantastic and when you mentioned that you cry during emotive scenes/songs I thought of these performances because I was so overcome with emotion listening to particularly Keala's performance, that I literally couldn't stop my eyes from running uncontrollably, haha. It was so moving. And Hugh was told not to sing on account of his (at that time) recent nose surgery because he could damage his wound, but he also was so moved in the moment that he sang his heart out. I'd love for you to react to the whole videos of the performances, so much (without pre-watching ^_^ )!
