Geoff apparently wasn't satisfied with completely changing the melody, rhythm, tone of the song - so he added a bridge that the song has never had before! He's done that on a number of songs now - I'm hoping he'll go all out and just write his own song!
No repetitive song will ever remain un-inspiring or boring if the interpretation is left to VoicePlay.
That Split second face he made at 7:19 was just like "DAMNIT GEOFF!" You ain't slick Pete!🤣🤣🤣
The line where Geoff says "I'm gonna carve his heart out" comes from a line in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. The late, great actor Alan Rickman, who played the Sheriff of Nottingham yells "I'm going to carve your heart out, with a spoon."
“Why a spoon, cousin?”
“Because it’s dull, you twit! It’ll hurt more!” 😂
I loved this. Instead of "instagram" version, I like to think of the end as "reality of singing drunk" to the first part being "what you THINK you sound like when you're drunk" lol
Exactly!!!
Gotta love Geoff's "baritone" speaking voice there at the end, right? 😆
That is also the noise I make when someone steals my beer. Way-heeeeeeeeyy! *soprano note*
Guy six is Bucky, a former member of VP in its first iteration under a different name (I forget what it was). He’s in a couple of their shorts as well-very nice tenor. I’d love to see him featured in one of their full-length songs. (I’d also like to see Jose get a longer solo sometime when he’s featured-I’d love to hear him sing a bit more.)
Awesome reaction, Peter! I totally agree-this is definitely the best version I’ve heard, and I love the added bridge that Geoff wrote for this.
OMG, can’t wait to see interview with Layne!
42Five was the other name for VP
@@rebeccaischy1585 Thanks. I knew it was 42 something but forgot the last number. LOL.
@@lkayh just think of it as the group adding a beatboxer, going from 4 to 5 members
As we say on the VP discord, Geoff (who arranged this) doesn't "do" repetitive... He'll write a bridge (as he did here) and/or mix the song elements up into something new and fresh. ❤❤
The 1 thing Voice Play is phenomenal at is making a song completely their own. Nobody could ever accuse them of plagiarism. You said it, the best in the biz❤
Geoff is such an underrated actor which lends to his performances and places him a notch above someone who can just do low sounds. His demented side eye during the captain’s daughter part is so funny and adds so much to his insane vocals. That’s what makes Voice Play stand out in a crowded space is those extras and that intrinsic it factor charisma.
I’ve made this rather controversial statement before but you can sing the lowest note ever sang and have the personality of wet cardboard and like 5 people are going to care. Every acappella group who has done well mainstream has that personality to back up the obvious skill. You need that sauce with the steak.
Wonderful reaction! Your eyeroll when Geoff goes deep had me laughing so hard!
VP is definitely the best at taking songs that were originally repetitive and turning them into something you want to listsen to on repeat. 😆
This was another great analysis, Peter, and I am looking forward to your interview with Layne. I love when he talks about the technical side of what he does.
Great r&a Peter thanks!! VoicePlay are the masters of taking the most repetitive songs and turning them into a banger!😍 This was a Geoff arrangement, with additional lyrics and music which is always great to see💙 They all did an amazing job with this one!!
Leave it to VoicePlay to take an "absurdly repetetive and boring" traditional song and stand it on its head. Bucky seems to be bringing back some of the "fun" spark I felt they lost when Earl left the group. Wonderful R&A, as always, Peter!!
So excited to hear you're going to interview Layne as well! Can't wait! Geoff has described Layne as 'going to another planet and comes back with genius arrangements'. I think they've all followed him there cause they are all producing amazing arrangements. Love it! Thanks for the R/A of this one, it is so much fun! BTW, Bucky (the drunken sailor) does sing, check out their mini's to hear him in 500 Miles!
So Layne is Jack Skellington after Christmastown ? Well we nearing the season....
Hands down my favorite version of this song! It's so fun to see other people react to it because it's not at all what is expected.
Geoff always is so creative with the songs he arranges 💜🤣
He was a member before VoicePlay when it was 4:2:Five. He's currently working at the theme parks as a voice actor. Has done 500 miles, a short of VP. Did the choreography for Geoff's Monster Mash.
Geoff did switch this up compared to his usual, when he hits a Sub its usually just one sustained note, but with this song we actually were gifted to him singing in Sub and not holding a single note, epic
Awesome reaction as always Peter.
I love this video. So much fun.
The drunken sailor is Matt "Bucky" Buckner. He's a former member from waaaaaaay back when they were 4:2:Five for a short time.
Now he's a Gamer, Voice Actor and works at Disney World. He stops by Pattycake to say hi every now and then. He can also be seen in 2 of their minis/shorts.... Candy Crush Caravan Escapade and I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) as a pesky mall shopper.
I always enjoy reactions by those with technical expertise the most. The fact that you are also a bass, and called him out for claiming he was a baritone, just makes it that much better.
If you watch their shorts of candy crush and 500 miles, you will see Bucky in those as well. Apparently he hangs out at the mall waiting to ambush singing quartets. He is hilarious and I can’t imagine how much fun they had making this. (He also did the choreography for Geoff’s MonsterMash .)
So glad VoicePlay made your fave version of this song! I think we all wanted to be a part of this fun song and video.
That little shout of "Hey!" you were wondering about calls back to their cover of Hoist the Colours, in which they used the same call, and which also featured Jose Rosario Jr.
I'm behind on feeding the algorithm, the hungry animal that it is.
Thank you Peter for another great reaction to Voice Play. You have a beautiful smile & I love it every time Voice Play makes you smile. I am so glad you liked it & highly praised them for it.
This is much more fun than the original. The drunken sailor is past member Matthew Buckner aka Bucky. He was in the group when they were 4:2:Five. He is also in two of their minis. Candy Caravan Escapade and I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles).
How Layne can "speak" such volumes of sass and resentment with that side eye when the "captain" interrupts his play! And Geoff's nod to Alan Rickman's Sheriff of Nottingham rant "I'll carve his heart out ... with a spoon!"
7:17 lmao your camera almost couldn't handle geoff's subharmonic there
You are correct sir! Voice Play is the ultimate in acapella creativity.
Drunken sailor is Bucky. He did 'I would walk 500 miles' short with them.
I remember in his interview with you, Geoff said that if he just spoke to you on the street, he wouldn't sound like a bass... And then he drops spoken outro comments like the one on this video. 🙄 I suspect he still hears himself in the voice he had ~25 years ago (When VoicePlay was just starting out), while the rest of us are hearing him as he actually sounds today.
The vocal shout is a call back to the shout in Hoist the colors
Laughter.....watching you react is SO MUCH FUN.....😂
The sixth man is a friend and fan that comes and sings with them every now and again, named Bucky.
Nothing repetitive or boring about VoicePlay's version of this song, not to mention that the video is just so goofy and fun to watch.
I love this so much!! They are so silly and this is just sooo much fun!! Bucky is from back in the old days of 4:2:five. Geoff arranged this one. This is just as they call it, their special kind of dumb, and I love it!!! lmao Great reaction!! Clara the doll is creepy and needs to be thrown overboard! lol I laughed so damn hard with this
Cordelia, no matter how to many times you try to get them to give away Clara, I think they’re gonna keep her. I expect to see her in a Halloween special one of these years.😂💀🙀
@@janetdw you are probably right...lol
My headcanon is that the boys have TRIED to get rid of Clara, only she KEEPS COMING BACK!
I love that as a bass singer you too are flabbergasted at the notes that Geoff can hit.
Hearing these guya do a funny version of this song was amazing, and that bit at the end where they chat with Bucky is hilarious. Love the new channel logo, would love to see that on a hat.
Yep, they are original. And never afraid to make fools of themselves! To me that's so endearing; so many artists seem to take themselves too seriously.
The drunken sailor here is (goddess, I can't remember his first name right now!) Buckner, called Bucky. He's a former member of the group from the early days with it was call 4:2Five, alluding to the addition of one more person to the group, making five. Bucky's now doing voiceover work for Disney and other companies and joins VP occasionally. He appears in their short I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles).
I think it's Matthew Buckner.
I saw the short for "how you think you sound when you're drunk vs how you actually sound" with this vid and I'm still laughing! 😂 Awesome breakdown, Peter!! ❤
Such a funny video. Love Clara (the doll) lmao Geoff says she has feelings too lol and the ending had me crying from laughing
"Geoff's voice" - yes, Peter, yes. Voiceplay are very wise to have Geoff narrate all their outros :D
Layne's drum sound is that of a Bodhran, (boran) the Irish hand drum often used by British folk groups. Very fitting for the song. The sixth man is Matthew "Bucky" Buckner who was in the origianl group when they were still called 4:2:Five. He is now a voice over artist and entertainer at Universal Studios Orlando, and host of "Bucky the Gamer Dad" podcast. He also appears in VP's Five Hundred Miles mini. Geoff wrote the bridge section, something he's done a few times lately. They really are in a league of their own, aren't they?
My favourite part of your reactions is when Geoff does something crazy and you flip out, knowing very well what he's capable of. It's funny as good stuff brother
Great reaction video. The look on Geoff's face when he sings the captain's daughter verse 😅
If you didn't know, Voiceplay just put out a new one from the Hunchback of Notre Dame 'Hellfire', and Geoff released 'Jack's Lament' from the Nightmare Before Christmas :)
Great version, great humour, great reaction and analysis
They never make a boring cover that you can be sure of. Nice reaction and love the analysis. The final analogy between the real and instagram is spot on.
Since the original intent of shanties was to coordinate labor on a ship and maintain morale, and they don't really need the labor part, I can 100% say that VoicePlay nailed the morale boost of a shanty.
That’s Bucky. He was in the short they did just before releasing this one. This song is so fun.
Peter: "I hope they get creative"
Me: (knowing what comes next) "yeah, you could call it that."
oh, and subscribed.
Always enjoy your unabashed enthusiasm for Voiceplay and Geoff. Thanx for getting to this one!!
As always, you revealed so much more of the song than I had heard when TH-cam takes me on an acajourney with VP, HF, Ptx, and of course TBG. Did I mention that my husband gifted me a sound bar and subwoofer for Christmas with a sweet note from him? His card says, "Now the gang's all here!"
0:35 "Some artists have attempted this and it's pretty boring" -- Peter, you've got to see the movie Fisherman's Friends (2019) -- based on a true story -- the guys (the fishermen from Cornwall who sing shanties) end up in a bar in London and get the entire pub singing along to Drunken Sailor. It's so fun! And not boring ...
The look on your face when Geoff hit that F1... :)
Very cool to see Geoff write some extra lyrics for this one, it's really awesome to see that continue. As if they needed them to make it any MORE original though!
Awesome reaction/analysis Peter, and I have to say I'm beyond excited for May the Bass be With You Vol 3!!!
8:01 Just listening to this while working, and when getting to this part I was hoping the pit vipers would come out. Never thought I’d be that excited for that part lol, just shouted from excitement. Jeff’s range is crazy!
love them saying that torture is listening to voiceplay! I don’t think so! ❤🏴
Great analysis Peter, as always! Thank you so much for taking time out of your busy schedule to cover this one. You're the best!
Love the fun changes to the song. Delightful!
Terrific R&A! I thought that the pit vipers might not be enough for Geoff’s crazy subs in this one. I’m looking forward to your interview with Layne!
I’m glad you loved this; I did too. So creative!
Just wow! They're amazing :D
Thanks for a great analysis of this inspired remake of Drunken Sailor! It's so fun to see and hear another's appreciation for VoicePlay's genius productions.
Anyone else who tries to make a song their own, it's if VoicePlay is still around.
I've heard this a bunch, and I love it. UT... our obvious pleasure and enjoyment (plus your analysis) made this even better! Thanks, Peter!!
I really liked your Forestella reaction. Other people's reactions usually focus on the tenor's voice first, while you also listen to the bass voice.
So I'd like you to review Inner Universe of the open concert and Lazenca, save us of the immortal songs.
I think Inner Universe is a stage where you can feel the bass's hypoallergenic and countertenor's hypoallergenic sounds very well, so I recommend it! Please listen to the open concert version! And I think Lazenca saveus is also a very attractive stage with bass's voice!
I finally heard your voice singing with the Bass Gang. I love your voice.
I so agree....(I'm sure everyone does) THE BEST Version of this song EVER....LOVED your reaction!! You are so talented also and it's so Fantabulastic that you are genuinely in awe of VoicePlay's productions! Can't wait to catch Layne's interview 😍😁 Thank you for sharing!!!
There's a joke from an old English cartoon show called Danger Mouse, where, in one episode, there's a group trying to bring an Egyptian pharaoh named Upshi back to life. The climax of it ends with the people exclaiming "Wey-hey, and Upshi rises!"
Love it, I’m glad you liked it too! I’m looking very much forward to your chat with Layne!
I just realized this, go back and listen to him talk at the end of bare necessities compared to now, his voice is so much lower
First, algorithm!🤣🤣
Second, I’ve been singing in a Barbershop chorus for a long while and would love to see you react to some barbershop videos. The “Bells of Notre Dame” by the Ringmasters quartet is phenomenal. Another great one is the “From Now On/Come Alive Medley” from the Westminster Chorus is wonderful
Only Voiceplay could take a song like this and make into repeatable airwaves Playlist quality piece. Valhalla came close but I could listen to this all day aside from it getting stuck in my head ... lol.
VoicePlay are the ultimate arrangement remix acappella group.
Voiceplay & Peter-perfection!
So excited for this one!!
So creative! Thanks for breaking it down...really adds to the enjoyment of the song.
07:15 even camera shocked 😆
Your delight in this video is contagious! Thank you for your usual insights - and your glee!
13:29: "Leave a comment for the algorithm" Done lol (just wanted you to know I watched to the end bc my other comments were at the start).
Repetitive song? Geoff will write a bridge for it that sounds like the best part of the song!
And shout out to Layne for the best performance of ‘beatboxing while pissed!’
Want to listen to something unexpected and fun? Look for the videos of Siepi singing Cole Porter, especially "In the Still of the Night." When he hits the reprise, hang onto your safety bar and enjoy the ride. I think you'll love it.
It's so funny, when Geoff goes subharmonic, Peter's camera loses focus every time 😆
I knew Geoff would get a pit viper.
Thank you for another great reaction Pete, you rock!
Was so looking forward to your review of "Drunken Sailor". Made my afternoon, dude!
As soon I heard this song, I knew you would love it. I've been looking forward to this reaction!
This was so fun to see you react to.
Haha I’ve been waiting for you to review this. Haha hopefully you enjoyed it as much as I did.
I’m subscribing so I don’t miss your talk with Layne. I watch your reviews regularly, and appreciate your analysis.
I'm part of the 15%...guy number six is Bucky...I appreciate you breaking down which genre of dance music uses what BPM. Bucky also shows up in other stuff...the shorts cover to I walk five hundred miles
??? Thought I was subscribed. Well there, I fixed that. When you said the G1 was absurdly low, I smiled and thought, "you wait!"
For what it is worth, I have ben subscribed to you for a long time now. I am very happy with subscribing to you. I love getting all the details from someone inside the business per say. Keep up the good work Peter!
Love your reactions! So glad you enjoyed this!
Thank you! I always look forward to your analysis!
Thoroughly enjoyed this!! Great reaction Peter!!
Love the reviews!
