    I’m so happy you did end up filming your analysis on this! (I eagerly await your version!) it’s just all so incredible and they fit in so much, which you breakdown so well🤯 There are so many moments of ‘what is going on’ and I LOVE IT 😂 it’s great watching you find the bass line and focus on what’s going on there or Layne’s crazy sound effects. 👏🏼 fab job!

      I'd love to see a joint reaction to one of Voiceplay/Geoff's songs from you two. I know different time zones makes it difficult but yours are two of the few channels I am subscribed to to see these analyses, along with Mortius and The Charismatic Voice. Learning a lot about acapella and music in general (didn't know much until I started watching your reactions).

    17:45 I'm pretty sure it's ingressive phonation on Layne's part. It's a pretty common technique in beatbox, and I've heard it (and done it myself, badly) quite a few times!

      I agree. Layne has done the before

    • @jonadabtheunsightly
      @jonadabtheunsightly 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yeah, I think it may also be related somehow to the thing he does at 23:04, from which Peter pulls out the snort, but there's more than that just going on. I call the whole thing "Layne's beatboxing warthog impression that he does in Enemy".

  • @kashtonhansen2766
    @kashtonhansen2766 2 ปีที่แล้ว +24

  • @jmbmusic1
    @jmbmusic1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Thank you so much for reacting to this one! It‘s in my top three VoicePlay Covers ever easily. The amount of greatness and cool moments in here is just mind boggling! You were right about some of the low G1‘s and F#1‘s being subs AND some being chest. You can hear the difference in the ‚weight‘ or the ‚punch’ of the notes. The chest note just hit you more intensely than the subharmonics. I think the one beatbox sound by Layne before one of the verses was an ingressive note I‘m pretty sure. And the suuuuuuper low slide at the end by Geoff ended on a quick A0! It‘s a chest slide that transitions into a growl or subharmonic slide (there’s a bit of a debate going on wether it‘s growl or subs). The blend between the two slides is of course hidden by some fantastic audio engineering.

    Geoff might not be the lowest or the loudest but, his "cut" in his voice is amazing. His lower notes A-G sound a lot better than some other bass singers. No hate, just my opinion. Everybody has there signature sound.

    Im here for the epic breakdowns. I feel theres no need to apologize as I assume a breakdown is about 5 minutes per minutes of the music. Especially in acapella because theres no instruments. Id watch the breakdown of this video for an hour no prob. There was so much going on. Geoffs high note was also epic and I hope you heard it but didnt comment.

  • @christinestromberg4057
    @christinestromberg4057 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    That sound is either a very low belch or a lion who wandered in. Lions make sounds like that. :) Have you heard their Dream On yet? Cesar does that very note. Geoff ends on a C1 in his latest solo Way Down. He said it took him 80 attempts to do it. :)

    • @maeco7
      @maeco7 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      And he clarified in his recent webchat that it didn't take 80 takes just to hit the note, because that alone isn't a problem - it took 80 takes to get a musical tone out of it rather than it just sounding like a croak or burp. I guess we take for granted how easy he makes it seem in videos!

    Love this and your analysis. Have learned so much listening to your channel. When I was trained in voice (70s) girls were not encouraged to explore how deep there voice could go. It was unthinkable. You became an Alto because you just couldn't hack it as a Soprano. I have had so much fun exploring the deeper side of my range. Conversely it has also had the effect of extending my range upward too. I have been hitting high notes that I haven't hit since I was 20. It has reignited my love of singing.

    What a fun way to listen to music that I otherwise would not have appreciated the creative, innovative vocal acrobatics except with your close focus on individual performances coalescing into the 'whole'. • @lkayh
      @lkayh 2 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Right? I think part of the problem is there are a lot of notes, both high and low, were we actually do not see whoever it is singing it. I know one reactor wondered if maybe Eli took over going into that high riff, so maybe the reason nobody is mentioning it is they’re not quite sure it’s Geoff. (It is-he’s gone into the 5th octave in other songs as well.) Same with some of the lower notes that are less vocals than just really unusual sounds. Just about the time you’re sure it’s Geoff making all of them then we SEE Layne making one.
      It’s GOTTA be interesting living in Layne’s house. I have this suspicion that he walks around making experimental noises quite a lot.

      @@Melisendre He does _eventually_ hand it off to Alexa, but not until he has already gone way up into the countertenor range and held it for a bit. The "My enem-EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-eee-eee-eeeeeee" part is all Geoff, _then_ (at about 21:00 or 21:01) he hands the high part off to AleXa and returns to the subwoofer cave from whence he came.

    That closed e vowel you were talking about at 16:04 is one of several examples in this song that feel too my linguistic degree ears as artifacts from her K-Pop style. That very open vowel you demonstrated sounded very much like the kind of transatlantic vocalization that comes from a native English speaker's native accent being swallowed in the open vowel. AleXa is at least bilingual, I believe, English and Korean, but when she sings I can definitely hear hints of the Korean, which I suspect she does deliberately. From my own experience using singing as a first step to picking up a new language's vowel sounds, closed vowels are easier to flavor with the accent.

    @Peter Barber I think I know what 16:30 is, as you said it may have been Geoff just pitched down but it also may have been layne’s inward bass, a lot of competitive beatboxers use inward bass, but I personally haven’t heard enough of laynes inward bass to see if it is or not, he has done it in the past but usually a bit higher, only example I know of is at the end of
    sh-boom

    That crazy sound at 17:38 seems like it's probably just inhale bass with minimal editing, after just a minute of playing around it's pretty easy to recreate

    At 1: 34 in the original (th-cam.com/video/yR7caU0R__E/w-d-xo.html ), a split second before Geoff starts his solo, I'm hearing what sounds like a soft D1 growl...? Anyone else hearing that?

    the sound effect that you weren't sure about was an inhale sound effect from Laine.

    When you listen the karaoke especially, I'm pretty sure all F#1's are chest, only the F1 on his "enemy" after the first chorus is sub.

    24:54 Im a baritone that can chest down to a Eb and belt full chest up to a d5 when im warmed up. Idk if there is different techniques required from opera singers that isnt found in pop singing

    Peter, did you finally get acclimated to the lack of humidity? I don't detect any throat irritation that you were experiencing not too long ago. 😊
    Great analysis, I can see why you could keep adding to this one. There were so many parts to hear and I could listen to this cover hundreds of times and still hear a new detail. It's astounding what acapella artists can do.

    "Crazy sound effect" @17:33
    I know there's a term for this, but breathing inward while talking/singing for lower notes, but NOT subs (Layne is doing this) saying the word *"dang!"* . There's no modulation. It's pure vocal. And he likely did it IN WITH the beat boxing.

    17:45 I'm pretty sure it's ingressive phonation on Layne's part.
