    Chris I just finished my rebuild of my t56 for my Pontiac GTO and I couldn't have done it without your help. The tremec t56 manual is pretty vague in some areas but your videos got me through it thanks again for saving me about $1000 at the shop

    I have been a jet engine and aircraft mechanic most of my life. F-18, 747, you name it. This was very impressive. Not a gearbox mechanic even though jet engines have gear boxes, they don't change gears. Very cool. Peace.

    Thanks for the video, Chris, I am doing the same thing to my 1St Gen right now, and it was good for me as the last time I did a complete T56 build was in 2005...

    Odd question here..
    I'm looking to build a short transmission without the tail end on for my model A which I'll make an adapter for a clam shell to run the torque tube on. So I have a T170 from a ford F150 1985 (3+OD) and I want to know if a main shaft from a T176 (from a Jeep J10, CJ7, J20...) will work in the T170 ?
    thanks

    At 5:23 the gear that you just slid off Is stuck on my T56, I have tried heat, a puller and multiple different prying solutions. Any ideas?

    • @SlideruleRacingProducts
      @SlideruleRacingProducts  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is a special GM puller for the 5/6 gear if that's the one you're referring to. Aside from using the GM puller arms with a hydraulic puller and some heat, then the next step for me would be a trans shop unfortunately. Good luck.

    Many thanks for this, at the moment I have a t56 which makes noise all but when I push the clutch pedal in (i.e disengage the clutch). When I drained the fluid it came out dark gray/almost black by the way. This leads me to believe that there is alot of friction in the parts and thus alot of wear on them as well. I've never torn a transmission apart nor do I know what to look for when I do so. But hopefully, these videos will help.

    Question? If I’m just wanting to replace my flint plate would I still need to disassemble the transmission to this level or could I just remove the bolts holding the faceplate on like you did I. The beginning and swap it over?

    • @SlideruleRacingProducts
      @SlideruleRacingProducts  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not sure.. getting the new one back on might be tricky and you won't have set the clearances correctly to the plate.

    • @GetItAtWiLL
      @GetItAtWiLL 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chris Bruno aye yea that is right. I have a TR6060 but it’s the one with the front plate and bell house in one and I need the one with the separated bellhousing and front plate. I may just get the tools to clearance it properly or take it to a shop 😭😭

  • @munibnajib3068
    @munibnajib3068 ปีที่แล้ว

    Need a huge favour. You seem to know the TR6060 really well. I needed to pull out only the input shaft. I know on the older T56 you can just take the front cover off and remove the input shaft. I know on the TR6060 input shaft, the gear (4th gear) has a lip/flange which sits being the counter shaft gear which makes it harder to remove, but ive heard its still possible with a little “wiggle wiggle”. Can you confirm if I can remove the input shaft on the TR6060 without a complete teardown and just remove it from the front?

  • @ktriebol
    @ktriebol 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I may have missed it, but why are you doing this rebuild? Did you experience some noise or poor shift quality? I know in part 2 you mentioned a bad fit with the 5&6 gear on the shaft, but don't say that was the reason you performed the rebuild.

    • @SlideruleRacingProducts
      @SlideruleRacingProducts  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It was having trouble engaging in certain shifts. I expected to find the synchros trashed, but as you can see, they weren't. I ended up needing to replace the clutch master cylinder - that was the root cause of everything. Of course, had I replaced that first, then I wouldn't have made these videos!

    I know the video is older but I'm curious, which puller is that? I found the otc 1040 to be the largest so far but wasn't for sure which one you used.

      Thanks for the info! I'm in the process of tearing mine down and the last gear on the main shaft before pulling the casing is where I'm stuck at. I see yours pulled right off without a puller. Im going to check their website and see if they have it available

    56 sec mark; The breather tube. Any chance you know were I can purchase the breather cap? In the process of swapping to an LS7 Clutch and was looking to see if there was anything worth rebuilding while I had it out, but will probably just stick to replacing the missing cap Ha.
    The Car does make some grumbly swirly noise at Idle with the clutch out; Not sure if that will be resolved by the new LS7 slave, or if the noise is coming from worn components in the trans.
    Thanks

    AAIIIC from cadillacforums - I've had your rebuild thread on standby ever since you posted it up and then did these videos. Just getting started with a used CTS-V T56 that I picked up to rebuild.
    I knocked off the nut on the output shaft with an impact. I noticed you used a 3-jaw puller to get the output flange off, and it looks like it took some work. On mine, that output flange slipped right off by hand. Is that a bad sign? Should it be a press fit onto the splines, thus requiring a puller of some sort?

    • @SlideruleRacingProducts
      @SlideruleRacingProducts  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey AAIIC. Hopefully by now you've figured this out - sorry I took so long to respond. In any case, if it wobbles on the output shaft I would probably be worried, but otherwise you're probably OK. I honestly wasn't expecting mine to put up such a fight, but it seemed comical to me when I did the editing so I left it in there.

    I did not know that Tremec T-56 was made by Borg-Warner. Is it true? I had a Borg-Warner factory 5 speed in a 1976 Pontiac Ventura that I factory ordered. I kept it for 19 years and it was great. No issues ever, but I knew guys that destroyed them fast. Helps if you know how to drive I guess.

      This video was my first and only time rebuilding a car manual trans. In pretty much all my videos, I'm learning as I go. Sometimes I edit out some of my trial and error, but most of the time I leave it in. For this rebuild, I read A LOT online and in the factory manuals before I started. I also had a lot of experience tearing apart motorcycle transmissions, so the basic functionality wasn't foreign to me.
