Making good progress on the car! Also, today is the one-year anniversary of my Drift vlog! Thank you all for being a part of it, let’s have an even better year this time!❤️💯❤️
Oh, I'm sorry, jeeze... cause that guy working on the trans seemed to really know his stuff, I just wanted to hear everything he had to say. very helpful, Thank you for sharing so much info. I'll be referring back to that video quite a bit, Thank you for making it
I love the T-56 ! I have never owned an automatic car, and have never destroyed a manual transmission. That is because I do not race, but the main reason is, I rev match each gear up and down. Do that, and they will last the life of the car. The advantage of being a pro long haul driver I guess. The bad part of this is, these nice transmission overhaul guys would go out of business.
Doug Stern I hear you! I rev match even when racing, but bought this transmission used with 110K and it was already grinding a bit...I was just glad to get a few years out of it before I had to do the rebuild. It’s doing great ever since, thanks for the comment!✌🏻
I'm glad to hear that you rev match, but I have no idea how you can do that when racing. In racing you just jamb it as fast as you can and worry about the synchros later. If you win the race and get the big bucks you can afford to rebuild the transmission next month. Rev matching is for normal street driving....racing....not so much. Most guys have no idea what rev matching is or how to do it, and after destroying a few manual boxes they just get an automatic. Driving a stick is a lost art.
Doug Stern for drag I’m sure that’s true! I do drift and grip where I try to shift quickly but can’t risk a mid-shift or transmission damage ending the day early. Hell toe downshifts help a lot as well :) I really enjoyed seeing this rebuild, learned a lot (though I how I don’t have to put that knowledge to use any time soon haha)
I'm a long haul trucker and I drive multispeed transmissions. I always heel and toe for all downshifts in a truck and I do it without the clutch. That does not work so well with my 6 speed car. However I do usually double clutch my car downshifts. I also double clutch my upshifts on cold mornings for the first 2 or 3 minutes. 1st to 2nd is a wide RPM split on my car and the synchros can't handle it with cold oil. Cold double clutching those first shifts makes it so much easier, and my transmission will last the life of the car.
Yeah, it was a win-win: I got a proper education on how everything goes together and TDP has told me they still get business from people who hit them up after discovering this video 👌🏻
Got copyright claimed for the BGM about a year after I published it, that’s why the audio is muted part way through. I may go back through my archives and try to find what I’d need to recut and reupload it 😵
Maybe a stupid question, but I'm assuming the "don't rest your hand on the shifter" doesn't apply when the shifter isn't directly connected to the trans, i.e. FWD, right? Apart from reinforcing bad behavior lol
ghharg2 that’s a great question, I’m not sure about FWDs...it definitely has to do with that direct connection and the contact area/material that the shift fork pads are made of, for transmissions that use them. I’ll ask around and reply if I stumble upon more info, or maybe someone else can share what they know here in the comments.😀
BoostedMotorsports thank you! If you have a press and a shim kit I think it’s doable, but I can o my way that after seeing a rebuild in person haha! Glad it helped you out! :)
I’ve been using the trans as assembled ever since, I just raced it last month 👍🏻 That said, they used silicone on the areas where the housings meet and stuff, all the usual places. The reassembly footage was sped up so maybe something happened off camera…
eXite Video Magazine yeah those are neat looking swaps; my teammate Zach has one in his S13 SR track car, though I haven’t had a chance to drive it yet.
Yeah, for sure! I’m definitely glad I took it to the pros, I’d heard great things about TDP and they delivered, super nice guys! Although after seeing it done, I think I could manage to do a rebuild if I had instructions and a press👍
Yeah, it’s been doing great and I continue driving the car pretty hard pretty regularly with no issues. I’m not a drag racer so it’s not like I only do hard launches and fast shifts, but I drift the car at 8 hour day events about 8-10 times per year and everything has held solid 👌🏻
I love nothing more than watching a Master Technician work….I wanna rebuild my old LT 1 T-56…I just don’t wanna spend a ton of money on this old cruiser…
Yeah it was really insightful to see the process, and gave me confidence that I could do a lot the job if I ever needed to. Though I’d have to buy a press 😅
Thank you for these videos! I have been following you for some time now, your content is very informative and always interesting. I do have a question, I have a t56 in my jzx90 drift car. I was wondering what oil you use in your t56 gearbox for drifting?
Chase Prollock hey Chase! Man it’s been a wild time! I changed so much of the suspension and front steering (as you may see from my other videos) that the car was down a LONG time and I basically drove it for the first time last weekend! I still have to call Jason and let him know it’s back together, everything worked fine last event🤘
I was figuring to swap my car for a ls,that i will use for drifting but is the t56 feels right for drift? Because i hear a lot of people saying that it's just like were shifting in a truck.
Merlin 2002 that’s a good question, it’s never bothered me at least😅 I think a lot of that is a matter of preference, mine with the stock shifter feels like the stock shifting on most cars, nothing special (or awful) Maybe you can drive a Camaro or another car with a T56 before you buy and see how it feels to you? If you were around here I’d let you check mine out 😄👍
qxANGELxp if it was a new OEM grade T56 I’d opt for improving the internals some for that much power. If it’s already strengthened you’re probably good. You might call your local T56 experts or TDP themselves and see what they recommend, but there are for sure some things you’d want improved over the stock T56.
Faye Turner hey thank you for the comment! I cut parts of this video to keep it moving along...I looked up a video to make sure I had a good idea of what shimming the main and countershaft looks like. TBH I don’t recall seeing the countershaft get shimmed but I could have missed it (I took a break to get some food once things were apart and before starting the reassembly time lapse) I know input shaft play was checked and shimmed.✌️
School or just repatition doing these T-56 s? One manual I want to learn. Besides tic welding and lathing,. I looks like you can rebuild it actually pretty fast. Great job.
I'm not sure about TDP's training, they do an excellent job but wouldn't be surprised if it's just from a ton of life experience. It's so cool they can do a same-day rebuild on a Saturday if you drive your pulled transmission down to them. Sorry I missed your comment initially and had this slow reply.
Daniel Bravo hey thanks for the comment! The baseline price for the upgrade package was ~$1200. I had a fair amount of worn gears on top of the upgrade package so overall I paid about $1750. I’m back on the road now and it drives great!
rcguy86 hey thanks for watching and dropping a comment🙌🏻 I would recommend this shop, I did plenty of research before deciding to work with them and I think TDP is top notch! Cost will always depend on what’s broken but the baseline price for the upgrade package was ~$1200. I had a fair amount of worn gears on top of the upgrade package that I chose to replace so overall I paid about $1750. I’m back on the road now and it drives great! 2 years of drifting later and I have no issues. It’s also pretty cool that they let me drive the trans down and busted this out in a couple hours on a Saturday👌🏻
Don Ammon that’s a great question, but it would probably be best to ask TDP directly...I went to them cause I don’t know enough to do this work myself and I don’t want to give you bad info😅😅😅 FWIW they’re at 817-508-8710✌🏻
Kenneth Triebold To be honest I’m not sure off the top of my head, but 13:25 covers what was replaced. I don’t recollect him saying anything was worn on the countershaft gear set...sorry I don’t have a better answer for you 😅
@@KameTrick I didn't see the countershaft gear set listed among the replacement parts, so they probably re-used the old one. Those gears don't wear much, and they don't even have any action during shifts. They may have replaced the bearings, though, as long as they had it all apart.
Kenneth Triebold yeah I’m pretty sure they didn’t replace those gears, they’d have charged me for them and I’d have listed them if so. Bearings were re-used as well, didn’t show any signs of wear. At this point I’m 1 year later and probably 10 drift events on the trans with no issues👌🏻
Need help removing 5th n 6th. Gear drive stick won’t come off do they make pullers for this I can’t a puller that’s will work on what I’m trying do thanks great video btw
Kame Trick thanks yeahh I seen his slid right off mine is down to that part now but won’t cone off my 5th n 6th gear has broken teeth on it n gears have turned purple any suggestions?
Derek White purple? 😬 sounds like it got real hot or something...I took mine to a trans rebuilder because I don’t know the right answer for stuff like that TBH. You could call TDP and have them sell you that part maybe?
John Spencer I’m not a transmission expert but check out 04:11 If you have a T56 and you’re confident it’s only happening in 6th (or 5th and 6th) and it’s not something outside the trans like a tire or driveshaft that’s out of balance/bushing that gets vibration at high speeds, it could be the 5-6 mainshaft journals. Those are a press fit from the factory and evidently they wear down over time and gradually get loose. They’re supposed to require a hydraulic press to remove but you can see Chase effortlessly pull mine out, so mine was definitely going bad (although I hadn’t noticed any major vibrations yet) Evidently you can weld additional material onto the shaft and then turn it down in a lathe to the correct clearances again. It could be it’s fully worn down and yours is really loose in there now. Good luck!👍
John Spencer ah right on...I’d be curious if that press fit is worn down the the gear is rattling around on the journal. Texas Drivetrain Performance took good care of me and with an event on the motor (video coming later this week) I think everything is good to go on my project👌
Depends on the damage of course, and what you want to upgrade. Mine ran me about 2700, that was pre-pandemic economy though so who know what it would be these days 🤷🏻♂️ Call em and ask, Jason & co are good people ✌🏻 If you do, tell em I sent you :)
Still running in this same T56, no problems yet. I did install a lightweight flywheel and 6 puck clutch last year. Here’s how we’re getting on these days: th-cam.com/video/xny9dY_kiiU/w-d-xo.html
