    I always get really loud when I belt out high notes.
    your advice to do it quietly is the best thing I've been told. I tried it out and it actually adds a lot more rasp to my voice and hurts way less :)

    Exactly my experience!
    Three years ago I atended classes at voice teacher who comes from classicall world. He insisted on vocalizing and exercising at full volume. After half hour he would ask me to sing a song. Once I lost range and resonance. His answer was that my voice got tired, and that I must aquire "condition". I stopped going to classes.
    last few weeks I started to talk (and pray for what is worth) in higher pitch than my regular speaking (chest) voice - but at lower volume, very gently. In my disbelief, I started to develop head voice and very quickly. So I started to do exercises once more in same manner, mid volume while leaving vocal weight (I have underdeveloped head register), and my voice starts to blossom in beautiful way, resonant and nice.

    You're saying we won't see progress after a long time but I only did your exercise for my voice type (pulled chest -high larynx) and there's already so much relief in my throat. I can feel my vocal chords get thinner and it's way more comfortable. I used to have like this huge wall in my throat and it was honestly causing me trouble talking and even trouble breathing properly at times. But I feel so much better just doing the exercise once, I can't wait to see how much it'll help in the long run. I mean I was worried I might have permanent damage on my vocal chords so it's also a huge relief emotionally. The exercises really work and it's pretty easy to tell.

    I'm getting rid of an ear infection, and it seems like everything is connected. It actually affected my singing. This is great, and it will help me! Thank you for this. I'm 53 so I have to be careful. I don't want to screw up my voice.

    Thanks chuck , you are a life saver . I always had problem with my mixed voice and my voice sounded hoarse and husky cause I was always trying to sing high notes in my chest voice . I was having pitch problems and short of breathness too. But slowly I’m improving as I’m learning how to sing in mix and head voice . Thanks a lot chuck

    Practice softly is not necessary good. One can close the throat and larynx muscles a lot when singing soft. It can actually be very harmful.

      Thanks Adrian: I suppose the key is, as you say, "one can close the throat and larynx muscles a lot when singing"...I would add either loud or soft. As Seth Riggs says, Practice "Mezzo forte (medium loud) at the loudest. However, you must never forget why you practice exercises. You do so to set up the correct balance between your exhaled air and your vocal cords, allowing you to sing at a speech level, and to then have your neuromuscular system live with that balance. As far as volume goes, you should only sing as loudly as you are able to maintain your balance with a steady, normal vibrato..." Singing for the Stars pp 83.

    Good video. Your brain needs time to learn. Patience is everything. I used to sing too loud and I still have this tendency. I'm working regularly on my vocals and there is a little improvement. I practice with song and pick out the hard parts.

    Thanks for a great channel and really helpful stuff!
    I was defined as Pulled chest/high larynx. So the dedicated exercises for this voice type will go on repeat here, I`ll tell you that! Strangely, since I strive for a bright and sharper sound I still keep holding my resonance back into my chest and often using too much compression sounding like a "roaming cow" in the upper range...As opposed to that desired brighter nasal head resonance tone that I want to add to my palate
    I also thought that a higher positioned larynx would contribute to a sharp and edgy tone in general, but apparently, for me that causes more strain going up the range.
    Thank you so much for these insights, and helpful exercises dedicated to certain voice types! From now on I will go outside my comfort zone by relying on that my head voice will solve many issues that have been a part of a sound that I never really have been comfortable with and have been using frequently way too much of for far too long.

      Thanks, Hans: In the end, the closer we get to a natural, unmanipulated, unmanufactured sound, the less tension is present and the more we sound like we speak...which is a good thing!

    Hi Chuck, one thing I can suggest is to practice with relax throat,lips, tongue necck, shoulders muscles to sing with eas . Because I practice it and I can sing very high.. most importantly, your spinal cord and base of our head should be relaxed..

    So, I'm a fairly experienced singer. I am most definitely not a pro, but I think I'm pretty good at singing, but there's still something bugging me. I doubt that it helps, but I am a 16 (almost 17) year-old tenor, and I sing pretty much daily. I have the basics down to a science; resonance point is pretty consistent, vibrato control is on point, I can mix pretty well and can mix beyond just the bridge (I can mix to the G sharp above middle C down to about B below middle C), my vocal endurance is pretty decent, I don't pull any chest (anymore at least), and in general I think my singing is pretty on point...
    But whenever I sing beyond middle C, my larynx rises and my outer neck muscles engage. My singing doesn't begin to sound strained or anything, and I don't feel very tense, but based on your videos, both of these signs generally mean something not too good. I've sung all the way to C5 (I belted the notes beyond the bridge to up to C5 to see if that had an affect), and every note beyond my "growly voice" (the notes that are REALLY low for a tenor like most of the notes below A3) sounded fine, but my outer neck muscles engaged and my larynx rose. My previous vocal type was pulled chest/high larynx, so it might just be that I haven't completely gotten rid of the high larynx aspect yet, but I would really like to know just what the heck is going on with that.       It's just habit. Or you're pulling and you don't know it. I've had a lot of 16-18-18 year olds who sing pretty well, but they've struggled getting over the habit of reaching up. It takes a concerted effort to stop it. Sometimes the best help is singing in front of a mirror...over and over... and not allowing yourself to grab. Create new muscle memory by refusing to reach up. You can do it!

      Power To Sing if I'm pulling chest, then it really doesn't feel like it. it feels like mixing, just a little tense (not in the inner neck, those muscles are completely relaxed). Again, the sound isn't really strained or anything like pulled chest (I know fully well what pulled chest sounds like thanks to being one of two trained male singers at my high school). I could send a recording of my singing once I have some time and see if it sounds anything like pulled chest though.

    Hi, I know this video is a few years old, but I've been using all the tips you have said. I do daily excercises (Chest, head, resonance, etc). My question is, should I be doing all those excercises in all dopey and bratty sounds? Or just for the "nae" and "ge" sounds you showed us in the video. Thank you for your time

      Just do the exercises as shown. Discontinue the exaggerated sounds as soon as you are able to get through the bridge without straining, cracking, breaking or falsetto. Get to normal tones ASAP.

    I have a gig in 7 days but have strained my vocal chords through a mixture of over practice and getting over a bad chest infection - doctor gave me corticosteroids for 5 days to try to calm inflammation. Currently can hit low notes but no high notes and could no way do gig at this points. Any tips welcome to speed recovery in time for gig!! 🥺

      No Alex. You will need to cancel the gig...and give you cords plenty of rest and time to heal. Sorry...but the worst thing you can do is sing with this injury. You risk making it worse if you do. Good luck

    I'd be interested if you could do a video on songs one could use when practising specific things. For example I find it helpful to sing Genesis' Land of Confusion if I'm finding it hard to locate my mixed voice, or Chicago's Your the inspiration if I'm trying to work on singing in head voice without sounding artificial. Do you have songs you use in practice sessions, to test or discover certain techniques?

    Is it okay to flip into fauceto when doing exercises?

      Good question. In my opinion, no. When your tone breaks into falsetto, there's a reason. Usually it's because the larynx is coming up and the chest voice is also being pulled too high. Or, a singer just is letting go and a switching into falsetto because he/she hasn't learned how to transition into a connected head voice. Connected head voice can do more than falsetto, is healthier for the voice and will help you build your voice.       The thing you want to be aware of is locking your cords very tight and grunting when you lift heavy weight. When I lift I try not to over due the my cord closure. But I have on science to back up my opinion. I just think it's best not to lock the cords too tight...I feel like my voice feels better if I try not to do that.

    Hi chuck the bratty Nay sound raises the larynx my view is the singer /student needs to experience the feeling of singing high notes with a low larnyx!. Head voice chest voice gives the wrong impression to a beginning student that theres separate voices that need to connect for singing success , I disagree with the use of these terms cause it causes confusion !. There is one voice the voice you talk in and that voice the student needs to experience singing real words with a low larynx the transfer of resonance is a result of a larynx at rest. Just my thoughts I enjoy all your videos and congratulate you on your terrific enthusiasm.

      Hi Kelvin. I agree. In my hands, the temporary use of ney is to connect the tone and build confidence in the singer. As soon as they can connect the tone from low notes to high notes, we discontinue the exaggerated Ney. I also use a dopey gee, goo, and others which lowers the larynx...the objective always being to developing a balanced voice. I also discontinue the exaggerated dopy sound when it serves the purpose. The majority of my students struggle singing from low to high voice and feel and sound like they have two different voices....even though it is only one voice. Once they learn to connect the low and high voice by learning to bridge, and mix, they begin to experience their voice as a unified whole with an uncluttered and unmanufactured speech like singing voice.     Good advice sir, and obviously from the Seth Riggs school of thought. Any practical vibrato tips? We notice tons of myths, misconceptions on the subject, or ignoring the subject entirely. Even the Great Seth kind of blows it on explaining/teaching this one, no?

      (after watching your vibrato lesson) You're killin' me Chuck, waving those fingers, clasping the shaking hands, and then that "whole-tone trill" thing . . . why do you guys get on to these crazy detours? And who by the way really wants a "natural" vibrato that kicks in constantly? Only opera & Broadway type-singers. Sorry, no disrespect, but the only practical tip is where you show the half-step-down pitch relaxation. But why not explain that half-step, and methodically progress from slow regular oscillations to faster ones? We teach wind-strument players and singers alike, simply by slowly working this into their daily routine. The most telling part of your demo is where you sing your "whole-tone trill," and then proceed to sing with a normal half-step-down vibrato. Well, Mr. Riggs calls it a "whole-tone trill," and also "spinning" and of course vibrato is neither!

    I always your tips richly insightful and meaningful...with the first tip of yours though I have the opposite problem...I tend to sing too quietly since I live in a very un-sound proof house to not risk people hearing me.
    So can I ask a question for anyone willing to answer...that is, is it possible to practise high notes very softly? Not to mean this video wasn't enough or anything, the things you described are relatable and I learnt more than what I expected...

      Sure you can practice quietly. But you will eventually have to practice medium to medium loud....at least as loud as you will perform. I've had students who practice in the car.

      @@raylene3418 If we are to have full control of our singing, there are times we must be able to sing loudly...forte or fortissimo, just as we must be able to sing soft or very soft. Otherwise, we are limited.

      This has reference to the exaggerated tones only. The exercises are done in special ways that cause them to work with your voice. If you disregard this and do them your way, they likely won’t work.The batty sound helps “thin” the vocal cords and tone. They don’t work if you do the exercise with a normal voice and too loud. The dopy sound stretches the vocal cords with a lower larynx. They don’t work if you lose the dopy sound and use your normal voice.

      Hi Sandy: You don't sing with your stomach. You sing with your vocal cords. It is possible to have some added breathing support using the diaphragm.       Jas Ad. You need to be able to match the pitch of the music with your voice. If you can't match the pitch with your voice, it's possible, but very challenging to learn to sing and will likely take years with hours of practice.     I don't really like my voice much, it's lower and soft kinda wish I could sing higher sometimes.

      You can learn to sing stronger and higher! You just don't know how thats all.🙂

    since following the SLS method (speech level singing) with an Italian singing teacher I can sing much more easily what once caused tension on the vocal cords. Your exercises, Chuck, also related to the songs (sometimes replacing the words of the song with the "ney" for example) makes things much easier. Your advice (the same as my master's) makes my vocal cords feel really good but above all I get joy when I sing.
