This shows the diference between a game franchise that launches a rushed title every year and one that cares about making a perfect game before releasing it. Valve has few games but damm they are good for sure.
I finished portal 2 for the first time on its 10th birthday although I’d had it since 2012. That song always brings back so many happy memories of my childhood.
There are 3 endings to Portal... First, you feel closure and happiness after you made peace with GLaDOS. Then you get the Turret opera, a mixed feelings song that makes you shed tears... And then you're hit in the guts by Wheatley monologue. Starts crying like a baby.
The song hits a lot closer to home when you remember that Portal 2 was Valve's last great Narrative Game before they started turning to Steam full-time. The song isn't just a farewell to Chell or the Portal Franchise. It's a farewell to the end of an era for Valve.
GlaDOS basically killed everyone during Bring Your Daughter To Work Day, and Chell was preserved by her cryo sleep. I also have a feeling GlaDOS kept her alive because she's Caroline, and a theory I have accepted is that Chell is Caroline's daughter. Just my two cents :).
Portal: the game series that about solving puzzles with silly humor that ends with a tearful powerhouse of an operatic Aria performed by the series' main antagonist who was a cold, calculating, and heartless, machine but sings like a fucking angel
Some of the lyrics to this tune actually prove that Caroline is still inside GLaDOS somewher, ever after she was supposedly deleted. And no I am not forgetting that this song is technically GLaDOS saying good bye to Chell once and for all. Besides, I really don't think that GLaDOS can delete Caroline without deleting heself, seeing ashow they are technically one and the same person.
I know this is old, but I like to think that Caroline being Chell's mother, and Chell discovering the extremely sad story of Glados, is the very reason that a mother would PRETEND to delete Caroline. She's trying to ensure that her daughter never comes back to try to save her. Could also explain why this is the only song in another language from Chell's. It's a last, sad goodbye, but Chell will never know.
I know this is even older than when *cxx23* posted but man, that makes so much sense and it's even more emotional. (I just finished Portal 2 btw, that's why I'm so late. Better later than never ¯\_(ツ)_/¯).
oh ciel - short for oh cielo - is a way of saying "oh gosh" . the entire song is literally just the glados actor improv-ing opera. for anyone else reading xP
I finished Portal 2 today, and nearly cried seeing this. The idea of GLaDOS deciding "You know what? I'm gonna do one last nice thing for her." got me really emotional.
Portal 2 is true masterpiece, a work of art that stirs up your emotions and makes its fans remember it for decades. Nowadays games are rushed and mostly garbage. People have forgotten how to make a good game. This last farewell is the most beautiful scene I have ever seen in a video game, and I will remember it forever.
It's not that. It's what remains of Caroline giving Chell, her daughter, one final send-off into the world above- Telling her not to come back to the facility so she does not face further harm or, god forbid, go down the same path as her.
@@Daybreak81523 Where in canon lore does the game state that Caroline is Chell's mother? I've replayed the game 8 times, no lie, and haven't found anything that hints at them being related. I'm not saying you're wrong, I just don't know how you got that connection.
Amazing opera pun at 1:04 "oh ciel!" is a common opera lyric meaning "oh heavens!", but Ellen McLane puts just enough "chu" on the word to make it sound like "Chell"

@@terrestrialcreature7481 Actually, doesn't it make sense for the turrets to be blind when the laser isn't on? Throughout both games, the turrets only stop shooting at the player once the laser shuts off. Either the laser is required for them to see, or it is just on while they are doing so, because the times they can see and the times they have the laser on always match up perfectly.
Bruh to this day, this song still hits so strangely hard on me, it all feels just as it was inteded, as saying your final goodbyes to an old friend, knowing that you are never going to see each other, but only for the good of both of you Im not crying, you are (or well, maybe i am crying just a bit)

Mi kid started playing half-life2 around 5 or 6 years old. Obviously it was hard for him at the time. By watching youtube videos about half-life and others he knew about Portal and Portal 2, and a few months later he started playing this song a lot, almost daily, at bed time, for months. We didn't had the game at that time, my computer was crap to run it anyway. Years went by and during pandemic we saw it on Steam, bought it and we started playing together, he was 12 at the time. One day I was playing the game on my own when I reached the final, suddenly this song started playing and I started crying. My son came from his room moved by the song and he started dropping tears with me. My deepest thanks to this game artists for this wonderful and moving piece of brilliance.
Can't believe I haven't heard it all these years, but at 0:56, she takes a f@cking breath. And you can hear it. I know it is possible they left it in by accident, but it feels so significant. Like you are meant to hear that the soulless machine that spends its time shooting you actually takes a breath. That the thing you considered nothing but a mindless killing machine actually has to get ready, taking a breath that sounds sorrowful, like she doesn't want you to leave...
The only part in a video game where I got sad and almost cried. I loved portal, the story was there but something about this song is... different I can't explain it. This is really sad and if your one of those people who skips the end credits and stuff go back. Replay the entire game if you have too it's worth every second. P.S. GLaDos is Chel's mother
This remind me of the first time I finished portal 2. During this song,I was happy, and sad at the same time. It was ameazing. I felt like i accomplished something special.... Idk what to say.
This song will NEVER fail to make me bawl my eyes out. Music has always been able to make me emotional, but this in particular, it brings back so many memories of the first time I finished portal 2 at 12 years old and realised this was something special
God, I still remember finishing my first playthrough of this amazing game, being surprised that Glados said she was done trying to kill me, rising up in that elevator just to be greeted by 4 turrets. The first thought in my mind was "oh you cheeky bitch, you got me" but instead of being shot to death I was serenaded by one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard. Then I found the English translation of the lyrics not too long after, and heard the fan theory about Caroline being Chels mom and I'm gonna need more than a moment to compose myself, I'll need all the moments, excuse me.
Cara bella, cara mia bella Mia bambina, o ciel Ché la stimo Ché la stimo O cara mia, addio La mia bambina cara, Perché non passi lontana? Sì, lontana da scïenza Cara, cara mia bambina? Ah, mia bella Ah, mia cara Ah, mia cara Ah, mia bambina O cara, cara mia Mia cara Ah, mia cara Ah, mia bambina O cara, cara mia
I feel invalid bc I didn’t cry during the ending. I was sad that the game was over, and a little sad about the ending, but I think I was just to overjoyed with happiness about the fact that the adorable little turrets were singing for me!! look at them go!! I love them sm. I finished the game like 2 days ago for the first time. And looking back I actually did feel kind of sad but not to the point of tears
Fun/Weird Fact: The line at 1:06, while written in Italian is phonetically identical to the Spanish phrase "Que lastima", meaning "What a shame". This is most definitely unintentional but I still thought it was cool enough to comment on
As an Italian who speaks English as his second language I want to provide all of you whit an accurate traduction of the song Cara Mia Addio Name of the song my dear, goodbye Beautiful dear, my beautiful dear My child, oh heaven I respect her (in a really affectionate way) I respect her (in a really affectionate way) Oh my dear, goodbye My dear child Why don't you step away? Yes, away from science, Dear, my dear child? Oh my beauty Oh my dear Oh my dear Oh my child Oh dear, my dear Oh my dear Oh my dear Oh my child Oh dear, my dear If I gonna be honest you could also swap "child" whit "baby" and it might make even more sense, in general the song really sounds like a mother speaking to her child (girl), really a super sweet song considering it was written by Glados
This song has stuck with me my entire life since I was a kid.. And it will stick with me for the rest of it. Hopefully valve comes back to what it was once was..
I don't think I want a Portal 3. As they say, it's not over until the Fat Lady sings... and this was the perfect sendoff, not just for Portal, but to Valve games in general too. After this there was what, Dota stuff, CS:GO stuff, that card game no one liked, tech demos... and then Half Life: Alyx, which was as much a Tech Demo for the now far more mature VR technology that they pioneered. even if Valve were to suddenly settle for making games that are more of the same and not utterly groundbreaking masterpieces (fat chance), I don't know if they could do much more with portals. so, Addio, sweet, beautiful child. Addio, and fair travels. To the end of an era.

After many years I still would like there to be a portal 3 that continues the story in a way even if Chell comes back as main character or not.
The thing is, they see you from a corner or something, even if you're not in the laser, so theoretically they don't need the laser
The turrets were advertised as a way to guard babies iirc. They're in baby mode with Chell now because GladOS probably chose those settings herself 🥺
Bruh to this day, this song still hits so strangely hard on me, it all feels just as it was inteded, as saying your final goodbyes to an old friend, knowing that you are never going to see each other, but only for the good of both of you
Im not crying, you are (or well, maybe i am crying just a bit)
You still cryin?
Being able to understand the lyrics because you are italian in the first place is one of the few times speaking italian is useful xD
Vaffanculo :3(its italian go search it up)
+#Keyon03 “canale in disuso” Ma perché? xD
icsdi
Understanding what the music says because you know a tiny bit of portuguese and spanish, since italian is a combination between these languages :p
@@k0n4_m4r Isn't it the other way? Since Italy is the most direct descendant of Rome and the other ones (Spanish and Portuguese) being Romance languages?

I hope you're also sorry for not knowing the reason why it's in italian and not in spanish.
God when the lyrics started and when the bass kicked in: nothing but chills. I love this song too much.
When you encounter the first 4 tourrettes aiming at you, I was like: „No! You didn‘t...“
And after this song I was like: „No... ;( you didn’t ;_;...“
Rod Kei turrets
portal 3 - No
portal 2 source 2 - possible
chells in half life 3 - possible as well
they can call it half live 2 if they want as long as they make the next half live^^
hl 3 and p3 will be an only game where Chell and Gordon freeman meet.
Or at least i hope so X3
there's a portal 2 Part 2 but it's made out of legos
Lego Dimensions?
[SCOT]GamingwithJack Portal 3 because ending of portal 2 coop: i think yes
The only part in a video game where I got sad and almost cried. I loved portal, the story was there but something about this song is... different I can't explain it. This is really sad and if your one of those people who skips the end credits and stuff go back. Replay the entire game if you have too it's worth every second.
P.S. GLaDos is Chel's mother
+Taylor Bowling:Gaming yeah we know
Its not clear if she is her mother But Glados definetly loved Chell like her own daughter
yep, even though they she tried to kill her.
+Tyler Blue twice
+Tyler Blue but chell had some connection because she went through the struggle of carrying her around as a potato for a while
"Well here we go again..." Aperture Desk Job
Thanks for another masterpiece, VALVe.
This actally goodbye to us too.after that Valve didin’t make any single story games. i hope they will make games like this again.
0:09 this moment when we all though that torrets were going to shoot Chell
At 1:20 it is epic
My favourite part aswell :)
McFunhater
The lyrics are very powerful at that part as well.
McFunhater w
Ok, this is epic.
Science can be cruel, because everything powerful can be cruel to something as fragile as a human
I forgot how much I love this game. I really hope they make a third one.
Since Portal 2 basiccly wrapped up the story its likely theres not gonna be a Portal 3.
@@thefernpersonwoahg they can always make a prequel
@@ImranKhan-je2qz Portal Stories Mel is a fanmade prequel indistinguishable from Valve in terms of quality. Highly recommend!
This remind me of the first time I finished portal 2.
During this song,I was happy, and sad at the same time.
It was ameazing.
I felt like i accomplished something special....
Idk what to say.
creeper... Aw man
This song will NEVER fail to make me bawl my eyes out. Music has always been able to make me emotional, but this in particular, it brings back so many memories of the first time I finished portal 2 at 12 years old and realised this was something special
im italian and i understood every bit of this,it's crazy how it fits so well with the story of the game
lets face it we knew this is where the game would end
Very cool
The cake is a pie!

-Im in space

Dad are you space?
Yes, son. Now we are together again.
Best comment section on TH-cam this just goes to show how fucking amazing this game was
God, I still remember finishing my first playthrough of this amazing game, being surprised that Glados said she was done trying to kill me, rising up in that elevator just to be greeted by 4 turrets.
I remember crying when i first saw this scene 8 years ago. Absolute masterpiece. To this day its still my favorite game 💯👑
well based on the lyrics i take it glados actually did care about chell
because she is the mother of chell..?
She's chell's mother. This is hinted at in the bring your daughter to work day scene.
This never gets old for me. This game will always hold a special place in my heart
it's almost been 10 years and it still slaps
So, that's what happened after i've been banished into space
one of the best endings in a videogame , that was an awesome idea.
One day, when I have all the resources, I hope to re-film this entire sequence in live action.
***** I can dream darn it!
J.J. Abrams has confirmed he is working on a half life and portal movie
Cortod That's cool! I was initially thinking of just doing this scene as a college project with a real turret robot.
dude.. pursue ur dream.. dont let anyone brings u down.i really like to see ur creation.
It needs to be made by a fan, otherwise it will no look like portal AT ALL!!! They always do that...
I cried at this scene... 5 years ago.
I still fuckin' cry man, what are you talking about?
I think my soul left me...
This is a extremely sad and heartbreaking ending when you piece together some of the lore...
yeah
Whoever chose this song for the final goodbye is a goddamn genius.
Cara bella, cara mia bella
Mia bambina, o ciel
Ché la stimo
Ché la stimo
O cara mia, addio
La mia bambina cara,
Perché non passi lontana?
Sì, lontana da scïenza
Cara, cara mia bambina?
Ah, mia bella
Ah, mia cara
Ah, mia cara
Ah, mia bambina
O cara, cara mia
Mia cara
Ah, mia cara
Ah, mia bambina
O cara, cara mia

I LOVE how animal king turret makes the bass because of his size.
Yeah I felt the same, idk if you do but i get sad at the most of the story-games
0:53 that turret singing deactivated and didn’t get to vibe
Fun/Weird Fact: The line at 1:06, while written in Italian is phonetically identical to the Spanish phrase "Que lastima", meaning "What a shame". This is most definitely unintentional but I still thought it was cool enough to comment on
" I always thought you were my greatest enemy but you were actually my best friend."
every time i listen to this song, it reminds me of the ending and i tear up so bad
2018 and still beautiful 😭
ikr
2019 and still here listening to one of the best and saddest song a game could ever offer to us.
As an Italian who speaks English as his second language I want to provide all of you whit an accurate traduction of the song Cara Mia Addio
Name of the song my dear, goodbye
Beautiful dear, my beautiful dear
My child, oh heaven
I respect her (in a really affectionate way)
I respect her (in a really affectionate way)
Oh my dear, goodbye
My dear child
Why don't you step away?
Yes, away from science,
Dear, my dear child?
Oh my beauty
Oh my dear
Oh my dear
Oh my child
Oh dear, my dear
Oh my dear
Oh my dear
Oh my child
Oh dear, my dear
If I gonna be honest you could also swap "child" whit "baby" and it might make even more sense, in general the song really sounds like a mother speaking to her child (girl), really a super sweet song considering it was written by Glados
Where Kids cried: Fortnite Black Hole event
Where Men cried: Titanic ending
Where Legends cried: Kingdom Hearts 2 ending
Where Gods cried:
Oh nice I'm a God cool 👌
I'm pretty sure we joke about women talking about men didn't cry during titanic maybe changing it to betrayed of General Shepard or Something idk
This song has stuck with me my entire life since I was a kid.. And it will stick with me for the rest of it. Hopefully valve comes back to what it was once was..
Years later, still amazing.
For some reasong I cry when I'm at 1:37 .. Am i alone.. I'm so easily touched for a guy.. ;__;
" I'm so easily touched for a guy.. ;__; " Sameee
***** Don't know... It just happens
Otaku Syndrome same
+Otaku Syndrome You're not the only one who cried.
its okay im the same
i miss the olde days when i was playing this as a kid and obsessing over the lore and mopping over the end :(
Man, when the great turret plays her part it's freaking awesome.
This song is actually going to be in my heart all day in my head
This hurts even more after the ending of desk job, the turrets learned how to sing from Cave Johnson, this really is aperture's goodbye
I hate to know that playing portal 2 again is never going to be like my first time experience on this game..
Dont :D
@@wickeddubdi33yeah don't listen to this guy
Ah, how a tsundere confesses, with poem or song
Portal isnt over until the fat turret sings
*Listens to song, Feels sad
*Sees translation, cries
This game remains one of the few that made me cry... The fact I'll never be able to play it for the first time again is immensely depressing :(
If this is not playing at my funeral,
I’m not attending
this is on game i thought of in my teen years that resonated with me. the feeling of being trapped even though they loved u yet watching the same force that restrict u let u go saying basically “ i hope you live well as u have survived here “ in the most loving and moving way they can without stopping u . i know may have come from abusive families, i may not come from one but i know that it is not simple regaurdless of where i come from , i love u and hope u find a starting point where i did years later
This, this is the absolute best versions of all, I love all the scenes and that the song do not end where it do in the original but continue and I feel so much. I really love this, it makes me cry of how beutiful it is! :D
After many years I still would like there to be a portal 3 that continues the story in a way even if Chell comes back as main character or not.
I also remember that time when I was that stupid teen coming up with all those fanfic ideas on how the story could continue.
They were stupid, but I absolutely really liked the game.
Portal storys mel
Don't cry because it's over.
Smile because it happened :)
@Arketeron Play
I instantly started to cry listening to this in front of my 4 year old. He just looked at me like " whatever, mom". It doesn't help we are watching Luca, which means I'm going to cry AGAIN in an hour. Thanks, portal. I love this song, lol.
😊
This ending hits a lot harder if you subscribe to the "Chell is the secret daughter of Cave Johnson and Caroline" theory.
Guys please, tell me I'm not the only one listening to this masterpiece in 2020
If only Valve would make a Portal VR. I finished HL: Alyx a few days ago. I feel empty. I can not wait another 13 years...
This is why everyone’s convinced Caroline was Chell’s mom.
This is why I'm convinced she didn't delete Caroline. Building an opera. "Easiest solution" my ass.
I think it's Caroline's part of GLaDOS' brain talking to her daughter Chell.
10 years since i first heard this and it sparks my heart with joy yet sorrow for easier times
WHY CAN’T I STOP LISTENING TO THIS!!!!!! (and want you gone + still alive)
