  • This GREEN DARNER DRAGONFLY (ANAX JUNIUS) decided to take an extended rest on our fence giving me ample time to retrieve my cameras. It just sat there in the warm sun cleaning its huge beak for a good 10 minutes...and we don't even have a pond or any water nearby!
The Green Darner is one of 38 species of dragonflies common in the United States and Southern Canada. It has a 4-to 6-inch wingspan and can fly some 18 miles per hour.
Green Darners eat lots of mosquitoes!

COMMENT: This video shows the LIMITATIONS of the little Flip Video Ultra Camcorder: if you want to take close-ups such as these, you may want to invest in a more expensive camcorder with better zoom quality. I added some photos to show the stunning colors of this critter!
    DATE RECORDED: April 17, 2008

Its wings were just PERFECT and irridescent! It might have just hatched and needed to dry out and that's why it was sitting there in the sun for so long before it started on its life's journey. I'd never seen one that up close! (Too bad I couldn't zoom in on that awesome beak!)
God's miracles are truly all around us -- we just need to take the time to be STILL and LISTEN and LOOK and SEE! :>)
