So beautiful see them in the wild where they can do what they want. They can have loud conversations with each other, fly from tree to tree, hang out with each other. Thank you! I enjoyed this so much.

We rescued our cockatoo when the bird's owner was dying of cancer, in the end she was more concerned about the birds welfare than her own. That was more than 10 years ago.
He is quite a character and loves being carried outside in the wind and sun. I wish I had the resources to visit those places in Indonesia where they fly free. But in the meantime the bird and I watch and listen to the wild birds on the video which we both appreciate.

What amazes me the most is that more than one person has watched them, listened to those screeching sounds and said "I want THAT in my home". xP
They are beautiful creatures but I would never have one in my house.

you have to meet them in person to understand why, their character is what sells them.

They can put out as many decibels as a 747 jet engine. Proper care and training can reduce the “screaming”. I obtained mine when someone asked me to watch him for two weeks. In the meantime, they moved with no contact information! Dexter has integrated himself into my home AND community (all my neighbours love listening to him when he can go outside!)

There are parrots living in San Francisco, California, who either escaped or were released by their owners. They hang out together. A poor man made friends with them. A book has been written about these parrots who are wild again. I have never seen them in person. I am not sure what part of the city they live in.

This is awesome and makes me cry - I have a moluccan and I worry all the time what will happen when I'm gone. These birds should never be in a cage. Bad enough if they are hatched in captivity but cannot imagine someone capturing the wild cockatoo and putting it in a cage for the rest of its life. Sad. Thanks for the video and all that you do.

ginnylrunyan please make plans for your birds future. If you don't know of anyone who can provide a home, contact an avian rescue in your area. They can help you meet someone who can step and take your bird in the event of your death.

I have two umbrellas I spend every minute with. I can't imagine my life without them. I wish people realized that having one of these birds is no less responsibility then adopting a child . that was a good video . but it definitely made me sad for what these birds go threw.

    • @Cent4man
      @Cent4man 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Robert an Sherry Bailey I hope you've made arrangements for their continued care in case of your death. These birds often end up in rescues because they outlive their owners. They can live up to 80+ years. Please make sure they have a home to go to. I have a 22 year old right now that I adopted from rescue because her person passed away. The person that inherited the bird was unable to properly care for her and she ended up neglected while the woman was hospitalized. So I try to make sure other bird parents make sure they have a plan in place for they birds to go to healthy long term homes. If you've already planned for this, I thank you and hope you'll add press the message.

I had no idea there is a population established in Hawaii. Several years ago, one of my friends was able to trace her 40 year old wild caught Moluccan to its original tribe by his dialect. She was going to try to re integrate him but the area broke out in civil unrest and his tribe was wiped out or disappeared.

I adopted an 11 year Old (now 16) Moluccan Cockatoo hence my finding this site to learn more of them in the wild. I love her dearly & as some1 else said of their birds, cannot imagine life without her, so thank you for posting this. She is not a "pet" she's a beloved member of our family (I havent ever had a "pet") I wish to do what I can to help in the wild populations & improve the life of my dear one. I have many ideas how to do this so Im grateful for any info that lead me in the right direction. As it stands now my parrot travels with me & enjoys being out & around nature as well as having a safe home with me. She is domestic bread & I believe not even learned to fly. I am trying to rectify this as well as well as having her around other birds. She is doing very well, thankfully she wasnt in the rescue very long when I found her. We bonded in a few weeks & it like we been together her whole life & I want the best life I can give her. She loves to travel & meet new people & see new places, she loves to bike ride & listen to music & big parks where she can be around other animals, seeing & hearing them around her. When we travel it afford me the opportunity to share & show people about animal adoptions & misconceived notions about these wondrous little souls She isnt a great flyer but we are working on this. I woulds love to adopt another as a sibling & to extend my heart to another captive breed bird & Im sure she would love another of her kind around too. There are 2 parrots in particular I wish to find but for now Ill do what I can til opportunity is afforded me. So to all who came here too learn more of these gorgeous beings in their natural state & care for those breed in captivity & wish to give them a wonderful albeit "captive" life or aid those who protect/aid them in the wild I say Thank you & God's speed This is my greatest wish for all animals & has been my entire life, thankfully its something even age cannot prevent in me :) Take care :)

I raised my hand-fed baby Moluccan Serum Salmon Crested Cockatoo. Her mother was dumped on my doorstep by a woman who was gifted the bird, knew nothing about the breed, and didn't want her . Took me six moths to calm her down from being terrorized within her cage. Then after 7 years the mother began mating behavior and I needed to find her a mate. From San Fransisco to San Diego I drove with my mother bird sitting on the passenger car seat back. I was compelled to trade my mother bird and give her up in order to get one of her eggs. Two months later I flew down and picked up my baby pin-feather Salmon Crested. Raised her for 5 months on warm formula until weaning to seeds and veggies. She went with me everywhere. Hiking, walking, gardening, and to occasional parties. These birds can live 100 years if you take care of them and will them, at your death, to responsible humans. They NEED you like a four year old human needs its parents. Do not disappoint these parrots.

    • @aquariusmoon771

Disgusting! You should NEVER have bred her (clearly you knew better) as there are far, far to many of these Cockatoos in rescurs and sanctuaries - far more birds than homes - and to TRADE the mother to get a baby? You shouldn't be allowed to have pets. Just disgusting and heartbreaking. You essentially sold her to used in a brothel like a brood mare. They're often killed by a more aggressive mate. You completely betrayed your "pet"... just disgusting. And use the past tense ," she went with me" about the baby so it would seem you passed that bird on as well. Horrible. Though I imagine the bird is better off being anywhere other than in your irresponsible hands.

Here in Maluku, we count them as one of our Birds of Paradise, they are part of our childrens songs and myths they are ancient as old as the rainforest, and they inherit great knowledge from the past. I pray every single one of them finds a respected and loving home.. Our land is being tormented by occupying Indonesian forces that want to get rid of the people and take the land for soy plantations.. We MUST learn the rich history of these birds to save their homeland as well as the indigenous people that aim to protect them.

I love moluccans. I don't think it's cruel to keep them as pets if you can afford to provide them with the time and attention outside of the cage everyday and a large aviary full of toys for them to chew on. Without this, no one should ever get a moluccan, or any cockatoo for that matter

growing up with a mollucan (which is still with me) i cannot emphasize enough that these birds should be left in the wild. putting a creature of this calliber in a cage is unusually cruel. OWNING ONE OF THESE PARROTS WILL BRING SUFFURING TO BOTH YOU AND THE BIRD. dont get me wrong; mollucans are the sweetest birds you will ever meet. but they dont do well in a cage.

I am concerned about the escaped birds. I believe they will be a possible problem when any species is introduced purposefully or accidentally in a country where they would not exist in nature. These are wonderful creatures but can be destructive in foreign lands. The people who set them free in sanfrancisco can cause major issues. So ignorant. I do love the idea of these creatures being free but ....

Mine is a rescue. She was never wild. She was born in captivity. He original person died and the people she was left to were unable to care for her properly. As a result, she started pulling out her feathers. Now she can't fly. She has never learned to hunt or forage for herself. She wouldn't know how to protect herself from predators. Should I fly her to Indonesia and just toss her to the wild? She wouldn't live through the week. She is bonded to me. I'm all she knows now. She would not understand why momma abandoned her. These birds have the intelligence of a 4 to 5 year old child. They understand where home is. They know who family members are. They know who their person is and they grieve when they lose that person. They can live up to 80 years old so they quite often out live their first owners. This means many times they will end up in rescues. If they are lucky, someone like me will get them and they get a second living family. It takes a long time for them to adjust but, they are very loving and they want to be loved. Cockatoos are the most affectionate of all wild birds. They need a lot of attention. They are litteraly velcro birds. So imagine how traumatic it would be to take a hand raised bird like that, after 22 years in a home, and just abandon her in the wild. No, the wild ones do need to stay wild. They do need to quit captive breeding for pets and the pets should remain pets.
