I work in the film industry. Makeup onset is not your typical at-home makeup. It's a whole makeup department. It can be like at-home makeup, but when they're doing these major transformations to make actors look like real-life people, it's a whole other ball game. Sometimes we go as far as to call it 'FX Makeup', as in 'special effects.' There are prosthetics and glue involved. You're doing it every day that you're on set and filming can go for weeks or months depending on the production. I don't think anyone that is doing makeup at home has worry about this.

I think it’s more the prosthetics that aggravated her skin. As a makeup artist I can say that prosthetics to the level used in movies, and for the hours used, will definitely aggravate skin especially if you have sensitive skin. Sweating underneath prosthetics will clog pores, or cause rashes. It’s definitely not ideal.

I agree. And if she thinks she has sagging, it may be from wearing prosthetics that pulled down on her face so she experienced some aging from the pulling down of her face. Just as gravity ages us etc

I do sfx and also the quality of products is really important, cleaning and storing the prosthetics after use, alongside preparing the skin for the prosthetics and after care once they are removed. I have seen quite a few horror stories only in the last year from incorrect applications and literal glue used to keem them in place 😬 I would personally question why her look took 7 hours to put on, especially since she doesn't require that much of detailed prosthetics or paint.. Something smells fishy 👀

It has to be exhausting. As someone who can’t sit still long, just being in a makeup chair that long would be torture.

I enjoy applying & wearing makeup, but it is also fantastic that Dr Dray has normalised seeing woman "on the screen" who prefer a more natural look on themselves. Makeup ruined my skin as well. That Maybelline Fit Me foundation gave me cystic acne. At first I didn't know what was causing it but once I took a break from the makeup, my skin improved significantly. I later found the foundation had hormone disrupters which explained the cystic acne, and many other people online had been affected. Had to go on accutane for over a year to treat it because suspending the use just wasn't enough. Also, those MAC blushes were horrible to my skin and the Tarte bronzers as well. Because it works for some people doesn't mean it's gonna work on you. My skin is doing okay now, but I definitely am extra careful when it comes to selecting any skin care or makeup products. In fact, I wear very little makeup now, if any.

Omg! I used to wear that and I got adult hormonal acne not long after (maybe during) that. I didn't realize that was a thing but it doesn't surprise me. Maybe I should look into the 'clean makeup' trend after all. Idk much about makeup ingredients but this makes me very nervous. During quarantine my skin improved a lot as well. And now that I'm wearing it again I can see my skin not having that glow anymore.

@@VK-uh5jz I don't know about the "clean makeup" route, I've seen a lof of those products contain pore clogging ingredients like coconut oil, and irritating ingredients like essencial oils. @@laur83 I was gifted the foundation. I AM acne prone so when I first started noticing some new tiny breakouts (whiteheads, blackheads), I blamed them on stress or the fact that I was vacationing at the beach (hot weather). BUT when I went back home and over a month had gone by, I started breaking out differently, the lesions were MASSIVE and CYSTIC. It started with ONE, and I though, "that's weird, that never happens, it'll go away". And I used MORE make up to mask the problem. BIG mistake as it only made things get worse. For a whole school semester I used the foundation, till I went on vacation and because I worked from home I suspended it. My skin dramatically improved. But I thought it was because I had taken a break from college. So I used the foundation again when I went back to class and BINGO, my skin started getting worse again. Unfortunately by the time I realized the makeup was the culprit, my hormones were all over the place and I needed accutane.

everyones skin is different so don't spread misleading things. being without makeup for long term spoiled my skin in lockdown. it's darker nd dryer now. It depends on type of skin, skin concerns etc. As per my observation no makeup helps oily acne prone skin people usually bcz their pores won't be clogged, but it worsens the extreme dry skin with no acne issues like mine, bcz we can never have enough moisture, we need extra layer, extra protection, we usually sweat less too, so make up no make up doesn't matter for people like us [usually]

I realized over the years that I had very good skin during extended use of makeup. Part of the reason is because I am very meticulous with my tools and also clean off my makeup very well. And because it might be drying for the skin after I wash off everything, I made sure I moisturize well. And now that we are mostly working from home, I tend to get more lazy and my skin gets really dry even though I wash less. I think it is a matter of being hardworking with your skincare routine.

Niacinamide transformed my skin, especially acne and texture, and I don’t wear makeup except a handful of times a year. So I think it was your skincare. Unless you wore heavy makeup. I do think that can cause issues.

I read, once in the 1970s and again in the 1980s, that Brigitte Bardot was the one who ruined her skin with makeup. She had cystic acne from a very young age, she covered it with heavy makeup in real life, BUT for movies, it was covered even more thickly, causing even MORE acne, requiring MORE makeup-and eventually scarring. Once she was wealthy enough to live in a mansion with a private beach in St Tropez, she tanned for at least an hour a day, for as many days as weather would permit, in an attempt to finally rid herself of acne. What happened instead were wrinkles, which were made to appear worse due to all the acne scarring. Apparently, by the 1990s, she had become a complete recluse.

I work in ophthalmology and understand how this can affect the eyes. Especially the misuse of false eyelashes. It was a known thing that I was constantly caking it on and in between classes I would powder to cover the oils. I just turned 40 and everyone tells me I barely aged and still look like I'm in my 20's. I joke and tell them it must have been all that makeup I caked on all those years! lol

I double cleanse makeup off right when I get home and done for the day, but ppl don’t wanna hear it that it isn’t the makeup. My mother had beautiful skin and yet she felt the need to cake that stuff on her face. I never asked her, but I wondered why.
I even gave up blush over 20 yrs ago. And concealer is a micro-dot only for special occasions. Lately, I use some tinted sunscreen only to avoid the white cast, but I had a hard time finding one with minimal tint.

I think women will justify their want to wear makeup by forcing themselves to believe that it isn't really bad for skin. This false narrative makes it easier to just cover up the bad skin that foundation and concealer created in the first place. If anyone does not believe this, just do the experiment. Meaning, just stop wearing foundation and concealer at all for a good six months and concentrate on a great cleansing routine. Hydrate with good creams. Exfoliate with good serums. Drink lots of water. Six months down the line, you will really find out just how much the makeup ruined your skin that is now on the mend as a result of not wearing it anymore. Your skin will now be glowing and spotless. You now would not dream of covering up your beautiful, radiant and glowing complexion, because you no longer need to. You have nothing to conceal. Now you only have something great to reveal.

Like others have said, cinematic makeup isn’t a good gauge for the everyday makeup wearer. As someone with sensitive skin, I’ve managed to figure out a way to wear a full face nearly every day (though I wear a tinted moisturizer for everyday wear) while still maintaining a good complexion.
I know some people might have less tolerant skin than me, but I’ve found products that work for me and don’t break me out. There are some products that definitely do break me out but that can be determined through trial and error.

@@divyaboggavarapu8624 Hi! Again, my skin might be different from yours but I will try my best to answer your question.
Currently I use Colourpop’s Pretty Fresh Tinted Moisturizer for everyday use. I’ve also used Elf’s Poreless Putty Primer and Milk Makeup’s Hydrogrip Primer with no problem. I also love Flower Beauty’s Light Illusion foundation. Generally, I go for medium coverage at most because full-coverage foundations just make me break out (literally all three full coverage foundations I’ve used have broken me out/irritated me). If I want to make sure I cover redness/dark circles:blemishes, I use Nyx Cosmetics’s color-correcting palette and spot conceal with Too Faced’s Born This Way concealer.
Concealers are a decent safe bet for me and I’ve used: Kosas’s concealer, Ulta Beauty’s concealer, and Nyx’s HD concealer.
Powders are another safe bet for me but finding a powder I like is a different story. If you like one that doesn’t look like powder, I recommend Glossier’s Wowder. I’m currently waiting on Elf Cosmetics’s Loose Glow Powder to see if it can also be a good everyday powder.
As for cheek products, I haven’t found any that really break me out though I do try and sanitize especially cream products once in a while. I think it’s mainly the base makeup that matters. I can’t think of too many brands, but Tower28 is a cosmetic brand that intentionally formulates their products for sensitive skin.
I also don’t use foundation brushes and use a sponge/my fingers to blend out most of my liquid/cream products. The bristles of the brush can be irritating otherwise. I do use face brushes but I try to not just stomp it all over my face to avoid irritation. I also clean my brushes pretty much weekly.
I also double cleanse every night and alternate between Differin/Cosrx’s AHA BHA most nights. I use a ton of soothing/hydrating products in my routine otherwise because I realized irritation from anything (including minor sun damage) can make me break out.

... really It was the prosthetics she was talking about.I read this days ago and it was prosthetics that took hours to put on. I have been wearing makeup since i was 14. I just turned 30 and always had oily acne prone skin. With wearing makeup and my skin type developing a skin routine was CRUCIAL since being a young teen and that I did. Now turning 30 people say I look 22-24 and no one can believe it! Since my skin is oiler it does crave the powders i use because it helps with shine. Point being makeup did not ruin my face it helped with confidence and help create lifetime routine. 😊 YES sleeping in it is horrible! That does mess me up! Keep everything clean as well!

I'm really glad that you made the comment on how the article has a higher chance being "click bait" than "telling the truth". Its a common practice nowadays on the media and its kinda sad how it became this way.

The "sorry not sorry" experience seems to have had more of a psychological affect on JCh. Perhaps a feeling of claustophobia, expecially wearing the prosthetics? It reminds me of the feeling that I had at school when we made face masks using plaster of Paris (Vaseline on our skin first). JCh. seems to think that it may have "undone" all her good work eating well and caring for her skin. Perhaps it is something to bring up to her agent and Equity? She would not have got paid as well as a male actor who had to undergo this transformation. Understandably, she probably also wants everyone to know that it "took quite a bit" to look like TFB. I am glad that I have worn make-up since I was about 12, then concealer etc. when I got pimples...and foundation and powder everyday since then. Now, without make-up I have been told that I look the same age as my adult son (who also looks young). Genetics and lifestyle plays a part too.
Unless there is an Oscar for JCh., I doubt whether there will be a sequel to the TFB movie!

This reminds me of the “oh the awful corsets!” interviews a lot of actresses do for publicity for their film. They tend to perpetuate a lot of corset myths, or extrapolate their very particular (and unusual) experience to corsets generally.
And it’s clickbait. It’s just publicity for the movie. People are curious about corsets, so they click. A story about how makeup destroyed her skin is interesting, so people click.

I am an actress so I know what she means. Last job make up time use to take 3 hours… I have sensitive skin I made sure to have all the products I might have needed to calm down … just in case. It’s also true that sometime what causes irritation is the friction of the brush and the pigments… especially on eyelids and the prices of removing makeup.

I used to wear theatrical makeup for drama class productions in school. Even with a primer underneath, that stuff was VERY difficult to remove! I loved acting, but my skin would be so reddened by the makeup removal-and when the redness calmed down, my skin would peel! The itching and burning were so miserable that I decided not to continue drama classes in high school!

@@vetsai8199 yes I know what you mean. The make of Theatre it’s thick and strong, the cinema one too because the lights are strong and warm and it has to last.
I found a solution. I put a lot of CeraVe Ealing ointment before bed time and the day after too. It creates a thick barrier between skin and make. The make up artist of the amazon serie I did used to tell me that the base I used to make was amazing. And the make up keep really well from smirring. Try it

I know nothing about stage makeup. It may be some kind of paint that’s coated on. I’ve seen people who look like they’re wearing stage makeup but I think they’ve just put on too much regular makeup. I don’t think there’s any comparison to those of us who wear makeup everyday.

Makeup acts as a tanning barrier at times, it does not mean it fully & properly protects your skin the way sunscreen would. Without proper protection, your skin will be left wide open to damage from the sun, possibly causing sunburn, as well as permanent damage to the skin, or even increasing the overall risk of skin cancer. 😪

Throughout college I knew nothing about skincare and I didn’t want to spend much money on it since I had no idea where to even begin and I of course was on a budget. BUT I am so grateful that at least I used the Olay SPF 30 as my moisturizer plus I caked on foundation with SPF 15, even though it made me breakout (I didn’t really care at the time cause I just covered my breakouts with more makeup). I hope that between those 2 products I had decent sun protection most days, living in Seattle at the time probably helped too. I found you in my early 20s and thanks to your advice I never go a day without sunscreen and I think my skin looks even better than it did in my teens/ early 20s :)

Here’s my interesting story time first, I want to say that make up made my anxiety facial blushing go away so every time I wear it I rarely blush. I don’t know what it is in the make up that helps the heat in my face stay calm, but if you have any type of anxiety and you blush a lot, then consider wearing make up this replaced medication for me so I kind of have no choice to wear make up every time I wake up in the morning. To reduce my anxiety. Also anxiety could be embarrassing I wish it was talked about enough

Happy Monday dr Dray and everyone 😀This was so interesting. I am 58 and have had oily acne prone skin all my life . I do feel that back in the 70s and 80s it was a vicious cycle using concealer and base to cover blemishes but only breaking out from it . Thinking back it probably was the fact we didn't do any double cleanse back then . Then using harsh things like Seabreeze and Bonne Bell 10.0.6 really stripped it . Have a fabulous day love to mom and Tybee 🥰❤💕

Hi, Mary Ann! I used to LOVE 10.0.6 Lotion, actually! It wasn’t as strong as Seabreeze, and I used it between washes (I washed my face 3x/day in high school) just to keep the adolescent oil under control! I have to say that my skin was oily up to the age of about 58-59, and that started to change when I turned 60. Now I’m 66, and it’s actually kind of dry (in the winter it is plain old DRY!).
      Enjoy your afternoon and evening!👍🏼☀️🌊🐬💚

I naturally sweat easily and I always hated putting on anything too thick on my face that made me feel like I was wearing a second layer of skin which made it feel like my sweat was pooling right underneath that layer of whatever. It was part of the reason I never liked using sunscreen, not to mention makeup (didn't help that I have eczema). Now I have taught myself to tolerate the sensation when it comes to sunscreen at least but hell now am I gonna use makeup. Having worked in the schoo theatre too I know how hot the lights can get so I can only imagine how boiling Christian was under all that layer of makeup and lights and pressure jesus

I have severe traction alopecia on my eyebrows from heavy brow makeup in my youth, but other than that, I have definitely noticed that it protects from the sun. My friends of all races have sun damage to their skin and they wonder how I, Black and Puerto Rican tend to stay so light and my skin undamaged. My skin care is on point and I wear makeup daily.

I think you just have to find the right makeup. I can't use any drugstore makeup. I would get like 20 pimples the next day. I had to use higher end makeup. They wouldn't break me out. But Makeup Forever made my skin look dull. Now I exclusively only use Korean Air cushions. My fav are IOPE and Laneige. The best one for my skin is AmorePacific. But that one is sooo expensive so I haven'tbought it in over 5 yrs. But it looks so beautiful on the skin.. I would never go back to any other makeup. I am sticking to Korean Air cushions for life.
