Face Mapping For Acne

  • Face mapping for acne can be extremely helpful when you are trying to determine what is the cause of your acne. Every bump or papule on the face is NOT acne and therefore wont respond to acne treatment. For example tiny bumps on the forehead can actually be Pityriasis Folliculitis aka Fungal Acne and best responds to antifungal medicine like Nizoral. A common cause of acne that involves the hairline is pomade acne. Pomade acne results from hair products. Enlarged oil glands on the forehead can result in another acne mimicker called sebaceous hyperplasia.
Small bumps under the eyes can be milia or syringomas.
Breaking out on the nose with papules and pustules may actually be rosacea which responds well to azelaic acid. I recommend The Ordinary or the Inkey azelaic acid as they have a good strength of medication and are inexpensive.
Small bumps located around the mouth are frequently perioral dermatitis. The most common culprit is Fluorinated toothpaste and comedogenic make-up. Chin strap acne can result from athlete gear and greatly improves with proper hygiene and Benzoyl Peroxide. And Lastly Acne like papules, pustles and cyst on the neck in the beard area and neck may be Pseudofolliculitis Barbae (PFB). The best treatment for PFB is laser hair removal. Sulfacleanse will help to keep flairs at bay. Acne skin mapping can help you better understand why you are breaking out in certain areas and the best treatment options. A trip to the dermatologist will best help to fine tune any acne regimen that is not responding to the above treatments.

This has helped me so much. I've had bad breakouts on my cheeks and this video (plus your video on diet and acne) helped me realize that dairy was the culprit! I started eating it more since quarantine started and my cheeks have been breaking out ever since. I've now switched to oat milk and only eating cheese on occasion (less than once a week). My face has calmed down significantly... Thank you so much for you videos!

I have been searching the internet for months, trying to figure out what is wrong with the skin on my forehead.
    Now I Know... Sebaceous Hyperplasia.
Thankfully mine are really small. And now I know what they are. I'm going to do my best to keep them that way. But I have gone from having 3 to about 7 in the last 12 months. On me they are about 2 mm to 4 mm wide. slightly raised, bubbly yellow circles, with a dent / hole in the middle. I hate them! I just want my forehead to be smooth. Note: I'm over 40, have super oily skin. And although I no longer spend any time in the sun. From childhood to late teens I was in the sun every day in summer.
Another problem I have is on my right cheek. My skin looks like cracked earth. You couldn't tell me what that is could you?
    Thank You Again!

Hi Alexis! Thank you so much for this video, it's very helpful for me.
I'm not sure about ditching the fluorinated toothpaste though because it strengthens my dental enamel and thus helps preventing cavities... :(
And I have a question about acne from taking vitamin b12 (pills, injections,...). I'm vegan so I have to substitute my B12 to stay healthy but I have observed that it makes my skin break out and I've also heard it from others. Do you know anything about the science behind that?
I'm so glad I found your channel!

    • @LailiPhoenicia

If this doesn't get answered by Dr Stephens or you don't have access to a doctor right now, there's this small article from Mixed Makeup about it. Google "b12 acne mixed makeup". It seems that it's understudied but just some people either are more sensitive to all kinds of shots (b12 or flu shots or meds) and just gets more pimples, or there's one kind of acne bacteria that can get grow more rapidly with overdosing on b12. Since our bodies hold onto b12 for few years so it might seem that they're not going away no matter what too. Well I'm not a licensed dermatologist this is just what I've found while looking into it some time ago.
Also, yeah, as my every dental hygiene studies lecturer and professor would say no cutting out on fluorinated toothpaste unless you don't have teeth or direct diseases. And any sort of pimples or dermatitis around the mouth only tells us that the person is putting probably 2x or 4x the needed amount of toothpaste. The right amount (pea size anything more than that is excessive) of toothpaste won't truly get out of mouth, also if one avoids SLS in toothpaste it's more likely not to touch anything beyond parts of lips, etc. To cut out fluorinated toothpaste might end up way more regrettable and worrisome than few dots around the mouth.
