My psychology professor told me, "You should treat everything that you put in or around your body as medicine," and this was immediately what I thought of. I don't use makeup, practically ever, but when I go out I try to go out and buy small quantities of new stuff, because of this exact thing. When I got my first kit, it was a hand-me-down, and I hated the thought of it, I cleaned it all immediately. My mom and sister thought I was crazy.
Lemme tell you, I sell makeup and I’m in cosmetology school, and throwing out expired makeup and not buying excess is the best way to keep your makeup looking fantastic and prevent a ton of skin issues. I recently started purging old makeup and using newer, cleaner stuff and my makeup looks and wears better, and it’s minimized my acne
For some of my cousins, knowing that they wouldn't replace their old make up products and get acne and sick. I tagged their old stuff, bought new, exact same things. And then their skin cleared. I remember get screamed at by both that i should've just kept the old stuff and just bought new stuff. Told them i did that so they'd shut up about acne and to stop helping take care of them when they get sick
See this is a pro for having eczemic and acne prone skin. After having a really bad reaction to adult makeup as a child I decided I just don't want to make myself suffer. The closest thing to a makeup I use as of now is the rose colored lip vasline and tinted sunscreen, but I do on rare occasions use lip tints and lip oils just because I find lip products less sensitizing in general. The rest of what would be my makeup money goes to skincare (avene, vaseline, adapalene, the ordinary, cosrx, etc).
The FitnessGram PACER Test is a multistage aerobic capacity test that progressively gets more difficult as it continues. Fashion and makeup throughout history is horrifying. Arsenic was used as green dye in dresses. Moisturizers in Egypt is known to have killed pharaohs by giving them cancer. Even now, fast fashion companies are getting caught with high levels of lead and other chemicals. I'm looking forward to see what new things we learn from Style Theory 💙
Arsenic was used in multiple dyes in multiple locations including paint, fabric flowers, and candies. It was most common in red and green. Green was just the most iconic color.
@B Steven me and my mom are allergic to carmine but ifs so hard to know if it's in your food since they will just say natural ingredients or Red dye 40 which means carmine in different words or synthetic red dye
I also think it’s worth mentioning the different cosmetics hold bacteria differently. A product in an airless pump would have way less bacteria on it than a cream product in an open jar. Same with A lipgloss wand that touches your skin and goes back in the tube versus a lipstick that you can sanitize before use. Something to think about :)
Possible Style Theory Idea: What outfit should you wear to a first date? I heard that wearing Red to a date makes you more romantic, but I want to go further. Should you wear a hat? A watch? What color, should you go monochrome Red, maybe wear a fancy suit instead? Should you wear a rose or floral perfume? Loving the new channel, Im definitely subscribing to this one.
Adding on to this: does the shade of red make a difference? Does wearing bright red have a different affect than blood, or maroon, or a more orangy color?
What I gathered from this video is to: -Close your toilet lid when you flush & either turn on the fan or crack the door when you shower -Wash your tools -Don’t horde makeup you’re not gonna use & throw out makeup that’s old I will still be using that discontinued Tarte blush, though. Those are my germs. I know the risks 😤
Yeah I was wondering how these things all affected the amount of bacteria that reached the make up… Like I always close the toilet lid before I flush, the make up is kept stored away a closed cupboard away from the sink/toilet/shower, and since I just live with my partner and my clingy cat, I always leave the door half open when I shower (in addition to turning on the fan). I ain’t no expert in bacteria, but I’m sure that some of these behaviours would lessen its reach or quantity, but either way it would probably just be better to keep the make up in a closet
You were right MatPat. I did throw away most of my make up, and disinfected/cleaned all my brushes after watching this. Your doing the world a big service with this video.
I really appreciate how you both mention other cultures and admit that there is so much that team theorist is not quite qualified to talk on. It's a really great balance of understanding that there are a lot of cultural histories, norms, and expectations
I did an entire presentation in school about 7 different poisons, the second one was Arsenic. One of my main plot points was, “Arsenic was also being sold to women in the Elizabethan era and later in the Victorian era, as a way to remove blemishes brighten/whiten their skin or prevent aging.”
As someone who works at a big makeup/ skincare store in the USA, I 100% agree with all of this! We also get teenagers who steal the testers we have on the shelf, and nothing disgusts me more.
@@GrizzlyBearable Sometimes, you need to. I never try them on my face, but I will swatch them on the backs of my hands so I can wash it off easily. If you need to color match or test whether a product causes allergic reactions, it's better to use a brand new applicator and test it on a small area of your skin rather than purchase something new and take it home only to realize it caused a reaction. I had my makeup done professionally by Smashbox and they had used a makeup holding spray as a finish. Well, later that day I started developing hives and I knew it had to be the spray because the other products had never caused a reaction before so I ended up having to return it after scrubbing my face in order to remove the spray. If you have an outbreak, it's better if it's a small, quarter sized swab on your hand that can be washed than your entire face.
Speaking as someone who uses makeup for stage performances at least once a month, I'm DEFINITELY guilty of not cleaning my makeup brushes nearly as often as I probably should!
Debunk Corsetry!!! There are a lot of common misconceptions about how it's oppressive, when tight lacing was just a fad for the higher class. And the lower class wore stays that were comfortable and used for working. Also modern fake corsetry is not made for a person, it is not one size fits all. When you got one properly sized for your hips and everything, they were actually very comfortable.
It would be nice to have smaller - therefore cheaper - packages so we didn’t have to waste so much of it replacing it every six months. I don’t want to buy a $40 palette if I can’t use it for ten years 😂
In Germany we have ArtDeco, where you buy the pans separately and keep them together in a magnetic pallet of your own choosing, meaning you can throw out individual pans and/or replace individual pans. I really enjoy that concept and have a lot of their makeup as a result. Also means my pallets actually only contain colours I use.
If Style theory sold makeup in amounts where it's actually conceivable to finish it by the expiration date, I would totally buy it. I think the big thing for consumers is they don't know exactly when it's going to expire, so they feel guilty if they have to throw out a ton of makeup because they couldn't plan on the expiration dates. Smaller palettes and portioning for tubes would go a long way.
Another interesting factor in makeup consumption is allergies/skin sensitivity. Gotta love sensitive skin that has no problem with my concealer and foundation combo to suddenly be like “It burns!” So then I have to go on the quest to find a new concealer or foundation and am forced to waste what is left of the previous one.
Your best bet is to swatch the products on your forearm and let them sit for about 10 minutes. That way, you know whether your skin will react or not. If you know your skin is on the sensitive side, you should look into testing mineral based powders, but definitely look at the ingredients. If you can figure out which ingredient is triggering the allergic reaction, you can skim the ingredients list and identify it before even testing it.
Oh. My. GOD. I wore Claire’s makeup (eyeshadow) in around 2016 or 2017 and I remember how unbearably painful it was, for years I thought it was just an allergic reaction. I HAD ASBESTOS NEAR MY EYES! I could have got permanent damage or even vision loss. I’m NEVER wearing ANY makeup again.
That's not how asbestos works. Asbestos is actually perfectly safe if it's just around skin and eyes, and is a heck of a lot less irritating than one of it's common replacements: fiberglass. ( _shudder_ ) The real problem with asbestos is that it gets airborne very easily, and hence can be inhaled into the lungs. The tiny fibers can sit in the lungs for years, decades even, causing just enough damage that cancer can eventually develop. So stop worrying about blindness and get any nasty coughs checked out.
I have a possible solution that will probably never happen. Make up companies put less make up in their products so they will be gone by the expiry date as well as coming with a little card that shows how to properly clean your stuff. Now this is the part that probably won’t happen, they make it cheaper as well. Giving how rich they are anyway they lower the prices for lowering the amount.
I think for stuff like that, it's best not to look to the popular brands like claire's and loreal. I know there are some men-focused beauty products who do leave cards that instruct what products to use in specific orders and how to use them, not sure about the expiration dates, though. Moral of the story, do some research, find lesser-known, but smarter cosmetic companies who know what they're doing, and order them online.
When I first got into makeup, I felt constantly pressured into buying the latest trendy products, but this is one of the rare times being overly money-conscious has helped me out, because I always tried limiting myself with the makeup I bought! If y’all wear makeup on the daily, my advice is to take note of your daily makeup routine and only buy the stuff that WILL get used - e.g., if you wear pinky brown eyeshadow and liquid liner, then just buy neutral tone palettes and liquid liner - even if that kaleidoscopic palette looks tempting, ask yourself if you’ll really use it or if it’ll just sit on your shelf for two years. Great video Mr MatPat, I’m loving the energy of these videos so far (stiletto murder, uncanny facial symmetry etc)
As someone who doesn't wear makeup at all, I found this super interesting, and also gave me the glee to know that my dislike for makeup wasn't entirely just because of the cost!
I know morphe got into a lot of trouble for including toxic ingredients in their eyeshadows without putting a warning to avoid the immediate eye area. They actually changed the formula to include it after the original release without saying anything. There's a reason they're currently declaring bankruptcy
None of the ingredients were "toxic." They're approved in the EU. The FDA is just incredibly outdated and hasn't deemed them safe based on their lack of distinction between dyeing and staining the skin. But yes, makeup companies are leaving themselves open to lawsuits by skirting that gray line.
Isn’t the whole point of eye shadow to go on your eye lids? Yeah that’s not your actual eye, but I doubt it’d have any problems getting into your eyes due to being so close to them
I used to perform in ballet and circus so I went through heaps of stage makeup but when it came to the things that expired quickly (like mascara) I only bought travel/sample sizes so I spent half as much and actually finished the products before they expired. Other things like foundation and grease paints that I went through a ton of, I would buy in full size, and when it came to eyeshadows, contour, highlighters and blushes I would buy as singles from colour pop and abh and keep them in carefully constructed magnetic pallets so I only ever had the colors that I needed/actually used as opposed to needing several small pallets or a giant pro pallet with a bunch of colors I'd basically never touch.
The thing I’m guilty of is keeping my makeup too long . I don’t wear makeup a lot so when I buy makeup I usually only use it maybe a couple times and then forget about it till I need it again 😂
Guilty of this when i started my makeup journey lol. I learned that i should buy makeup in little packaging and amounts instead of buyimg a big amount of makeup 😅
i have a girlfriend, i get called attractive pretty much every day, and yet matpat telling me to “keep looking sharp” made me significantly happier than it should have
…….I’m literally watching this being a teen girl in middle school going to high school knowing that makeup is unnecessary already yet knowing the best ways to keep 1 eyeshadow pallet in my closet along with cleaning my 1 brush after every use. I don’t even wear makeup and I have a sister who is younger than me and LOVES makeup
I never really wore makeup because I hated, and still hate, how it feels on my skin. I only ever begrudgingly wore cover-up for school picture day. This episode feels so vindicating.
In response to watching this episode with me, my mom informed me that she has makeup she inherited from my grandmother (who died 15 years ago) and knowing my grandmother she probably had it herself for ten…
mat! how do you and the team keep bull's-eyeing on creating channels that cater to my exact interests! I LIVE for style theories and dress history! SO happy with the new channel!!
So there are ways that you can clean your makeup that have become popular online lately, especially since the panini. I'd love a pt. 2 diving into how well these work. Ex: Cleaning an eyeshadow by scraping the top and spritzing w/alcohol. I've also seen ppl putting products into UV machines (like baby bottle sanitizers) and wonder how effective that is.
As a cosplayer, I think i can speak gor a big part of the cosplay community if i say that we often buy specific makeup products for a specific cosplay and use it for way to long, because we don't get to wear that cosplay often and replacing that specific item every few months is not only wasteful and expensive, but often it's even something that can't be found often
I think you won that bet, I had no idea about makeup being able to go bad or proper storage or cleaning your brushes. My Mom doesn't even clean her makeup off ever, so I will have to show her this episode...
With the edition of the new channel, I'd love to see a theory on why Mainstream Mens Fashion is so boring. Its bothered me for years, bc I go to a clothes store and for women there are hundreds of different generas, styles, fits, shoes, accessories, etc- but for men its like: Some jeans or slacks.. a t-shirt or sweater. maybe a Jacket if you're feeling spicy. either that or a suit.
As a girl, I agree. I am having a question about why women have lot of freedom to wear while men have only limits, like "Men must not wear pink because that's gay". Like really??? It's a stupid double standards i heard about.
Blame Beau Brummell. Look at men’s fashion and how fun it was before the 19th century, it was just as interesting as women’s, versus how it declined regency period onwards. Beau Brummell is a villain. Beau Brummell is my arch nemesis.
As someone who only occasionally wore makeup as a 20 something and younger, it blew my MIND when I found out makeup expires. I had stuff that had expired years ago. After that I started wearing it even less than before. Now I wear it like, once a year, tops. I should probably check if I have any now and chuck it. 😆
I am a fashion illiterate woman who has NEVER used makeup. It has been put on me a total of twice in as many decades. I am SO glad I never got into it. Especially now! 😅 That said, I am super excited for this channel!!
Thank you for posting this Matt & Theorists. My partner had a lot of make up that we needed to go through and after watching this, we made the conscious effort to purge a lot of old/expired make up sets/brushes. I want my partner to live a long and happy life and this helped give her motivation to get rid of a lot of old articles of make up that she either didn't use or knew were expired.
I'm proud of myself for being really rigorous about cleaning my makeup brushes. It's something I'm also always nagging my friends to do lmao 😅 And I bought one of those silicone makeup sponges that were briefly popular on beauty youtube instead of a beauty blender because it's so easy to clean the silicone one with just a quick wash!
I love this!!! I’ve been watching the Theory Channels for years now! So as someone who has gotten into environmentally-safe ornate fashion, I love that the Theorists are growing with me🥰🥰 I’m so ready to add the channel into my rotation😂. (Also soooo glad I caught this one on Launch day🙂)
I guess I’m in the minority; I checked all three boxes - I store my makeup in a cool dry place (I do my makeup on my computer desk while watching TH-cam), I wash my makeup brushes at least twice a week, and I have a spreadsheet where I list the dates when I opened each makeup and skin care product that I own with the PAO, so I know when to toss it 😅
I used to be that person that followed all beauty trends and thought I needed all the new trending things. I learned to always ask myself when I shop, do I have a pallette already with similar shades, do I really need this lipstick color if I only am going to use it a couple times? Along with the fact I use less makeup I've learned to declutter a lot of my products. Now most of my money goes to skincare. Which is a whole other problem lol.
MatPat has done it again. I'll be soaking my makeup brushes and getting a little makeup closet for my not expired palettes. This channel is not what I expected HOWEVER I love the creative space this is going to become!! I hope there will be tie ins to the clothing merch offered on your site as well!!
I noticed a massive improvement in my complexion when I stopped using concealer back during lockdown. Whenever I was working our out running errands I was wearing a mask, so why bother? It's been 3 years and I haven't gone back to using concealer since my complexion has improved, my acne has reduced and I just love NOT having matte gunk all over my face. I used the concealer for sensitive skin, too! Also: I store all my make-up in a metal tin inside my bedroom, NEVER in my bathroom.
Now that you mention it my skin has been better since quarantine began I always thought it was just because I'm a young adult now but im starting to think I need to never touch makeup again lol
This is making me realize something I never realized. I used to do my makeup in the bathroom exclusively growing up, but for the last 3 years I've been doing my makeup in my own room at my desk. I always got pimples doing my makeup in the bathroom, or at least some kind of skin irritation. That frequency has almost completely diminished when it comes to getting ready in my own room. And I never noticed until this video- Welp, I know I'm never going back to getting ready in the bathroom.
Man, I have never thought about bacterial development in my makeup, I felt so horrified that I couldn't continue watching... I'll move my mascara and eyeliner away from the bathroom in this very moment. Thank you
I'm already in LOVE with Style theory. Ive been watching a lot of your theories from all channels . I even have a playlist of some specific theories to fall asleep to
as a special effects makeup artist who uses the same brushes for everything, I wash my brushes/sponges between uses so I don't get fake blood in my concealer lol
I’m extremely happy that I’ve always kept my makeup in my closet after watching this, but also now I think I have some 8 year old eyeshadow to throw out…
You guys need to get Saifya and maybe even Cristine from Simply nailogical for collars when it comes to weird fashion and even makeup science cause that is such an easy extension of all this. I normally eat while watching any of your theory videos. It was TODAY when you finally made me feel bad about not washing my hands before eating. All that talk about "bacteria getting on your body" made me feel awful that I was putting it INSIDE my body. Kudos on that!
Mat, i know you're absolutely correct about everything in this video and while I do follow the idea of keeping my makeup as far away from the bathroom as possible, I can't bring myself to throw away my hundreds of dollars worth of 2-3 year old eyeshadow palettes 😭😭😭
All I could think of during this episode was that Matpat and Stephanie acually ate Steph’s makeup during the Food Theory episode where they salt their popcorn with their own tears 😅 It already was kinda gross, but this episode doesn’t make that one better 🙈
You should do an episode testing at home skin care methods. I swear by using 190 proof liquor like ever clear topically. It has reduced my acne a ton! Also softens my skin. It is also what I use for an after shave too. I am a man who has to shave pretty often.
This will be an interesting journey for me as someone who doesn't pay any attention to my looks or fashion but absolutely loves data, statistics, and science. I'm excited to see what's in store for this new channel and how it will change my perceptions of style.
I got a 2/3 score. For things like foundation, Concealer, and Primer I do follow the expiration for those. But for Eyeshadow and blush.... You can take that from my cold dead hands, I spent $20+ on that pallet and I will be buried with it. I do spray it with an anti bacterial spray when I clean my brushes but otherwise its just there.
I think this video gave me a new hobby to make my own makeup. I know what would be in it and I can make as much as I want and as much as I need. Thank you Style Theory Team!
Watched this when it came out and didn’t throw out my makeup.. just used my makeup today because it’s all I had and never bought new stuff and now I have itchy eyes and acne 😀 now here’s a theory: what if someone were to create a reusable makeup pallet and the individual colors could pop out and be replaced as needed in an environmentally friendly way? Now MatPat, ur probably the only TH-camr I’d ever consider buying makeup from and u got the science and marketing skills to enter this industry, when u releasing a theorist makeup line düd????

I didnt care because i was able to save more money I figured out what it was like 3 years ago when i had to catch a sheep for my internship, Woolfat. I got over the allergy but makeup is still a no-go for me. You dont need it to be beautiful, beauty comes from within.
I volunteer at a dressing service in my hometown mostly doing makeup and hair. Our tools are cleaned as they are used, as well as before and after each use. Our waxes, paints and powders are always crafted as needed. ... I myself, am rebuilding my makeup (I lost my collection because of the stupidity of someone else), but am not hyper focused on that at the present.
This is exactly why I love watching makeup being mixed into slimes, they're already probably expired and you're making something pretty out of something that would never be used
This video made me realize that I may be weird for cleaning my make up brushes usually immediately after I finish my routine, if not the same day, but I am at least right to do it :D (and yes it's because I am super anxious about the possibility or bacteria growth)
Here's a makeup theory for you to dig into: does using makeup damage your skin in such a way that you need _more makeup_ to fix the damage you've done with your earlier makeup, creating a giant feedback loop of perceived "need" that would never have happened if you didn't use makeup in the first place?
I have felt so bad about having a small makeup collection because I throw out anything liquid usually after a year or two at the most. I always feel like I need 6 daytime lipsticks that match all of my outfits and are everything from glittery to subtle. I’m going to keep experimenting with makeup but as I figure out the colours I like, I’m going to consider only ever buying makeup I expect to use.
Im working on it now but with the way things are marketed, its so easy to get swept up in the "I need the newest thing" mindset even though I don't need it

Along with lead, crushed ants were also a common ingredient in ancient Egyptian makeup.
@@brandonprater4613, crushed ants are STILL used today (carmine).
How do you sanitize lipstick?
And obviously dry, powder products have the longest shelf life
Possible Style Theory Idea: What outfit should you wear to a first date?
I heard that wearing Red to a date makes you more romantic, but I want to go further. Should you wear a hat? A watch? What color, should you go monochrome Red, maybe wear a fancy suit instead? Should you wear a rose or floral perfume?
Loving the new channel, Im definitely subscribing to this one.
Adding on to this: does the shade of red make a difference? Does wearing bright red have a different affect than blood, or maroon, or a more orangy color?

What I gathered from this video is to:
-Close your toilet lid when you flush & either turn on the fan or crack the door when you shower
-Wash your tools
-Don’t horde makeup you’re not gonna use & throw out makeup that’s old
I will still be using that discontinued Tarte blush, though.
@@yapudjus Yes, but to make it look as if you are not aging(or at least your skin), you will still age tho obviously.

As someone who works at a big makeup/ skincare store in the USA, I 100% agree with all of this! We also get teenagers who steal the testers we have on the shelf, and nothing disgusts me more.
I can't even convince myself to USE the testers... 🤢
@@VintageMemory What part of her post surprised you? 😆
I don’t want to buy a $40 palette if I can’t use it for ten years 😂
nah not gonna happen cuz less profits
In Germany we have ArtDeco, where you buy the pans separately and keep them together in a magnetic pallet of your own choosing, meaning you can throw out individual pans and/or replace individual pans. I really enjoy that concept and have a lot of their makeup as a result. Also means my pallets actually only contain colours I use.
😂😂😂 this!!! Like I have atleast 5 eyeshadow palettes....even the ones I don't use I'm not throwing them away
@@miriams.4341I think that someone could make a fortune bringing that to the US.
@@miriams.4341 I love that!
I used to hate the fact that I'm allergic to makeup but after seeing this I'm convinced its a blessing
I avoid this by giving makeup the proverbial middle finger. Can't get a reaction to something not present.
My eczema prone skin feels this on a spiritual level
Oh. My. GOD. I wore Claire’s makeup (eyeshadow) in around 2016 or 2017 and I remember how unbearably painful it was, for years I thought it was just an allergic reaction. I HAD ASBESTOS NEAR MY EYES! I could have got permanent damage or even vision loss. I’m NEVER wearing ANY makeup again.
what really shocked me is that makeup doesn't have to be tested before it's sold. Seriously how is that allowed to happen.
You can wear makeup age, just have to check ingredients lists, sucks but necessary I guess now to know to do.
That's not how asbestos works. Asbestos is actually perfectly safe if it's just around skin and eyes, and is a heck of a lot less irritating than one of it's common replacements: fiberglass. ( _shudder_ )
The real problem with asbestos is that it gets airborne very easily, and hence can be inhaled into the lungs. The tiny fibers can sit in the lungs for years, decades even, causing just enough damage that cancer can eventually develop. So stop worrying about blindness and get any nasty coughs checked out.
@@gavinrobinson8925 it really is funny to me how America both LOVES to regulate, and yet also has such DATED regulations compared to the EU.
@@jennatavares4695 What do they regulate? They don’t even regulate guns…
Haha I was gonna say this exact thing, but now I don't have to 😎
0:43 Plus… theater. All actors wear makeup, even the most manly of men. Makeup ain’t femme, my guys, makeup is paint for your face. Easy peasy.
