A woman's experience with ureteral stent pain after stone lithotripsy and stent procedure

  • A patient candidly describes her experience after ureteral stent placement and lithotripsy by Dr. John C. Lin at Sunrise Urology. Kidney stone pain is bad enough. Ureteral stent should not make kidney stone pain worse, but may help decrease the risk of kidney infection.

Thank goodness I only had the stent for 8 days…it was the most horrendous pain ever. Was so relieved when it was removed. I don’t know how people keep that thing in for weeks or months. Mine had a string and I would’ve pulled it out myself if they didn’t take it out.
And I’ve given birth 3 times….this pain was a million times worse than labor.

I have had a stent twice. 1st was following kidney surgery and I had no serious symptoms. The doctor who removed it in office, via cyscopy did not allow enough time for the numbing medicine to take effect, so the removal was very painful. 2nd was after kidney stone removal. I had a lot of typical symptoms, mild pain and cramping, frequency, urgency, to the point of needing medication. But the urologist who I was going to made sure I was give adequate time for the lidocaine to work, before removal. So each experience is unique and not everyone has the same experience.

I have a swollen kidney and an obstruction on my kidney. My urologist wants me to get a kidney stent and I am so scared. I am scared of the pain, nausea, infection, fever, chills, blood in urine, if it gets dislodged puncturing other organs, and any other side effects I may have to put up with that my doctor didn’t even care to mention. I have been through 6 major surgeries in my life and I am not prepared to go through all this. I would need anesthesia to put the stent and to take it out as well. I have zero tolerance for pain

The ureteric stent was so painful for me, I had to lie down after pee every time. Even after its removal, the cramp and burning pain continued. I am on second day after removal and still in bad pain right now.

I have one in the left ureter after stone removal on 12th October. Was very painful first two days as expected and was given pain medication to use when severe. I have not taken them so far and the pain when I pee is bearable. My Urologist is saying I have to be with it for 2 months. I had a large kidney stone 1.2cm lodged in the distal 1/3 but had never felt any pain or symptoms as they say people with kidney stones experience but was damaging my kidney slowly. Take home (1) regular check ups (2) don’t be scared with what others say each patient reacts differently

Looks like everyone reacts differently. For me, It was uncomfortable but not painful. Peeing post-procedure was like peeing fire, though (LOL). I removed the stent myself after 5 days and did have a few hours of pain afterwards. Took hydrocodone/acetaminophen, aleve, oxybutynin and tamsulosin. In retrospect,i should have premedicated before pulling the stent. I bled quite a bit until the stent was removed but I am also on a anticoagulant. I will have another ureteroscopy in April and will definitely premedicate before pulling the string! Good luck to all!

Just had mine done today, surgery no complications. Had stent placed today, very mild spams. Very little pain. Only taking tynenol extra strength when needed. I urinated immediately with next to no pain. Pain in itself is subjective however, I have come to see and understand that a) many over react eggxarate. B) possible women have it easier. My stone was in upjunction between kidney and ureter. If I can withstand the discomfort ( not pain) so can you. It's not bad as people say
