  • Showing the process of what it's like to get a stent removed after kidney transplant surgery. The stent is used to keep the connection between the new kidney and bladder open as it heals after kidney transplant surgery.
I hope this can help others.

Eric, you've done a good job on this video. You avoided the unnecessary drama that some of these personal experience videos have, and just matter of factly told what occurs during the procedure. I'm scheduled for a cystoscopy a week from today, and I must admit I'm stressing, but your video has settled me down a bit. I know it'll be OK, but nevertheless it's still a bit nervous waiting for the cystoscopy to take place. Thanks for making this video, and I wish you well. Ray

Ok the real... just had The stent removed today. IT SUCKED! It only took about 45 seconds but it was worse than i could have imagined. THAT SAID, it was quick. No numbing shot in for me, they wiped it on the camera and in they go. The water was unsettling and uncomfortable. I was begging to be done 20 seconds into it. As soon as the procedure was finished, I felt pretty good. No real pain and glad it was over. Urinating was painful , but do yourself a favor go to your local drugstore and get an Over-the-counter Urinary pain relief pills. HELPED EMENSLEY! Like many of you, I search the comments to be reassured that it wasn't as bad as some people were making that out to be, Just remember short-term pain for long-term gain! I feel great.
    Now that it's all done.

I have a stent now that needs to stay in for two weeks. I just got it and I'm already dreading having to get it removed. Those stents are made to stay in place and it takes a pretty hard tug to get them out. I hate that first day when a stent comes out because I know I'll be spending the day under a heating pad.

I had a Urologist who had horrible bedside manner. First he was angry with me that I hadn't passed the stones (like I was holding them in). They harvested the stones under general anesthesia and inserted a stent. A couple of weeks later I went to his office and he wanted to leave the stent in, but I was leaving for a month for my 50th birthday cruise on the Mediterranean. So he removed it, I was stressed as they put it in under general. So he reluctantly gave me a shot of valium so I was out of it. But the psycho woke me up after he removed the stent and said he thought I'd want to see it. WTH - he was dangling the bloody stent over me. Really didn't need that, but he was the doctor assigned in the hospital. He retired shortly after that which was good for everyone.

Wished I had seen this before (or maybe not) I had my stent removed. Except that they took forever getting yours removed. It was very uncomfortable to me plus they at least gave you a gown and sounds like they cleaned you up after. I agree with the shyness part but I wanted that stent out. Think my doctor may have worked me in his schedule so that may have been the "rush". Still think they could give you some "laughing gas" or something. God bless and hope you are doing well.

Same here, but I heard it from a nurse a couple of days after Transplant . I still haven’t confronted any of the doctors that I spoke to you before the Transplant about why they left out that I would have a stent. Fortunately, or unfortunately, however, you want to look at it, I have had things for over 20 years before that so I knew enough to find a urologist who would remove it of the general anesthesia by the way, I had to go outside of the medical facility that I was in to have that done.

I didn't have a kidney transplant, but just got my urether stent removed due to a kidney stone using a flexible cystocope (male, 53 years old). Overall, the pain was mild and bearable using just local jelly anesthesic. It's more uncomfortable than painful although the nurse told me that some patients find it very painful although most do not. I feel fortunate to belong to the latter group. The most painful part is when the tip of the scope passes through the prostate (as it's narrower there) but that is only for a split second. I give that pain rating a 6/10. Once the tip gets to the bladder, the pain dissapears. The next painful part is when the urologist retracts the stent out of the body. That pain felt like 5/10 when it goes through the penis but only last a second or so. Not bad at all. The worst part is that you will pee blood for the next day or two and the urine burning sensation in the first hour is pretty painful (7/10), but that urination pain subsides quick even just a few hours later. Good luck guys, it's really not that bad. - Toronto, Canada
