  • Welcome to my Channel!

    Hi friends! In this week's video I'm showing you how I made an apartment-friendly pet potty & how you can do it on the cheap too!
    This method is much cheaper than most systems on the market & is a much better alternative for your pets & the environment. The sod/grass naturally deteriorates & when you're ready for a new one, simply roll it up & recycle it! No more throwing out wee-wee/potty pads & your pets get to experience real grass.
    We live in an apartment multiple floors up & unfortunately aren't home 24/7 to take our dogs outside. Instead of having them hold it or leaving them outside until we get home, they can relieve themselves whenever they please.
    This DIY is definitely not for everyone but it's one that we've managed to make work for us!

    Where do you throw it away after? Does it make a mess when you are trying to pick it up? We are about to move into an apt with a small patio so it might work for us but there is no door to the outside from the patio so we would have to bring the whole contraption back through the house. MIght be too messy.

      @HeatherMoxieDIYed  7 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      +Amy Kippin it's definitely not a super enjoyable clean up lol we would put on gloves, roll it up, & place it in a large bag to carry it down to recycle. If not it would be pretty messy so it depends on how comfortable you are with doing that. I hope that helps! ☺️

      The one problem we have, my dog is 14 and not a puppy. Why is she not potty trained yet you ask? lol She has been on a medication for over 10 years for chronic bronchitis which acts like a diuretic. We take her out a million times a day and she still pees inside (mostly at night). Some days are worse than others. We have always has had tile floors and puppy pads and for the most part she hits the pad but she likes to go on door mats and bathroom rugs when we forget to shut the doors at night. We have even tried diapers but the amount of times she has to go out in one day becomes such a hassle taking it on and off. It's hard. We love her. She is 10 lbs of spoiled rotten rat terrier. But it's hard.

      Amy Kippin sounds like you love your dog just like I love mine. My dog is totally potty trained so I have no issues but with the condition your dog has maybe it be possible to keep him or her on linoleum away from rugs

      @@HeatherMoxieDIYed Does it break apart when you roll it up when cleaning up? Did you have issues with urine soaking through onto the crate pad? And what do you use to clean the crate pad?

    A small addition could be to drill several small holes in the center so you can put a catch bowl underneath it. This way you can rinse the grass clean regularly and the dirty water will just drain into your catch to be emptied (instead of draining all over your patio/flooring). 😊

      We are building this for our big boy who has really bad hips and has a hard time walking to the potty spots outside, but we are attaching a hose to feed into the bushes so he can go whenever he needs and we won't have to replace it so often!

    We used a Step 2 kids sandbox, drilled a few tiny drainage holes underneath (this is on our balcony off master bedroom on a single house - may not want drainage holes if your balcony is above someone else's patio : ), then we filled it with mulch to avoid the need to replace sod so often. It is about 4 inches tall, but not a big deal to our 65 lb. female Boxer mix. I clean up any solid waste daily and flush down the toilet, which is about 10 ft. away. I use a 30 gal. trash bag about 3x per year to shovel out part of the mulch and mix in fresh. One could replace all of it or do it less often or not at all - depending on the weather, how many pets you have using it, etc. The mulch can get a little funky after a few months, that's why I choose to do it.
    Our girl was completely perplexed by this whole concept at first, but had stopped using the patio door inserted doggie door off our family room where we had a mulched area penned in for her. We live near the woods and believe something scared her at night as she stopped going out at night and began having accidents. May be TMI, but since our area is secluded, my husband just took her out one night, peed in the box himself, and then she couldn't wait to get in there and claim her territory! The sandbox is super heavy duty and I got mine on eBay for about $60. The mulch is about $4 per bag. The sandbox also came with a lid which we don't currently use, but is nice to know we have in case we needed to use it for some reason.

    Awesome!! We were ordering grass patches from doggielawn and we have been paying 32, now up to almost 45 bucks a grass patch! She goes through one every 2 weeks. Used to go through one in one week!! We already have a nice thick 2x4 plastic liner for it so I'm definetly going to get a roll of sod to use from now on! SO much cheaper!!👏👏👏

    This is a great idea. I have always hated the idea of dogs holding their pee or poo all day until you get home. That can be 8-12 hours. Not good for the bladder and can lead to infection. Or if you want to sleep in or is sick and don't feel like getting up to let them out to go potty, this is great also.

    Thank you very much for your interesting video!
    About the disposal of the sod: how about using a washable carpet? We have several of them indoors as an emergency measure for new/ill dogs.
    They aren't very cheap, but come in rather acceptable designs (even grass), last very long and you just put them into the washing machine (60 C) and dryer. Originally they are intended for keeping the dirt and moisture out in shop entrances. They come in thin or thick..
    Friends use sod, they put it onto their garden compost (if you plan compost right, the garden bits won't smell).

There are three sizes to choose from. They're super sturdy. Petsafe also sells the best Doggie doors on the market IMO.

    There are so many pot grow shops now, one could get hydroponic mats of jute or coir, grass seed, and grow your own pee pads as often as necessary!! Grow them in manageable sizes that you can take outside and water on your lawn or driveway occasionally once they are being used by your pet. Should last longer too.

      Thereasa Huff Fake grass is a fail. I have tried it and it is almost impossible to get the urine smell out. If you live in an apartment without an outdoor place where you can use a garden hose it would be horrible to clean indoors.
      I have the basic concept but instead of grass I use sheets of newspaper. Easy to dispose of in the garbage.
      Where would you dispose of the grass and soil after it is used if you live in an apartment.

    • @HeatherMoxieDIYed

      +Dru6190 we've tried synthetic grass before & we could never get the smell under control lol now we're able to get 2-3 weeks depending on the dogs' water intake (dilution of their urine). Since you'd be doubling up you might be able to get longer but with a 70 pound pup it may only last about 2 weeks.

    • @CoCMember

      You could play clumping cat litter underneath the sod to absorb the urine + odor. Scoop the litter up and place in a can. There's also some enzyme sprays that cut down on urine odor. Just a thought.

    I want to do this but I want it slanted at the end so when my dog pees I can water it down and it all drains to one side out the patio. I live on the first floor and my patio is covered halfway and there's 20ft trees infront of the patio so noone can see and there's no other apartments around. I want it to drain out into the side of the patio where I plan to put rocks going downhill(there is also a hill infront of my patio that is filled with trees) so itll just drain to where it sould be drained to. Hopefully I won't have to replace the grass as much.

    I'm looking to do something like this as some outdoor space for my cats on my apartmwnt patio. Do you know if the sod will last longer since they will be using it as more of a lounge/roll space than a potty place? TIA!

    • @HeatherMoxieDIYed
      @HeatherMoxieDIYed  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Mallory JM, I think this would be perfect for a lounge space. You would probably get more use out of it if you bought a small roll of artificial sod since your cats won't be using it as a bathroom. Let me know what you decide & I hope that helps :)

      @@PoorGirlsGuide Did you buy the sod at Star? How did it work out? I'm thinking of buying some next weekend if they have rolls of it like the video. Especially if it's 2 feet for $5 as the person above said.

    • @PoorGirlsGuide
      @PoorGirlsGuide 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@profduck715 I did buy it there! It was that cheap too. I ended up making a small round patch of grass for my kitty, it lasted about a month but I over-watered it and threw it out because I had a gnat army camping out in it. I'd do it again but this time in a larger container, preferably one the same size as the sod patch because cutting sod with a box cutter (what I did) isn't really fun lol

  • @sequoiahouston

    I've been looking for something like this....The services are entirely too expensive but this seems like it's a great, affordable alternative. I have a yorkie so this seems like it'd work great for us.
    I was initially thinking of just "growing" the grass in a box, but from the other videos and resources I've seen about the sod it seems like that wouldn't be a great idea because of the smell? Any thoughts on why you wouldn't just grow the grass vs buying new sod every few weeks?

    • @mrsdaisy1948
      @mrsdaisy1948 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wish she would answer our questions before we make this!! And why do you need to change the sod every three weeks?

    • @nimiar
      @nimiar 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I know replacing it every three weeks is because the grass will die eventually, since the pet urine kills it, but it may take longer depending on your dog. If you can maintain the grass for longer without it getting smelly or dying then go for it!
      Re: growing the grass vs buying it, I would imagine the grass takes longer to grow than it would die off, unless you've got very green thumbs! Plus the sod is inexpensive and easy to roll out a new piece each time. But more power to you if you can grow your own.

    • @lindaharris5858
      @lindaharris5858 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think she has to replace the sod because she didn't put in a hole for drainage so she can't really rinse the urine from the grass. Putting in a drainage hole I think will eliminate the need to replace the sod so quickly and also eliminate the odor. I plan on making one for my 16 year old Yorkie as we live in a second floor apartment

    Do you notice extra water/liquids building up underneath after you water it everyday or does the sod soak it up? Also, what's the reason for the plywood and wheels? Is it just to elevate it more and make it easy to move around? I was going to invest in the porch potty but it's so expensive so please let me know. Thanks!!!

    • @nayjavu
      @nayjavu 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Denise Aberin I was thinking the same thing. What about putting a metal grate between the sod and tray, and putting kitty litter on the tray? That way it soaks up the liquids so maybe it's less messy when you have to go to change out the sod?

    If you were to find a deeper tray and plant the sod into the soil, would the rolls last longer or would they die anyways due to ammonia in the pee?

    • @iinRez
      @iinRez 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I am experimenting with thin layers of potting soil and I found that yes it does last a little longer. However its crucial to rinse !!!!_lightly_!!!!! after they pee or else you will get dead spots that get swampy and stink. It's a constant battle to not get it too wet thought so be mindful.

      Laura Gameson it WILL smell after a while ONLY IF YOU DON'T RINSE IT. I ordered a porch potty and I had no trouble with the sod smelling because there was a draining system. but this doesn't have one, butt you could make 1 hole in the middle and place a large basin under it to catch the water when you're rinsing it out. I hope this helped.
