    2500 cummins running stock 3.73 on 40s. After tuning, it's running 18mpg on level grounds. But, tow/hauling that dropped down to 12mpg. I'm looking at 4.56 for fuel economy. I'd like to tow/haul as well. I'm stuck between 4.56 or 4.88

    Great info, can you do a video like this on the G56 Cummins?

    • @Connor_Cripps
      @Connor_Cripps 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a G56 truck with 37s and 3.42s and have given this quite some consideration. With the stock tire height the truck was very happy towing and still returned good fuel economy empty. Now with 37s it behaves like it has 3.08s. Pulling some of the big grades on I15 for example it felt like it was caught between gears with stock tuning and 11k behind me. Much of what Nick alludes to is that with modern emissions equipment you can't lug and over fuel the truck to drive out from under the problem anymore. Myself I'll likely switch to 3.73s which will restore the powerband at the speeds I tow. Consider this though: the max tow 3500s have 4.11 gears which put the engine at 1900ish at 70mph(for reference). If I was towing much heavier and wanted to improve performance under those conditions I'd go to 4.11s. With my tire height and transmission I'd end up within a few rpm of the same. If you want to run some numbers quickly for yourself, crawlpedia has a great speed/rpm calculator so you can see what your engine speeds will be in direct as well as overdrive.

    Does anyone know if you change your gear ratio on your truck should you change install a torque converter with a different stall speed or does it affect your torque converter at all

    Really like you channel....I just started learning more about my 2004.5 LLY with a 4.10 gear that is completely stock other than the tire size I'm running. Truck calls for a 245/75/16 but I stepped it up to a 285 width...will that make any difference in the curve you mentioned? Just a side note...Im installing a Banks cold air intake with the S&B turbo elbow inlet. Wish I had seen your mod first before ordering the S&B part. I am a new subscriber to your channel and looking forward for many more informing videos. Thanks,

      If it's all stock and no one changed the gears, than it's 3.73. No 01-10 duramax pick up came with anything but a 3.73. Even if it has the gt5 (4.10) rpo, its automatically canceled out with the duramax option. Just some info, it's a topic that's beat like a dead horse lol

    Excellent video. Really appreciated the simplified explanation.
    I’ve been wanting to understand this for awhile now.
    I have a 2019 F350 drw with 3.55 but I’m now running 22’s x 35’s and a service bed weighing around 2000 pounds and I pull a 34’ fifth wheel for now and about to move up to a 45’ toy hauler
    Trying to decide between going to 4.10 gears or 4.30 gears
    Appreciate any thoughts

    • @Duramaxtuner
      @Duramaxtuner  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can tell you the 4.30 gears in the F450 work really well in my experience, similar weight. It’ll be thirsty, but the extra grunt of the 4.30 would be my choice.

    • @dustintheriot7619
      @dustintheriot7619 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Duramaxtuner well right now it’s thirsty at 12 in town and 9 towing with this current combo.
      I know the 4.30 would tow the moon but was worried about running rpm’s when not towing. However the extra bed weight with tools I figured would help balance

    I've got 35s on my LBZ and it screams when speed limits are at 80 and i go about 90 on interstates. Is there a way I can get back close to a stock setup so that way my truck does create a lot of drive pressure and high egts? I was looking a different gear sets either a 4:10 or 4:30 no sure but I'm definitely open to what you guys recommend and any info about drive pressure. Do you think that because of my tires its causing truck to create excess drive pressure and ultimately ruin my turbo? I got a built trans and all the air via an intake kit and if I ease into my truck if you will it won't down shift unless the truck reaches about 75% or higher but sometimes if I give it a quick sudden spike in RPM it would down shift and put into 4th unlocked and would totally scream and go way to fast for me from either a lock 5th or 6th. I don't have your tunes on my truck but i was wondering if you've had someone experience this issue or something similar and what kind of corrections you've made. I have the strongest suspicion that me tune and the shift points are really bending me and my wallet over. Thanks

    Great info. I am running a LLY with 35” tires and would love some pointers on what to do with the gearing. Would oversize tires and stock gears contribute to high EGT’s when towing at freeway speeds? I have done the turbo inlet and have a new down pipe to put on it.. gear set might be my next step.
    Thanks

    • @Duramaxtuner
      @Duramaxtuner  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would regear with 35 inch tires for sure. I also have an 05 LLY with 33 inch tires. I'd like to eventually go to a 4.10 gear and do the 5 to 6 speed upgrade. Make sure when asking for a tune you measure the actual tire size. A 35 really only measures at 33.xxx when mounted on the vehicle. My 33 only measures 31.xxx, just something to keep in mind.

    I am putting a 1995 Cummins in my 1978 Bronco. My ultimate endgame is for fuel efficiency as I’ll be using it for daily driving and road trips as well as off roading and occasionally pulling a small travel trailer. For the gearing I planned on running 37s with my 3.50 gears which put me at about 1650 rpm at 75 mph. I did this with the intention of putting myself in the peak power range at highway speeds. Is this the most efficient setup I could be running? Or did the larger tires widen my power window into being inefficient?

    I know Ford has a 10 speed transmission. 3.55 is there more common gear ratio on single wheel trucks with the Power Stroke. Would it be better to go to a different gear ratio on the Tremor since it has 35 inche tires on it.

    • @Duramaxtuner
      @Duramaxtuner  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly, with the extra power from the tune the truck feels dialed in. If you are only doing over the road towing I might consider it. That being said, I don't think there will be a lot of Tremor owners that will need to do a gear change (unless they go to much larger tires).

    I'm getting ready to buy new tires but I want a smaller size. I have a 2014 GMC 3500HD dually and pull a 42ft, 16K trailer. I want to get the RPM up a bit higher to pull hills better but not affect it to much when unloaded. I have a Banks Autominder program installed. 235/80-17 stock to 245/75-17. Diameter is 1/4 inch less. Am I better off changing the gear ratio? At 65 I'm at 1600 RPM's.

    • @Duramaxtuner
      @Duramaxtuner  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Or just buy custom tuning from us and you wont have to worry about needing a gear change since the extra power will get you the results you're looking for.

  • @wipatriot510

    So how does this all apply when you do a tire upsize, then do a gear change to match the tire upsize...???
    Example, 2002 GMC 2500HD, stock tire size, 245/75-16, 3.73 gears...new tire size, 35x12.50-18, new gears 4.30...

    What gear ratio do you recommend for lb7 with 35s and 3.73?

    • @Duramaxtuner
      @Duramaxtuner  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A tuned LB7 on 35 inch tires usually has no problem pulling the factory 3.73 gear. If you’re towing heavy you may consider a 4.11 but without the double overdrive (6th gear) it cruises on the highway with higher revs in factory trim.

    • @jsav5845
      @jsav5845 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @ Hank H Yes it will help drastically, mine improved by 8mpg. Also your truck will be more responsive and healthier, If you're deleting it anyway. If you leave the emissions on, it will still be more responsive and have better fuel economy. Just not as happy with the soot being recycled through your system.

    • @Flyfishing57
      @Flyfishing57 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jsav5845 what would I expect the mileage to be then? Also what kind of soot problems does it cause? Sorry for all the questions I'm trying a injector cleaner right now for some previous white smoke, any ideas?

    • @derekm3304
      @derekm3304 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hank H Y bridge and EGR will become clogged over time. Look up EGR deletes or Y bridge replacements and see the build up in them. If you’re gonna tune my suggestion would be delete. If you’re wanting to leave it on find a tuner that can tune and leave emissions in tact. At the very least install EGR blocker plates. Just my .02 for what it’s worth

    • @Steve_I
      @Steve_I 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm assuming an lb7 from the white smoke comment. Tuning can help with mileage. Depends on how you drive it after lol and assuming it's a federal emissions lb7, you have nothing to delete. But save up for injectors, you'll be doing them soon
