Yes. It is expensive for a Chinese Epiphone. The only new Epiphones worth paying over $1k are the USA models made by Gibson. There’s a reason your guitars cost what they cost. If you don’t believe it, go play one of these Chinese guitars. You will feel it instantly.
Great feature. Shame about the QC issues. That always bothers me with all sorts of gear. As far as the split coils go, I still have an 80s Vantage Avenger with Split coils and use it to prerecord new ideas and noodle. Still sounds great.
I know a few people that have bought these. There's a problem with the binding on some of them. It was bad enough to warrant returns. The replacements were not a whole lot better. This one is not as bad as others that I've seen.
They did a great job with these. The spec sheet on the Fluence pickups will explain them more, and they are a wonderful set. I'm impressed. Very, very impressed.
Those Fishman pickups, it’s actually a stack of PCBs in there, all the copper tracing replaces the traditional wire wrap, but there’s alternate pathways. The split and voicing switching just changes which PCB path is used. (Usually it’s vintage voiced and modern voiced).
Man you are right it is CLEAR as a bell. I can even hear it on my laptop. Your playing is continuing to get cleaner too. sounds great. I like the guitar for sure and I did not before video
Yes this mostly because of the low impedance of the pickups. They can achieve this because they are active. It's a misnomer to think of active pickups as good for only high gain sounds. The whole point of the prophecy series is to get a classic shaped guitar that not only has the paf style sound you associate with Gibson but also a modern contemporary sound. The prophecy series is probably the best thing Epiphone has come up with recently. Think of it as a sheep in wolf's clothing.
I was hoping to see that binding under the black light. it's probably normal creme like you said, but it's the contrast that we notice. the brushed hardware is one of the main features that creates the unique look on this one. and using a white nut would require a very white one, so black works better, no yellowing. it's the small details that count. obviously the pickup covers look great but I could live without the Fishman rig underneath. on imports they are selective about where they put the time in, and the routs are not detailed much at all. but it's really something nice.
I'm pretty sure Epiphone started using a full size diamond inlay on the headstock of all of their customs a couple years ago. My Epi Joe Bonamassa has the full size as well. I purchased the Cantrell Epi Wino and it also has the full size diamond headstock inlay. After a string change and setup, it's an awesome guitar. Hope you do a review of that one as well.
I'm pretty sure thats correct as my Epi LP custom silverburst has fullsize diamond headstock inlays. I put EMG 81/85s and Gotoh keystone locking tuners on it. After a set up, including a nut reset, it's come alive! IMHO $1149 is too much for an artist model Prophecy. I've got $1065 into my silverburst with straplocks and the same black case.
The other Prophecy's are amazing. Satin finish (so neck as well), and the belly cut is awesome. But the fact that this comes with a case makes the price only $100 for a signature. So if I was a big fan, it's worth it. But for playing, the more modern Prophecy's DOMINATE!
It arrived safe and sound today, thank you very much! And thanks for not putting those stickers on it lol!! I got this one because I like the way it looked in the photos. I have to say, those photos do not do it justice!! I already have a Prophecy V and absolutely love it. It's a real beast when I put it through my Mark V 5 : 25. With this I will have more options because the Vs and Futuras only have 2 push pull pots, so both pickups have to have the same voicing on and split or not. Thank you for the honest review!
I have a mid 90's Epiphone Les Paul with a natural birds eyes top and with the yeas of being in the case it turned dark amber, beautiful. I wish I could share a picture of her.
What I think the big thing about a Custom is binding on the headstock. I love binding on the headstock because when it's on the neck only, it diminishes the headstock. I actually prefer the Studio because there's no binding, so the guitar looks balanced. For what you get on that Epiphone Custom, that's not a bad price! I love ebony fretboards too!!
Jerry's WINO is the best looking Les Paul Custom to come out of Epi OR Gibson in a loooooooong time. Don't get me wrong the white is beautiful, but my WINO is insanely good. Not to mention I changed out ALL the hardware for aged high quality gold bridge, tailpiece, brass tailpiece posts, brass bridge posts, locking tuners, real bone nut, SwitchCraft toggle, treble bleed and Bare Knuckle Vitamin series capacitors. So needless to say a BEAST!!!
Actually, ALL of the new customs from the prophecy and the original collection , have the Large diamond inlay on the headstocks. I think the dealers just haven’t changed the stock photos online. All of the Epiphone customs that I have seen in person all have the large split diamond 🤘🏻
Active pup splitting is better bc it cuts one coil off so it is an actual single coil unlike a tapped or split mode on passives and EMG has been doing this since 1990ish when the 89 came out.
I sound like a broken record...I love Epiphone. The only negative I have for them in the 12 guitars I've purchased since 2020 is.......one has frets that needed a fret file. One. Was leaning towards the Wino with this one, but hmmm......
gotta say as a bassist, i think this is a fantasic sounding guitar in all the modes, i dont understand why some guitarists are reluctant to fancy electronics, as you said roll the volume for standard humbucker, up the volume in single coil, max volume for standard active sound
I had 2 Gibson's. Les Paul studio, special. Junk garbage. I traded them in. Bought Epi sg prophecy, and Les Paul prophy. Also bought Epi sg standard .love them absolutely blown away. So I bought the Epi Rosa Corso, zakk Wylde, and I'm gonna have to grab this one two
@@hkguitar1984 then you must try these they have a PAF style sound option that sounds every bit of awesome as you'd imagine. One thing active pickups have over passive pickups is low impedance which allows them to pick up more harmonic content. So definitely check out the prophecy series the flame tops and bursts are to die for the are gorgeous. My favourite is the aged tiger burst.
@@SionynJones I can certainly appreciate the positives you've listed, however a poly guitar just isn't for me. Some of my guitars I've kept and played for 30 years or more. The poly finished instruments age terribly. All of my lacquer finished guitars have aged beautifully and really reflect my use and wear in a way I find very appealing. Its all about personal preferences. I'm not saying anything negative about the Epiphone instruments, I'm just saying after keeping and playing a single instrument for over 30 years I personally prefer the lacquer finish.
My Epiphone Les Paul custom prophecy plus has mother of pearl and abalone whole keyboard and headstock along with quilted heritage cherry sunburst came with hardcase $750 in 2017
I own a red tiger Prophecy LP. Not sure what you mean by the "custom" emblem being part of the reason for the upcharge because the regular Prophecies all have that same emblem. The inlays on the regular ones also have real abslone. Aside from the back binding (and subsequent loss of belly cut....which I think is a major downer), this is just a Prophecy LP with Jerry's name and aesthetic and a case. I'm actually disappointed because for me that's not worth the extra money. And people are right when they say this doesn't look like something he'd play. I've seen him play 8x, most recently 2 weeks ago and he didn't play anything that looks like this ( or the Wino for that matter). He played several LPs, but nothing like this. That said, I absolutely love my Prophecy and thought it's totally worth the money, and I couldn't find a single QC issue other than needing a setup.
The way the finish goes along the binding at the lower horn has always made me wonder if it's actually paint, it looks like a cut off sheet of paper or vinyl, been like that for ages.
Since its a poly finish they don't scrape the binding like a lacquer Gibson finish, its taped off before the poly color coat is sprayed. It may be that they have pre-cut adhesive binding masks they use for finishing when the color coat is applied.
I love how much mileage not the sticker bombing of the Rampage but the leftover sticker parts got, in the fullness of time. I mean, a set of stickers without the stickers got to be the inlays.
This is one of the coolest guitars you’ve demonstrated on this channel. Every single tone sounded full, round and powerful and the instrument looks rad. There are absolutely no compromises with this guitar. And the price actually is a great deal. I’d buy this instead of a Gibson.
The intonation on this guitar sounds pretty darn good. Those fishman pickups are also kinda a cheat code huh? Definitely trying to get a set in one of my next guitars!

For the price I would have expected a little more.
Good video, as detailed as ever, thanks. Anyone else thinking that Gibson - Epiphone's owner - is starting to raise the profile of Epiphone with increasingly more expensive model releases? Perhaps this is so that they can raise Gibson prices while still maintaining the appearance of a nice big gap between the two companies' price points. Effectively, it's a way to disguise Gibson's already-inflated, and still inflating, prices.
I have space for one more guitar and do not want to regret buy, how would you compare this to a Gibson studio? I'm down to getting one but not sure which
Weird so on the fishman fluence pickups i have there is a pin quick connect on the board on the back of them. you can wire it with all those options plus a highpass filter thing
Usually when I buy Les Paul's I have to modernize them like this Les Paul. Obviously I not into old version Les Paul's. I think it's better to have all the modern updates with the same style and sound. If you want old style then buy a old Les Paul.
I would love if you could document the epiphone wino as well, i'm thinking about getting one but none of the reviews so far shows the stuff that i like to see lol
I would say around $150 value for the case but I don’t think that price is out of the question I paid 1k for an epiphone les Paul custom and a nice case so not to far off and this one is nicer
Trogly, I love your videos and the time you take and quality is fantastic…BUT.. when your doing the playing demos, the difference in volume between the guitar and your voice is substantial and I find myself having to adjust the volume all the time. Just food for thought. Keep up the good work.
Are the dimensions of the body of the epiphone prophecy les pauls different to normal les pauls? I can see that the neck is connecting to the body at the 18th fret instead of the 16th fret, and you have 24 frets, and something just looks different on the body but maybe my eyes are just fooling me
The bridge and tail are moved up towards headstock to allow 2 more frets in the same 24 3/4" of scale length. This puts the pickups closer together and effectively moves the neck pup closer to the bridge for a slightly brighter sound.
So before seeing this episode I was originally interested in getting his wino but after watching the versatility this one has I decided this was the one I wanted so I watched it on their website for a few months planning on getting it as a reward for sticking to getting back into playing and improving and that got bumped up once I saw they only had one left 🤣. But thanks to you and all the info you provided I decided to pull the trigger this past Sunday and order it while I could. Can’t wait for it to arrive. Wow Trog, you've done a few platinum white Gibson and Epiphone models over the last 18 months. Are thru a mounting trend among signature editions for some reason? Here's a potentially radical request. How frequently have you reviewed a Rickenbacker 360 or 360/12? Bring it, Trog!
That white Epiphone looks nice, but the sound i just don't like, the Wino sounds good. I wanted that white one but the way it sounds i just can't do it. Jerry Cantrell always played g&l rampage and every video I looked at the rampage sounds awesome vs the white one that doesn't, it's a shame. These days I don't care much to give money to China.
Love the fact that you played a DIO riff 🙂
I was hoping to see that binding under the black light. it's probably normal creme like you said, but it's the contrast that we notice. the brushed hardware is one of the main features that creates the unique look on this one. and using a white nut would require a very white one, so black works better, no yellowing. it's the small details that count. obviously the pickup covers look great but I could live without the Fishman rig underneath. on imports they are selective about where they put the time in, and the routs are not detailed much at all. but it's really something nice.
I’ve seen him play it live
@@andrewbecker3700 Cool amd agreed!
The other Prophecy's are amazing. Satin finish (so neck as well), and the belly cut is awesome. But the fact that this comes with a case makes the price only $100 for a signature. So if I was a big fan, it's worth it. But for playing, the more modern Prophecy's DOMINATE!
Fantastic guitar well explained as always! Way to go my man, way to go!!!
People always forget about the wholesale retail thing regarding prices.
I like it. Clean, and easy on the eyes with the white body and brushed nickel hardware, it all matches well with the inlays and logos.
I was really hoping for the piezo like the Lifeson one. Still looks cool.
Just placed my order for my JC Epi Les Paul. Can't wait to get it in my hands.
please do a comparative video of the wino les pauls epiphone and gibson
Literally got my epiphone wino today! so happy with it!
Actually, ALL of the new customs from the prophecy and the original collection , have the Large diamond inlay on the headstocks. I think the dealers just haven’t changed the stock photos online. All of the Epiphone customs that I have seen in person all have the large split diamond 🤘🏻
Hold up if these pickups are active how can they split coil i thought you couldnt do that ona active pickups
Active pup splitting is better bc it cuts one coil off so it is an actual single coil unlike a tapped or split mode on passives and EMG has been doing this since 1990ish when the 89 came out.
I like the fact that they got rid of those cheap plastic control knobs. I replace all of my knobs with metal knobs.
Bought this with my marshall mg 30 , and thos thing sounds really nice. Sound better than my epiphone 1959
I sound like a broken record...I love Epiphone. The only negative I have for them in the 12 guitars I've purchased since 2020 is.......one has frets that needed a fret file. One. Was leaning towards the Wino with this one, but hmmm......
This white is fine as hell
@@sgt.grinch3299 Preach!
Why do you buy 6 guitars a year?
@@jcout25 I have a bit of a problem lol.
gotta say as a bassist, i think this is a fantasic sounding guitar in all the modes, i dont understand why some guitarists are reluctant to fancy electronics, as you said roll the volume for standard humbucker, up the volume in single coil, max volume for standard active sound
I had 2 Gibson's. Les Paul studio, special. Junk garbage. I traded them in. Bought Epi sg prophecy, and Les Paul prophy. Also bought Epi sg standard .love them absolutely blown away. So I bought the Epi Rosa Corso, zakk Wylde, and I'm gonna have to grab this one two
Don’t care about the rear binding…I WANT THE COMFORT CARVE AND THE ACCESS HEEL!!! BOOOO!!!
I love this instrument. Beautiful color and great pups.
I'm strictly a passive kind of guy.
That said, I can still appreciate everything active pickups offer, and this Epiphone is no exception.
I'm not saying anything negative about the Epiphone instruments, I'm just saying after keeping and playing a single instrument for over 30 years I personally prefer the lacquer finish.
i wish I would have been more picky about my guitars over the years , Troglys is very informative and he is picky , I like that , thanks !!!
Voice 1 is an active sounding pickup, voice 2 is a passive sounding pickup.
My Epiphone Les Paul custom prophecy plus has mother of pearl and abalone whole keyboard and headstock along with quilted heritage cherry sunburst came with hardcase $750 in 2017
Just got my Epiphone extura... Sounds great
I own a red tiger Prophecy LP.
The back switch controls seem like it backs off the output to sound like passive pickups. It may switch between active and passive pickups...
My silverburst custom looks exactly the same. Must be some kind of template they put over the top when they shoot it?
I love how much mileage not the sticker bombing of the Rampage but the leftover sticker parts got, in the fullness of time.
I mean, a set of stickers without the stickers got to be the inlays.
Huh?
What are you talking about?
Looks pretty modern for an old school guy like Jerry
This is one of the coolest guitars you’ve demonstrated on this channel. Every single tone sounded full, round and powerful and the instrument looks rad. There are absolutely no compromises with this guitar. And the price actually is a great deal. I’d buy this instead of a Gibson.
Now if they would go with locking tuners without plastic tuner knob would make this guitar perfect 🥰
I believe this has metal tuner knobs.
It's a beauty for sure.
The intonation on this guitar sounds pretty darn good. Those fishman pickups are also kinda a cheat code huh? Definitely trying to get a set in one of my next guitars!
Is the case a wood ply or plastic? Great demo!
Any chance of reviewing the epiphone sg custom? Definitely interested in your thoughts on that one.
WOULD YOU CHANGE OUT THE PUPS? THANKS
The second voicing is supposed to be a “passive” pickup. The first one is a more traditional active style voicing.
Nice guitar but I'm not paying $1,200 for an epiphone from China we need to quit purchasing guitars from China sell all your Chinese guitars and by American we need to buy American we're in a recession when all the music gear went up amps $200 guitars $200 speaker cabinets $500 love your show everybody needs to quit buying Chinese guitars we're going to be the third world country we need to bring manufacturing back here for everything make America number one again I'm selling my Chinese guitars on reverb if y'all want to buy them now my old korean-japanese guitars are staying because those were made good the China's got to go they gave us the virus they hate us they're taking advantage of us for the last 30 years in manufacturing we need to manufacture everything in the USA
How old are you, Geoff?
@@wesleyAlan9179 LOL
@@wesleyAlan9179 There is a lot to unpack in his comment.
I'll just say "YES".
@@hkguitar1984 😁
...and I wasn't even asking offensively, I really want to know. Plus, who spells Jeff like that?😄
@@wesleyAlan9179 I didn't mean to be so offensive 55 how old I am. Rock on my brother we all just need to get along👍 and make America self efficient again. That's the name my parents gave me like Spicoli would say
DAMN! That is a SWEET looking axe right there now. Digging the hell out of it.
I am an Epiphone lover through and through … I get what he is saying on how spec wise this Is a GREAT guitar. It just seems like they said here is the Matt Heafy model and let’s put a different fretboard on this just plain paper white guitar and call it a day , oh and don’t forget to change the logos. For the price I would have expected a little more.
Now can you review the wino? I am loving all new epiphone LP. Looking forward to the Heafy models and the Adam Jones too.
Best Epi . Hands down is the Johnny A guitar!
Can't argue with you, Gibson or Epiphone the Johnny A guitars are beautiful.
I have space for one more guitar and do not want to regret buy, how would you compare this to a Gibson studio? I'm down to getting one but not sure which
Why is the bridge so close to the pickup
How about if you compare it with the new matt Heafy one?
Does this stay in tune better than a Gibson? Less of a Headstock Angle?
Weird so on the fishman fluence pickups i have there is a pin quick connect on the board on the back of them. you can wire it with all those options plus a highpass filter thing
It's because they are exclusive fluence pickups made for Epiphone.
which one guitar is worth the money....alex lifeson or the Jerry Cantrell epiphones?
I use loudness equalisation on my pc to offset it, would be nice if I didn't have to though
I always leave before the playing demo
They always sounds out of tune
Will you be doing a review of the Slash Epiphone models? Also great video, as always!
So fresh and so clean!
When this was opened up did you notice if it has a veneer or and actual maple cap? The Wino version was confirmed as a two piece maple cap.
Those fret markers are from the design on his g&l back in the day.
Troglio the guitario!!
why would you need to turn the volume down ? that's why you have 2 other voicings...
I’m not a die hard Alice In Chains fan, I love their music but can’t say I own every cd but I do have Jerry’s auto on a dirt cd.
Nice looking guitar though.
Tuck that blue ribbon back in there...killin' me!
Bugged me too! Remind me of a case ribbon sticking out of a case.
I think they are custom Jerry Fishman pickups
Just bought Flying V Prophecy and i love it, actually i tried the SGs and they were horrible, i dont know why but i tried 2 of them and they sounded way worse than the V and the Les Pauls.
Does anyone know if the neck carve and depth on the Epi "wino" is the same as the this Prophecy?
