      The Korina Stratocasters are indeed rare, I believe less than 6 were produced.
      The 1941 L-5 Clear was built to showcase Gibson's then brand new guitar pickup, amazing for sure.

    The clear L5 might a "demonstrator" model like they do with fountain pens. You make it out of a clear material so you can see inside, which is probably why the pickup has a clear cover on it as well. Maybe it was displayed at trade shows, etc.

      it also could be a navy guitar, i remember a story about how the US navy used to have aluminium double basses because the soundchambers would develop rot due to the salty water.
      perhaps gibson tried to prevent it by using lucite for the body?

    The Gibson F5 Lloyd Loar mandolins do sell for crazy money. They can go for 175,000 to 200,000 with the peak price for a really nice one being 225,000. Even modernly made "low end' Gibson F9 sells for around the 5,000 mark.

    • @hkguitar1984

      A couple years back my Son and I were shopping at Elderly Music when my Son grabbed a beat up vintage Mandolin off the wall and gave it a couple quick strums. I turned to look and listen when he finally got a look at the price tag........it was a 1936 Gibson F10, he carefully hung it back in its place. Price tag was $15,000!
      I will say this, it did sound great!
      I took the time to closely inspect the headstock binding curlicue, just amazing how much effort must go into crafting such a piece.
      Its my understanding the original purpose of the headstock curlicue was to easily facilitate a string-loop strap for playing!

    Jay and the peeps at Emerald City Guitars are only three blocks away from me here in Seattle. G has been a friend for almost 20 years. His shop is dangerous though, to your pocketbook. Sadly I’ve had to sell off some of my guitars as I’m waiting for a liver transplant. He offered to put up the go fund me poster in the shop to help raise money to keep me from being homeless while I’m waiting on disability. I’ve been bedridden for a couple of months but look fwd to your videos whenever you post. I love the crazy firebird you had up last week. That would be a joy to play something that cool when I recover.

      Gonna say Prayers for you Mark.
      My Wife and I are all to well aware of how painfully long S.S. Disability takes to be approved.
      Nothing I could say here will help or make you feel better other than we will keep you in our Prayers.
      I watch all the Emerald City Videos, they had that Cardinal Red Firebird Austin mentioned, it was from the Collection of Brian Ray.
      As far as selling off any of your instruments, we all do what we have to do and it may just be that is why you had them in the first place, to help out here and now. Once you're back on your feet you can take a stroll and visit Emerald City. BTW, how nice to actually have such a nice brick and mortar Music Store so close, not everything has to be done on-line these days.
      Be Well Sir

      @@hkguitar1984 thank you. Funny story. When jay 1st opened emerald city he joked I was his 1st customer as my old roadie called me from his parents place in Batavia ny. He wanted to know if I wanted his grandmother’s guitar or whether they should throw it away. No one in the family played so they had no idea what it was. Only that it was in an alligator case and grandma was a guitar player of some renown. We made a deal that if i picked him up at the airport the guitar was mine. He flew back a couple days w a 64 Gibson j150 in original case in need of a minor set up. I told him that it was a valuable guitar and I felt bad about taking it off of him. And he explained that dude sold two guitars that she played as well at a garage sale a few years ago, this was 1996, it sounded awfully like a 335 and a Les Paul. The family sold each one for $20 each. Jay set it up and offered me cash for it, which I wouldn’t except as it was a present from of good friend. I still have that guitar and I’ve written more songs on it than any other guitar I’ve owned. That one isn’t going anywhere!

    Bruh what boggles my mind is the outrageous prices of Les Paul Studio guitars recently on reverb and eBay like WTF why? Not even in mint condition most of them are fair condition selling over $1000? Not even ebony fretboards not even premium versions. It’s incredible can’t buy nothing from any of my hobbies right now, no PC parts bc people are scalping, no retro games because people are scalping, now can’t even buy cheap ass guitars that used to be found around $700 not long ago bc they are being inflated for what reason? I bet if I buy one I’m going to go to a luthier and spend more money on top, Damn.

    A Lloyd Loar built mandolin is like a having a Stradivarius violin. Bluegrass music was invented on a unique mandolin design by Lloyd Loar and built by him at Gibson. The F5 is the archetype of modern mandolins sounds. He only built mandolins for Gibson for a few years.

    The guitars in the Italian shop - the Strat Pro II and the Morello - have suffered the curse of the European comma. They use a comma between the Euro and the cents, so 1799,00 which gets translated in currency conversion as 179,900!

    If you get into the jazz boxes, look at the history of D’Angelico, the originals made by John D’Angelico and his apprentices from the 1930s-1950s are probably THE standard for archtop jazz guitars. (Norman’s Rare Guitars just got an Excel from 1937… if I only had the money.)

      Right. A 90s or 00s equivalent would be a carbon fiber guitar, or a 3D-printed guitar. Even if it's not enjoyable to play or listen to it'd still be a conversation piece and something of a milestone.

      Also note Ovation has used plastic backs forever, and they've had models with glass-reinforced-plastic (i.e., fiberglass) tops that were sold as deluxe models. Personally something about Ovations to my ear sounds like they have old strings. I wouldn't want one, but others seem to.

    The 1941 L-5 in clear Lucite was most likely a trade show model to show off Gibsons' internal bracing technology. Obviously, given the age of it, the plastics will get darker. I believe Lucite was used to make canopy glass for WW2 fighters and bombers.

    I don't even have the heart to tell you what I would do to find a 1999-2000 Gibson Gothic Explorer. My parents got me one used back in the day (which they couldn't afford) because they loved and believed in their son and were amazing. Me being a stupid kid, I didn't know nor appreciate what I had. Long(er) story short I don't have it anymore and it breaks my heart that I (surely) disappointed them all those years ago. I lost them both within the last few years and it is my life's goal to get another one. I honestly do not even know why I am going into all this here. Just watching Trogly's kinda brought the feelings up again (which is good..don't get me wrong). So I guess I am saying thank you Austin, for the stories, the guitars, and the show. Means a lot to me and I am sure many others. More then just watching entertaining guitar vids, your passion comes through and is quite contagious. I had not touched a guitar in MANY years (LONG story) and since finding your channel I got back into it. I have slowly been building back up and am pretty shocked how quickly I remember. I am even trying to teach my son.

    Regarding that ‘84 archtop… “Gary Josey of Richmond, Va., a guitar collector who convinced Deurloo to build one last 'Citation' jazz guitar for him at the Kalamazoo plant. At $7,000, Josey says it is truly a bargain.
    'This guitar is the flagship of the Gibson line, no dealer will ever stock it, they're not easy to get,' Josey said. 'Once you get to know the people and hang around this place for a while, there's a pleasure to owning an instrument of that caliber.'”

    I think the reason you are seeing a lot of these inflated prices is the fact its getting really difficult to buy guitars now. Most places are out of stock and the places that did hold back brand new guitars can pretty much write their own ticket now.

  • @lqr824

    14:21 I don't think they "want" to go for a "plain looking top," per se, but the L-6, Super 400, and Citation etc. are acoustic instruments, and the top is meant to move air. So, it's spruce, just as on nearly all flat-top acoustics. And spruce doesn't have flames, curls, birdseye, etc., that I know of. The ES-275 etc. and of course the ES-335 etc. range's top was NOT acoustic so could instead be a sturdier and less feedback-prone plywood, and the outer layer of that plywood could be a flame maple. Google "Gibson 275 flame" and check images for some awesome-looking instruments.

    Welcome to another edition of People With More Money Than Sense! 🤦‍♂️
    It boggles my mind why someone would pay that for an Explorer, creating an investment market out of nothing seems so far removed from the initial point of the instrument’s existence to me, I kind of feel sorry for it!

    • @glynnpowell7864
      @glynnpowell7864 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just start a stock account and you’ll have distorted views on money faster than you can spit! You’d be surprised how you’d act with extra cash and all your needs met. Giving your friends and family money doesn’t last long either. That gets weird too, fast. I used to say the same thing and now I just think it’s a strange world and money is a strange concept.

    • @jimherleva4541
      @jimherleva4541 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      People like Collecting stuff and people don’t see those collections as having no sense.
      Secondly, “investing” - no matter how unpalatable it might be to you - isn’t the action of someone with no sense.
      Somebody with no sense bitches about stuff they don’t understand or like by evoking some traditionalist value to lend it more credence. When in actuality, you just don’t like other People having things you can’t have.
      Why not focus on the things you like, instead of focussing on the things others like that you don’t? That would make more “sense” don’t you think?

    • @graybronze
      @graybronze 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jimherleva4541 Cool man, I mean you've spectacularly missed the point of what I was trying to say as well as making sweeping assumptions based on your own self inflated interpretation. Maybe I'll explain it in simpler terms for you, seeing as how being condescending appears to be your preferred method of commentary.
      To me the literal point of a guitar's creation is to play it and enjoy it because of that process, a 'traditionalist' in your terms. Fair enough if you want to collect them, I get it and also do it myself, I never even made mention of that. What I don't get is Gibson purposely manufacturing exclusivity with seemingly the only goal of creating an inflated and artificial investment market, rather than an instrument of musical expression. Not even counting the fact that in direct terms the guitars themselves are simply not worth that much on any level. Trogly himself even alludes to this at the start of the video, given that the Explorer in question is not a 1950's artefact like the others listed, but a recently manufactured and deliberate cash in. The obvious point here is they do it because somebody, somewhere will buy them and therefore perpetuate the cycle, after all there's a sucker born every minute. The fact you assert that every investment is an action made through pure sense and therefore a good one puts you squarely in that category.
      Instead of focusing on what you think people are trying to say and creating blind assertions that fit your narrative, why don't you try actually engaging your brain, does that make enough "sense" to you?

    • @hkguitar1984

      Agreed, at that point its like slowly spraying acetone on the instrument. Something like that you could send to Gibson Repair and Restoration and have them make a replacement from modern materials. Then place the original celluloid pieces in zip-lock bags and in a case all their own.
      The celluloid pickgaurd on Austin's Firebird looks to just have red lacquer over it. Take it off and get it away from the rest of the guitar A.S.A.P.

    I think some of those prices are due to people not checking what currency they’re inputting. If you’re in Japan, India or Russia, 160000 doesn’t seem like a massive amount of money, because the yen, rupee, rubel etc aren’t worth nearly as much as the dollar, pound, euro etc. That and people missing out decimals I think are the cause for the vast majority of the extremely wacky prices
