You could put hold downs on the trailer for the Aluminum Boxes. Then have boxes loaded for different type work. i.e. wood, metal and measurement boxes. Load the trailer with the boxes you need.

They must be the standard 40*60 cm, made to fit the euro-pallet at 2x2. The cargo bike reflects that. It can't be easily made to fit the whole 80cm wide pallet, though, because 80cm is also some legal limit + it fits most doors.

On the trolley, you definitely need a miniature air compressor. While it does require power, it can do so much, from inflating tires to driving a nail gun. Also, the saw could be set-up like an old sewing machine. Open the top which becomes the out-feed table, raise the blade and go. And maybe have some side-mounted removable tool boxes where you could select to put either mechanical tools or wood working tools. And maybe add a "party in a box" option 😁

I think the aluminum box concept is going to be cool. The basic set of tools is always there. You can swap out a box of wood working tools for a box of mechanical items. You might consider the layout so that you can use part of the set up as a bench or workplace.

This has serious potential, Laura! If you design everything around the boxes, make them work as shelfs/drawers, you can have a working surface on top and then you just need to adapt the tools that you want/need to those boxes, making them interchangeable. I started out thinking it was going to be a cool, but not useful, gadget, but now I’m sold! Duuuude!!

  • @rmarcelo80
    @rmarcelo80 ปีที่แล้ว +19

Excuse me, Laura, I see two problems, 1) it's the rain, having a mobile workshop without a roof makes you look susceptible to the fact that when it rains the tools get wet and rust, 2) it's theft or loss of tools, the movement of the trailer could cause some items to drop or be lost, and can be easily extracted at some stoplight. I think that while it sounds like an interesting idea, you might have to think of the worst case scenario to make something useful to you that doesn't get lost or stolen.

As you were talking about the table saw, I looked over at my sewing machine cabinet and thought of a folding top that could extend work surface for larger boards. Then you went there and I smiled big. Then you took it to a butterfly top and I squee'd (a 58 year old man squeeing is one of the most joyful sounds ever!). I have no clue how it's going to look when it's finished, but I know it will be beautiful and very functional. Thanks for the fun and exciting continuing saga!

What a great idea.! I've had an ebike for a few years now, and I've never thought of using it this way.
If you bring any power tools that need plugs, you may want to consider adding a small gas generator like a Yamaha 2600C to power them. Battery powered tools are wonderful until the battery dies, and you don't have a way to recharge them.

So: slide on/slide off modular decks with different fittings for various containers to lock to (Tannos) or fit between (Aluminium boxes) or complete setups such as a mini-bar with a cooler and an optional BBQ. Some tubes/sockets at the corners so you can put plastic pipe risers in to support a fabric roof if its too sunny or rainy (Medieval market booth). Definitely the 'butterfly' hinged top deck to keep everything in the boxes from bouncing out, and put a lock on it so no one can 'help themselves' to the contents without a key. You can hinge 2-4 swing out triangular supports to the trailer for when the deck is unfolded.

What an awesome concept! Many awesome concepts, actually. The bike trailer, the mobile workshop, the suitcase battery... all very cool. My main suggestion for stuff to bring is a first-aid/emergency roadside kit. I also recommend a loading ramp, a horn that can go either "meep meep" or play "Ride of the Valkyries," and a little sign on the back that says "If you can read this, you're too close to me." Also, a gladius to hold when you ride in it, just to complete the post-apocalyptic doom chariot look.

I'm in the states, Florida. In my area, contractors & handyman services, most have enclosed trailers they bring to jobs with tools of their trade. They can have what they need on site, extra screws, nails, etc. Everything is enclosed so protected from the weather, theft, don't have to unpack and reload each day, just restock as necessary. They have shelves, racks on both sides and usually keep the middle open for hauling larger materials. Some are pretty darn cool the way they're set up.

Using your aluminum boxes, you might be able to make some portions of this modular. In other words, certain items could be swapped out/in depending on the job. You keep some core tools on it all the time, then add a module for extended woodworking or metalworking or electrical tools. Maybe a container for extra battery power in case you are not near outlets. Maybe you could make a mini DJ unit with speakers and lights built in? Maybe a portable grill? Geez now you got me excited too! 🙂. OK I just looked at the other comments and see most of my ideas already in there. Looks like we are all excited to see what you do with this!

Hi Laura, what a great piece of gear. When thinking about your top I thought of a side and lid combined. It would be hinged along a side so you have a bench. If you want more flip the whole side and top out on the other side. You would have a huge work top and when locked it locks down. The larger work surface would need legs too. Then there is weight, Aluminium framing may help there. Your Aluminium crates were such a great find and you will be creating all sorts of things from them. I enjoy your enthusiasm and humour. Keep up the great work.

Such a beautiful trailer! Please be mindful of vibrations and water/dust that will impact your tools and metal much more/differently than in your workshop. Especially vibrations impacting electronics. Lastly, get a solid set of different length/hook bungees. You can never have enough bungees!

Great idea! I would keep it modular. The first Module should hold your basic tool set. The second one for e.g. metal works, the third for constructive wood works and so on. Don't forget a module for coffee station, cool drinks and bbq. Systainer drawers! And storage for long material.
    Endless possibilities...

I think the most important thing, beyond the tools for the mobile workshop, would be a source of power to those tools. Maybe a battery case with a mobile solar panel, or something like that. I'll keep watching to see the developments. Thanks for sharing those experiences.

Cool trailer!! Make your fold out top supports attach to the trailer. Hauling large flat things would be easy!! Put a two piece "cage" on top when everything is folded up. Use the cage for loose items and for securing the contents below.....when you are in public! Good luck!!!

I don't have the kind of workshop and hobbies you have, but what I would pick based on the things I have found myself needing over the years for like, routine stuff at home:
    1. tools for measuring - measuring tape, ruler/straight-edge, protractor/angle transfer tool, etc.
    2. tools for cutting - wood saw, metal saw, electric saw, angle grinder
    3. tools for making holes - drill with bits (wood, metal, masonry, and step drill bits)
    4. tools for (dis)assembling - screwdrivers, wrenches
    5. tools for joining - hammers, welder, soldering iron
    6. consumables - screws, nails, bolts and washers, metal stock, wood stock, pipes, cables, sockets, plugs, lamps, bulbs
