    Nice! I think you’re going to find a longer barrel AR’s becoming more and more popular again. So many of us have had a chance to experiment with barrels below 16 inches thanks to the ATF’s “pistol configuration“ AR definition, and yeah they are cool, but to get the most out of the cartridge you really need a longer barrel... also it’s a good excuse to buy another gun!

      Honestly I believe 16 inch is the sweet spot for 5.56 you get penetration velocity range and is still easily usable for CQB

      @@TheMeltone1 yeah I know that’s why I said personal preference I feel using a 18-20 inch barrel breaching a room is just not ideal also factor in the weight…if I’m going to run a something of that length and weight then im grabbing my battle rifle (FAL) but to each their own plenty of soldiers have breached rooms with mk12’s so it can be done I’d just prefer the in between option in case I still wanna reach out and touch something or do some cqb👍🏼

    Colt is def listening this time around, they changed the carbine marking with ar15A4, and it’s got the colt and horse marking, laser engraving of course, thanks for the review!!

    Unpopular opinion, yeah Colt has quality control issues here and there, but my Government Model I bought a few years ago runs like a top and I got it for an excellent price. I also handled one of their basic m4 carbines and it was stupid simple, but felt tightly made rock solid. Was only around 900 bucks which was a good price in our current environment.

      You can build an AR for less than $700
      Get an Anderson lower and a PSA upper. Done.

    I have a bit of a mutt rifle in this configuration (flat top with a detachable carry handle and 20" barrel) and honestly its a blast to shoot, I love how little it recoils and how accurate it is.

      Yeah I just can't do that, that's too much. I thought about swapping my Aero builds to an A4 and M4 but not like this.

      @@MiGallagher remember the "Alteration to the firearm is unsafe and illegal" on the old Clayco AK dust cover wasn't well received but without that silly markings on a Clayco now will consider as a incomplete example.

    I just got mine. And it took me back to basic at MCRD! Shot 4 mags through it. Had no problems. I was hitting the gong at 75 yards open sights. The plate it self was ten inches in radius. The rifle is accurate. Went to 100 yards me and my son were hitting the gong. Good rifle. Your just paying for the name. But overall good rifle.

      With some marksmanship applied I find I can hit the Military SR-1 target at 100 yards with bullets staying inside the 3 inch 10-Ring shooting American Eagle 55 grain .223 Ammunition. This is far from Match Grade Accuracy but seems good enough to hit an E-Type target to 500 or even 600 yards having a little skill in sight alignment and trigger control from a solid position along with some knowledge about favoring for wind.

    I agree. This video sums up the point. You buy it has a shooter because few manufacturers are producing A4 rifle builds. The other alternative is assembling your own rifle build.

      CZ has never produced a semi-auto VZ58. In fact, all the rights to that firearm were transfered to D-Technique roughly 25 years ago.

    There's a marked difference in report between 16 and 20" barrels. When we sighted in my nephew's new Bushmaster (his first gun), I brought along my SP1. We both were surprised at the difference! The SP1 barked with a much lower frequency and louder report. My nephew and sister are also fans of the old beavertail forearm of the SP1. Hope they'll keep the retro parts available. Also, they should ship the old silent sling with every rifle the way they used to.

      @@jamesmerone because two reasons. #1 this is a 20 inch rifle not a carbine. #2 even when these same receiver markings are used on the 16 inch or the 14.5 inch barrel markings, people like to see the “M4” or “AR-15” markings as they are more collectible and desirable.

    Great review as always. I think new Colt A4's are still solid, quality made rifles. I'd really like to see anything but "carbine" stamped on the reciever. It's literally not a carbine. Even then, I still like this rifle a lot. Simple, reliable, proven and classic.

      I have the Colt AR-15A4 stamped on mine. Don’t like what I see now. I use a return to zero Larue mount. When my ACOG A4CP is off, I just put on my carry handle. No need for the Matech sight. Gotta move the ACOG all the way to rear with A2 fix stock.

    It's good that Colt changed the laser engraving from "Carbine" to "AR15A4."
    It's just a little detail that means nothing at the end of the day. But I think Colt should've held off on the production run until they had appropriately marked lowers.

    I built my m16a4 clone back in 2019 with some more budget parts for probably $700-$800. I've got a mil-spec trigger and m16a4 marked lower but the most expensive part on that rifle is the KAC quad rail. It's been super reliable and hasn't been cleaned in I can't even remember how long.     Picked one up today and the "AR15A4" mark is back on the lower instead of "Carbine". It looks like an electric engraving vs the old roll mark, but still, they must be listening to customer feedback. The serial number prefix is back to "CAR" as well. I probably wouldn't even have noticed, not that OCD, had I not watched this video while waiting for my rifle to arrive.

      My recently bought A4 has the older markings too but are laser engraved. Bought it just shy of a month ago. Hopefully colt will start marking their M4’s similarly to how they used too

      Yeah I have seen some recently with the markings,I guess they actually listened to what people want vs saving a few minutes changing the laser machine settings. Definitely a smart move as we Colt fans are a picky group. They lost a lot of sales years ago putting the Sporter marking on the lower.

      I think it’s kinda cool there are colts out there now that just have “carbine” on the receiver seeing how they are no longer doing that and went back to the original M4 marked receiver.

      ​@rickhunter6513 I have a Colt EPR marked with just carbine. It looked a little tacky/cheesy at first, but I kinda like it. My rifle is marked AR15A4 and is very reminiscent of my time in the Corps. I like the A2 look and might keep it that way until my KAC rail and A4 ACOG come in for it.

    Great video !!I love my Colt AR-15 A4 I bought it back in 2014 it's one of my favorite rifles to shoot. I prefer the older Colt rifles. My car is a colt. A3 tactical carbine 1997. It's a very accurate .

      My LE6320 seen in the followup video is from around the same time period as yours. I agree, the fit & finish are both nice and it is just a very solid little gun. Definitely built back when poneys were true Colts.

    I appreciate the historical information you give in this video; I’m a longtime shooter but totally new to AR’s. Dec. 2022, just bought a new in box 20”bbl Colt AR-15A4 - that’s all it says, no “Carbine” engraving - so maybe they’ve stopped doing that. Serial no. is also CARxxxxxx, not CR. QR code is there - so I can’t quite pretend it’s a rifle from the 1960’s.

    I like to get your thoughts on the Colt AR-15A4 that are missed marked with 1/9 barrel. But it’s really a 1/7. Any collective attributes with this as it’s a factory mess up? Thank always enjoy your firearms knowledge.

      I have one of those. It also is stamped HBAR on the barrel which they have not made in a long time. I heard that it was a factory mess up and that Colt thinks there are only about 30 of them. I have no idea how much they are worth. There are probably some avid Colt collectors out there that would like to get there hands on one.

    another thing worth noting is the new lower markings allow it to be sold in California, as the name "AR15-A4" was banned by name as CR whatever is not

    So does the dot matrix cage code mean its made by Colt? or does it mean it was outsourced to someone else and Colt just put their cage code on it. If its roll marked on is there a difference? Trying to do a clone.

    I have one from windham weaponry and it’s my favorite ar. I’m not much into ar’s so when I get one I like carry handles and clam shells on them

    Got one 2 years ago. Shoots great. Never had a problem. For $1000 idk if you ll find a better deal complete. Now I love my Aero Precision builds.... but this is one of my favorites

    Long live the 20" a4 rifles!! I'm not a big fan of how these lowers are marked carbine though, if you are going for the Colt you should be getting the proper ar-15 a4 rifle marking, or at the very least have it just say rifle instead of carbine. Glad to see companies still putting out 20" guns!

      I use a Colt AR15-A4 marked lower on my M16A2 build. The '4' rather than '2' does bug me slightly but oh well.

    I just picked up one of these today from my LGS that had just came in.. but it was marked AR15A4 on the lower, not CARBINE like this one. I like the rifle, it feels great... i don't like the ambi safety though so i will get rid of that... hoping to take it out shooting tommorow!

    My new A4 has a "CAR" serial # prefix with a QR code. But no "Carbine" laser engraving on the mag well.

      Keep your eyes open for a contract overrun new FN upper. I snagged one for $450 with a KAC rail a couple years ago. I think they are going for more money now but they are out there.

      ​@@MiGallagher Ohio Ordnance Works was having a sale at the time. Looks like their last batch of uppers sold for $750 a pop. Still worth it though. Its my favorite AR upper and Ill eventually get a correct lower and ACOG for it.

    I’m hoping my “Carbine” marked AR-15 A4 will be a collectors item someday as a goofy Colt variation, really the gun itself is nicely made.

      I don’t see it being a collector item one because it’s under new owner two laser engravings are easy to get done roll marks are a lot harder to make look clean and three they aren’t under the military contract anymore which I feel is a huge depreciation in the value…also most colt collectors want the LE series or before

      No plans at this time. Bushmasters are fine but hold only minor interest for me. There are so many AR15 clones & copies out there, and truth is many are the same gun, just with different names on the sides.

    Can you buy the lower,I’ve been trying to get that stock but only seen the hollow shell of the stock available. Does anyone know where I can get a complete stock? Thanks.

      Only lowers I've seen from Colt are carbine ones. And even those are very difficult to find. Fun fact, spare lowers like those were the first ones to have 'CR' prefix serials. According to Chris, Colt has used this for replacement lowers for a long time. I've never seen an A4 lower w/ fixed stock for sale by itself from Colt. I did used to sell the stocks on GB, because for a time i was taking AR15-A4s apart and selling them bit by bit to help out builders. Plus hey, got more money that way too hehe.

    I’d think that with CZ’s history of innovation, technology, and resources coupled with Colt having much less worry about its financial future should equal the best guns Colt has made since they went down hill and possibly the best they’ve ever made once the worker get honed. Be cool if Colt Competition was resurrected.

      I got mine yesterday as well. Brand new production. Was happy to see the Pony, Colt logo, AR-15A4 just like his older one in the vid. CAR serial number. Selector stops are present. I'm happy.

    The problem with Colt until CZ intervention has been management that does not understand its civilian market. I think CZ will get it right, perhaps beginning with a re-write of the Operator’s Manual, which has very poor instruction regarding adjustment of the detachable carry handle sight.

    They need to get rid of the auto sear block out of the lower receiver. Hardly anyone does that on their lowers.

      Now that they are no longer machining the stops off, I hope their next step is to delete the 'web' from the receiver. That said, it takes 10 minutes to mill it out yourself since well, alloy; not steel.

      I have a couple of requests:
      . A video or at least a blog post about AR's that are built well enough to be "military grade", as you said in your video about the CAR 816A2 that the number of military-grade AR manufacturers can be counted on a single hand.
      . A review of the Wolf A1 T91 upper receiver.
      Also, which rifle do you think has the best external gas piston? I feel that it may be the Caracal 816, though the T91's is pretty simple.

      @@SayNoToDemocide1 Wolf did a good job with the A1 upper, but the best out there today IMO is from T91Tactical. Their T91 upper is dead-on milspec and a blast to shoot too. We covered it some early in the summer and I am very sure it'll come out again this Fall.

    Misha, thank you for this video. I am the owner of 3 factory Colts and 2 vintage Colt uppers on aftermarket lowers.
    My newest Colt is a CR6920. I jumped on it when I found one available locally. Over the past year and a half when I looked in my local shops most of the Ar's are all optics ready flat top guns with mlok or keymod monolithic handguards.
    Anymore I must be one of the oddball buyers, I want a front fixed sight and military handguards or magpul handguards at most.

    I noticed that you have a 91k serial number range A4 with the selector nubs left on. I have a 60k serial number range with the nubs machined off. Everything else seems to be the same as yours. Oh, and my hammer is hooked on the front and marked "s S".

    Thanks for a nice video on Colt's new-production musket. I've seen one of the new carbines, and to me, the laser engraving just seems cheap compared to roll marks. My S&W Sport II has roll marks on the left side of the mag well, and I think it looks classy--the M&P logo on the other side is hideous, and I painted it over.

      S&W doesn't even come with a proper M16 BCG for proper lock-time. Nor a proper military spec 4150 CMV steel chrome lined barrel.

      @@echodelta2172 You do realize the S&W used non chrome lined 4140 steel. Talk about a company still stuck in 2008. Civie spec trash barrels that won't last 5,000 rounds before they cause key holing.

      @@railfanningpoints2.045 civie spec barrels can be better or worse than a mil-spec one... mil-spec just means it fits the military standards, and sometimes their standards aren't at the peak of performance

      The example featured here has a triangle front handguard retainer. If by "retro" you mean triangular handguards? Then, yes.

    By all means get the FN FN-15. It’s better in all manner than the Colt. Mine groups in the MOA arena which makes it well suited for US Service Competition, by merely adding a float tube.

      @Random Pickle Yeah, the majority of gun laws, regulations, restrictions, and silly rules have come down from the Federal gov't. 922(r), the recent Russian ammo ban, the bumpstock ban, the 1968 GCA, and of course the granddady of them all; the NFA from 1934.

      If those rifles stay around 900 bucks in my area, I'm going to buy one. I've handled one, and they are no frills basic as all hell, but tightly put together and just feel rock solid.

    People hated the Sporter marking on the lowers years ago and it did effect sales. The Carbine marking is a mistake in my opinion. I have seen quite a few new ones marked Ar-15A4 ,so maybe they corrected their mistake. They should put M4 at least on the new carbine as it is what the people want.

    I have a roll marked AR-15 A4. I don’t care if Colt laser engraves, they really need to mark the lowers as before. I cannot stand seeing it just say carbine.

    Interesting that yours is marked “carbine.” I just picked up a new A4 and it’s marked “AR15-A4.” Very similar to my A4 I bought back in 2015

      Should be exactly the same except for the marks on the new AR15A4’s are laser engraved vs rolled on the older. They marked them “carbine” for just a couple months.
