- On a rainy afternoon, Misha throws the Colt AR15-A4 on the table to record a definitive video about a favorite rifle. He recounts the military history/service of the original M16A4, talks about features, and covers some of the AR15-A4 variations seen over the years. Then the Colt is taken on another range trip, where it is shot side-by-side with Jay's PSA A4 style rifle. Mostly this was done to test for reliability with a couple different ammo types. Finally, Misha ends with a personal story about the SP1 and a few other reasons why the A4 is a favorite still today.

In 1984 I went in to the local sporting goods store and there were two SP1 Colts on display. One a rifle like yours and a carbine with a collapsible two position aluminum stock, no forward assist, shell deflector or mag release button guard. I knew the rifle would be more practical, but the CAR looked so cool to me. I put the CAR on layaway, and about 3 months later was mine. The AR-15 was a rare item then. So many memories of family and friends, that I will never see again, shooting my little Colt. I will never part with it.

Gosh what I would do to be in a store in 1984 and have that choice to buy one of those iconic rifles new. I was born in 1984 haha. I was able to purchase a Colt SP1 and a CAR 15 “lookalike” this year. I’m content so far.
Fun fact: Some units in the Army were way behind on upgrades. I was issued and deployed to Afghanistan with an M16A2 back in 2017. My unit didn't upgrade until last year and I didn't fire an M4A1 until my last couple months in the Army.

I have both of the FN version of M16 A4 and M4 ,They did a great job. Just like the one I carried professionally. I like your, videos and drop in often.
Well, that is due in part to the fact that FN actually owns a large portion of the current M16 and M4 military contracts.
Years ago, we reviewed the FN Military Collectors series ARs.
I just got mine ordered today and I'm really exited. In 2014 about 6 months after I quit drinking and acting a fool the way a younger man tends to do, My father bought me a Bushmaster XM-15 patrolman A3. I had shot it completely out by late 2016 and it now has a surplus Remington Socom profile CL/CHF 1:7 barrel and M4 contract upper/Aimpoint making it more legit and it's very sentimental to me. I call it the "contractor" clone. lol. Today I ordered my Colt AR15-A4 from my local FFL and this month(May 2024) means I've been sober 10 years and have stayed true to myself and kept my promise to God. I'm buying this as a gift to reward myself and it means a lot to me. I may have started with the snake on my AR- but I think I have earned that pony. After all, if we don't love ourselves at least a little who else is gonna? Lol. Thank's for all you do for us Misha......all the info and all the time you put in.

I carried the A2 in Iraq in 2003. I could of gotten an M4 but chose the A2 over it. I loved that fucking rifle!
I have the FNM16A4 and the colt M4A1 as well as Daniels defense carbine length. I also have a premium CHF FN barreled M4 clone which in all honesty has been equally as reliable with considerably more rounds and less maintenance. I’m thinking based on my experience PSA has figured out how to bulid a working rifle. I would not hesitate to buy anything from PSA.

It must be strange minus the visual part of loving and shooting firearms. I wonder if the visual part of shooting can be regained via a laser and sound. For example, a laser attached to the firearm, and sighted along the bore. When you bring the rifle around towards the target, you hear a tone, and the tone gets high and higher until the rifle is pointed directly where the round will hit the bullseye. Kind of like our own visual cues, but with sound. That will be pretty awesome shooting groups like that. Probably would get a million views too..
I just bought a brand new Colt Ar15a4 , with the thanks and influence from your excellent quality Colt Ar15a4 videos . Please let Colt know this, I'll give you the serial # if you need it, maybe they will give you credit towards your next Colt product purchase. :)
Those fake ACOGs were later sold and branded by Terminus Optics (but they no longer sell them). They are actually really good knock offs. They use a real prism design (like a real ACOG it's a durable and shock resistant design; I saw one torture tested on a 12 gauge shotgun on youtube). The body is aluminum and it's nitrogen purged. They have an etched reticule and sold them in red, green, and Amber. I got a red Chevron reticule for my M4 clone and a green for my Ruger 10/22. They are the same size as the TA31 so they even work with an authentic Trijicon killflash! Best ACOG clones for the money (about $80). The glass is not as nice as my real ACOG and is especially noticable in low light such as dusk. And these will work in rain but do not blast them with the garden hose or water can get inside. Don't ask me how I know...

They switched to safe...CAT! Also side note I was issued a M16A3 when I was deployed in 2006 to Iraq in the Navy Seabees. The Marines were jealous that we had full auto and they didn`t.
There was a Marine PIP for the a4 to a5. The a5 was a rifle with sliding stock but longer carbine type receiver extension for enhanced reliability over a traditional carbine type receiver extension. Vltor makes the receiver extension.
Just wondering for clarity, did you mean to say that military testing showed M16s jamming only one-third as often as the M4 (as in, goes two-thirds more rounds between stoppages), or that the M16 was going one-third more rounds than the M4 before a stoppage? In an Army test from around 2009 they stated that the M4A1 was going somewhere around 3600 rounds between stoppages. That would turn out to about two-thirds as reliable as the M16A4 when compared to the Marines' testing showing the A4 going about 5000 rounds between stoppages. Great video, especially showing how Colts are less picky about ammo than some more budget-priced brands. I've always been partial to the rifle length ARs myself.
I just picked up a 2022 Colt AR15A4 and LE6920SOCOM. They’re damn nice.
My BCM 20" A4 build has a tiny bit of an issue with Wolf cycling only when it is less than 30°F outside. It will occasionally stop just short of chambering the next round and a whack to stock gets the bullet tip to clear the ramp and chamber. But yeah nothing like Jay's issue.

Nicely done. I don’t have a bipod on mine. I also have a M4 and a MK18. The HK stuff is next. The M4 is a $600 Colt.
Now, PSA are less than $200 difference between the colt? Do you think it is worth paying a $200 difference to get a Colt over a PSA?
Colt probably if they’re at that point I have a PSA 20 inch with the FN barrel and I love it couple thousand rounds through it no issues with the barrel or accuracy But idk if they’re 200 less just get a colt .
Have Colt AR-15As, I really did not care about the M4 feed ramps. Just wanted Colts.
Bought my PSA M16A4 clone from Small Arms Solutions (the one he reviews).
Dropped an ALG ACT trigger in it and MOE Magpul grip and love shooting it!

I think I know a lot about firearms, and then tune into mishaco, and find out i only know a fraction of the info that’s out there.
Not sure if you’ll see this post or not. I took delivery of a nib Colt AR-15A4 last week. It has the exact same old school markings as yours with a slightly lower serial number. Very pleased with it and want to add some M16A4 clone bling to it, starting with the sling and mag pouch. Is your sling 1.25 or 1.5 inches wide? Any mfg brand markings on the sling or pouch? I'd be curious how the likes of a Ruger SR-556 compared to the Colt in terms of function, durability and reliability etc, but if you'd rather save that for a premium, I'll understand ;)
I believe the F mark was left off cause they no longer make fixed carry handle guns. The height is supposed to be the same.
I'm curious...which is better, the partial heavy barrel profile or the full heavy barrel profile? Same question on the 16" barrel...uniform barrel profile or SOCOM with the M203 cut?
Also, you talk about Colt and FN being a cut above. Where do you put BCM, DD, SIG, LMT, LaRue, and LWRC? These are all in the $1200 - $2000 range, which should mean they're as good as if not better than Colt and FN.
I've had 3 psa ar15s but I bought complete lowers and have switched 3 different uppers 2 16 inch and now a 11.5. And all the uppers have ate thousands of rounds of brass and steel tula and monarch and I've never had a single malfunction but seeing Jay's problems with him building them I'd say that's all buffertube issues
Questions:
Are these actually made by Colt, or an assortment of parts merely assembled by them?
Are these military grade, or cheaper replicas?
I'm interested in picking up one for the extra velocity from a 20-inch barrel.
But, I'm used to LWRC quality in performance and durability.
What would I be getting here?
In my experience my PSAs will run the Tula whereas my Bushmaster will not. They will both feed wolf steel case ok but I normally put a steady diet of wolf gold brass case through them though. I wish I would have picked up an A4 and SP1 just on looks alone though. Thanks Misha for my gun porn fix for the day. Great video as always!

I just bought one of these and discovered colt is now laser engraving rather than using roll dies on the lowers. I think it looks cheap, and do not like that it says “carbine” on the full size rifle. Bug anyone else? Mishaco what are your thoughts on colt making their lowers all read the same?

A rifle length spring should have a resting length of between 11.75" to 13.5". Just FYI for Jay.

Misha you mentioned the A2 went from a 1/12 in the A1 to 1/7, wasn’t it a 1/9 twist in the A2 though? What up Foxy. I just affectionately call my cat, “stupid cat” that’s it’s name.
The US Military has never used the 1/9 twist rate. However, several European militaries have/do.

I don't think there is any dif
Upper receiver or lower receiver? The upper receiver should be about the same, unless you are including barrel and gas system. The M4 lower receiver will have a carbine length receiver extension and heavier H2 buffer. Other than that, the markings may be different, and the furniture is obviously different, but the only functional internal differences will be the FCG. The M4 and the M16A4 will have a burst limiter. The M4A1 will not.
I bet the PSA build lacked a polished chamber. PSA is really bad about having unpolished Chambers.
My PSA has a polished chamber and runs great.
To be fair.. that’s not necessarily a cheap buffer and spring problem I have a X 95 that will not run that steel cased wolf either. Not exactly sure why.. does exactly what Jays does. My Glocks,Ak’s have 0 issues but the Tavor don’t like it at all
It was definitely a buffer issue. We've found bullpups can be temperamental with steel case. I kept brass to feed my AUG, though after 500 rounds or so it'll cycle all steel on the adverse gas setting.
The non f marked front sights are still the taller front sight..colt no longer manufacturers the non f marked size anymore due to the fact they no longer make any non detachable carry handle models...My ar15a4 has the f marked front sight.(made in 2016)A friend of mines was more recent and his didn’t have the f mark on the front sights but it WAS the same exact sight...I love mine .I haven’t had a single malfunction...
I wondered that because my a4 colt with cage code and the square forge marking dosnt have a F marked front sight, mine has the military markings on barrel and such ,been told it's a m16 a4 upper and once told it was colt commercial ar15 a4 upper
Colt doesnt f mark any of their fsb's anymore. I just got a socom barrel dated 2020 with no f mark. My research has showed me that they just dont do it anymore.
@@bartholomewgreatpants3425 I know i have been trying to tell that to people for awhile.I don’t own any colts since 2016.No reason really it just happens to be the last one I bought.I just wanted to bring it up that the non marked front sight bases on colts nowadays are the taller sight.even if it isn’t marked.They quit producing the shorter fixed carry handle type fsb years back.They only make it for special runs..Now a days if you buy a new colt with a detachable carry handle or rail it will have the correct taller sight.It won’t be marked but it will be the correct sight.

Colts are good to go in my experience. Their rifles are better than their handguns
Yeah, buy it but then actually develop extraordinary marksmanship with it by participating in US Service Rifle Competition. It’s a lot of fun. And who knows maybe one day you will wear the US Distinguished Rifleman Badge.

@@misha5670 not true there was a certain amount of le carbine lowers made and colt used them for the a4 and added a4 behind the ar15 part and put the a4 upper on it. Those are actually pretty rare and are worth more for collection purposes.

What I think would be cool for Misha is noise-making targets. AliExpress, Wish, and other markets for Chinese electronics have musical greeting card guts or Bluetooth speakers for sale cheap enough. One way of looking at it is if it takes 10 rounds to hit, you've spent as much on ammo as the target. The more I think about it, the more I'm tempted to try shooting by sound just for fun.
