I may be 4 years late but i love the look of that scotch brite pad in the resin. Now im trying to figure out how to incorporate it into one of my resin projects
Very cool idea and looks great. I was amazed when I learned how easy it is to make micarta. You can't go wrong with a material that is very strong, looks expensive when done right, and you can make it yourself while spending little money.
You, sir, are a master craftsman and wonderful teacher. Cheers. Thank you for this valuable insight and instruction. You have been inspiring my micarta projects for a while. I now teach and share with others.
Beautiful. I think I like it better stacked on wood rather than I would as a whole scale. The contrast of old/ modern and natural synthetic, really compliments eachother and makes them both stand out. I might try this with blue and green. It may make nice pendants and other items too.
That turned out pretty sweet looking. Been thinking about making my own Micarta for some time now. I kinda like the idea of creating my own unique scales for my blades.
Just found this vid. Glad to see how "gangsta" ur shop is. Mines a cluster***k, but i know where everything is. I see so many creators with thousand dollar hammers, bridgeport mills and lathes, huge forge/furnaces all in pristine condition and in perfect spots. Its nice seeing how far one can get with good old fashion elbow grease, alittle creativity and some will. Good job. Ps. Love the safety flip flops 😉
I really enjoyed this video! A LOT of good information! Ty. I have been reluctant to make my own micarta due to shop size and MESS involved, but this has REALLY tempted me to give it a shot. Thanks again for the information!
He is so precise and structures his explanations with eloquent and simple phrasing. He has a style that reminds me of my favorite TED talks. I learned how to make micarta from this channel and ones like it. Stay tuned, and go make some cool stuff. It's never 'perfect', and doesn't need to be. Every day you create and explore you get better at both. Cheers, #Maker. Go make! :)
If you learn from things you try that don't work then your ahead of the game from head to hands sometimes something got lost I'm going to try something like that thanks for information..
I got like 3 huge sheets of scotch brite from a buffer. Wonder if I can use one for a quick and effective sword handle? Like sandwich wrap it around the tang with a overlap seam.
been searching the internet for micarta made from shiny wrapping paper or even better that wrapping paper that has hologram patterns on it... do you know of any such project and if not would you be willing to try that out???
Shinny paper unfortunately will usually not absorb the resin or stick together will. I do not think it would work as micarta. You could always cast it in clear resin
It's beautiful but I hate working with Micarta or anything resin-based because the dust is ridiculous. I did kirinite handle scales on my last knife and I'm still cleaning up dust.
I followed your lead and made a batch of green scotch brite micarta. Did you take it clear down to like 1200 grit or something? I just cannot get mine to POP like yours. Thank you, i watch your videos all the time
Would fiberglass resin be strong enough alone or do you need to add materials like cloth, paper, burlap and such? Is it possible to just make solid colors by just adding the modelers paint to the resin?
I noticed that when you were grinding your handle that you were not wearing so kind of resperator or at the very least a dust mask. Dust from micarta is very toxic . So do your self a favor and were protection ...
Any good places to buy the resin online, he said his were from home Depot but none of the hardware places in my little town have any and even the home Depot in the nearest city somehow doesn't know what fiberglass or epoxy resin even is.
When you made the blue paper micarta, you said you used construction paper? What kind of paper is that? I'm not in the U.S. and I would like to know what to ask for to do something like this. Thanks, and great video :)

i have been playing with resin for a long time this is new to me i can hardly wait to use the process you have demonstrated
Glad to see you found your shirt halfway through.
First thing in my mind... :D
I am always gratified to see people comment the same crap I think up. I was gonna say "start out with fiberglass resin and no shirt".
Very cool idea and looks great. I was amazed when I learned how easy it is to make micarta. You can't go wrong with a material that is very strong, looks expensive when done right, and you can make it yourself while spending little money.
This was a great idea for micarta and it looks incredible. It looks like colored, stabalized wood but better.
You, sir, are a master craftsman and wonderful teacher. Cheers. Thank you for this valuable insight and instruction. You have been inspiring my micarta projects for a while. I now teach and share with others.
Thank you so much for the positive feedback. really appreciate it.
The Scotch Brite looks awesome!
I’ll trying this to make beads. Thanks
Great video. I will definitely be incorporating this idea. Thanks!
Awesome! Thank you!
Really cool. Reminds me of an electric blue. It would make an interesting inlay material for instruments.
Very cool love to see people just try something new it works or not never know till you try
Thank you. I should really show some of the failures LOL.

Thank you very much!
Truly cool look to the handle!!! I think mixing it with the wood and brass really set the micarta off!!! Take care and God bless
That turned out really good, and with less hassle than some other methods.
Good idea, Thanks for passing it on I will be giving it a shot soon
This video just opened me up to alot of ideas. Thank you
Ditto. :)
Good job! A bright yellow "Scotch Brite" pad plus a red modeling paint might make something that looks like flames!
Im going to have to search for yellow scotch bright pads!!
what he did in that video is brilliant
You sir are a freaking genius
That turned out pretty sweet looking. Been thinking about making my own Micarta for some time now. I kinda like the idea of creating my own unique scales for my blades.
EXCELLENT!!!
LOVE ALL YOUR VIDEOS!
Thank you very much!
Absolutely brilliant. Seriously.
Great idea! I will have to try that out!
Very cool!!
Way to think outside the box.

Very good craftsmanship. A beautiful knife. Stay awesome.
That looks great! I would have never thought to use a Scotch-brite pad.
I’m making pink handles like this for a friend
This was amazing!! Thank you for the video, I'm off to the shop. Beautiful blade by the way
I think it's a fantastic idea! Looks great!
I have been watching how to make Micarta for 3 days and was so upset. Then I ran across you and wah lah I have hope :) LOLOL Thank you :)
You can do it!
You might want to use a dusk mask grinding the micarta. Just looking out for you. Great video and the variations are limitless!
Very pretty for something so simple. Nice work.
that looks great!!!
Excellent successful experiment! Thank you for sharing! Well presented tutorial also! Cheers.
thats fucking genious mate - I will try this tomorrow with my worn out scotchbrite i have lying around everywhere
makes me so happy to see you working shirtless in flip flops, now i know im not alone in this practice
awesome vid lov that pattern will try it myself thanks
Great job thanks
You bet
That is brilliant. I have some green pads here that I may try it with.
Loved it ,great colour.
turned out very nice. wondering what finish you put on micarta handles
Just sanded and buffed
Lots of good information.
wow! beautiful knife. keep up the good work
I bet Copper wool miacarda would look awesome.
Tried it. Did not work at all. When you polished the micarta little strands of the wool stuck out. very disapointing
@@DIYeasycrafts what if you polished the micarta and then painted resin over it?
Great job. Thanks for the video.
Very good idea I love the looks of that!
Wow, that's awesome, great looking knife Sir well done.
🇺🇸 now I gotta try this 🇺🇸
nice idea! cheers from Brazil
some finely shredded gold leaf mixed in would make for a nice faux-lapis look.
If you learn from things you try that don't work then your ahead of the game from head to hands sometimes something got lost I'm going to try something like that thanks for information..
i am impressed.
Awesome informational educational experience Y'alls
Great video, really interesting

Real nice ... informitave vid.
Awesome job, great to see you thinking outside the box. new sub
Super awesome!!
love it, how do you limit air bubbles in material ? thanks for sharing
That's a beaut!
Try Magic Eraser and natural sea sponge next!
Buenísima idea,me suscribo
thank you very useful
Very cool idea bud. Now what happens if you mixed a red scotch pad, silver enamel paint, and gold flakes??
May have looked tackey if it was all micarta. I don't know but it looks nice.
what kind of bikes are those? cool idea on the scotchbrite .
Not bad ,good work
huh, that's really cool man.
Frist...without Sound, i thought you where going to wax the man bod. Excellent results 🙂
great job.
Very cool!
Could you use a piece of wood for a backing while making this scotch brite micarta? (while you are pressing it and making it).
been searching the internet for micarta made from shiny wrapping paper or even better that wrapping paper that has hologram patterns on it... do you know of any such project and if not would you be willing to try that out???

Super awesome video! I'm inspired to try this myself.
(Although I thought my phone was ringing at 4:55 Lol!)

I followed your lead and made a batch of green scotch brite micarta. Did you take it clear down to like 1200 grit or something? I just cannot get mine to POP like yours. Thank you, i watch your videos all the time
No only sanded to 400 or 600 (can not remember) then buffed
Did you use a buffing compound, and if so what do you recommend
Would fiberglass resin be strong enough alone or do you need to add materials like cloth, paper, burlap and such? Is it possible to just make solid colors by just adding the modelers paint to the resin?
The resin really gets its strength from the fibers. Yes you can use a few drops of paint to color the resin
This is so awesome! Thanks for all the info, I really appreciate it. What kind of resin are do you use?
I just used regular fiberglass resin. Got it from Home Depot
Nice!
I doubt the blue dye in the skotch brite or in the construction paper will last, for sure its going to fade in to a pale color.
Hi, could you tell me which resin you used? thank you
I noticed that when you were grinding your handle that you were not wearing so kind of resperator or at the very least a dust mask. Dust from micarta is very toxic . So do your self a favor and were protection ...
looks awesome man, great video. love how your accent sounds like Peter from Family Guy lol
What epoxy do you use to attach to the knife ?
try baking parchment paper instead of waxpaper. It's easier to handle.
No shirt required! Lol, I'm not hatin', I don't wear a shirt from June through September myself.
Wax paper? or Parchment paper?
I used parchment
clean shop
LOL Clean and organized is something no one has ever accused me of. I spend most of my time just looking for tools!
Bondo resin ? Brand you used looks like ?
Maybe combine colors - shred each in a blender then combine as desired.
Great idea!! Not so sure wife would want me breaking her blender but I could easily cut up and mix. Thanks
dakotamax2 You could pick up a cheap yet good quality blender at a Goodwill. Thats where I got mine
Wow ,ill even say it backwards woW
Aren't ALL paving stones just laying around? Just messing with ya, bub. Love the video, I'll have to try it out on my next handle.
Any good places to buy the resin online, he said his were from home Depot but none of the hardware places in my little town have any and even the home Depot in the nearest city somehow doesn't know what fiberglass or epoxy resin even is.
I bought mine at Wal Mart. It is usually available at the auto parts stores as well.
The brand most of them carry is Bondo.
When you made the blue paper micarta, you said you used construction paper? What kind of paper is that? I'm not in the U.S. and I would like to know what to ask for to do something like this. Thanks, and great video :)
Its just colored paper from arts and craft store. Kids use it for crafts. Any paper will work as long as its not coated
Like scrap book paper
